David Adjmi’s Stereophonic was named Best Play of the year by the New York Drama Critics’ Circle today, with the Best Musical Award going to the Off Broadway production of Dead Outlaw from the team behind The Band’s Visit.
Stereophonic, currently on Broadway, has received 13 Tony Award nominations, and includes songs written by Will Butler from the indie rock band Arcade Fire. The play tells the story of a fractious 1970s Fleetwood Mac-like rock band recording what will be a massive Rumours-like hit record.
Dead Outlaw, with music and lyrics by David Yazbek and Erik Della Penna and a book by Itamar Moses, is inspired by the life of Elmer McCurdy. The musical, which premiered this year at the Minetta Lane Theatre, was originally conceived by Yazbek and tells the story of an outlaw from the early 20th Century whose corpse became a traveling sideshow exhibit for decades.

Nominations for the 2024 Outer Critics Circle Awards were announced on Tuesday, April 23. The stars of the hit Broadway revival of “Merrily We Roll Along,” Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez and Daniel Radcliffe, read off the nominees live from the Museum of Broadway.
Off-Broadway productions ultimately out-paced Broadway with this critics group. The new David Yazbek musical “Dead Outlaw” led the pack with nine nominations. It was followed by “The Connector,” another Off-Broadway musical, and “Stereophonic,” a lauded Broadway play, with seven nominations each.
While there are no Tony nominators in the Outer Critics Circle membership, these nominations can provide some clues as to how theater aficionados are thinking about this season’s Tony race. Of the five productions cited for Best New Broadway Musical, only “Days of Wine and Roses” and “Suffs” made the cut in the all-important Best Score category. Nominations for the 39th Annual Lucille Lortel Awards were announced today by Amber Iman and George Abud, two stars of Broadway’s “Lempicka.” The Lortels honor outstanding achievement in Off-Broadway theater. The 2024 ceremony will take place on Sunday, May 5 at NYU Skirball Center. The Lucille Lortel Awards are produced by the Off-Broadway League and Lucille Lortel Theatre, with additional support provided by Tdf.
It’s common for productions to begin their life Off-Broadway before transferring to the Main Stem, so many of this year’s Tony Awards hopefuls are among the list of Lortel nominations. Chief among these contenders is “Hell’s Kitchen,” the semi-autobiographical musical from Alicia Keys. That tuner garnered five Lortel nominations. These include Best Musical, Best Choreography for Camille A. Brown, a Lead Performer bid for Maleah Joi Moon, and Featured Performer bids for Shoshana Bean and Kecia Lewis. All performance categories at the Lortel Awards are gender neutral.

The top honorees at the 2023 Laurence Olivier Awards were plays that focused on cultures outside of London. “My Neighbour Totoro,” which is based on the beloved Japanese film of the same name from Studio Ghibli, won six trophies, the most of the night, including Best New Comedy, Director, and four craft categories. A revival of the American classic “A Streetcar Named Desire” by Tennessee Williams claimed three: Best Play Revival and for lead Paul Mescal and featured player Anjana Vasan. Meanwhile, the British-based “Prima Facie,” which is set to bow on Broadway this month and will thus compete at the Tony Awards, took home two prizes for Best Play and for star Jodie Comer.
The only other productions to win more than one trophy were all musicals. “Standing at the Sky’s Edge” won two of the top prizes: Best Musical and Best Original Score or New Orchestrations. “Tammy Faye,...

Two new works based on existing material dominated the nominations for the 2023 Olivier Awards, the top theatre honor in Britain. “My Neighbour Totoro” and “Standing at the Sky’s Edge” lead the play and musical fields with nine and eight bids apiece. The former is a stage adaptation of the Studio Ghibli film of the same name, brought to life in a visually stunning production featuring impressive puppetry by Basil Twist. “Standing at the Sky’s Edge” uses songs from the Richard Hawley album and new material to tell the story of three families in a Sheffield housing complex.
Revivals had strong showings, too. Director Daniel Fish’s remounting of “Rodger & Hammerstein’s Oklahoma!” and the Paul Mescal-led “A Streetcar Named Desire” netted seven and six nominations, respectively. This production of “Oklahoma!” previously played Broadway and received eight Tony Award nominations, including wins for Best Revival and Featured Actress...

