“Sherlock” producers Hartswood Films have posted revenues of £51.7 million (61.6 million) for the last financial year.
Net profit for the year came to £7.8 million (9.5 million), a result the company’s directors said they were “very satisfied with,” although the financial report notes that gross profit margin dropped from 29 to 19 compared to the previous year.
The decrease in gross profit margin was put down to “a change in mix of income from the previous year, with proportionately less income arising from redistributions, and more income arising from development and production activity.”
The accounts, which cover the year ending March 31, 2022, were filed with the registrar at Companies House in December 2022.
As required by Companies House, the financial report also addresses the current risks in the market, with Hartswood defining them as “the increased pressure to find available studios and talent; pressure from commissioners and audience expectation driving budgets ever higher without increased available finance,...

The Royal Television Society Program Awards 2022 started with a slap on Wednesday evening, when nominee Aj Odudu ran up to the stage and pretended to strike host Tom Allen.
“Oh my God, Aj, oh my God – I’m the one who’s lost their hair, don’t hit me,” Allen, who is bald, quipped in the evidently pre-rehearsed skit. “I never put my wife anywhere near your mouth.”
Continuing the reference to the altercation between Will Smith and Chris Rock, which took place at the Oscars on Sunday night, Allen continued: “I’ve got to look my best for tomorrow, I’ve got an audition for ‘G.I. Jane 2.'”
Watching from the audience at the Jw Marriott Grosvenor House in Mayfair, where the awards were taking place, were a bevy of well-known faces including “The Batman” star Andy Serkis, “Supergirl’s” David Harewood and “Succession” actor Matthew Macfadyen. The Production Team of the Year Award was won by the crew behind Northman, Robert Eggers follow-up to The Lighthouse, including producer Mark Huffam.
According to jury chair Callum McDougal, the decision was made in part because the film was the first major feature to shoot in Northern Ireland during Covid, which sent “a sign across the world that we could continue to work safely in this country and deliver film successfully.”

Beryl Vertue, the prolific British producer behind BBC’s “Sherlock” and “Men Behaving Badly,” passed away peacefully Saturday night at her home, according to reports in the British press. She was 90.
“It’s with the heaviest of hearts that we have to share the sad news that mum/Beryl passed away peacefully last night,” her daughters and Hartswood Films co-producers Sue and Debbie said in a statement to Reuters. “It wasn’t Covid, it was just her nearly 91-year-old body saying enough is enough.”
They continued: “We were there so the passing was as good as one could hope for. Nothing wrong with her brain – even earlier this week she was grilling us both about work. It’s really impossible to believe that she has gone though, because I know we’re not alone in thinking that somehow she’d go on forever. She meant so much to so many.

"The Lego Movie" took home the Award for Outstanding Producer of Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures for producer Dan Lin while "Life Itself" won the Award for Outstanding Producer of Documentary Theatrical Motion Pictures for producers Garrett Basch, Steve James, and Zak Piper.
Meanwhile, Alejandro G. Iñárritu, John Lesher, and James W. Skotchdopole took the Oscar glitter away from Richard Linklater's "Boyhood" when "Birdman" was awarded the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures.
The Oscars just got interesting! Will "Boyhood" triumph over "Birdman" at the Academy Awards?

Movies made by women directors were snubbed by the Producers Guild of America when they announced the nominees today! Both "Selma" by Ava DuVernay and "Unbroken" by Angelina Jolie were left in the dust. I agree with not nominating the latter movie (sorry Ms. Jolie but "Unbroken" is too earnest for my taste) but "Selma" deserved a nod! It's a profound movie aided by DuVernay's skilled directing and David Oyelowo's fine performance as Martin Luther King Jr.
You know who I'm blaming for this? Paramount! The studio did not send screeners to Academy voters. Heck, they did not sent one to us, the Broadcast Film Critics Association. But after begging, they did send a link so I could watch "Selma" in time for our Critics' Choice Movie Award nominations.
"Selma" is a "late to the party" entry that is gaining momentum dashed by the PGA! If you remember, Clint Eastwood...

