Wedel has often been accused of plagiarism, because of strong similarities in his 'original' screenplays - including identical scenes and dialogues - to successful Hollywood features. In one case the author Stefan Esser, who once wrote a screenplay exposé for Wedel, accused him of stealing his work for
Mein alter Freund Fritz (2007). In another case the author Manfred Zach successfully sued Wedel in court, because he could demonstrate that parts of Wedel's screenplay for
Die Affäre Semmeling (2002) were taken from Zach's published book.