Only an elite group of 19 artists so far have achieved Egot status, winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony.
The rare and coveted Egot is not easy to come by, so it’s not surprising that fewer than two dozen have achieved this status. And while the artists don’t get a final Egot trophy when it happens, its nonetheless one of show business’ greatest honors.
So, who does have the Egot?
Andrew Lloyd Webber, John Legend, Tim Rice, Rita Moreno, Audrey Hepburn, Mel Brooks, Mike Nichols, Whoopi Goldberg, Helen Hayes, Marvin Hamlisch, Robert Lopez, Richard Rodgers, John Gielgud, Jonathan Tunick, Alan Menken, Jennifer Hudson, Viola Davis and Scott Rudin are those who have won all four awards competitively.
While Barbra Streisand, James Earl Jones, Harry Belafonte, Quincy Jones and Liza Minnelli have all received honorary non-competitive awards, not everyone considers them to be Egot achievements.

“The Book of Mormon” won nine of its 14 bids at the 2011 Tony Awards. This smash hit tuner from “South Park” creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone about the misadventures of two Mormon missionaries in Africa won Best Musical, Director Score, Book, Orchestrations, Lighting Design, Scenic Design and Sound Design.
While “The Book of Mormon” fell shy of the record dozen Tonys taken home by “The Producers” in 2001, Parker tied the achievement of Joshua Logan (“South Pacific”) with four wins in one night as a producer, director, librettist and lyricist.
Parker and his creative partner Matt Stone have shared in five Emmy Awards for Best Animated Series for the long-running Comedy Central hit “South Park.” Along with “Avenue Q” Tony champ Robert Lopez, they picked up the prizes for Best Book and Best Score. Exclusive: The strange, true-life story of Elmer McCurdy, a turn-of-the-20th Century train robber whose corpse became a carnival attraction and unwitting stage prop well into the 1970s, will be adapted into a musical by the writers of Broadway’s acclaimed The Band’s Visit.
The new theater piece, titled Dead Outlaw, will feature music and lyrics by David Yazbek and Erik Della Penna, with a book by Itamar Moses. The project marks the first reteaming of Yasbek and Moses since their multiple-Tony-winning The Band’s Visit, which made its Broadway debut in 2017.
Yazbek and Della Penna have composed 14-songs for Dead Outlaw, and a premiere presentation is scheduled for March 14 at the Manhattan venue 54 Below.

Update, with Leslie Odom Jr., Daveed Diggs nominations No one’s saying it will be easy, but Hamilton actors Renée Elise Goldsberry, Leslie Odom Jr. and Daveed Diggs, along with WandaVision songwriter Kristen Anderson-Lopez, each came a little closer today to the rarified Egot status with their respective Emmy Award nominations.

The Society of Composers & Lyricists has been around for nearly 75 years, but not until this year did the organization start its own annual awards program for music appearing in film, TV and videogames — and the nominees announced Tuesday for the inaugural show are certain to be scrutinized as a bellwether for what to expect as the Motion Picture Academy’s music branch votes on shortlists for the song and score categories.
As expected, Hildur Gudnadóttir scored nominations in film and TV categories alike, with nods for her work on “Joker” and “Chernobyl,” respectively. Tootsie, the Broadway musical that had an easier time charming critics than winning potential ticket buyers, will play its final performance on Sunday, January 5. The musical, based on the hit Dustin Hoffman movie from 1982 and a winner of two Tony Awards, will have played 293 regular and 25 preview performances since opening April 23 at the Marquis Theatre.
Producers announced the closing tonight. Sources say the cast was informed earlier today.
Fronted by the Tony Award winner Santino Fontano as the Michael who becomes the Dorothy to get the job, Tootsie features Robert Horn’s Tony-winning book and a score by David Yazbek (The Band’s Visit) and direction by Scott Ellis.
Most Broadway bettors might have put money on Tootsie‘s success last spring, at least over the generally lesser-well-reviewed Beetlejuice, but they’d have lost. Last week, Beetlejuice grossed $1.2 million – 93% of its potential at the Winter Garden Theatre – and filled 97% of its seats.