Richard Linklater‘s personal indie “Boyhood” and David Fincher’s dark blockbuster “Gone Girl” are among the nominees for the Producers Guild of America’s top film award, the PGA announced on Monday morning.
Other nominees for the PGA honor, which tends to be a reliable indicator of Oscar potential, are Clint Eastwood‘s “American Sniper,” the adventurous comic story “Birdman,” British biopics “The Imitation Game” and “The Theory of Everything,” Wes Anderson‘s stylish “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” the driving indie “Whiplash,” Bennett Miller’s subtle “Foxcatcher” and Dan Gilroy’s dark and creepy “Nightcrawler.”

The Producers Guild of America (PGA) added to the industry mix Monday morning with a list of 10 nominees to keep the awards season grist mill churning. "Gone Girl" popped up again, and it shouldn't be a surprise. It's one of the year's biggest hits. And speaking of hits, I had a hunch "Nightcrawler" would find a place after becoming such a well-liked, profitable success. There it sits. The question for both of these films is whether this on-going industry/guild love ends up translating to Oscar recognition. After the "Dragon Tattoo" rush a few years ago, I'm pretty much wait-and-see on stuff like this. Absent from the list was anything out of the Marvel Studios comic book factory, notable as both "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" were both on the top tier of box office earners in 2014. The former currently maintains the throne, though it...

The Producers Guild of America announced Monday its list of film and television nominees for its 2014 awards, and the list is as notable for its omissions as it is for its selections.
Among the films in the running for the top prize -- known formally as the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures -- are "American Sniper," "Birdman," "Boyhood," "Foxcatcher," "Gone Girl," "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "The Imitation Game," "Nightcrawler," "The Theory of Everything," and "Whiplash."
But it's the films that were left off the list that had awards season prognosticators in a tizzy Monday. "Selma," "Unbroken," and "Into the Woods" all failed to score nominations, leading some to wonder if those movies' Oscar chances have dimmed significantly.
On the television front, "American Horror Story: Freak Show," "Fargo," "The Normal Heart," "The Roosevelts: An Intimate History," and "Sherlock" all scored nominations in the long-form television category.

Mark Gatiss is a busy man but polite to a fault. He agreed to squeeze in a chat with us after a lengthy round of Us phone interviews on the eve of broadcast for his seventh Doctor Who episode, Robot Of Sherwood ("It'll just be nice to talk to someone who doesn't say Rah-ban Hud!"). Half an hour before the scheduled time, he calls to say that he's finished with the Americans but would I mind waiting twenty minutes while he has his tea? The writer and producer behind Men Behaving Badly are working on a new sitcom.
Simon Nye and Beryl Vertue are currently creating a comedy set in a hotel.
Radio Times reports that writer Nye has finished a script for Private Parts, and is hoping to get a commission from the BBC.
Nye has reportedly also made casting approaches.
He told the website: "Serious actors are desperate to do comedy, so we've got some good people lined up."
Meanwhile, he also did not rule out a return for the classic 1990s sitcom, starring Martin Clunes and Neil Morrissey.
"There's always the issue of how you'd cast it, but I'd never say no," he added.

Oh yes it still hurts that Ben Affleck was not given a Best Director Oscar nomination, yet his fantastic film "Argo" continues its ascension to Oscar glory! The film took home the top prize at the Producers Guild of America Awards taking home the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures.
So guess which film will win the Oscar Best Picture? Yup, it will be "Argo!" Why? Well, Hollywood really loves movies about them and "Argo" is about a movie of a fake movie in order to help free some Americans trapped in Iran during the hostage crisis.
And, the PGA award is a significant Academy Awards precursor. Only seven times in 24 years has the PGA winner failed to win a Best Picture Oscar. So "Argo" has a strong chance.
I'm also happy that "Searching for Sugar Man" won the Documentary category, and not so happy...

