"Rocky" is one of the most beloved sports movies of all time. One could probably even stretch beyond to say that it's plainly and simply one of the most beloved American movies ever made. Now, the movie is getting the "making of" treatment in a new film titled "I Play Rocky." The project has lined up a slightly unexpected director in the form of Peter Farrelly, known best for his work on screwball comedies such as "There's Something About Mary" and "Dumb & Dumber."
According to Variety, Farrelly is set to direct. What's more, casting is already underway for the lead role. Sylvester Stallone, who played Rocky Balboa in the original and its many sequels, is not specifically named as the inspiration for this lead role. However, it's crystal clear this movie is about the actor and his journey to get the cinematic classic made. The logline for the film...

The mesmerizing tale of Rocky Balboa has been a cornerstone of American cinema since the release of the first “Rocky” movie in 1976. Portrayed by Sylvester Stallone, Rocky’s journey from a struggling boxer in Philadelphia to an international icon is a story that’s both empowering and poignant. And in recent years, this story has seamlessly transformed into the tale of Adonis Creed, breathing new life into a franchise that spans nearly five decades.
The Rocky series was always more than just boxing. It vividly depicted love, friendship, rivalry, and redemption. The recent Creed movies, helmed by the character Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan), son of Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers), have gracefully transitioned the narrative from Rocky to Adonis, offering a fresh perspective and a respectful nod to the past. With the recent release of “Creed III” in 2023, the saga has reached a new milestone, marking the first time Stallone...

There is perhaps no greater sports underdog story in the history of cinema than "Rocky." Sports dramas had existed long before the 1976 classic, but Sylvester Stallone's beloved boxing flick has become the de facto blueprint for the genre ever since it was released. The film smartly and realistically portrays Rocky Balboa not as a reigning champion, but a down-on-his-luck amateur looking for his big break. It's fitting, then, that the character's primary inspiration, Chuck Wepner, was mostly known for his ability to take beatings instead of giving them.
Rocky Balboa has become so famous that it seems as if he was a real person, his statue proudly standing in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and drawing more visitors than the Liberty Bell. The boxer may have climbed the ranks in the sequels, but the original film's charm was the Italian Stallion's loss in the ring contributing to a victory in the soul.

Sylvester Stallone sure has had one hell of a run with his most famous onscreen creation, Rocky Balboa. He's had a long career full of ups and downs ("Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot"), but when people look back at Stallone's contribution to cinema in 50 or 100 years' time, it will be the big-hearted slugger from Philadelphia who Sly is best remembered for.
Perhaps because of his association with the action genre and easily-spoofed screen persona, people don't always give Stallone the credit as an artist he deserves. After all, you can say what you want about the overall quality of the "Rocky" franchise, but there can be little doubt that he created one of the greatest movie characters of the 20th century. Plenty of actors are intrinsically linked with their most famous roles; just take Harrison Ford, who pulled off the feat of embodying not just one but two iconic characters,...

It can take some people quite a long time to finish their passion projects. There are plenty out there that are just like Richard Dreyfuss' character in "Mr. Holland's Opus," with huge aspirations to create the next great symphony, comic book, novel, or painting, but life just gets in the way. Even James Cameron took over a decade to craft his sequels to "Avatar," which itself had been in development for fifteen years before it finally got released in 2009.
On the flip side (and definitely not saying that either category is better since everyone has their own process), there are other people who have no choice but to birth their artistic vision into this world immediately. For example, when Sylvester Stallone wrote the Academy Award-winning sports drama "Rocky" in 1975, he was just as much of an underdog as his titular boxer. While he had some success following the release of "The Lords of Flatbush,...

"I don't want you to be like me, I want you to be better than me." Vmi Worldwide + Verdi have revealed an official trailer for a documentary film titled My Father Muhammad Ali, a profile of the world famous boxer and his son. This is opening in theaters in January and will also be out on VOD for everyone to watch. This doc films tells the story of champion boxer Muhammad Ali through the eyes of his only biological son, named Muhammad Ali Jr, who appears in this to discuss his father's legacy and his own life. Muhammad Jr struggled with bullying, abandonment, addiction, family and heartbreak to ultimately find peace many years later. The film also includes appearances by Khalilah Camacho Ali, Rahman Ali, and Chuck Wepner, in addition to Ali Jr. This seems like a really sad story, but not unexpected unfortunately, as it's hard to be so...