Last week, Tootsie joined Broadway’s million dollar club – the choice group of productions that break the $1 million mark in weekly box office. Along with 11 Tony Award nominations and a star-making turn by lead actor Santino Fontana, the musical adaptation of the 1982 film comedy starring Dustin Hoffman can, in retrospect, seem like a no-brainer, the type of Broadway success that complainers complain about when they gripe over Hollywood pedigrees.
But take a closer look at To Kill A Mockingbird, Network, Pretty Woman, Beetlejuice and Tootsie, and what jumps out are their differences, specifically their varying approaches to their source material. Mockingbird went meta, Network post-modern high tech. Pretty Woman could have benefited from less respect for its celluloid self, Beetlejuice from more.
Of the musicals, Tootsie found the sweetest balance between old and new, all the more surprising given what would seem, at first consideration, a storyline and worldview best left to the ’80s.

The Ferryman, What The Constitution Means To Me and Tootsie continued to build some awards momentum this week, with the New York Drama Critics Circle naming Jez Butterworth’s The Ferryman the 2018-19 season’s best play, Heidi Schreck’s Constitution as the best American play and Robert Horn/David Yazbek’s Tootsie best musical.
All three productions are in the Tony Awards race. Hadestown, the most Tony-nominated show, was deemed ineligible for the Nydcc trophy since the Anais Mitchell musical had been eligible for the critics’ award as an Off Broadway production in 2016.
The Nydcc awards will be presented at a private reception on Monday, May 13. Special citations were voted to Off Broadway theater companies Irish Repertory Theatre and Page 73, as well as the National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene production of Fiddler on the Roof.

Refresh for updates The lush, very-downtown musical Hadestown topped the Tony Awards nominations list with 14, with the more traditional jukebox musical Ain’t Too Proud coming in at second with 12, a one-two punch as clear a sign as any that Tony voters are in a very expansive mood this year.
At #3, Tootsie has 11 nominations; The Ferryman 9 and Beetlejuice 8.
But the big surprise were the no-votes in the Best Play category for both To Kill A Mockingbird and Network, particularly for Aaron Sorkin’s gloriously reviewed and wildly popular adaptation of Harper Lee’s novel. That omission might be the single biggest Tony snub in years, if not decades.
Deadline will examine that omission and other surprises in a complete analysis of the Tony nominations by Deadline theater critic Greg Evans, coming shortly. Check back soon.

“She’s an independent, self-made, strong woman,” declares Lilli Cooper of her character in the new musical adaptation of “Tootsie.” Cooper plays Julie Nichols in David Yazbek’s new musical comedy on Broadway. She jumped at the chance to portray a great female role and discussed the process of creating the show with Gold Derby. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
“I’m not a Jessica Lange type,” says Cooper. Lange played Julie in the original film opposite Dustin Hoffman and won an Oscar for her efforts. While it was initially intimidating to step into the role, Cooper ultimately connected with the ways in which Julie, and the story itself, were updated and made relevant for modern audiences. “I didn’t feel like I ever needed to imitate Jessica Lange… I felt a lot of freedom in my ability to create my own version of Julie.”

