The NFL goes to “Infinity and Beyond” when the October 1 football match-up between the Atlanta Falcons and Jacksonville Jaguars instantly transforms into a real-time animated simulcast set in the “Toy Story” world. Thanks to a first-time collaboration between ESPN, Disney/Pixar, and the NFL — and AI and animated tech — “Toy Story Funday Football” (streaming on Disney+ and ESPN+ at 9:30 a.m. Et) transports the game live from London’s Wembley Stadium to Andy’s room.

Jackie Gleason never won an Emmy. Neither did Ed Sullivan. Or Andy Griffith. Or Fred Rogers. Or “Star Trek” creator Gene Roddenberry. Or “Rocky & Bullwinkle” genius Jay Ward. Bob Newhart’s sole Emmy win was as a guest actor on “The Big Bang Theory” in 2013.
Yes, the 74 years of Emmy history are chock full of surprises spanning both winners and non-winners. That extends to the Emmy’s Governors Award as well. The TV academy describes that Governors Award – bestowed generally but not always annually since 1978 – as follows: “The Board of Governors of the Television Academy may, when warranted, recognize an individual, company or organization that has made a profound, transformational and long-lasting contribution to the arts and/or science of television by presenting them with the Governors Award.”

It’s great to see the Brenaissance happen. Oscar nominee Brendan Fraser has been a joy to watch in movies since 1992’s Encino Man. Although the Oscars tend to overlook comedy, Fraser has done strong dramatic work long before The Whale. However, it’s great to see his performance in The Whale recognized.

Brendan Fraser's ongoing Brenaissance (sorry) continues as the once-reclusive star re-emerges into the spotlight. Much of Hollywood's newly rediscovered love for Fraser stems from his Oscar-nominated turn in Darren Aronofsky's "The Whale," but he's also got the benefit of '90s nostalgia and just being a charming guy working in his favor. That effortless charm was put to good use back in the '90s when Fraser was handed starring role after starring role. From his breakthrough in 1992's "Encino Man," which established his ongoing penchant for playing "naif characters," to 1997's "George of The Jungle," and his biggest hit "The Mummy," Fraser had a gentle and endearing demeanor that proved popular with audiences of all ages. Sometimes.
Other times, it didn't work that way. "George of The Jungle" proved a hit for Disney in '97, bringing in 105 million at the box office on a 55 million budget. Two...

The new animated anthology miniseries "Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi" is now streaming on Disney+, and brings us a new perspective on Count Dooku: a view of him in his earlier years before the corruption of the Sith took him and twisted him into Darth Tyranus.
The man behind Count Dooku's voice, Corey Burton, has been a voice actor for decades, providing voices you hear almost every day. From the tram operator at Disneyland and "Star Wars" characters like Count Dooku and Cad Bane, all the way to Captain Hook, Spike Witwicky and Shockwave from "Transformers," and even James Bond, Jr., Burton has shaped the audio landscape of Saturday morning cartoons and theme parks for decades. We were able to have a wide-ranging conversation with him about the beginnings of his career, his work as Count Dooku, and the legacy of "Star Wars."

Nine years after it disappeared from cable TV channel lineups, Speedvision is preparing to rev up its engines again.
The cable channel — which catered to automotive enthusiasts and racing fans from its launch in 1995 until Fox shut it down in 2013 — is being revived as a free ad-supported streaming network (the acronym being, appropriately, a Fast platform), with some high-profile backing.
Among the backers of the new Speedvision are Robert Scanlon, a co-founder of the original cable channel who most recently oversaw the Velocity and Motor Trend businesses for Discovery Inc.; Joe Abbruzzese, who was previously the president of advertising sales for Discovery; wrestling superstar Bill Goldberg; and automotive and racing magnate Rick Hendrick.
Scanlon will serve as the company’s president, while Abbruzzese will advise on ad sales and sponsorships. Goldberg is expected to appear as talent in some of the network’s programming.