Chuck Wepner, the ham and egger professional boxer who nearly beat heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali and thus inspired the Sylvester Stallone series of Rocky movies, was honored today with his own statute in his Bayonne, NJ hometown.
Wepner was a game but limited fighter in his career. Known as the “Bayonne Bleeder” for his penchant of absorbing numerous blows, Wepner was supposed to be a convenient stepping stone when he met Muhammad Ali on March 24, 1975.
The match was Ali’s first boxing match since he reclaimed the heavyweight championship from George Foreman in the famed “Rumble in the Jungle” match in Kinshasa, Zaire in Africa.
Held at the Richfield Coliseum in Ohio, the fight with Wepner was billed “Give The White Guy a Break.” No one gave Wepner much of a chance.
But Wepner more than held his own, knocking Ali down in the ring and hammering away at the champ.

Sylvester Stallone's early career is an underdog story to rival that of his most famous character, Rocky Balboa. The actor was virtually unknown with only a few small roles under his belt before he saw a journeyman slugger named Chuck Wepner go within 20 seconds of taking Muhammad Ali the full distance. Wepner's dogged fortitude against a much more skilled fighter gave Stallone the idea for a screenplay called "Rocky."
Not only did Stallone sell his script, but he also got to star in the movie as well. He almost went the distance at the Oscars, too. Stallone earned nominations for Best Screenplay and Best Actor, but lost out to Paddy Chayefsky and Peter Finch respectively for "Network."
From a modest budget of under 1 million, "Rocky" was a huge hit, grossing over 117 million worldwide at the box office (via Box Office Mojo). With that kind of roaring success, there was...

Some people would be surprised to learn that Sylvester Stallone is not only the star of the "Rocky" films, but also the writer. He even scored an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay in 1977, while "Rocky" itself received Best Picture. Stallone is actually a prolific scriptwriter, ever since selling his first feature-length script, "Hell's Kitchen," in 1975. He's written every single "Rocky" film, as well as the "Rambo" films. Stallone's screenwriting prowess shows that he's more multi-faceted than the dumb action star that many like to paint him as, and "Rocky" was his first, and perhaps biggest, success.
Stallone's script for "Rocky" was highly sought after, and because he was nearly broke at the time, Stallone fought to ensure that he would not only sell the script but star in the film, despite resistance from many studios. He managed to secure the leading role and the sale of the script, and the rest is history.

"Rocky" is one of the most popular sports movies ever. Focusing on a simple man from the wrong side of the tracks who achieves his seemingly impossible dreams, the movie had a winning formula from the beginning. After the film's successful release in 1976, Rocky Balboa became a symbol for underdogs everywhere, and Sylvester Stallone became one of Hollywood's most popular action stars.
After "Rocky," Stallone was widely accepted as a leading man, especially if the role called for bulging biceps and a ridiculous amount of bullets, and he played these roles for decades. It might seem like this guy came out of nowhere and took Hollywood by storm, but Stallone fought for his time in the spotlight.

In March 1975, a slugger named Chuck Wepner, aka "The Bayonne Bleeder," stepped into the ring to face the heavyweight champion of the world, Muhammad Ali. A title shot meant Wepner had the luxury of training full-time for the first time in his career, and he would earn $100,000 for the fight. Meanwhile, according to Time, the champ was guaranteed a $1.5 million payday from the event

Sylvester Stallone’s first draft of Rocky was dark — so dark his then-wife Sasha Czack hated the character.
The star, who turned 75 on Tuesday, said in a previous interview about his iconic boxing film that his first take on the character was all wrong.
Having been inspired by Chuck Wepner’s impressive fight against Muhammad Ali in 1975, Stallone said he went on a “writing frenzy,” which produced a 90-page script in three days. “And maybe 10 percent of it remained the final script. But it was done,” Stallone said then.

Sylvester Stallone shares an uncanny, symbiotic connection with Rocky, the underdog boxer character he created four decades ago — a kindred spirit who served as his creative muse in spawning one of Hollywood’s most successful film franchises. In his long career Stallone also played another memorable screen role — John Rambo — but Rocky was of his own making and still holds a unique place in the very fabric of his being. “It’s like my brother,” he says. “It’s the only voice that I can say what I want without being ridiculed, or being silly, or being precious or sentimental, because he is that way.”
In an hours-long interview with Variety, Stallone speaks candidly about how the “Rocky” movie series impacted his life and career — catapulting him to worldwide fame but, in his view, also dealing him a gut punch that clearly still stings.