The Producers Guild of America has announced its nominations for best productions of the year, in what is often looked to as an indicator for how the Academy Awards may go.
The guild selected 10 films — most of them common guesses for the group that could make up the Oscar list of the best films of 2012: Argo, Lincoln, Les Misérables, among others.
The one surprise: Skyfall. No 007 film has ever cracked the Best Picture list, but if this nomination is any indication, that could change when the Oscar nods are revealed Jan. 10.

Sherlock producer Beryl Vertue has claimed that broadcasters place too much weight on ratings. Vertue, the mother-in-law of co-creator Steven Moffat, believes that the "excessive focus" on the performance of TV channels means some shows are axed too early. She told The Guardian: "The ones with the bigger numbers are the winners. The public see one that wins over another and they say, 'I won't watch that then'. "Audience appreciation is very valid when there's so many channels, it's not a competition. We should be cheering and talking up the good news and not talking about winners and losers." The media executive added: "British (more)...

"Sherlock" executive producer Beryl Vertue tells the BBC's Virtue Magazine that the third season of the Benedict Cumberbatch/Martin Freeman update of the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle tales won't even go into production until 2013.
Doing a little basic math that means even British fans probably wouldn't see new episodes until at least summer 2013 and the wait would be even longer in the U.S. There is precedent for the audience's patience, though.
The first season aired in the U.K. in July 2010 and didn't return until January 2012 -- a full 18 months later. Yet fans came back with a vengeance and American-based "Sherlock" aficionados are already eagerly awaiting the kickoff of Season 2 here on Sunday,...

Anyone desperate to find out what happens after the dramatic events in the last episode of Sherlock's second series will have quite a long wait.
Executive producer Beryl Vertue has revealed that the third run of the hit show will start filming in the early part of 2013. This suggests it will air later that year or not until 2014.
The updated version of the sleuth's adventures was co-created by Vertue's son-in-law Steven Moffat and is produced by his wife Sue Vertue for Hartswood Films and BBC Wales.
Ariel - the BBC's in-house magazine - reports Beryl Vertue stating "early 2013" as the date when production on the next series will get under way.
Beryl Vertue added it was too early to announce broadcast dates for the next set of episodes, even though showrunner Steven Moffat had at one point suggested it could air later in 2012.

Sherlock exec Beryl Vertue has confirmed shooting dates for the next series. The detective drama will resume filming in "early 2013", the producer told the BBC's in-house magazine Ariel. However, Vertue added that it is too early to confirm a transmission date for the new episodes. A third series of Sherlock - which stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman - was announced in January. Series co-creator Steven Moffat announced that fans would not have "that long" to wait for the new run, though executive producer Sue Vertue later confirmed (more)...

They made TV history together and were planning their next film – until Tony Hancock rejected their script. Ray Galton and Alan Simpson reveal why The Day Off is now back on
The best review we ever had wasn't from a critic. It was from an artist, Lucian Freud. He said that The Rebel was the greatest film ever made about modern art. The 1961 movie was the first, and sadly the only, film we made with Tony Hancock. It's the story of an office clerk, played by Hancock, who believes himself to be a great but undiscovered artist. When he's fired from his job he moves to Paris, in the hope that the art world will recognise him for the genius he is. Of course, being Hancock, he's a terrible painter, but his ability to act like a genius persuades a group of fashionable young artists that he might be the real deal.

The Day Off, by writing team Ray Galton and Alan Simpson, was unearthed during research for a new biography of the duo
They wrote some of the funniest, most memorable British comedy of the 20th century. Ray Galton and Alan Simpson's scripts for Tony Hancock had lines so brilliant, characters so absurd and jokes so sublime that they embedded themselves in the national consciousness.
Fans should prepare themselves for a treat, though, because the best may be yet to come. The Observer can reveal that Galton and Simpson completed a feature-length film script for Hancock that has never been made public. The Day Off, the gut-wrenching tale of a hapless bus conductor who just can't get anything right, has been hailed as a lost masterpiece and "the holy grail of comedy".