Sally Kellerman, who was Oscar nominated for her supporting role as Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan in Robert Altman’s “Mash” feature film, died Thursday in Woodland Hills, Calif. She was 84.
Her publicist Alan Eichler confirmed her death, and her daughter Claire added that she had been suffering from dementia for the past five years.
Among her other roles were a cameo in Altman’s “The Player,” a professor in Rodney Dangerfield’s “Back to School” and a Starfleet officer in the “Star Trek” episode “Where No Man Has Gone Before.”
The willowy blonde actress with the characteristically throaty voice appeared in two Altman films in 1970; the other was the more experimental “Brewster McCloud,” in which she starred with Bud Cort and Michael Murphy. In this film, which did not have a conventional narrative, Kellerman played Louise, the mother of Cort’s bewinged character, Brewster.

Allan Burns, a television producer and screenwriter best known for cocreating and cowriting for the television sitcoms The Munsters, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and Rhoda, died Saturday at home. He was 85 and no details were immediately available on the cause of death.
Dan Pasternack, a producer and programming executive and longtime friend of the family, said Burns was a mentor to many. “As much of a legend as he was, and as diverse of a career as he enjoyed, the most remarkable thing about Allan Burns was how kind he was to so many people.”
Burns was born May 18, 1935 in Baltimore, Maryland. He attended the University of Oregon from 1953 to 1957 before heading to Los Angeles and breaking into show business.

The big upcoming holiday is often referred as “the most magical time” of the year. Well, then it would be a perfect time for a family-oriented film centering on magic. No, we’re not talking about flying reindeer or that “jolly old elf” from the north. Why not explore more ancient mythology full of shapeshifters, mystical spell casters, and animal familiars. Oh, and this tale is animated, also. So, we’ve been on a trip Over The Moon and it’s a couple of weeks before our exploration of “the Great Beyond” in Pixar’s Soul. What better excuse to take a journey back into a past full of myths, legends, and enchanters. Keep your sword and bow at the ready, because this is the era of the Wolfwalkers.
And the era is in the latter part of the 17th century, in the dark forests of Ireland. We encounter a...

A beloved statue of animated legends Rocky and Bullwinkle will soon be unveiled on the Sunset Strip after being gone since 2013.
The Weho Times reported the statute’s return today, capturing its image in a brief moment during installation before it was covered. An official unveiling is planned for the end of March, but no date has been set.
The spinning statue depicts Bullwinkle holding his friend Rocky. It stands on the corner where Sunset Boulevard splits into Holloway Drive. The statue was removed in 2013 for restoration work.
Today, a giant crane placed the 14-foot, 700-pound statue on its pedestal. The statue dates to 1961, but the original creator is not known. The statue was restored by Ric Scozzari with funding by Twentieth Century Fox and Dreamworks, and donated by the Jay Ward family for the City of West Hollywood’s Urban Art Collection. Memorabilia from the private collection of late voice actress June Foray will be up for auction beginning at 1 p.m. at Heritage Auctions.
Foray is best known as the voice of Rocky the Flying Squirrel in the various “Rocky and Bullwinkle” series, Cindy Lou Who in “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” and Granny in the “Sylvester & Tweety” cartoons. But she voiced hundreds of other roles beyond those, working late into her life. She died on July 26, 2017, just a few weeks shy of her 100th birthday.
In addition to her prolific voice acting career, Foray was also a key figure in the animation industry as a whole.
“June was not only the preeminent voice actress for decades during her astounding 80-plus-year career, she was also a founding member of Asifa-Hollywood and the creative force behind the Annie Awards,” says Asifa-Hollywood executive director Frank Gladstone. “A fearless and influential advocate for animation,...

“The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle” executive producer Scott Fellows knew a voice was missing when the casting team replayed the audition tapes for the show’s titular flying squirrel. “Where’s Tara Strong?” he asked.
Strong had submitted voice auditions twice for the character of Rocky — once for the initial call, which proved unsuccessful, and another when her agent told her Rocky would be recast. Until Fellows inquired, casting agents had pushed her auditions aside. But upon hearing her tape, they immediately changed their minds.
“This is no fault of any studio, but a lot of times they say, ‘Oh that actor’s on everything, so let’s try new blood,'” Strong tells Variety. “Which truthfully is silly because voice actors who work all the time do so because they’re versatile, and sometimes you have no idea it’s that person.”

