A group of Portuguese filmmakers took to the streets on Tuesday to protest new local film and TV legislation being voted on in parliament, which they claim will give foreign streaming giants an unfair advantage within the country’s film landscape.
Portugal is among the first countries in Europe to implement the European Union’s recently approved Audiovisual Media Services Directive (Avms), which obligates foreign streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video to invest a portion of their revenue into local productions. Now that Brussels has approved the Avms, parliaments across Europe must transpose it into law by 2021.

On May 14, Acid Trip #2, an initiative of the Association for Independent Film Distribution, is dedicated to Portuguese cinema. It will screen three films selected by the Portuguese Directors’ Association (Apr) – Pedro Cabeleira’s “Damned Summer”, Teresa Villaverde’s “Colo” and Leonor Teles’ “Terra Franca.”
The Apr’s note accompanying the selection stated that Portugal’s cinema is “persistent and resilient, and despite production difficulties, it invents its own conditions to continue to exist and create.”

Following the first lineup announcement for the 71st Cannes Film Festival, yesterday Critics’ Week arrived, and now today we get two more sidebar reveals. First up, there’s Directors’ Fortnight, which opens with Birds of Passage, from Embrace of the Serpent director Ciro Guerra & Cristina Gallego. Also among the lineup is Gaspar Noé’s drug-fueled (of course) drama Climax, Mamoru Hosoda’s new animation Mirai, Romain Gavras’ Le monde est à toi, as well as Sundance favorites: Panos Cosmatos’ Mandy and Debra Granik’s Leave No Trace.

France’s Association for the Diffusion of Independent Cinema (Acid) has unveiled the line-up for its 26th Cannes Film Festival showcase, running May 9-18.
The initiative is aimed at giving greater visibility to up and coming, independnet filmmakers and will screen nine works. All our world premieres except Jim Cummings’ Thunder Road which is an international premiere.

Paris-based auteur-focused Mpm Film and shorts specialist Premium Films have joined forces to create a single sales entity called Mpm Premium, combining their industry know-how and network.

Mpm Film founding chief Marie-Pierre Macia and producer Claire Gadéa and Premium Films founder Jean-Charles Mille will oversee management of the company.

Teresa Villaverde's Trance (2006) is showing from February 22 - March 24, 2017 in most countries around the world.I’d call the beginning of Trance (Teresa Villaverde, 2006) poetic, but in a way that has little to do with the overpowering, declamatory voice of an individual character, and even less to do with the transposition of such a voice into images. Rather, the poetic quality of this opening is to be found in the associative chains of ideas built up over the unpredictable progression of shots, in the rhythms and echoes performed by a polyphony of voices, and in the sudden slippages, enjambments, and halts of the sound/image relations. Full disclosure: this reviewer was not the biggest fan of Miguel Gomes’ Arabian Nights trilogy. Hailed as masterpiece(s) by most, the 6.5-hour docu-fable could just as easily alienate viewers through its abstruse cinematic language and an overall undersupply of charm. While films certainly don’t have to be plot-driven, it’s much harder to remain engaging or even approachable when you communicate in coldly abstract terms.
Along came Colo, another Portuguese arthouse offering with a capital A set against the backdrop of the country’s economic recession. It’s not only the longest film in competition at this year’s Berlinale but also its most obstinately enigmatic. As with Arabian Nights, traditional storytelling is stripped to a bare minimum here. The way writer/director Teresa Villaverde plays with suggestion and symbolism, however, proves immensely seductive, leaving one teased, provoked, blissfully mystified.
To be sure, the quiet, deliberately-paced drama...

Of the two new entrants on today’s Screen Jury Grid at the Berlin Film Festival, Teresa Villaverde’s Portugal-France co-production Colo [pictured] was the star, scoring a respectable 2.7 from a possible four-stars.
The film particularly impressed Germany’s Katja Nicodemus, who awarded it a full four-stars, while Verena Lueken, also of Germany, opted to award it a solitary star.
Volker Schlondorff’s Return To Montauk, however, was unable impress the jury of international critics, clocking a rating of just 1.7, the second-lowest of this year’s scores after Oren Moverman’s The Dinner (1.3).
Aki Kaurismaki’s The Other Side Of Hope remains top on a rating of 3.7 and will take some beating as the competition enters its final stretch.
Debuting at the festival tomorrow are Hong Sang-soo’s One The Beach At Night Alone and Marcelo Gomes’ Joaquim.