"I'm Chuck." "I know who you are..." Vertical Entertainment has unveiled the first official trailer for The Brawler, a new boxing film from produce / director Ken Kushner. The Brawler is yet another telling of the true story of boxer Chuck Wepner, a man from Bayonne, New Jersey who becomes an underdog boxer and gets a shot to fight the champ. Chuck is the real life inspiration behind the Rocky movies, and his story was already profiled in another film titled simply Chuck, with Liev Schreiber playing Wepner in that one. The Brawler stars Zach McGowan as Chuck, with a cast including Amy Smart, Joe Pantoliano, Taryn Manning, and Burt Young. This doesn't look like it's going to be any good, unfortunately, seems the other Chuck film is the better choice between these two. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Ken Kushner's The Brawler, direct from YouTube: The true...

Exclusive: As his Showtime series Ray Donovan moves to New York for its sixth season, Liev Schreiber has joined up with Matthew Stillman to launch Illuminated Content, a Gotham-based venture to develop, produce and finance TV and movie projects. Former Maven Pictures producer Hardy Justice will head up development and production at the company’s offices in New York. The aim is to generate three to four projects per year across various platforms, with Illuminated Content producing and co-financing.
The company will allow Schreiber and Stillman to accelerate the entrepreneurial ambitions they have built on separate tracks. Operating around his Ray Donovan schedule — where he is producer and has directed several pivotal episodes — Schreiber has methodically been broadening his canvas. Schreiber made his feature directorial debut on an adaptation of the Jonathan Safran Foer bestseller Everything is Illuminated and most recently starred, co-wrote, and produced Chuck, the indie drama about the life of Chuck Wepner,...

To mark the release of The Bleeder on 21st August, we’ve been given 2 copies to give away on Blu-ray.
The Bleeder is the true-life story of Chuck Wepner, a liquor salesman from New Jersey, who went 15 rounds in the stunning 1975 heavyweight world championship against the greatest boxer of all time, Muhammad Ali, and ultimately inspired the billion-dollar Rocky franchise. In his ten years as a boxer, Wepner endured eight broken noses, 14 losses, two knockouts, and a total of 313 stitches. But his toughest fights were outside the ring: living an epic life of booze, drugs, wild women, exemplifying incredible highs and extraordinary lows.
Featuring a fantastic cast led by Liev Schreiber (Spotlight, Ray Donovan) as Chuck, The Bleeder co-stars Naomi Watts (Mulholland Drive), Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men, The Handmaid’s Tale), Ron Perlman (Hellboy) and Jim Gaffigan (The Jim Gaffigan Show) and is directed by Philippe Falardeau (The Good Lie...

There are no shortage of boxing movies and the familiar story of the rise to fame, only to lose it all through alcohol, drugs and women has been done before. The difference however with The Bleeder is Chuck Wepner (Liev Schreiber), the boxer on who’s life the film is based, best know for inspiring Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky (1976).
Chuck seemed to live up to his nickname as ‘The Bleeder’ and like Rocky, lead the fight more with granite chin than style and athleticism, as he continued to soak up the punches and move relentlessly forward. Wepner was never really taken seriously as a boxer and continued to work as a liquor salesman, but when he got a chance to fight for the heavyweight title, he made it count. He may not have won the fight, but the fact he managed to last 15 rounds in the ring with Muhammad Ali...

This weekend, the entire specialized industry is huddled in Cannes in search of the next big things. On the home front, just three noteworthy films opened, each on a single Manhattan screen. Two of them, the Bryan Cranston-starring “Wakefield” and Steve James’ financial world set documentary “Abacus: Small Enough to Jail,” showed some life.
Eleanor Coppola’s “Paris Can Wait” had a promising second-weekend expansion, and looks to be the standout over the next month and more. Still, results remain minor after a couple post-awards months led by “Gifted” and “The Zookeeper’s Wife.”

Hollywood’s love affair with boxing, underdog stories, and the struggles of the common man continues with Chuck, a true story which manages to breathe some fresh life into the well-worn genre. Liev Schreiber stars as Chuck Wepner, a New Jersey boxing hero in the early ‘70s, who’d earned the nicknamed ‘The Bayonne Bleeder’ (the film’s original, better title) because of the copious amounts of blood he’d lose during an average fight. In 1975 legendary boxing promoter Don King informed Chuck’s manager Al Braverman (Ron Perlman) that Muhammed Ali was looking to fight a white heavyweight after the ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ and Wepner happened to be the highest ranking one around. Ali was expected to make quick work of Wepner, but The Bleeder surprised everyone by going the distance and even knocking The Champ down (the fight was called in Ali’s favor 19 seconds before the...

Actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson has played his fair share of superheroes from the title character in Kick-Ass to Quicksilver in Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Age of Ultron, but in Doug Liman’s The Wall, he gets to play a real superhero; Sergeant Allen Isaac, a soldier in Iraq trapped behind the title wall and pinned down by a sniper. Said sniper finds a way to tap into Isaac’s earpiece, and he begins to play mind games with the young soldier while trying to find out more about his life, and his past.

As specialized distributors head to Cannes, Eleanor Coppola’s French valentine “Paris Can Wait” (Sony Pictures Classics) scored with arthouse moviegoers. It’s only the fourth 2017 limited release to break the increasingly rare $20,000 per-theater-average mark.
These days, movies with older audience appeal are sustaining the market — and will likely form the core demo for similar available new films at Cannes. These days, movies with older audience appeal are sustaining the market — and will likely form the core demo for similar available new films at Cannes. Rocky. Rocky II. Rocky III. Rocky IV….I could keep going and somehow we’ll end with Creed, but that doesn’t matter. What does, however, is who Rocky was inspired after, and what that man has to lay claim to fame.
Chuck Wepner is his name. He’s the man that went fifteen rounds in the ring with the man of the hour, Muhammad Ali. Chuck also happens to be the name of the new film coming out about his life in and out of the ring and show business. Directed by Philippe Falardeau (who had previously directed The Good Lie), the film stars Liev Schreiber as Chuck Wepner, Naomi Watts as Linda, Elisabeth Moss as Phyliss, Jim Gaffigan as John, and Ron Perlman as Al Braverman.
Of course, since this is a dramatic version of real life events, it wouldn’t be a film without having Sylvester Stallone...

IFC’s Chuck opens in St. Louis on May 19.
He was the pride of Bayonne, New Jersey, a man who went fifteen rounds in the ring with Muhammad Ali, and the real life inspiration for Rocky Balboa. But before all that, Chuck Wepner (Liev Schreiber) was a liquor salesman and father with a modest prizefighting career whose life changed overnight when, in 1975, he was chosen to take on The Greatest in a highly publicized title match. It’s the beginning of a wild ride through the exhilarating highs and humbling lows of sudden fame—but what happens when your fifteen minutes in the spotlight are up?
Driven by a committed performance from Liev Schreiber, Chuck is a refreshingly human tale of resilience and redemption. Elisabeth Moss and Naomi Watts costar.
Wamg invites you to enter for the chance to win Two (2) seats to the advance screening of Chuck on May 18 at 7Pm in the St.

French-Canadian filmmaker Philippe Falardeau has actually been making movies for almost twenty years, but it wasn’t until about 2011 when he first started getting attention for his drama Monsieur Lazhar, which was nominated for a foreign language Oscar. Falardeau’s 2014 movie The Good Lie, didn’t get much notice despite starring Reese Witherspoon and being released by Warner Bros. Therefore, he hasn’t quite made the waves into Hollywood as his country-mates Denis Villeneuve or Jean-Marc Vallée (Wild).
Undaunted, Falardeau decided to take on the story of Bayonne, New Jersey boxer Chuck Wepner, who famously went up against Ali at the height of his success in the ‘70s and managed to go 15 rounds before the fight was called due to Wepner’s famed “bleeding” during fights. Wepner was alternately known as “The Bayonne Brawler” and “The Bayonne Bleeder.”

A weak arthouse market was brightened by “The Lovers,” a high-concept A24 release targeted at the usual older specialty demo. Azazel Jacobs, an indie veteran without a breakout film to his credit, returned to the feature world from HBO (“Doll and Em”) with “The Lovers” (A24). Its initial results put it atop the results for the weekend which saw several disappointments.

Chicago – The 16th Tribeca Film Festival wrapped last Sunday (April 30, 2017) and the award-winning films of the festival have been named. Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com was there for the first week of Tribeca and files his personal best of the films he experienced.
This is Patrick switching to first person, and I was able to see 13 media and film works, and took a turn in the “Immersive” or Virtual Reality arcade (there will a separate article on that experience). I sampled TV, short films, documentaries and narrative films, and rank them from first preferred on down, but honestly I didn’t see anything that I didn’t like, which is a testament to the programmers of this iconic film festival.
The following are the prime 13, and an indication of when they are scheduled to release…

There really was a Rocky Balboa. Well, sort of. His name was Chuck Wepner, and when he wasn’t throwing punches in the ring, he sold liquor in New Jersey. In the mid-’70s, the “Bayonne Bleeder,” so nick-named for his habit of absorbing a lot of blows to the face, was at the right weight at the right time to score an unlikely title fight against the one and only Muhammad Ali—a match that inspired a young Sylvester Stallone, watching on his television from home, to mine the basic details of the boxer’s story for his own breakout star vehicle. Chuck, the new biopic about the real Wepner, dramatizes some of those same details, with much more fidelity to the facts. At the same time, it also acknowledges how Wepner’s life was changed by there being a movie (again, sort of) about his life. Imagine, if...

