This Dune article contains big spoilers.
Does Paul Atreides seem okay to you? He’s the unequivocal winner of Dune: Part Two. He gets revenge on the Harkonnens for killing his father, he takes over as Emperor, he marries Princess Irulan, and even gets cool superpowers from drinking the Water of Life.
So why is Paul so… angry? Readers of the book Dune don’t recall Paul being such a jerk at the end of the story, and the David Lynch version ended on an inspirational note. Is Denis Villeneuve taking liberties with the Frank Herbert novel again?
Yes… but also no.
Villeneuve has been very clear about his intention of working toward the second Herbert novel Dune Messiah. Already in Dune: Part Two, we can see Villeneuve set up the darker version of Paul that Herbert imagined in Dune Messiah, work he does by changing the two primary female characters,...

First must come the consumer warning. I read this digitally, which means flipping through the pages would have been more cumbersome than with a physical book, and I took the “152 pages” as an indication of the length of the story.
Reader, I was misled.
Only the End of the World Again is a 48-page story, bulked out by an sketchbook section exactly twice its size that shows the thumbnail layouts and un-lettered final inks for each page side-by-side, presumably for fans of art to take a magnifying glass to them and make various low appreciative noises in the back of their throats for the next several hours. I did not do so; that’s not how I read books.
If you do want to spend several hours with those earlier versions of the same story, though, this may well be a positive for you. It takes all kinds to make a world,...

You may have seen the piece in Variety that America’s leading fanboy with a late night talk show Stephen Colbert is joining the team that is adapting Roger Zelazny’s “The Chronicles of Amber” for television as an executive producer of the potential series under his Spartina production banner, joining with Skybound Entertainment and Vincent Newman Entertainment. “The Chronicles of Amber” follows the story of Corwin, a prince who awakens on Earth with no memory who soon discovers that he is a member of a royal family that has the ability to travel through different dimensions of reality and rules over the one true world, Amber.
The Variety article also notes: “The search is currently on for a writer to tackle the adaptation.” The story of Amber is complex and requires a writer who can navigate different worlds, characters, and timelines.
Stephen, bubullah, we have just the guy for you: John Ostrander.

Stephen Colbert is joining Robert Kirkman‘s Skybound Entertainment to adapt Roger Zelazny’s seminal fantasy novel The Chronicles of Amber into a series. Colbert will now serve as executive producer under his Spartina production banner alongside Skybound Entertainment and Vincent Newman Entertainment for the adaptation, which was initially announced in 2016. The Chronicles of Amber is widely known as an inspiration for author George R.R. Martin, who was friends with Zelazny until he died in 1995 and has advocated for an adaptation for some time. Martin recently stated on his blog: “I am a fantasy fan, and I want more fantasy on television… Most of all, I want Roger Zelazny’s Nine Princes in Amber. I will never understand why Corwin and his siblings are not starring in their own show. And hey, if epic fantasy continues to do well, maybe we will finally get that. A boy can dream.” Colbert responded,...

“George R.R. Martin and I have similar dreams,” Colbert said. “I’ve carried the story of Corwin in my head for over 40 years, and I’m thrilled to partner with Skybound and Vincent Newman to bring these worlds to life. All roads lead to Amber, and I’m happy to be walking them.”

One of George R.R. Martin’s favorite fantasy novels might finally get adapted into a TV series thanks to an unlikely ally — late-night host Stephen Colbert.
Colbert’s production company Spartina has joined Skybound Entertainment and Vincent Newman Entertainment’s existing partnership to develop Roger Zelazny’s beloved The Chronicles of Amber into a drama series.
Martin — who was a close friend of Zelazny, who died in 1995 — has many times noted in interviews stated the novels deserve to be adapted, most recently in October, writing on his blog, “I am a fantasy fan, and I want more fantasy on television… Most of all, I want Roger Zelazny’s Nine Princes in Amber. Stephen Colbert, a noted fantasy fan, has come on board to help develop and produce a series adaptation of Roger Zelazny’s The Chronicles of Amber.
Colbert, via his Spartina banner, will produce the adaptation alongside Robert Kirkman’s Skybound Entertainment.
It comes seven years after The Walking Dead creator Kirkman announced that he was developing a series based on the books with Vincent Newman Entertainment.