We’ve all had that moment of genius, usually while getting stuck on TCM, when the brilliant idea reveals itself to us: This film really deserves a remake, an update stripped of archaic notions or bad hair and polished to a shiny modern sheen. Some movies all but demand it. Tootsie isn’t one. Sydney Pollack’s 1982 film starring Dustin Hoffman seems so perfectly of its time – right down to the blissful ignorance of its unexamined mansplaining – that any fiddling would seem as unnecessary as spray tan on a president.
You’ll have just enough time during the false-start opening moments of director Scott Ellis’ wonderful new Tootsie to ponder such things, and then the musical and its star Santino Fontana grab hold and don’t let go. It’s not without a few runs in its stockings, but this Tootsie is a delight, a not-quite-blind date that plays out...

Let’s hear it for Tootsie, the laugh-out-loud funniest musical of the Broadway season. Yes, it’s another tune-filled spin on a hit movie — Pretty Woman, King Kong, the list goes on. But this one is actually good — hell, better than good, it’s musical-comedy heaven. Using the beloved 1982 movie with Dustin Hoffman as a launching pad, the singing-dancing Tootsie still features an unemployed asshole of an actor who has to dress up as a woman to land a part. The standard formula for movie-to-musical adaptations is to take what worked onscreen, add a few songs, set it in the present (e.g., updating Mean Girls to the Instagram age), then put it onstage. But in adapting Tootsie, the 1982 Sydney Pollack movie that opens as a Broadway musical at the Marquis Theatre on April 23, book writer Robert Horn and composer David Yazbek threw out the playbook.

It may seem inconceivable that The Princess Bride rolled into theaters over 30 years ago, but it's the truth. Yet, even as the years pass, the 1987 film and its many memorable quotes have stood the test of time. Perhaps that's why Disney decided to take Princess Buttercup and Westley's storyline on another adventure: this time as an onstage musical!
There have been rumors of a Princess Bride musical for a number of years, but our wishes are finally becoming a reality now that a new creative team is in place. The musical is still in its early stages, but according to Deadline, Disney Theatrical Productions have tapped The Band's Visit's David Yazbek as the composer and lyricist, along with The Prom's Bob Martin and The Cher Show's Rick Elice as book writers. Apparently people who have rank in the world of making musicals have been talking about making The Princess Bride into a Broadway musical for years now. Things had been at a bit of a standstill for quite some time until just recently, when a new creative team was hired to pull this thing together.
Composer and lyricist David Yazbek, who is responsible for the music and lyrics for the Broadway musicals The Full Monty, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, The Band’s Visit, Tootsie, and others, has jumped on board, as well as book writers Bob Martin and Rick Elice.
The musical will be based on the 1973 novel by William Goldman and the beloved 1987 film adaptation which starred Cary Elwes as Westley, Robin Wright as Princess Buttercup, Mandy Patinkin, Wallace Shawn, Andre the Giant, Fred Savage, Peter Falk, and many others.
This becoming a musical adaptation on Broadway just seems like a no-brainer.

Disney’s The Princess Bride has been flirting with Broadway for years, but the ever popular tale seems to be taking another step down – or at least toward – the aisle with the putting in place of a new creative team: composer and lyricist David Yazbek and a book writers Bob Martin and Rick Elice.
Disney Theatrical Productions confirmed today that the team has been recruited, but few other details – when, where, who else – were forthcoming about a stage adaptation for the 1987 Rob Reiner movie.
Yazbek is a Tony winner for The Band’s Visit, the Broadway hit now in its final stretch (closing date April 7), and his Tootsie is currently in previews at Broadway’s Marquis for an April 23 opening. Both Martin and Elice have shows currently on Broadway: Martin’s The Prom and Elice’s The Cher Show.

Gold Derby’s 2019 Tony Awards prediction center is now open! Broadway productions must open by an April 25th cutoff date in order to be eligible for Tony consideration. So it’s time to make your early predictions in the race for Broadway’s highest honors.
Last year, “The Band’s Visit” stormed the ceremony with a whopping 10 wins, including Best Musical. David Yazbek finally became a Tony winner for his intimate Middle Eastern inspired score, and he will be back in contention this year for “Tootsie.” The musical adaptation of the classic film stars previous Tony nominee Santino Fontana (“Cinderella”) in the role Dustin Hoffman made famous. The show will face serious competition from “Hadestown,” a riff on the Orpheus and Eurydice myth with a folk opera score from Anais Mitchell. Director Rachel Chavkin (“The Great Comet”) has guided the show through successful runs Off-Broadway and in London, and is...