On Friday I learned that one of my childhood heroes died. June Foray passed on at the age of 99.
Ms. Foray was a voice actress working in animated features all her long career, as well as in comedy shorts and appearances on Johnny Carson and with Stan Freberg, Daws Butler, and Frank Nelson. She was the voice of Grandmother in Mulan, of Betty Lou Who in How the Grinch Stole Christmas and, most important to me, she was the voice of Natasha Fatale and Rocky the Flying Squirrel on the various Rocky and Bullwinkle shows created by the legendary Jay Ward.
Rocky and Bullwinkle had a huge impact on me as a kid. All of Jay Ward’s stuff had a combination of sophisticated and low-brow humor. There were elements of satire combined with a lot of really bad puns.
Originally, the dimwitted Bullwinkle was the sidekick to the plucky hero Rocket J.

2017-07-27T06:39:47-07:00June Foray, Voice of Rocky the Squirrel, Dies at 99
June Foray, the famed “first lady of voice actors” whose repertoire of characters include Rocky the Flying Squirrel, Pottsylvanian spy Natasha Fatale, Tweety Bird’s owner Granny and a sinister talking doll, has died. She was 99.
Foray, who worked alongside such animated legends as Mel Blanc, Chuck Jones, Stan Freberg and Jay Ward during her unseen yet spectacular eight-decade career, died Wednesday according to close friend Dave Nimitz who posted a notice of her passing on Facebook.
Versatile in her intonations and cadence, Foray provided voices for an incredible range of characters, including the killer Talky Tina doll in the 1963 “Living Doll” installment of The Twilight Zone, an episode said to be inspired by Mattel’s enormously popular pull-string Chatty Cathy doll (she provided the voice for that, too).

This weekend was a busy pre-Easter frame, with three new titles of varying genres debuting in the Spring – and it made no difference. The hero of the U.S. continued to dominate despite the crowded field, and overall theaters saw close to a $20 million increase over last year.
Here’s how this weekend’s box office played out:
1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier – Gross $41.4 million (Cume $159 million; Week 2)
Marvel’s ongoing dominance is unsurprising, but the strong accolades for this entry might have still turned a few heads. The raves were large, and likewise the business. This will easily beat out the original, and should become a top-5 grosser all time for the studio.
2. Rio 2 — $39 mil ($39 mil)
This animated lark (damn, that’s clever!) benefitted from weak performances by other family films on the market. Blue Sky Studios, the animation company behind Ice Age, continues a second franchise with Rio 2.

I was a big fan of The Rocky & Bullwinkle Show as a child and while I enjoyed almost all of the segments “Peabody’s Improbable History” was a particular favorite. I don’t know what it is but time travel and know-it-alls have always appealed to me. It was because of this fandom and the horrific earlier attempts to make films out of the Jay Ward cartoons that made me approach Mr. Peabody & Sherman with particular trepidation. I’m happy to report that these fears were unfounded and that Mr. Peabody & Sherman is a generally delightful movie.
After perhaps a bit too much exposition (the original cartoon never seemed to need much more than talking dog, pet boy, time machine) Mr. Peabody & Sherman gets right into a trip to Revolutionary France that plays like a more action-packed version of an old-school Peabody short. It even closes with a pun. From...

Mr. Peabody & Sherman, a nostalgic reboot of a 1960s cartoon duo, follows Peabody and Sherman as they travel through time and then try to repair the space-time continuum.
The plot takes Peabody, a Nobel Prize winner and overwhelmed father, on a trip to fix what he broke during some leisure travel. In order to repair the damage, Peabody passes through history – hitting up Ancient Egypt, Florence during the Renaissance, the Trojan War and the French Revolution. Both Tutankhamen and Vincent Van Gogh make guest appearances.
Voicing Peabody is Modern Family’s Ty Burrell. Burrell’s costar in the series, Ariel Winter, voices Penny Peterson. Stephen Colbert, Alison Janney, Max Charles and Leslie Mann round out the top-billed voice actors.

Chicago – Talking dogs have been around for decades in animated movies and television shows, especially the anthropomorphized kind. From the superhero antics of Underdog to the biting sarcasm from the likes of Brian from “Family Guy” - take your pick and you can find a dog to your liking. I always took a shine to Mr. Peabody, the intelligent and resourceful beagle with a penchant for puns.

When I was a kid and Saturday morning was still appointment viewing for me with hours and hours of cartoons on all three networks, I would frequently get up before the sun was even up. I'd get myself a giant bowl of whatever sugary cereal was my poison of choice at the time and plant myself in front of the set so that I had control over whatever was going to be watched well before my sister woke up. There were many weeks where I was up and ready to go before the networks even began their programming, and by default, I would put on the only cartoons playing at that hour, a giant re-run block of "Rocky & Bullwinkle." At the time, I didn't fully appreciate the lunacy of the Jay Ward productions, and it was only as I got older that I began to understand the silly word play...

