The Movie: "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs"
Where You Can Stream It: Netflix
The Pitch: In addition to being the final Coen Brothers film, "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs" is the most charming anthology Western about death you're ever likely to see. It's not only about death, but the specter of human mortality looms over all six segments of this film, which unfolds like a collection of short stories, complete with an actual book and the turning of pages onscreen.
In each story, a character meets their match in some way, whether it be through a musically inclined gunslinger or a math-inclined chicken. The sum total is a masterful, Oscar-nominated anthology where each tale holds its own pleasures yet also...

We take our lessons where we find them. Too many of mine, I find at the movies. Maybe it’s a generational fault; like others who came of age in the ’60s and early ’70s, I learned to think and talk in film lines. “I know it was you, Fredo.” “Who are those guys?” “Hey, I’m walkin’ here!” That sort of thing.
Lately, I’ve been hung up on not a line, but a title. That is, The Gal Who Got Rattled, which was one of six segments in the Coen brothers’ off-center 2018 Western anthology, The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs.

When I first saw that the Coen brothers had a new Western in the works, my ears perked up like a cowboy’s at the sound of a dinner bell. Something nourishing was on the grill and it was called “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.”
It wasn’t because Joel and Ethan Coen are great balladeers of the Old West. They’d only written one previous Western, “True Grit.” But they have put their unique voice as writers to good use across a range of genres from black comedy (“Fargo”) to crime drama (their Oscar-winning “No Country for Old Men”), to period comedy, to wry romance (“Intolerable Cruelty”).
For people who appreciate the art form that is the screenplay, a coming Coen brothers movie is like the next book from a favorite author.

Netflix dominated the 2019 Oscar nominations as expected thanks to Alfonso Cuarón’s “Roma,” which earned the streaming giant its first nomination for Best Picture. “Roma” is nominated for 10 Academy Awards this year, the most of any film aside from “The Favourite,” which also landed 10 nominations. While “Roma” is unquestionably Netflix’s crown jewel of Oscar season, the studio surprised with “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” the Coen brothers’ Western anthology film that had a strong showing with three nominations: Best Original Song, Best Costume Design, and Best Adapted Screenplay.
With their Best Adapted Screenplay nomination, Joel and Ethan Coen have now been nominated for seven screenwriting Oscars throughout their career. The duo won Best Original Screenplay for “Fargo” and Best Adapted Screenplay for “No Country for Old Men.” In a surprise turn of events, “Buster Scruggs” pulled off a nomination in the Best Adapted Screenplay category, a shock considering many...

You know the annual Oscar nominations announcement is going to be a lively one when things begin to enter a lull just before they drop, and that’s what it felt like ahead of Tuesday morning’s reveal. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, ever evolving and growing as a voting body, was sure to mix things up.
The biggest jaw-dropper was one some of us had lurking in the back of our heads: Bradley Cooper’s snub as director of “A Star Is Born.” The Academy’s directors branch has unceremoniously put actors-turned-directors in their place before, whether Ron Howard for “Apollo 13” or Ben Affleck for “Argo.” Cooper took the blow this year, for a film that came into the season strong, but has come up shy in recent weeks, from the Golden Globes to the Critics’ Choice Awards.