An end-of-the-year update from author and producer George R.R. Martin confirms that some of the shakeups at Warner Bros. Discovery have had ripple effects all the way in Westeros. “All the changes at HBO Max have impacted us, certainly,” he wrote on his Not A Blog blog.
What that means in precise terms for the myriad of shows Martin has in development with the top cable network, including a Jon Snow sequel, is a little unclear. But he did confirm that he’s been hard at work on the second season of “House of the Dragon.” For other projects, well, “some of those are moving faster than others,” he wrote but added this was always the case with development.
“None have been greenlit, though we are hoping … maybe soon. A couple have been shelved, but I would not agree that they are dead. You can take something off the shelf...

George R.R. Martin reflected on his literary and Hollywood career, and shared stories about book tour mishaps and Hollywood “morons,” in a conversation with “The Sandman” author Neil Gaiman at New York City’s Symphony Space Thursday night.
Martin was promoting his book “The Rise of the Dragon: An Illustrated History of the Targaryen Dynasty, Volume One,” a massive “deluxe reference book” about Westeros’ most powerful family. Attendees were given signed copies of either “Rise of the Dragon” or Martin’s 2018 book “Fire & Blood,” which serves as the source material for HBO’s “House of the Dragon.”
Since the contents of “Fire & Blood” extend far beyond what audiences have seen so far in “House of the Dragon,” Martin warned the audience with a smile: “If you don’t like spoilers, don’t read the whole book. Buy it, but don’t read it until the show is over.”

The new “Game of Thrones” prequel “House of the Dragon” has run fast through the events of its “Fire & Blood” source material, with the first season covering a span of 20 years in eight episodes. In a Monday post on his blog “Random Musings,” original series author George R.R. Martin revealed that he hopes the series will continue on this pace to cover the entire Targaryen civil war (or the Dance of Dragons) over four seasons.
“There are only so many minutes in an episode (more on HBO than on the network shows I once wrote for), and only so many episodes in a season … If ‘House of the Dragon’ had 13 episodes per season, maybe we could have shown all the things we had to ‘time jump’ over… though that would have risked having some viewers complain that the show was too ‘slow,’ that ‘nothing happened.’ As it is, I am...

George R.R. Martin sent a raven Wednesday with updates on his highly anticipated new projects on his blog.
The 73-year old fantasy author behind “Game of Thrones” (and creative contributor to the just-dropped “Elden Ring” video game) cast some light on the numerous “GoT” prequel series that are in the works. Perhaps more importantly to his O.G. fans, he confirmed that he is still plugging away at his long-delayed novel “The Winds of Winter,” the sixth of seven planned doorstopper books in the “A Song of Ice and Fire” series from which “Game of Thrones” and the entire Westeros mythos derives.
“Winds of Winter,” which was originally due to be published in 2016, is still coming, he says, but as a way of excusing himself for its absence, he wrote that Westeros is bigger than just one project now. But working in that world is his “number one priority,” he said.

“House of the Dragon,” the “Game of Thrones” prequel series currently in the works at HBO, has added Fabien Frankel to its cast.
“House of the Dragon” is set a few hundred years prior to the events of “Game of Thrones” and tells the story of House Targaryen and the Targaryen civil war that became known as the “Dance of the Dragons.”
Frankel will appear Ser Criston Cole, of Dornish descent, the common-born son of the steward to the Lord of Blackhaven. Cole has no claim to land or titles; all he has to his name is his honor and his preternatural skill with a sword.

Paramount has set “Star Trek: Discovery” writer and consulting producer Kalinda Vazquez to write a new untitled “Star Trek” movie, according to an individual with knowledge of the project.
J.J. Abrams will produce the project via his Bad Robot banner.
The blind deal is for an original movie that Vazquez pitched, though details about the project are being kept under wraps. Of note, Vazquez got her birth name from the original “Star Trek” television show — she was named after the character Kelinda from the 1968 Season 2 episode “By Any Other Name.”
The untitled Vazquez project comes after Paramount pumped the brakes on Noah Hawley’s “Star Trek” movie last August, as well as another project that was being hatched by Quentin Tarantino.