It takes a rare kind of genius to make a relentlessly boring film about teenage pregnancy, attempted suicide, knife-point abduction and family collapse. This year’s Berlin Film Festival competition is heating up.
Following a relatively uneventful start, Aki Kaurismaki’s The Other Side Of Hope sent a shockwave through Screen’s 2017 Berlin Jury Grid by scoring a whopping 3.7 from a possible four, with one score yet to be registered.
Russia’s Anton Dolin, the UK’s Tim Robey, Germany’s Verena Lueken, and France’s Sebastien Jedor all awarded the film a full four-stars, meaning it has shot to the top of this year’s grid and looks a good bet to retain its position come the end of the festival.

Moverman’s (The Messenger) mystery-drama The Dinner stars Richard Gere, Laura Linney, Steve Coogan, Rebecca Hall and Chloë Sevigny. Based on the novel by Herman Koch, the film looks at at how far parents will go to protect their children.

A re-energised Pula Film Festival, the biggest film festival in Croatia, will welcome top guests including Roger Michell, Fridrik Thor Fridriksson, Gyorgi Palfi, Tudor Giurgiu and Mike Cahill.

The omnibus feature which marks the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War comprises 13 short films of eight minutes each, directed by Aida Begic, Leonardo di Costanzo, Jean-Luc Godard, Kamen Kalev, Isild Le Besco, Sergei Loznitsa, Vincenzo Marra, Ursula Meier, Vladimir Perisic, Cristi Puiu, Marc Recha, Angela Schanelec, and Teresa Villaverde.

The Official Selection for the 66th Cannes Film Festival has been unveiled in Paris.
At a press conference at the Ugc Normandie movie theatre on the Champs-Elysées in Paris, Cannes chief Thierry Frémaux is set to reveal the 49 features from 28 countries selected for inclusion in this year’s festival, which runs from May 14-25.
As previously announced, Olivier Dahan’s Grace of Monaco, starring Nicole Kidman, will be the opening film on May 14, out of competition.
Last week, Party Girl was named as the opening film of the Un Certain Regard strand. The debut feature is from co-directors Marie Amachoukeli, Claire Burger and Samuel Theis.
As previously announced, the competition jury will be presided over by New Zealand director, producer and scriptwriter Jane Campion.

The official juries for the 65th Festival del film Locarno have been appointed. The jury for the International Competition will include the American screenwriter, producer and director Roger Avary (Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction, 1994; The Laws of Attraction, 2002), Seoul filmmaker Sang-soo Im (A Good Lawyer’s Wife, 2003; The Housemaid, 2010), French director, screenwriter and actress Noémie Lvovsky (La vie ne me fait pas peur, Silver Leopard “Youth Cinema” at Locarno in 1999; Camille redouble, 2012; Benoît Jacquot’s Farewell, My Queen, 2012) and London-based Swiss curator and writer Hans Ulrich Obrist, co-director of the Serpentine Gallery in London since 2006.

Just a few days after Tiff had announced its first 50 films from this year’s festival slate, the Venice Film Festival has announced their own lineup, and I must say, it’s one hell of a collective.
Criterion Collection nuts will have a field day here, as various directors from the collection will be bringing their new films to Italy this year.
First up, in competition, David Cronenberg will be taking his new film, A Dangerous Method, to Venice this year, making it one of the bigger fall festival season players this year. Steve McQueen’s Shame will play this year, as will Andrea Arnold’s (Fish Tank) Wuthering Heights. Roman Polanski will debut his latest film, Carnage, at Venice this year, as will Todd Solondz, who brings Dark Horse this year.
Out of competition, Chantal Akerman and Whit Stillman will debut their next projects, La Folie Almayer and Damsels In Distress respectively.

The line-up for the 2011 Venice Film Festival was unveiled a little earlier today and this year’s edition looks particularly stacked on the English-language side of things with a large number of dramatic outputs from the U.K. and U.S.
Dozens and dozens of high-intrigue fare are set to be premiering over the two week event which kicks off proceedings on August 31st with the George Clooney directed political thriller The Ides of March as an in-competition film. A trailer was released last night and you can see it Here.

Any perspicacious film festival-goer or festival-watcher will have noticed that one of the prizes awarded at most festivals, in addition to the Golden Palms, Golden Lions or Golden Leopards etc, is the Fipresci (Federation International de la Presse Cinematographic) – aka the international film critics' award. In principle, this should be the most prestigious and sought-after prize of all, because the juries are made up of professional film critics (usually five, each from a different country) who are paid to tell the public what is good or bad and why.
Unfortunately, the Fipresci prize does not carry with it any money but, in theory, it does help the film gain a distributor. However, on one occasion, I remember that a director, who had just won the Fipresci prize,...
