- While working as a DJ on the American radio station KOR Seattle in 1964, using the name Rick West, he had to stand in at the last minute for a DJ called Tommy Vance who had failed to arrive, and was billed under this name on the programme. He decided to carry on using this stage name for the rest of his life.
