Toronto — Nick Cassavetes takes an unsettling trip into a troubled woman's mind in Yellow, an often funny character study full of scenes that left-turn into wild expressionism. A far cry from his mainstream-friendly films like The Notebook, the picture makes up for potentially alienating moments by stockpiling sensationalist ingredients like sex, drugs and family members who morph into farm animals at the dinner table. Heather Wahlquist stars as Mary Holmes, a substitute schoolteacher addicted to pain meds. (Wahlquist and Cassavetes, who were once a couple but no longer are, co-wrote the film.) When she's not

Nick Cassavetes has yet to hit on a filmmaking style to rival his father's legacy, but with "Yellow," the director of "The Notebook" presents an unhinged portrait of emotional turmoil with bold stabs at expressionistic representation at every turn. It's not only Cassavetes' best movie, but also a fascinating alternative to conventional melodrama that burrows inside its troubled protagonist's head and unleashes her emotions in vivid terms. No matter how messy it gets, "Yellow" renders a troubled subjectivity with striking creativity. Cassevetes' wife Heather Wahlquist delivers a phenomenally unhinged performance as substitute teacher Mary Holmes, a pill-popping manic-depressive living out a vapid life in Hollywood while haunted by her many past mistakes. A more credible version of the headcase played by Cameron Diaz in last year's "Bad Teacher," Mary has suffered from a long trail of mistakes that stretch...

Did My Sister's Keeper and The Notebook just take on sinister undertones? No, but Yellow, the latest film from Nick Cassavetes (the burly director of the aforementioned tearjerkers), features a sister and brother who previously had an intimate relationship and have found themselves struggling at the game of life. And Cassavetes obviously had something to think about when it came time to shoot the scene in which the sister (played by his ex-wife, Heather Wahlquist) visits her brother (Brendan Sexton III) in prison. "I have no experience with incest," Cassavetes, whose parents are Gena Rowlands and late filmmaker John Cassavetes, told The Wrap at the Toronto Film Festival. "We started...

Director Nick Cassavetes ("The Notebook," "Alpha Dog") debuted his controversial new movie this weekend, but his comments in an interview with TheWrap may well out-shine the project itself.
"Yellow" bowed at the Toronto International Film Festival. The movie revolves around Mary, the main character played by Cassavetes' ex-wife Heather Wahlquist. Mary visits her brother in prison, and the two are, as The Wrap's Sharon Waxman notes, engaged in a "love affair."
Here are Cassavetes' thoughts on the plotline:
“I have no experience with incest. We started thinking about that. We had heard a few stories where brothers and sisters were completely, absolutely in love with one another. You know what? This whole movie is about judgment, and lack of it, and doing what you want.
Who gives a shit if people judge you? I’m not saying this is an absolute but in a way, if you’re not having kids – who gives a damn?...

Medient Entertainment have released an official teaser trailer for drug ensemble drama Yellow.
Scripted by Heather Wahlquist and Nick Cassavetes (who also directs), Yellow stars Wahlquist, Sienna Miller, Ray Liotta, Lucy Punch, Max Thieriot, Riley Keough, Melanie Griffith, Daveigh Chase and Gena Rowlands.
Yellow centers on Mary Holmes (Wahlquist), a substitute teacher and mother of four, who hallucinates her way through the drudge of everyday life by fantasising about other people and lives.
The film, which marks a noticeable improvement for Cassavetes’ since the super-weepy My Sister’s Keeper, will premiere at the 37th annual Toronto International Film Festival, where it’ll be shopped to buyers by International Creative Management (ICM).

After starting production in the fall of 2010, Nick Cassavetes’ ensemble film “Yellow” now has a teaser online in advance of its Tiff premiere. The film, written by Cassavetes and lead Heather Wahlquist, follows “a youth substitute teacher (Wahlquist), who hallucinates her way through the drudge and grind of everyday life by fantasizing about parallel realities” and has a Vicodin addiction. Cassavetes has amassed quite the ensemble for the drug drama, something he has done previously in films like “The Notebook” and “Alpha Dog,” which include previous collaborators, like his mother Gena Rowlands, Ray Liotta and Ethan Suplee as well as Sienna Miller, Melanie Griffith, Lucy Punch, Riley Keough, Max Thierot and David Morse. From the looks of the trailer, it seems like this could be Cassavetes’ most ambitious and experimental film to date, miles away from safer fare like his last directorial outing, the weepy...

One of the films I’ve been most curious about in the Toronto International Film Festival line-up is Nick Cassavetes‘ indie drama Yellow. After showing off some stills, the first trailer has arrived today, which includes tons of crazy imagery from freefallin’ women to flooded classrooms to chain-smoking clowns. His last feature, My Sister’s Keeper, was about as mild and predictable as they come, so I look forward to him changing things up here.
Toplined by Sienna Miller and described as a “wildly inventive and visually dazzling head-trip,” the drama follows “a young substitute teacher who escapes from her drudging everyday life by fantasizing bizarre parallel realities.” Check out the trailer below for the film toplined by Sienna Miller and also starring Gena Rowlands, Ray Liotta, David Morse, Lucy Punch, Max Theoriot, Riley Keough, Daveigh Chase, Heather Wahlquist and Melanie Griffith.