Liev Schreiber totally transforms himself into boxer Chuck Wepner in the conventional biopic “Chuck,” a movie about a man known for being able to take many punches. Wepner was nicknamed “the Bayonne bleeder” because he usually lost a lot of blood in the ring without getting knocked out, which is partly why he was picked by promoter Don King to fight against Muhammad Ali for the World’s heavyweight title in 1975. “Chuck” details Wepner’s home life before that famous fight and his relationship with his wife Phyllis (Elisabeth Moss), a postal worker who is continually getting angry about Wepner’s philandering.

It would be tough finding a harder working actor than Liev Schreiber who has successfully transitioned from supporting roles in movies to his very own TV show, playing fixer Ray Donovan on the Showtime series for five seasons. He’s received four Golden Globe nominations and two Emmy nominations playing that role.
In between seasons he’s found the time to make Chuck, a movie about the famed “Bayonne Brawler,” Chuck Wepner, whose career was documented in the Espn “30 for 30” doc, The Real Rocky. Besides being the New Jersey Heavyweight Champion in the ‘70s, Wepner famously went 15 rounds with Muhammad Ali, but his somewhat tragic story was also the inspiration for Sylvester Stallone to make Rocky.

Before Rocky Balboa, there was Chuck Wepner.
Feeling inspired after watching the Muhammad Ali vs. Wepner 1975 heavyweight boxing fight, a young Sylvester Stallone went home and wrote a script for a movie that would later become Rocky.
While the surprise smash, which would go on to win Best Picture in 1977, wasn’t directly based on a true story, it certainly wasn’t fiction. The character of Rocky Balboa, with his scrappy story, was loosely based on Wepner’s career and legendary fights.

Rocky is one of the greatest films of all time with it's incredibly inspiring story and characters. One of the interesting things about Rocky that some of you may not know is that he's based on the true story of Chuck Wepner, an average joe from New Jersey and was a liquor salesman... until he fought Muhammad Ali for almost 15 rounds in 1975!
The film follows Chuck's life from boxing Muhammad Ali to having Stallone talk to him about basing a movie on him to what happens after his fame begins to fade. It sounds like a very meta tale, but if done right could be really great.
With an Allstar cast of Liev Schreiber, Naomi Watts, Elisabeth Moss, Ron Perlman, Jim Gaffigan and Morgan Spector, it looks like it could be a surprise hit. The trailer certainly has moments of comedy and seriousness. It opens in select theaters starting May 5th.

Some people’s lives are best told truthfully, others more loosely.
In one corner, we have Rocky, the iconic Best Picture-winning boxing movie starring Sylvester Stallone as the made-up Rocky Balboa. In the other corner, we have Chuck, an upcoming biopic starring Liev Schreiber as real-life boxer Chuck Wepner. The latter primarily depicts the 1975 bout between Wepner and Muhammad Ali, which inspired Stallone to write the script for Rocky. He’s since tried to downplay the connection, especially after being sued by Wepner, but it’s close enough to being a film a clef as any.
Chuck received mostly positive reviews when it played the big film festivals last fall, but it’s unlikely to become the phenomenon, let alone Oscar darling, that Rocky was. Its legacy surely won’t be as lasting, in part because true biopics don’t tend to get sequels. There are a lot of benefits to fictionalized accounts of real events and...

"I toldya you know me: the 'real' Rocky." IFC Films has unveiled a trailer for an indie biopic titled Chuck, telling the story of boxer Chuck Wepner from New Jersey, who was the real life inspiration for the character of Rocky. So this is kind of like a closer-to-real-life version of Rocky, but not exactly as you will see in this trailer. Liev Schreiber stars as Chuck, who was a liquor salesman before he went on to fight Muhammad Ali for nearly 15 rounds in a match in 1975. The full cast includes Naomi Watts, Elisabeth Moss, Ron Perlman, Jim Gaffigan, and Morgan Spector. It looks like the film covers Chuck's story both before but mostly after the release of Rocky, earning additional recognition as the person the character was based on. I'm interested in this, but not sure it's really going to be better than any of the Rocky movies.
