Ricky Gervais, who just tweeted the picture you see to the right of him and Oscar host Billy Crystal, has been confirmed as host of the 2012 Golden Globe Awards marking the third straight year the comedian will steal the show from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. After last year's appearance drew a bit of controversy, Gervais said he would turn down the opportunity to host for a third time, but obviously that's not the case as the HFPA announced the news we were all honestly just waiting for confirmation on after reports last week that Gervais, Douglas Vaughn, senior vp specials at NBC, and HFPA president Aida Takla-o'Reilly sat down to chat and rumors that an official offer was made at that time. In a curious twist, the HFPA wasn't above noting how their entire organization was not altogether happy about the decision saying: "While many welcome Gervais's return, not...

It was announced this morning by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association that Morgan Freeman will receive the Cecil B. DeMille award at the 2012 Golden Globe Awards. The award is give to "talented individuals who have made an incredible impact on the world of entertainment" and Freeman follows the ten most recent recipients Robert De Niro, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Warren Beatty, Anthony Hopkins, Robin Williams, Michael Douglas, Gene Hackman, Harrison Ford and Al Pacino. Freeman's most recent films include 2010's geriatric actioner Red, narrating the Warner Bros. documentary Born to be Wild and starring in the successful family film Dolphin Tale. He will next be seen reprising his role as Lucius Fox in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises. In other Golden Globe-related news, there are rumblings that Ricky Gervais will be returning to host the show even though shortly after last year's excellent hosting job he said he...

Ricky Gervais is in talks to return as host to the Golden Globes ceremony in 2012, as per The Hollywood Reporter. Citing "a source close" to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), THR says that HFPA president Aida Takla-o'Reilly and Douglas Vaughn, senior vp specials at NBC, had dinner with Ricky Gervais in Paris "to discuss a potential deal." With Gervais ridiculing Hugh Hefner and his (at the time) much younger wife-to-be, former drug addict Robert Downey Jr, rumored gay Scientologists (in clear reference to Tom Cruise and John Travolta), in addition to nominees The Tourist, Johnny Depp, and Angelina Jolie (and the HFPA for shortlisting them), the 2011 Golden Globes ceremony averaged 17 million viewers on NBC, up 5 percent from the previous year. The network, which has been in doldrums of late, surely needs any kind of ratings boost it can get. If that means bringing back Ricky Gervais… A while back,...

According to The Hollywood Reporter, a source close to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has told the site that Ricky Gervais may be the host of the Golden Globes even after the controversy he sparked when he hosted it in January. Maybe I’m just jaded, but who didn’t see this happening? How could NBC or the HFPA not have Gervais back even if he made half of Hollywood angry? The source told the site that the senior vp specials at NBC, Douglas Vaughn, and HFPA president Aida Takla-o’Reilly had dinner with Gervais in Paris in order to discuss a potential deal. The source wouldn’t confirm if an offer had been...

I know that, in this age of the Internet and the 24/7 news cycle, it’s sometimes hard to remember things that happened even a few days ago. But try to think back all the way to last year’s Golden Globes Awards. They were hosted by comedian Ricky Gervais, and a lot of people thought that he was too mean in the digs that he took at the celebrities in attendance. Then, after the ceremony, the Internet stirred up a bit of a controversy when quote from HFPA President Philip Berk got out that succinctly said, “He definitely crossed the line.” Before you knew it, false Internet drama led to a war of words between Gervais and Berk, or at least a public negotiation. Gervais claimed that, despite Berk’s comments, he had already been invited back for next year but, “I don’t think I should. I don’t know what I could do better. I...