There’s one name that almost always gets a smile from nostalgic fans of TV cartoons: Jay Ward. After all, he helped to produce one of the earliest cartoon shows during television’s infancy, “Crusader Rabbit”. But it wasn’t until 1959 that Ward unleashed his masterpiece, “Rocky and His Friends”. Each half hours usually contained two short chapters of an ongoing adventure serial starring Rocky the Flying Squirrel and his dimwitted pal Bullwinkle the moose. And in between these installments were classic features often funnier than the show’s title stars. There was the satiric “Fractured Fairy Tales”, the campy “Dudley Do-Right of the Mounties”, the fables of “Aesop & Son”, and “Peabody’s Improbable History” in which the super-genius talking dog Mr. Peabody and his boy, the excitable seven year-old human named Sherman journeyed back through the years via Mr. P’s time travel invention the Wabac machine. After meeting some historical figure,...

As someone who grew up loving “Peabody’s Improbable History” on Jay Ward’s animated TV series Rocky and His Friends and The Bullwinkle Show, I approached this CGI feature with considerable trepidation. I’m delighted to say that my fears were unfounded: this movie is a treat for diehard Peabody fans and, I daresay, for newcomers as well. Ty Burrell delivers a pitch-perfect vocal performance as the world’s smartest dog, who has to prove himself worthy of being an adoptive father to a wide-eyed human son named Sherman (nicely played by Max Charles). In the old five-minute TV cartoons, there was no attempt to explore the nuances of the characters’ unusual relationship. This being a...

Rob Minkoff never intended for there to be a 20 year gap between his last animated feature, “The Lion King,” and “Mr. Peabody & Sherman.” Then again, he never expected it would take more than a decade to get his big screen adapation of Jay Ward's Saturday morning cartoons into theaters. The director spent years securing the support of Ward's daughter Tiffany and shuffling through a series of studio before setting “Mr. Peabody & Sherman” up at DreamWorks Animation, which is releasing it in U.S. theaters Friday. The prospect of expanding Ward's cartoon universe kept him committed during the long development.

Before our very early screening of "Mr. Peabody and Sherman," the new 3D adaptation of the Jay Ward characters that originated on "The Rocky & Bullwinkle Show," director Rob Minkoff addressed the audience (comprised mostly of children). He told us that we were one of the first audiences to see the movie, then told a rambling story about the time he met Billy Wilder in the airport. At some point he revealed that this was his first animated feature since directing "The Lion King" for Disney in the early nineties. It was about the only time in his intro that the kids in the audience actually reacted. And once the movie started, one thing became very clear: "Mr. Peabody and Sherman" is no "Lion King."The basics from the "Peabody's Improbable History" sections of the beloved sixties cartoon are here, with Mr. Peabody (here voiced by sitcom star Ty Burell, who replaced Robert Downey,...

This weekend's "Mr. Peabody and Sherman," a feature-length, 3D animated film from DreamWorks Animation, is already notable in the sense that it's the first film based on characters from the classic series "The Rocky & Bullwinkle Show" that doesn't look like it's going to be a huge financial disaster.
The spritely story of time traveling dog Mr. Peabody (this time voiced by Ty Burrell) and his "pet" human Sherman (Max Charles) is adapted from the "Peabody's Improbable History" segments of "The Rocky & Bullwinkle Show," and was directed by Rob Minkoff (it's his first animated feature since a movie we've never heard of called "The Lion King").
With "Frozen" finally exiting theaters and "The Lego Movie" losing some of its staying power, it looks like "Mr. Peabody and Sherman," a brightly colored, lively movie that will probably rake in some big box office. The premise is appealing and a number of parents...

First, the pleasant surprises. In puffing up the slight, absurd Mr. Peabody and Sherman shorts from Jay Ward’s The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show into an 82-minute 3D save-the-timestream child-distractor, director Rob Minkoff and his many writers have preserved a few of the hallmarks distinguishing the Dada, deadpan, almost primitive original, a toon so flat it was almost less than 2D. The structure remains episodic, visiting the French Revolution, Renaissance Italy, and ancient Egypt; genius beagle Mr. Peabody still caps each escapade in history with a proudly terrible pun; and the whole thing has an amiable, gag-to-gag vibe for most of the first hour. Many of those gags are godawful: Sherman, Mr. Peabody’s human boy companion, points out that "King Tut" rhymes w...

