Next Goal Wins is a biographical sports comedy-drama film directed by Taika Waititi, who also co-wrote the film with Iain Morris. Based on a novel of the same name by Mike Brett and Steve Jamison, the film revolves around a Dutch American Football coach Thomas Rongen, who gets a choice to either be fired or convert the American Samoa national team into a great team, which was considered to be one of the weakest team in the world. Next Goal Wins stars Michael Fassbender, Oscar Knightley, Elisabeth Moss, Will Arnett, Rachel House, David Fane, and Kaimana. So, if you love the sports comedy film here are some similar shows you could watch next.

Joan Jett has shared a cover of T. Rex’s “Jeepster,” part of the upcoming tribute compilation Angelheaded Hipster, out September 4th via BMG.
Featuring Marc Ribot on guitar, Thomas “Doveman” Bartlett on piano, and Jim White on drums, Jett takes the Electric Warrior track to new heights. “You slide so good/With bones so fair,” she sings, “You’ve got the universe reclining in your hair.” Later, just after the three-minute mark, her husky voice proclaims, “And I’m gonna suck ya!”

This Disney-made sports movie, based on a true story, is one of those wholesome, inspirational yarns in which the underdogs overcome every hurdle placed in front of them. Kevin Costner plays Jim White, a sports coach whose habit of giving underperforming athletes the Fergie treatment costs him his job. (He throws a football shoe, which ricochets over the locker and bloodies one team-member's face.)...

Transfer Deadline Day is here and for the next few hours there will be an inundation of flimsy transfer speculation, blue, white and red ticker bars and an obstreperous Jim White. Luckily for Manchester United fans, David de Gea’s name may not be mentioned by the aforementioned three as much as once imagined with the news that his proposed move to Real Madrid has collapsed due to ‘paperwork issues’ (wink, wink).
What a relief. The Red Devils now have a keeper who desperately wants to leave the club (although his stance may swiftly change by tomorrow morning) and who will undoubtedly sign for the Spanish giants in January. On and off the field, Louis van Gaal is doing his best to prove that Man United are no longer one of the biggest clubs in the world and after signing Monaco’s Anthony Martial for somewhere between £36-£50 million,...

To any self-respecting football fan, the football-barren summer months are a wasteland of endurance as inferior sports are paraded out in the parks, exhibited across green spaces, demonstrated on a baffling array of pitches and advertised on our television screens. The only glimmer of an oasis in the mirage of these peculiar summer sports is the transfer of one players’ Football Association registration from one club to another, or as Jim White calls it: The Transfer Window.
Never-the-less, a bit of money is actually exchanged in return for a player to kick a ball in a different coloured shirt, a few zeros are taken off one spreadsheet and added to another, press conferences are called and platitudes are spouted by the incoming media trained drone/professional footballer.
This is all very exciting for fans during the summer malaise, if bragging rights and mockery can’t be had over actual results & performances,...

Disney has its hands full keeping a wide range of genres spinning out films, but a growing concern of the company’s film movement seems to be looking back toward what has worked well before, and perhaps honoring Walt’s own efforts. Tomorrowland clearly made its statements, both oddly literal and thematic, about the past promise of the name Disney, and McFarland USA also reminds of a different era of film and franchise.
True stories always add another level to tales of underdogs and/or simply believing in yourself, and in this case we find ourselves in McFarland, CA with coach Jim White. Our opening seems like we have perhaps softened the blow of White’s fall from grace, as the High School football coach finds himself losing job after job for reasons which are explained away a little too quickly. From the moment a crotchety, tough-love high-school football coach rolls into McFarland, California — “one of the poorest towns in America,” populated mostly by immigrant Mexican agricultural workers — and spots some unappreciated talent for running among its students, you will be able to predict absolutely every beat of the story to come. Can this school, which has never even had a crosscountry team before, led by a man with no experiencing coaching track, win the state championship? Will Coach Jim White learn how to be a better person in the process? (Yes, his name is really Mr. White, and this is a true story, so that’s not invented, just perfectly apropos.

