Carrie Underwood is a household name in country music, and is one of the biggest-selling artists to ever make waves in the genre. She is more than qualified to speak on country music, and recently, she gave her honest, raw take on the current state of the genre. So, what did she have to say?
Carrie Underwood Has Come A Long Way Since Her American Idol Start
Carrie Underwood was first introduced to a national audience when she competed on American Idol. She was the winner of Season 4 all the way back in 2005. Even back then, audiences recognized her star power. She may have not fully realized all of that potential until after winning her season, along with everything that came after, but the seeds for what she would become were already planted.

Blake Shelton did not write his country hit “Hillbilly Bone.” The “God Gave Me You” singer had a lot to say about the musician who wrote it. Notably, the tune performed a lot better on the country chart in the United States than it did on the all-genre chart.
The writer of Blake Shelton’s ‘Hillbilly Bone’ was behind many great tracks
During a 2010 interview with CMT, Shelton discussed putting albums together. “That’s the hardest thing about making a record — finding those songs that you instantly love that you don’t instantly get tired of,” he said. “That’s usually what happens. I was just lucky this time around with ‘Hillbilly Bone’ and ‘Almost Alright.’
“For whatever reason, [songwriter] Craig Wiseman has taken an interest in me as a singer,” Shelton added. “He’s been very active in getting songs to me as quickly as he can, which is awesome...

This season of Love Is Blind had a remarkable share of awkward moments. Even Netflix’s attempt at a live reunion was cringey in its tardiness. But to country fans, perhaps nothing was more Wtf than the obsession of Season 4’s owl-loving weirdo Zack with Lee Ann Womack’s 2000 hit “I Hope You Dance.”
To be clear, it’s not his obsession with the song that made us wince — written by Mark D. Sanders and Tia Sillers and selling a message about holding on to your sense of wonder, it’s a country classic.

Love Is Blind is easily one of the buzziest shows on Netflix — and with the recent advent of the fourth season, it is clear that fans are as captivated by the show as ever before. Early on in the series, one particular contestant emerged as a favorite. Zack Goytowski, an attractive young criminal defense attorney, developed a strong connection with Bliss Poureetezadi, only to dump her for another woman.
He would go on to reconnect with Poureetezadi in a heartwarming twist — and many Love Is Blind fans are still discussing the sweet scenes that the two shared throughout the course of the season. In a recent Instagram post, Goytowski responded to a fan who expressed appreciation for the unabashed love Goytowski has for the song “I Hope You Dance.”

When it came time for Joshua Hedley to begin work on his second album, the polished Nineties country homage Neon Blue, the neo-traditionalist had only one guiding principle: make a record to be played on a pontoon boat.
“After these last couple years we’ve had, I felt like I didn’t want to hang my sad-sack, typical brand on people,” Hedley says. ‘I wanted to make a record that people could party to.”
Part of this was an artist’s desire to avoid self-repetition. Hedley’s 2018 debut, Mr. Jukebox,...

The Academy posted videos of both artists getting the news from country superstar Miranda Lambert. Wilson still has a shot at winning something next week, as well: She’s up for song of the year for her No. 1 country hit “Things a Man Oughta Know.” McCollum has also earned a No. 1 song of his own, “Pretty Heart,” although the 2020 hit preceded the eligibility period for this year’s awards.
Both artists will get a performance slot on the show, which is foregoing a network broadcast component and will stream exclusively from Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium at 8 p.m. Et/5 Pt.

One of Lainey Wilson’s early jobs was performing as a Hannah Montana impersonator at birthday parties and county fairs. The native of tiny Baskin, Louisiana, would travel all around the Deep South and run through the musical repertoire of Miley Cyrus’ breakout TV role. Wilson would sometimes “open” for Hannah too — under her own name.
“I’d be like, ‘Can Lainey Wilson open the show?’” Wilson recalls in her thick Southern drawl. “They’d be like, ‘Who’s Lainey?’ I’d be like, ‘The person you hired to be Hannah Montana!

Pioneering Black country superstar Charley Pride will be the subject of a 90-minute CMT special set for August, the network is announcing today, with stars like Luke Combs, Garth Brooks, Mickey Guyton and Darius Rucker participating in the commemoration.
Titled “CMT Giants: Charley Pride,” the special will be arriving when Pride-pride is still at a peak level, with his name constantly brought up in the current conversations about race and country music, and how his ascent to the top of the genre in the 1970s represented both an enormous breakthrough as well as an opportunity to keep the door open that was lost.
The special will premiere August 25 at 9 p.m. Et on the cable network.
“I am delighted to have so many ‘giants’ in the business celebrate the legacy of Pride,” said Rozene Pride, who was married to the singer for 54 years. “He would have been so happy to...

Mando Saenz titled his first album in eight years All My Shame. But the veteran Nashville songwriter who’s had his songs recorded by Miranda Lambert, Midland, and Lee Ann Womack has nothing to regret. Despite the heaviness of the record’s title, Saenz isn’t repenting for past sins. Instead, he’s celebrating the empowerment that comes with finally knowing oneself.
“You might think it’s a shameful thing, but it’s about being yourself and knowing your flaws,” Saenz says. “Sometimes you just got to put it out...