I don't know what to make of this newly released teaser trailer for Nick Cassavetes' Yellow which presents Heather Wahlquist as Mary Holmes, a young woman who has a difficult time feeling things, and swallowing twenty Vicodin a day doesn't help. The film is said to explore her hallucinatory world and you get a lot of that from the trailer along with glimpses of Sienna Miller and Ray Liotta who are only part of a massive cast that also includes Gena Rowlands, David Morse, Lucy Punch, Max Thieriot, Riley Keough, Daveigh Chase and Melanie Griffith. The film is playing Toronto looking for distribution and it's one I was planning on catching, most likely next Thursday evening and the ambiguous nature of this trailer has me intrigued. Staring production way back in the fall of 2010, it has been a long time coming for Nick Cassavetes' drug drama "Yellow," but it's now headed to Tiff and a strong handful of images have arrived, though curiously, aside from Sienna Miller, not much is seen of the extended ensemble. The recent European Film Market in Berlin has unveiled the first official photos and synopsis from Nick Cassavetes' latest directorial effort, the ensemble drama "Yellow." Written by Cassavetes and partner Heather Wahlquist, the film reportedly jumps eras as it follows the story of a woman who deals with drug addiction and multiple family secrets that she can no longer bury. It's the film's extensive cast that has our interest piqued: supporting Wahlquist who also stars in the film will be the solid roster of Sienna Miller, Lucy Punch, Ben Foster, Melanie Griffith, David Morse, Luke Wilson, Hank Azaria, Riley Keough…...

Fresh from the Efm, we have a couple of stills and a lengthy, wacky first synopsis for Yellow - it sounds so promising that I kind of regret where I placed the project in our Most Anticipated list -- as Nick Cassavetes appears to have confected something that truly goes against the grain of his previous film items. Pictured below in the bathing cap we find Cassavetes' wife -- actress and screenwriter (this is her first writing cred) Heather Wahlquist, and below that we have Sienna Miller who takes on the starring role of Xanne. Ben Foster who was kick ass in Cassavetes' Alpha Dog also toplines. Though we haven't read the screenplay, we do know that this will be jumping around different eras. Read the synopsis after the jump. Mary (Heather Wahlquist) has problems. She has a difficult time feeling things, and swallowing twenty Vicodin a day doesn’t help.

#61. Yellow Director: Nick CassavetesWriter(s): Cassavetes and Heather WahlquistProducers: Jordan Gertner, Chris Hanley, David Hillary, Timothy Wayne PeternelDistributor: Rights Available. The Gist: This is about a young woman whose drug habit isn’t the worst of her problems.....(more) Cast: Ben Foster, Lucy Punch, Sienna Miller, Luke Wilson, Hank Azaria, David Morse, Daveigh Chase, Elizabeth Daily, Melanie Griffith, Gena Rowlands, Max Thieriot, Riley Keough, Heather Wahlquist List Worthy Reasons...: An indie addiction drama from the director who gave us My Sister's Keeper, The Notebook and John Q? Yup - the Cassavetes name can now be re-associated with independent film. Alpha Dog (the first time where I really took notice of Ben Foster) was Nick Cassavetes' more significant film of his filmography, and my thinking is with a rather large ensemble pitching in and a reunion with Foster for this to generate plenty of buzz. Release Date/Status?...

It seems more actors and actresses have been lured by Cassavetes as David Morse (The Hurt Locker), Luke Wilson (Vacancy), Hank Azaria (Year One) and Riley Keough (The Runaways) have all signed on to star in the ensemble drama about a young woman with a drug habit and a myriad other problems.

Nick Cassavetes' next film, Yellow, has just added four more names to an already-interesting cast list, with the news (from Coming Soon) that David Morse, Luke Wilson, Hank Azaria and Riley Keough have signed up.They join Sienna Miller, Lucy Punch, Ben Foster, Melanie Griffith, Heather Wahlquist and Gena Rowlands (because a Cassavetes film of any generation without Gena Rowlands in is like strawberries without cream) in the story of a young woman with drug - and other - problems.Azaria's role will apparently be no more than a cameo, but even without him that's a heck of an interesting line-up. Nick Cassavetes previously directed The Notebook, Alpha Dog and My Sister's Keeper, but we're guessing this will be closer to Alpha Dog than either of the weepies.

Mentioned very briefly only two weeks back, we have some major casting news that was announced late yesterday. Nick Cassavetes' will be counting on some familiar faces, casting his mother (Gena Rowlands) and Ben Foster and will most likely throw this trio (Sienna Miller, Lucy Punch, Melanie Griffith) under the bus in Yellow - which has been described as a tale about a "young woman whose drug habit isn’t the worst of her problems." Her he is below with Heather Wahlquist who co-wrote the screenplay with her hubby Nick. I'm not sure about you guys, but after having seen Foster's chest pounding villian in Alpha Dog, I'm almost sure that it developed in him being cast in some strong film roles including his first starring role in Oren Moverman's The Messenger.

The Cassavetes name is synonymous with taking one for the team, and then taking on a project for one's own self. Over the past decade and a half, Nick Cassavetes has been taking plenty for the team with admirable directing gigs such as The Notebook, Alpha Dog and numerous acting jobs but nothing has come close to a personal vision since the quirky, 1997 addiction drama She's So Lovely, which arguably remains his best work to date. Yellow, a project noted back in January, appears to be Cassavetes' renewal with the indie form. Filming begins in L.A. next month, and sweet Oklahoma in mid-October. Joe Q. Bretz is producing. Co-written by Cassavetes's actress wife Heather Wahlquist (she has starred in all of his films since John Q) and Cassavetes himself, this is about "a young woman whose drug habit isn’t the worst of her problems." Expect a more detailed...
