Fans of Downton Abbey are cordially invited to the third motion picture from Focus Features and Carnival Films. The third entry will follow the recent installment, Downton Abbey: A New Era. The most recent outing from the popular British drama had been released back in 2022. Our own Chris Bumbray would mention in his review of A New Era, “Show mastermind Julian Fellows has written this as fan service, and it shows. There’s nothing wrong with that, but if you’re looking to finally get into Downton Abbey, this is a bad place to start as it not only assumes you’ve seen every episode, but it assumes you know them well. It’s strictly for fans, but I’m willing to bet there are still a lot of those out there.”

Just when you thought it was safe to forget which fork goes with which plate, Focus Features has announced a return to Downton Abbey. Currently titled “Downton Abbey 3” (surely a “Colon Something Something” is coming) this is the third theatrically-released feature film in the franchise that first launched on British television in 2010.
Series creator Julian Fellowes, Oscar-winning writer of Robert Altman’s “Gosford Park” (a very “Downton”-ish film), is writing the script. Simon Curtis, who directed “Downton Abbey: The New Era” in 2022, is back on board. His other work includes “My Week With Marilyn,” and “Woman in Gold.”
The film will boast Paul Giamatti, reprising the part of Harold Levinson, seen in the fourth season Christmas special from 2013. (That appearance won Giamatti an Emmy nomination for Best Drama Guest Actor.) Also new to the film franchise are Joely Richardson, Alessandro Nivola, Simon Russell Beale, and Arty Froushan. It lasts roughly a minute and consists of only a handful of shots (and none of Edgar Wright’s trademark visual wizardry), yet the moment in Shaun Of The Dead when Simon Pegg’s hapless hero and his group of survivors round the corner and bump into another group is possibly the film’s most ambitious gag. Mainly because the other gang is played by a who’s who (then and now) of British comedy: Martin Freeman, Reece Shearsmith, Tamsin Greig, Spaced mainstay Julia Deakin, Matt Lucas and, at the vanguard, Pegg’s Spaced co-creator, Jessica Hynes. A finer cavalcade of cameos, you’ll never see.

A Christmas Christie is a treat and Murder is Easy scratches that itch very nicely. Telling the story of a rural village of two halves where people keep getting murdered while the police seemingly do nothing, this latest adap written by Sian Ejiwunmi-Le Berre makes some meaty changes to Christie’s original story. Most noticeably our hero, Luke Fitzwilliam (David Jonsson) is no longer a white policeman but a young Nigerian diplomat. After encountering a lady on a train (Penelope Wilton) who tells him about the deaths in the village and that they were carried out by a respectable person with a point to make, and who is subsequently killed herself, Fitzwilliam feels it’s his duty to find out what’s going on.

After encountering a lady on a train (Penelope Wilton) who tells him about the deaths in the village and that they were carried out by a respectable person with a point to make, and who is subsequently killed herself, Fitzwilliam feels it’s his duty to find out what’s going on.
In the village of Wychwood Fitzwilliam meets a racist doctor (played by Mathew Bayton...

Agatha Christie would have approved of modern-day revisions to her written works, says her great-grandson James Pritchard.
This Christmas, the BBC is airing one of Christie’s lesser-known works, Murder is Easy, with its central character Luke Fitzwilliam given a Nigerian background, in a change to his character in the novel of the same name, published in 1939.
Pritchard, now in charge of the company overseeing his famous relative’s literary legacy and bringing it to new audiences, told the UK’s Radio Times magazine that he’s convinced Christie would have been in favour of making changes to her text, in terms of both storylines and characterisation.
He said:
“The first few adaptations of her plays were done by other people, and she didn’t like them because she didn’t think they were radical enough for the change in medium.
“She recognised that when you shift the medium, you need to shift the story…...

Nothing gold can stay, and to make room for everything new at Hulu in November, we have to say goodbye to dozens of the series and movies on the platform. The streamer will make room for its upcoming Christmas library by losing some of its horror-themed titles throughout the month, including “Stephen King's It,” most of its “Saw” franchise, and “Shaun Of The Dead.” Other major titles leaving the platform include Emma Stone’s breakthrough comedy “Easy A,” the Nora Ephron classic “Sleeping in Seattle,” and more.

Luke Evans may not be a favorable children’s character in The Beauty and the Beast, but in real life, he’s supporting organizations to help make children’s wishes come true.
On Monday night, Evans attended the Art of Wishes Gala and sat with Family Fortunes host Vernon Kay in London. The gala is held each year to fundraise for Make-a-Wish UK and, according to their website, has raised £9 million since it started.
Evans, who has made a name for himself onscreen, will be performing on the stages of London’s Duke of York’s Theatre on October 27. He will be playing Billy in Marcelo Dos Santos‘ play Backstairs Billy. Alongside Evans, Downton Abbey’s Penelope Wilton will play the Queen Mother.

“Everyone shouts out ‘Helen Mirren! Julie Walters! Dame Judi Dench!’ in the street at me all the time,” said Richard Osman in 2021, which is mad because he doesn’t even look anything like them, and must make it weird when he goes out to buy his morning latte.
Only kidding. After the millions of books he’s sold, there’s no way Richard Osman buys his own morning latte.
People are shouting those names at the author of the mega-successful Thursday Murder Club series as casting suggestions for the lead roles in the forthcoming movie adaptations. That’s who they want to see playing retired nurse Joyce – a terrible flirt (in that she excels at it) with a core of absolute steel and a person you’d absolutely want in your corner, and former British Intelligence agent Elizabeth – a great mind who can scheme a way out of any situation...