A few nights ago, Tanya Tucker was listening to Apple Music at her Texas ranch. She heard songs by her favorite singers including Nina Simone, Gordon Lightfoot, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson — and then she heard herself. The song was “Mustang Ridge,” from her 2019 album While I’m Livin’, produced by Brandi Carlile and Shooter Jennings.
“I thought, ‘You know what? I’m so much better now,'” says Tucker, who turned 62 in October. “I feel like I sing better, I sound better. I don’t know, I guess the stars lined up again for me.

Jerry Lee Lewis turned 85 years old on September 29th — a remarkable milestone, especially considering that Lewis was one of the hardest-living of all the original Fifties rock & roll pioneers. He suffered a serious stroke last year, but regained his ability to play the piano in time to cut a gospel album in Nashville in January. Belatedly, Lewis will celebrate his birthday with a virtual livestream event on October 27th.
Hosted by John Stamos, the event will feature performances and tributes from friends including Elton John, former President Bill Clinton, Willie Nelson,...

Did we call it or did we call it? Carole Baskin will hit the floor for her second dance on “Dancing with the Stars” to yet another kitty-themed song: “What’s New Pussycat” by Tom Jones. Tptb can’t stop, won’t stop.
The “Tiger King” star and Pasha Pashkov have the Viennese waltz, which might be slow enough to help them improve on their score of 11 for their paso doble on the premiere. The Viennese waltz is one of seven dances on deck for Week 2 — foxtrot, samba, tango, rumba, cha-cha and jive being the others.
Busting out the tough samba and rumba this early feels wrong, but Skai Jackson has the former and Justina Machado has the latter. They topped the leaderboard Week 1, each with a 21, and all signs so far point to them being able to handle whatever Alan Bersten and Sasha Farber, respectively, throw at them. Chrishell Stause also has the rumba,...

Hannah Brown became the first Bachelorette to win “Dancing with the Stars” last season, and don’t think Kaitlyn Bristowe hasn’t thought about making it two in a row — even if she’s acting like it.
The Season 11 “Bachelorette” star is “pretending” not to acknowledge the possibility of extending Bachelor Nation’s reign on the dance floor to keep the pressure off herself, she told “Entertainment Tonight.” “Alan [Bersten] was Hannah’s partner, and he also is a great partner, and they got high scores, so could it be back-to-back Mirrorballs? Who knows?” she said.
“I agree that is a bit of a pressure, but it is a reactive audience,” her partner Artem Chigvintsev added. “If the audience decides this is the one that should be holding the Mirrorball trophy, than this is the one.”

The title of Waylon Payne’s upcoming second album is a mouthful. The Nashville-based singer-songwriter’s Blue Eyes, the Harlot, the Queer, the Pusher, & Me derives its name from a bleak period in Payne’s life when he was in the grips of a debilitating drug addiction and grieving the death of his mother, “Help Me Make It Through the Night” singer Sammi Smith. One of Payne’s friends in their self-described “drug den” would regularly sing Kris Kristofferson’s “The Silver Tongued Devil and I,” prompting Payne to spit...

Jason Isbell delivers an acoustic rendition of John Prine’s “Hello in There” for the latest installment in the Alzheimer’s Association’s Music Moments compilation, a project that finds artists tackling songs they appreciate on an emotional level.
“I think ‘Hello in There’ is pretty perfect, as far as songs go,” Isbell said in a behind-the-scenes video. “John Prine’s one of my favorite songwriters in the world. John wrote it when he was in his early 20s, which to me is unthinkable, because the song has so much wisdom.

Sting recorded a laid-back cover of Otis Redding’s “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay.” The release marks the first installment of the Alzheimer’s Association’s “Music Moments,” a project where artists tackle songs they appreciate on an emotional level.
Throughout the track, Sting whistles and croons over an acoustic guitar and soft waves of brass. In an accompanying video, the rocker discusses his connection to the classic, reflecting on his youth in Wallsend, England. “When I was 16, I had no idea how to achieve my dreams,” he says.

“Doesn’t the sun ever shine here?” cracks Lee Ann Womack, spiking the last word with her bright Texas twang. She’s been in Brooklyn for the better part of a December week, the skies a mostly unremitting gray, and with a storm now on the way. “It’s so gloomy! But it’s good for making country music — my kind of country, anyway.” Frankly, it makes her want to drink. But it’s early afternoon and there’s work to do, so she heads for the cooler filled with bottled water and kombucha.

Tanya Tucker remains the “female Elvis,” a moniker she earned from the King himself more than 40 years ago. For nearly two hours during her “Tanya Tucker & Friends” show on Sunday night, the charismatic entertainer karate-chopped, high-kicked, and hip-thrusted her way across the stage at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, delivering both songs she transformed into indelible hits when she was just a teenager and material off her Grammy-nominated album While I’m Livin’. It was a scenery gobbling performance, but a master class in how to inject actual spontaneity into a country music concert.