Broadway’s The Band’s Visit, winner of 10 Tony Awards, a commercial success and widely praised by critics, will play its final performance on Sunday, April 7, producers announced today.
“In a polarized and harsh world of politics and division, the success of The Band’s Visit has filled my heart with so much warmth and I am so grateful to the theater community who has lifted our show to these heights,” said lead producer Orin Wolf (read his entire statement below).
A national tour of the musical will launch June 25 in Providence, Rhode Island, followed by Washington, D.C.; Charlotte, Nc; Chicago; Minneapolis; Baltimore; San Francisco; and Las Vegas, with more cities to be announced.
When the Broadway production closes April 7, it will have played 589 regular performances and 36 previews at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre. The production began Oct. 7, 2017, and by the following September had recouped its $8.75 million capitalization.

As of this writing “Jesus Christ Superstar” is predicted to win this year’s Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album with 82/25 odds. It’s a live recording of NBC’s Emmy-winning telecast, unlike the other nominees, which are studio recordings of traditional stage productions. Could that help or hurt “Superstar”?
This isn’t the show’s first time at the Grammys. The original concept album was nominated for Album of the Year back in 1972, but lost to Carole King for her second studio album, “Tapestry.” The very next year the Broadway cast recording was nominated for Album of the Year, but it lost too; Grammy voters picked “The Concert for Bangladesh” by George Harrison and Friends instead. So the iconic rock opera has a major Grammy Iou, especially considering how its creators — composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice — went on to win multiple Grammys themselves.

Exclusive: Wme has signed Santino Fontana, the actor set for the lead role – or roles – in Broadway’s upcoming Tootsie, for representation in all areas.
Fontana, who voiced Prince Hans in Disney’s animated feature Frozen and was Tony-nominated for playing Prince Topher in Broadway’s 2013 production of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella, has been cast as Michael Dorsey/Dorothy Michaels in the Tootsie musical previewing at the Broadway’s Marquis Theatre March 29 (opening date is April 23).
Fontana originated the role – made famous by Dustin Hoffman in the classic 1982 movie – for the musical’s pre-Broadway Chicago engagement. Scott Ellis directs, with a book by Robert Horn and original score by David Yazbek (The Band’s Visit).
The actor also was seen in the Tina Fey-Amy Poehler Universal Studio’s comedy Sisters, and starred in the first two seasons of the CW’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend as Greg.

The 72nd edition of the Tony Awards has concluded. While this continues to be one of the best produced award shows on television, some aspects of this year’s presentation were better than others. So sit back and enjoy my take on the good, bad and ugly of this year’s Tony Awards (and check out the complete list of winners here).

The Tony Awards have the best acceptance speeches of any ceremony on television. The gracious nature of so many of the winners is always a highlight, and this year brought several new favorites to the forefront:

Ah, how young and foolish we were. It seems like it was just two days ago that Variety — and the rest of the Broadway community — were all so very sure of Tony predictions. But nope: The ceremony for the 2018 Tony Awards gave us plenty of surprises to chatter about after the show.
Surprise: A sweep for “The Band’s Visit”
Sure, we all knew “Band’s Visit” would win the big prize for new musical, plus a few more trophies in categories like actress (Katrina Lenk) and score (David Yazbek), but most observers were thinking the show — a quiet, intimate tale set in a tiny Israeli town — was too small and artsy to make it a clean sweep of it. It wasn’t: “Band’s Visit” won a whopping 10 Tonys (all but one of the 11 for which it was nominated), including book of a musical (Itamar Moses) and actor (Tony Shalhoub...