Simon talks to the director of Mr Peabody & Sherman about child actors, straight to video sequels, and animation vs live action
Since he co-directed The Lion King, Rob Minkoff hasn't made a full-on animated film since. He mixed animation with live action in a pair of Stuart Little movies (setting off a bit of a trend there), and went on to tackle The Haunted Mansion, The Forbidden Kingdom, and Flypaper amongst others.
Mr Peabody & Sherman brings him back to animation though, and he spared us some time to chat about. What's more, he talked too about the time he was offered the director's chair on Who Framed Roger Rabbit 2. Here's how our chat went...
If I've got this right, then this one's been on your plate for a decade, if not more than that. At one stage it was said to have a live action element to it.

The last time someone tried to bring Jay Ward's cult cartoon characters Rocky and Bullwinkle to the screen, the result was the less-than-successful 2000 flopbuster, which all involved – particularly Robert De Niro – would probably rather forget. DreamWorks Animation will be hoping for better luck with an animated short film aimed for release sometime next year.Featuring the original voice of Rocket “Rocky” J. Squirrel, June Foray, and SpongeBob’s Tom Kenny as moose pal Bullwinkle, the new short is most likely tied to the release of DreamWorks’ Mr. Peabody And Sherman, which utilises the moose and the squirrel’s cartoon stable mates (see the latest trailer below). No information has been released about the plot, but it'll probably see our heroes going up against villains such as Cold War troublemakers Boris and Natasha. We do, however, know that Beauty And The Beast’s Gary Trousdale will direct from a script...

When it comes to commercially viable properties that appeal to modern children, we can't help but think that "Mr. Peabody & Sherman," based on Jay Ward's characters from the "Peabody's Improbably History" segments of "The Rocky & Bullwinkle Show," might be a little dusty for today's young audiences. Then again, DreamWorks Animation, a studio that knows how to hip anything up, is reviving the time-traveling characters, and based on the just-released trailer, it looks like there might be some life left in this franchise after all. Plus, check out a Halloween-y set of brand new posters. In the trailer, we're introduced to Mr. Peabody (voiced by "Modern Family" star Ty Burrell), the genius inventor dog, and his adopted boy Sherman (Max Charles). When Penny Peterson (Ariel Winter) comes over to visit, Sherman tries to impress her by showing her the Wabac machine, a device that sends its passengers back in time.

Six new images have been released for Dreamworks upcoming animated film Mr. Peabody and Sherman. The film is based on the popular Jay Ward cartoons.
The cult classic cartoon Rocky and his Friends (1959-1964)—also known as the Bullwinkle Show—featured several popular animated segments, including Peabody’s Improbable History (1959-1963). For 91 episodes, we saw brilliant canine scientist/adventurer/explorer Peabody and his adopted ‘pet boy’ Sherman travelling through time in Peabody’s invention, the Wayback Machine, and encountering some of history’s most famous figures; helping them to accomplish their big discovery or invention. Now, Dreamworks is coming out with a big-screen adaptation of the classic cartoon, which is due out next year.

Mr. Peabody and his boy Sherman travel in style, even when they’re not journeying through time in six brand new photos from the upcoming Mr. Peabody & Sherman.
Based on Jay Ward’s classic cartoon, Mr. Peabody is the world’s smartest person who happens to be a dog. When his “pet” boy Sherman uses their time traveling Wabac machine without permission, events in history spiral out of control to disastrous and comical results. It’s up to this most unexpected of father-son teams to somehow put things back on track before the space-time continuum is irreparably destroyed.
The voice cast includes Ty Burrell, Max Charles, Ariel Winter, Stephen Colbert, Leslie Mann, Patrick Warburton, Stanley Tucci, Allison Janney, Lake Bell, Zach Callison, Dennis Haysbert and Mel Brooks.
Directed by Rob Minkoff (Stuart Little, The Lion King), DreamWorks Animation will release Mr. Peabody & Sherman in theaters March 7, 2014.