From Disney, McFarland USA is the true story of Jim White (played by Kevin Costner), a cross country coach in a small California town who transforms a team of disadvantaged high school athletes into championship contenders. When Jim Batts reviwed McFarland USA here at We Are Movie Geeks, he wrote “(director) Niki Caro expertly captures the look of this little burg that may seem insignificant, but his home to fiercely protective and supportive neighbors. She also captures the dedication of these runners that’s reminiscent of Chariots Of Fire. There’s the heat, the exhaustion, even the monotony. And even though they’re part of a team, there’s that solitary testing of one’s abilities. Unfortunately the screenplay doesn’t avoid the culture clash clichés with the uptight wasps lightening up by being near the colorful earthy ethnics. And there’s the familiar riff on the sports underdogs, the...

Chicago – Sports stories are made for the underdog, and it is the conduit for many immigrants and minorities to break through to the American Dream. “McFarland, USA” takes that idea and runs with it, as a high school cross country team of Mexican immigrants head towards the finish line.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Kevin Costner portrays the “coach,” with the same good vibes and unflappable air he has given all of his sports movie roles. This is based-on-a-true-story, so there actually is a cross country team in McFarland (north of Bakersfield, California), who kept winning because of the coach and the tradition established there. This is the origin story of that team in 1987, as the Mexican immigrant sons of “pickers” (field workers) become the core of the runners. The themes of poverty and wanting to belong to America run like a thread through the story, which per usual for sports stories involved second...

McFarland, USA is one of those inspirational underdog sports movies about never counting out unlikely contenders, and the film itself embodies that spirit. Here’s a movie that should be disposable at best, and racially condescending at worst, and yet it sticks with you. It comes by its emotions honestly and wins you over.Kevin Costner plays Jim White, who loses a cushy gig as an Idaho high school football coach after throwing a cleat at a mouthy player, and winds up in a seemingly dead-end job teaching life sciences and P.E. in working-class, largely Hispanic McFarland, California — one of the poorest towns in the country. He hates it there, and nobody seems to want him. “Diez, is that a popular name where you come from?” he snidely asks during attendance his first day, after noticing that three of the kids share the same last name. “White, is that...

The rains finally let up about 30 minutes ago, and a chilly wind now blows across the tiny central California agricultural town of McFarland. A group of high school boys in running shoes and gray sweatshirts crowd around Jim White as he climbs onto a bicycle. Niki Caro is one of the more fascinating filmmakers working today. The New Zealand native made a splash, both literally and figuratively, with her breakout feature "Whale Rider," a tender fairy tale laced with subtext about female empowerment and the cultural subjugation of women the world over. She followed it up with a brassy Hollywood debut, with the "Norma Rae"-esque "North Country" (starring Charlize Theron), before returning to New Zealand to direct another small film.
Now she's back, with the tremendous "McFarland, USA," a Disney based-on-a-true-story sports movie starring Kevin Costner as Jim White, a coach who, in the late '80s, led a group of inexperienced Latino kids to become champion cross-country runners. It's a typical Disney sports movie -- full of grit and hardwork and determination, but with a wonderful cultural specificity and gorgeous (35 mm!) photography.

There was a time no too long away that the Disney company was only known for animation. But after enormous success in that arena, Uncle Walt decided he needed to branch out into live action. After dipping his toe in the water with “true-life” nature shorts, he jumped all in with several features produced and filmed in Europe. Then he went all out with 1954’s smash 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea. Now, as with his animated features, these films usually played to family audiences. Walt had something of a studio staple of stars with the likes of Fred MacMurray, Hayley Mills, and Kurt Russell , He even had the top grossing film of 1968, The Love Bug. Really. After Walt passed on, the new studio heads in the 1980’s decided to branch out into more adult subject matter for new features. But these would not go out under the Disney name and so...