But while Shaun of the Dead star Simon Pegg admitted that he once “jokingly” wrote a treatment for a sequel that would have been called From Dusk Till Shaun, because Shaun of the Dead director Edgar Wright “thought it would be funny to do the film again, but with vampires”, he and Wright have both made it clear over the years that they really have no interest in making a sequel. And during a new interview with The Guardian, Pegg has said it’s time for fans to...

If this week's episode of the Empire Podcast seems even more incoherent than usual, that's because it was recorded very early in the morning. Mind you, that doesn't explain why Chris Hewitt, Helen O'Hara and James Dyer are incoherent at the best of times, but we digress.
In this episode, our intrepid trio tackle a listener question about Dodgeball 2 and end up answering a completely different Q; discuss the week's movie news, including almost everything that emerged from CinemaCon; and review Peter Pan And Wendy, Polite Society, and The Unlikely Pilgrimage Of Harold Fry. Chris also has lovely chats with the stars of that movie, Jim Broadbent and Penelope Wilton, and David Lowery, director of Peter Pan And Wendy, who reveals his love of Event Horizon. Do you see? Yes, we see. Enjoy.

Jim Broadbent’s Harold goes on a 600-mile quest in Rachel Joyce’s sad and quirky story that is undermined by its implausibility
Despite being impeccably acted, sincerely intended and often beautifully shot, there is something basically unsatisfying in this quirky/sad movie, adapted by Rachel Joyce from her own Booker-longlisted novel; it is undermined by issues of tone and plausibility connected with that word “unlikely” in the title. The film presents partly as a sentimental oldie heartwarmer, but also asks us to believe in it as something more serious and even tragic: an emotional investment made harder by the unreality of what we’re seeing.
Jim Broadbent and Penelope Wilton play Harold and Maureen, a retired couple living a life of quiet boredom and desperation in Devon. Out of the blue, Harold gets a letter saying that an old work colleague of his is now in a cancer hospice in Berwick-upon-Tweed.

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry tells the story of a man who starts walking… and doesn’t stop walking. To mark its release, we had the pleasure of speaking to that very man, as we caught up with Jim Broadbent, who takes on the eponymous lead role. He was paired with British screen legend Penelope Wilton, who plays Maureen Fry, the former’s wife. We then chatted to the author of the novel the book is based upon, Rachel Joyce, who also penned the screenplay.
We discussed the project, and Broadbent’s history with the novel it is based upon, and with the author, as Joyce played his daughter on stage 30 years ago. We discuss the adaptation process, the importance of good supporting roles, and of course, walking. Be sure to watch both interviews in their entirety below.

Coming to us from eOne, Rumble Films, and Blinder Films, Visitation will tell the story of a 14-year-old girl named Maria who, with her mother sick and dying, is sent away to live under the careful watch of Catholic nuns. Earlier this week, we saw Tom Cruise record a message thanking movie-goers for supporting Top Gun: Maverick and wishing everyone safe and happy holidays… while skydiving. Now his Mission: Impossible franchise co-star Simon Pegg has sent out his own holiday message in which he wonders what he could do to make a special message without “jumping off shit” like Cruise. But while he ponders what could make the message special, he happens to be recreating the “walk to the shop” scene from his 2004 zombie comedy Shaun of the Dead (watch it Here)!
Pegg’s message can be seen in the Instagram embed below, and if you want to compare it to the “walk to the shop” moment in Shaun of the Dead, that clip can be seen Here.

Queen Elizabeth II was the first British monarch to become a film and television character while she was still on the throne. Raucous historical romps about Henry VIII and Elizabeth I were all very well, but showing what a living king or queen got up to behind closed palace doors? That was another, almost treasonous matter. Even as recently as 1991, when Prunella Scales starred in a BBC film of Alan Bennett’s National Theatre play “A Question Of Attribution,” Bennett said “it still feels quite bold to portray her in the flesh.” And the practice was still contentious enough in 2020 for the UK’s then Culture Secretary, Oliver Dowden, to ask Netflix to put a disclaimer on screen before every episode of “The Crown,” explaining that the show was not actually a documentary.
But like so much else during Elizabeth II’s uniquely long reign, the protocol changed to a...

It may be this year’s ‘comfort food’ film but Julian Fellowes’ second theatrical sequel to his revered long-running TV show is quality goods — and may be better than the first one. Almost every actor is back, seemingly pleased as plum puddings to repeat their roles as either landed nobility or downstairs staff. The storyline ties a final bow on some characters and plot lines, and in a far more pleasing way than we thought possible. Even casual fans of the franchise ought to be charmed.

Downton Abbey has had a long and exciting run.
We had six seasons of, holiday-themed specials, and two movies.
Hugh Bonneville, who has been with the franchise since the beginning, thinks the franchise could be over after the latest movie.
“I suspect, if there is [a new series], it would be a reboot. An origin story or something like that,” the star said to The Hollywood Reporter of rumors of a TV comeback.
The star said that Bridgerton highlighted that "there's clearly an appetite for these sorts of shows."
"Bridgerton has been a magnificent success,” he continued.
“So if you can capture the younger generation to enjoy people in frocks, then go for it.”
Bonneville went on to state that it is "immensely unlikely" the original cast would return for future projects.
“It’s seven years since we did the TV show. Returning as we did for those two films was really lovely,...
