Actor Joe Mantegna has previously recorded a commentary for the 1996 Stephen King adaptation Thinner with the film’s director Tom Holland (whose other credits include Fright Night and Child’s Play)… but that didn’t stop him from sitting down to record a new commentary for Scream Factory’s upcoming Blu-ray release of Thinner! This time, Mantegna was joined by producer Mitchell Galin – and we’ll get to hear what they had to say about Thinner when the Blu-ray is released on January 23rd. Copies are available for pre-order through the Scream Factory website and on Amazon.
Scripted by Tom Holland and Michael McDowell, Thinner is based on a novel King wrote under his Richard Bachman pen name and tells a story of supernatural terror as one man faces a countdown to the ultimate excruciating payback. A 109-year-old Romani man, hell-bent on revenge for the death of his daughter, exacts a...

Two days ago, I mentioned to the loved ones I was spending Christmas with that I knew exactly where I was 25 years earlier. On the evening of December 25, 1998, I was sitting in a movie theatre, taking in an opening day screening of director Robert Rodriguez‘s alien invasion horror film The Faculty (watch it Here). Now, two days after the film’s 25th anniversary, scooper Daniel Richtman has revealed on his Patreon page that Rodriguez is producing a remake of The Faculty!
That’s all of the information that’s available at this time. The Faculty is getting a remake and Robert Rodriguez is on board as producer.
Rodriguez directed the original The Faculty from a screenplay by Scream writer Kevin Williamson (working from a story by David Wechter and Bruce Kimmel). The film has the following synopsis: To the students at Harrington High, the principal and her posse of...

The film: Morbidly obese and deeply unpleasant lawyer Billy Halleck (Robert John Burke) runs over an old gypsy woman with his car, distracted by his wife Heidi (Lucinda Jenney) who is doing something rather rude to him. His ties to the local law enforcement, Judge Cary Rossington (John Horton) and Chief of Police Duncan Hopley (Daniel von Bargen), means the case is dismissed before it gets to court. However, the old woman’s father (Michael Constantine) has a different kind of justice in mind. He curses Halleck with the word ‘thinner’ and soon, Halleck begins to lose weight at a dangerous and ever-increasing rate.

In a couple of weeks, TV (The Book) will be in stores (though you can pre-order it now), featuring my and Matt Zoller Seitz's top 100 list of American TV shows and essays extolling their greatness. Most of the book was assembled with a Talmudic level of thoroughness. But scattered throughout are some shorter, sillier lists, which we assembled more on instinct and/or what made us laugh in the moment, on subjects like TV's best spies, best mustaches, and most important articles of clothing. Two of those lists involve TV's best and worst bosses, and a friend who has an advance copy asked me yesterday to go even more granular and rank the various Seinfeld bosses (considering only people who stuck around a while, as opposed to poor Mr. Tomasulo, who gave George a handicap-accessible bathroom). I didn't overthink it, but just went with my gut, and this is what resulted.

Roddy Piper Irwin Keyes Christopher Lee Mary Ellen Trainor Betsy Palmer Geoffrey Lewis Richard A. Dysart Tom Towles Daniel von Bargen and Wes Craven are just a few of the amazing talents to pass this year. They were all special contributors to our precious genre and theyre all going to be dearly missed.

Start with the title: Clown Car! may sound like the movie someone will inevitably make about the 2016 presidential campaign, but how about evoking those great Seventies wacky-journey films like Death Race 2000, Vanishing Point or Smokey and the Bandit?
When I raised the question on Twitter, suggestions included All the President's Wanna-Bes, Every Which Way But Left, Cannonball Rug, A Kochwork Orange and the subtly appropriate Hair.
All excellent ideas, and we may have to put the movie name to a separate vote. Right now, though, the more pressing question is...

Why isn’t there more horror noir? With the exception of a few movies — 1987’s Angel Heart and the 1991 made-for-hbo film, Cast a Deadly Spell, among them — not many filmmakers have crossbred the horror genre with hardboiled film noir. And yet it seems like such a natural fit: film noir’s propensity for shadowy photography, its fascination with the dark side of human nature and a willingness to be unremittingly bleak all lends itself to horror, which so often embraces similar conventions. And, yet, the horror noir remains a rare animal.
In 1993, author and filmmaker Clive Barker created his own horror/noir hybrid with Lord of Illusions, adapted from his own short story, “The Last Illusion” (from Books of Blood Volume 6). It follows Los Angeles private detective Harry D’Amour (Scott Bakula) as he looks into the murder of a shop owner with ties to the occult. D'Amour’s investigation...