Personal Best: Caro Returns to Studio Filmmaking with Feel-Good Adaptation
It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything from New Zealand director Niki Caro, who made headlines with her 2002 sophomore film, Whale Rider, before making her Hollywood debut with 2005’s North Country. After the dismal reception of her 2009 effort, A Heavenly Vintage (aka The Vinter’s Luck), she’s helmed, of all things, a Disney film, McFarland, USA. Kevin Costner, once the penultimate star of mainstream, sports themed cinema, finds himself as the figure responsible for fostering athletic careers, moving from Ivan Reitman’s Draft Day to late 1980’s cross-country coach here. Caro’s film is the second ‘based on a true story’ minority flavored studio flick this year, following Sean McNamara’s Spare Parts, which also relates the travails of a group of Hispanic students overcoming odds to succeed in an organized school events. There is a recognizable template to inspirational sports dramas developed by Disney. You have a beleaguered coach figure trying to reclaim his former glory. You have a rowdy, unmotivated group of ragtag players that just need to add discipline to their raw talent to attain success. You have an antagonist buoyed by prestige or power that the underdog protagonists have to face. You have montages set to swelling music, and of course, the inevitable down-to-the-wire speech, of which any dedicated fan of the genre could recite a variation. Oh, and most of the time, they are based on a true story.
The sport is different but the song remains the same for McFarland, USA. Kevin Costner continues his dismal streak of performances after Three Days to Kill and Draft Day, as high-school football coach Jim White. After roughing up a student, White loses his job at an elite secondary school...

Over the years, the Disney based-on-a-true-story sports movie has become its own genre, ranging from the Kurt Russell-led hockey movie "Miracle" to last year's underseen baseball pic "Million Dollar Arm." The latest Disney sports movie is "McFarland, USA," which chronicles coach Jim White (played, winningly, by Kevin Costner) who in 1987 took an inexperienced group of Latino kids and turned them into an all-star cross country team. We're proud to debut a new set of arty posters for the film, designed by Los Angeles artist Fernando Reza that perfectly captures the spirit and culture of the movie. The posters (seen below) are done in a striking style that communicates the essential themes and ideas behind the movie (things like "Family" and "Optimism") while also being really, really beautiful. This is a movie that is all about determination, hard work and defying all the odds, and these posters convey that handily.

Inspired by the 1987 true story, McFarland, USA follows novice runners from McFarland, an economically challenged town in California’s farm-rich Central Valley, as they give their all to build a cross-country team under the direction of Coach Jim White (Kevin Costner), a newcomer to their predominantly Latino high school.
Coach White and the McFarland students have a lot to learn about each other but when White starts to realize the boys’ exceptional running ability, things begin to change. Soon something beyond their physical gifts becomes apparent—the power of family relationships, their unwavering commitment to one another and their incredible work ethic.

Just when you’ve given up any hope of a bus coming at all, four turn up to make Jim White’s head explode.
With time running out on the latest transfer window, Tottenham appear to have stolen a march on Newcastle United in the race to sign Mk Dons midfielder Delle Ali and are closing in on a permanent deal for the prospect. As part of the deal he will be loaned back to Mk Dons – the same deal that was apparently on the table with Newcastle.
Is that a smart move for Ali and Spurs? For the former, it’s an opportunity to play in a side that regularly qualifies for European competition – though it might be difficult to break into the first team at first – and for the latter it’s the chance to bring in one of England’s biggest talents to cement their future.

Arsenal don’t like to be predictable, but they have started to stick to something of a trend in recent transfer windows, pulling off major deals in the final hours with Jim White practically exploding in the Sky Sports studio at the very idea of it all. Arsene Wenger might have poured cold water on that particular fire in the past few days with the revelation that he’s not looking to sign anyone else after capturing Paulista, but he did suggest that exceptions could be made:
“If I wake up and someone exceptional stands in front of my door, I will open the door. It’s unlikely now.”
So what might exceptional look like for Wenger? He’s patched up his defence, and he will have his first choice striker back when Danny Wellback comes back from injury, but midfield still needs some attention to add...

Seeing as many football fans seem to get more excited about transfers than actual matches these days, it's no surprise how giddy people get about Transfer Deadline Day.
There are regular clichés: "come and get me" pleas, Jim White's two phones, "no value in the market in January" and the window "slamming shut", but none are more well-worn than Harry Redknapp being interviewed out of his car window.
So, when Rednkapp (not a wheeler-dealer... a fackin' football manager), told Sky's reporter Gary Cotterill that Qpr wouldn't be doing much today, this was inevitably how it was reported.

