My Oxford Year by Julia Whelan is a book that will linger with you long after you've turned the last page. The novel, which hit shelves in April, doesn't neatly fit into one genre. Take a coming-of-age arc, mix it with literary fiction, toss in a love story, add a pinch of poetry and enough British charm to make you swoon, and you'd find yourself with some of the magic Whelan's captured in her book.
The story packs in its fair share of surprises, so to keep things spoiler-free, here's the gist: at 24, American Ella Durran makes her way overseas to live out her lifelong dream of studying at Oxford. She's a driven, determined Rhodes Scholar who's stepping into the life she always planned for herself, and when she's offered a position in a promising politician's campaign, she agrees to work remotely and return to Washington...

Title: Fading of the Cries Writer-director: Brian Metcalf Starring: Jordan Matthews, Hallee Hirsch, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Brad Dourif, Mackenzie Rosman, Elaine Hendrix, Jessica Morris, Julia Whelan, Lateef Crowder A hobbled sci-fi thriller that cobbles together various disparate mythologies, the independently produced Fading of the Cries clearly doesn’t have the money to compete with the genre big boys, but it also lacks an imagination in presentation or execution that might enable it to escape the downward pull of its limitations. Writer-director Brian Metcalf utilizes special effects as a sort of tech-age concealer, to try to spackle over various production cracks and shore up narrative deficiencies, but the result is a risible hodge-podge...

Back in August of 2009 we weren't kidding when we said this one was deep in post-production, with release far off. However, almost two years later, the good folks behind Fading of the Cries have finally has announced a release for sometime in late May or early June. This is no direct-to-video release though, Eammon Films is planning on sending this one to theatres.
No details yet on how wide this will release, or the after-market plans. However, with a film of this scope, it's only fitting that it get some kind of theatrical release. Check out the trailer ... g'head we'll wait.
This looks like something far removed from the average indie film; boasting over 1,100 effects shots and genre mainstay Brad Douriff. Quite frankly, I'm also kind of a fan of Thomas Ian Nicholas. No I'm not kidding, he entertains me.