In late October, the director’s cut of Nightbreed was finally unleashed upon hungry fans. We’ve been waiting for that release for what seems like decades, and its pre-order phase was met with the appropriate internet buzz, both good and bad. Now Scream Factory are dropping another Clive Barker film upon us, and it too comes with a Director’s Cut, as well as the Theatrical Cut. Some may argue that this is the superior film of the two releases. Some, but not myself. Don’t get me wrong, I love Lord of Illusions, and especially the director’s cut, but for me, Nightbreed is the perfect monster movie. Lord of Illusions is more of a dark pulp detective movie than a horror movie, but it’s dark enough, and violent enough for it to fit nicely in that genre as well. This is a case where Barker had...

For the third week of December, Clive Barker fans have much to celebrate as Scream Factory is releasing Lord of Illusions in high def for the first time ever. Spotlight Titles:
Don’t Look in the Basement – Digitally Restored (Film Chest, DVD)
Don’t Look in the Basement, also known as The Forgotten, is one of the best low-budget movies in the horror/thriller genre. With a budget of roughly $100,000, the film is presented in great B-movie style with generally good acting and directing.

Welcome to The Last Horror Blog, a biweekly column on all things horror. We tend to joke a lot about cults, but when you get right down it they’re actually pretty terrifying. Brainwashings, torture, delusion, mass suicide, violent acts… all are behaviors that have been linked to various cult organizations over the years. Horror filmmakers have long understood the dark side of men like Charles Manson and Jim Jones – and have used those harrowing tales to craft their own terrifying masterpieces. One of those classics makes its debut on Blu-ray this month. Clive Barker’s 1995 film Lord of Illusions casts a deadly spell involving real magic and the cult dedicated to its brutal leader, Nix (Daniel Von Bargen). Part dark fantasy, part neo-noir, and as...

This is finally happening, and I can’t wait. It has been a really long time since I have seen Lord of Illusions. Fresh off of the Director’s Cut of Nightbreed, I could definitely use some more remastered Clive Barker films in my life. Scream Factory have announced the extras that will be included in their Collector’s Edition of the film. We get a Clive Barker commentary, a behind-the-scenes featurette, some rare on-set footage, deleted scenes with Clive Barker commentary, and likely more. I’ve noticed that they usually undersell the bonus content on their discs, mostly due to space limitations, I would assume. This is shaping up to be a fantastic release, with a new transfer, and what looks to be a generous amount of extras. The release hits shelves on the 16th of December. You can pre-order a copy for yourself either on amazon, or the Shout!

It’s been over a decade since Malcolm in the Middle first started airing, and for a lot of programmes, that kind of length of time is enough to make it seem more than a little dated. Malcolm in the Middle is not one of those shows. Its characters, storylines, and dialogue are just as hilarious as I remember, and I have the added benefit now of getting the jokes put in for the adults. The show has become somewhat iconic, with They Might Be Giants’ opening credits song readily singable by a generation, and for good reason.
Frankie Muniz stars as the young Malcolm, who is discovered in the pilot episode to be something of a genius, with an Iq of 165 at the age of 12. He’s moved from his regular class into the school’s gifted class, becoming a ‘Krelboyne’ in the process, and consequently labelled a nerd.

In truly tragic and infuriating news, actor Daniel von Bargen (Lord of Illusions, Super Troopers, The Silence of the Lambs, The X-Files, Thinner, "Seinfeld") fumbled a suicide attempt and has been hospitalized.
According to the 911 phone call posted by TMZ (who else?) the character actor made from his Cincinnati home, von Bargen sustained a self-inflicted gun shot wound to the head. The 61-year-old appears discombobulated on the phone: "I was supposed to go to the hospital and I didn't want to… they were supposed to amputate at least a few toes," he said, adding that he is diabetic.
Though we wish von Bargen well and hope that he'll have a speedy recovery, we find it hard to elicit much sympathy for the man after trying to take his own life.

Literally a day after going on a Twitter rant about the local news being worse than anything you'll ever see on the big screen, ABC shamelessly shares a horrifying story about an ex-movie star who attempted to take his own life. In a world where news outlets brag about scoring exclusive interviews with the parents of rape victims, they also have audio of a 9-1-1 call where Lord of Illusions and Thinner star Daniel von Bargen survives a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. We will not link the audio. If you're a sick f*ck, go Google it. According to the call, Von Bargen shot himself to avoid going to the hospital. He is a diabetic and was supposed to have two of his toes amputated that day. According to Montgomery Police Srgt. Greg Vondenbenken, Von Bargen was seriously injured. They took him to Bethesda North hospital...

This is sad news in and of itself, of course. But what’s making it even sadder is the six-minute-plus 911 call TMZ obtained. We would really, really like to unhear it now.
To spare you from the same, we’ll just recap it right here and then you can avoid it at all costs: Von Bargen says he shot himself in the temple with a 38, five to 10 minutes before calling. The operator asks a number of questions and apparently wants to keep him talking until the EMTs get there. Von Bargen says he won’t be able to get to the door and he can’t open his eyes.