Kevin Costner’s return to the sports genre, a broad subject he so fiercely committed to throughout the 80s, will see him hitting the track as a high school sports coach. In McFarland, USA, he plays the grizzled Jim White. New to town, he takes on the challenge of rounding up his P.E. class and transforming them into a cross country team. Thrown into the mix are the usual tribulations of adolescence, familial struggles and the racial conflicts that the predominantly Latino team face.
Ahead of the film’s February release, Disney has now dropped a second trailer to stir up the crowds. Latching onto the same motifs as the first trailer, this sophomore preview catches us up on the background story before we get the chance to see the kids in action. Its focus is primarily on the town’s struggling status; a key element in the whole rags-to-riches story style.

Kevin Costner is heading back to the field to inspire a bunch of high-schoolers in McFarland, USA. Disney, who’ve carved out a name for themselves in the saccharine sports sub-genre, are behind this latest true life story, which is set in Central Valley, California.
Based on events that took place in 1987, the film follows a team of fledgling runners in a predominantly Latino high school. The arrival of new sports coach, Jim White (Costner), kickstarts a new era for the students, who together with their leader create a cross-country team. Along the way, they all learn that in order to achieve success, you must work together.
It’s not the most out-of-the-box storyline – an outsider rallies together a bunch of supposed no-hopers – but under the direction of Niki Caro (Whale Rider, North Country), it just might be. Caro’s reputation and eye for the details means this has the...

"You're our anchor Danny, and not just because you're fat." Following Million Dollar Arm this year, Walt Disney Pictures has another traditional inspiring sports drama coming to theaters early next year. McFarland, USA stars Kevin Costner and tells the true story of a group of amateur Hispannic runners in a small, struggling California farm town who try to overcome the odds and build a winning cross country team under the guidance of the town's newcomer Jim White (Costner). This looks just as cheesy as you would expect with messages about class and race not being subtle at all. But maybe it'll be all right? Watch! When it comes to football, one thing that stirs more debate than most is transfers. Fans are obsessed with finding out which players are being linked with their respective clubs on a daily basis, as well as checking who appears to be nearing the exit door. As the years have gone by the transfer window has become something of a phenomenon, so much so that we are all now sick of the sight of Sky Sports News presenter Jim White.
Some signings can bring great joy to supporters- the day Robbie Fowler rejoined Liverpool was momentous, and Fernando Torres’ arrival was met with great glee too- while others can leave you deeply unhappy because they have a track record of being pretty forgettable players. There are often more of the latter than the former.

A couple of hours are a long time on transfer deadline day: just try sitting and watching Jim White insist everything is the most exciting things he’s ever heard for ten minutes, and you’ll see exactly why.
And it seems that for Celtic a couple of hours have made all the difference, as one deal that was thought to be dead is now firmly back on.
Stefan Scepovic had initially turned down a move to Celtic, because the Sporting Gijon striker had instead decided to move to Getafe, but now that move has too collapsed and the Serbian is back on his way to Celtic Park, with the deal confirmed by Sky Sports News.
The striker, who has been capped eight times, signed a three-year deal with Sporting last summer, and scored 22 times last season.

Few things are certain in life: death, taxes and transfer windows. Transfer deadline day being what it is, it’s no surprise to see Sky Sports with their spin engine in full flow, and there’s still a long time before Jim White even gets anywhere near the cameras.
They’re already toying with fans, suggesting that something strange might have been happening at Liverpool, as a familiar face had been spotted sneaking into the Liverpool training ground. With sensationalism the order of the day, the news was that Luis Suarez was making a return to the club.
And then inevitably, it turned out that Suarez was just returning to pick up some personal effects as he’s in the process of moving from Liverpool to Barcelona, and had apparently gone to Melwood “bearing gifts”…

Strange things can happen on transfer deadline day. Jim White pretends to be on the phone in the middle of broadcasting and is somehow proclaimed a legend; Julian Faubert somehow convinced Real Madrid to sign him, and Alan Pardew once stood flanked by Javier Mascherano and a particularly bemused looking Carlos Tevez with West Ham shirts.
It’s also a day for frantic phone calls, ludicrous over-valuations and the kind of deals that must have had everyone involved beetroot red with embarrassment in the years since. But the end of the transfer window is called silly season for a reason, and it’s all down to the lack of logic that meets over-excitement and hype in a perfect storm to lead to the likes of Fernando Torres moving to Chelsea for approximately £40m more than he turned out to be worth.