As far as sci-fi films go, there is before Star Wars and after; the film forever altered the landscape and the box office with an old fashioned sense of adventure long relegated to Hollywood’s past. But what about during Star Wars? After all, Twentieth Century Fox was pushing their bet towards another property for prosperity: the post-apocalyptic Damnation Alley, an adaptation of the hit 1969 novel by Roger Zelazny. We all know which brought in the Fox funds, and it certainly wasn’t this goofy Stagecoach tribute (as opposed to Sw’s The Hidden Fortress one). But as The Little Fox That Didn’t, Damnation Alley was this kid’s sci-fi horror boogie; seven and alone, just me and The Landmaster military Rv that costars.
There’s no need to call child services; growing up in a small town, I saw many a film solo - that darkened screen was my closest friend.

Legendary cartoonist Gahan Wilson found an antidote for whimsical comic strips in a career that spanned half a century.
Influential cartoonist Gahan Wilson, who's worked darkened Colliers, Playboy, National Lampoon and The New Yorker, died of complications of dementia on Nov. 21 in Scottsdale, Arizona, according to the Associated Press. He was 89.
“The world has lost a legend," his stepson Paul Wilson posted on the artist's Facebook page. "One of the very best cartoonists to ever pick up a pen and paper has passed on. He went peacefully – surrounded by those who loved him. Gahan Wilson leaves behind a large body of work that is finely drawn, elegant, and provocative. He was preceded in death by his wife, author Nancy Winters Wilson, and his parents, Allen and Marion Wilson."

Exclusive: MGM will mount Yasuke, an action film that is based on the true story of history’s only recorded African samurai in feudal Japan. Stuart C. Paul has written the script and Whalerock Industries’ Lloyd Braun and Andrew Mittman are producing. The latter has joined the exec ranks at MGM and will steer the project.
A native of Portuguese Mozambique, Yasuke was taken captive and brought to 16th-century Japan as a slave to Jesuit missionaries. The first black man to set foot on Japanese soil, Yasuke’s arrival arouses the interest of Oda Nobunaga, a ruthless warlord seeking to unite the fractured country under his banner. The script focuses on the complex relationship between the two men as Yasuke earns Nobunaga’s friendship, respect — and ultimately, the honor, swords and title of samurai.

Our latest round-up of genre DVDs and Blu-rays covers George A Romero, Damnation Alley and more...
With real life’s ridiculous news stories almost beyond parody, it seems fitting that 2017 was the year we saw George A. Romero, the master of satirical zombie tomfoolery, responsible for horror classics from Dawn Of The Dead through to Tales From The Dark Side, shuffle off this mortal coil. To commemorate three of Romero’s less celebrated early movies, Arrow Video has released the intriguing Between Night And Dawn set on Bluray, with ample extras to sate the most eager fanboy/girl.
First up, and by far the movie most will know (perhaps due to its 2010 remake), 1973's The Crazies plays out almost like a retread of Romero's 1968 debut Night Of The Living Dead, with a group of townsfolk again subject to a dodgy violence-inducing substance whilst military jackanapes try and control the epidemic.

There, on the mountain and the sky,
On all the tragic scene they stare.
One asks for mournful melodies;
Accomplished fingers begin to play.
Their eyes mid many wrinkles, their eyes,
Their ancient, glittering eyes, are gay.
— William Butler Yeats • Lapis Lazuli
Here we are, having our last visit before the big hokey pokey on the Potomac and I am being reminded of post-apocalyptic fiction. If you can’t guess why I’m suffering this brain scratch, maybe you can be excused.
Now, for those of you still with me, hey gang – let’s talk end of the world!
Time was when apocalypses were rare, if not nonexistent, on theater screens and – I’m taking a flyer here – utterly absent from video. Today, though, IMDb’s entry lists 50 films that qualify as post-apocalyptic and surely there are more on the way. Why the deluge?

You may be familiar with George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series which led to HBO's Game of Thrones but for even longer he’s been involved with a science fiction and superhero fantasy anthology called Wild Cards. And he's just announced it's coming to a television near you. Back in 2011 Wild Cards was optioned for a movie by Syfy Films and Universal Pictures. That didn't quite pan out but Martin himself announced the latest news on his LiveJournal which still has Universal involved: Universal Cable Productions (Ucp) has acquired the rights to adapt our long-running Wild Cards series of anthologies and mosaic novels for television. Development will begin immediately on what we hope will be the first of several interlocking series. Melinda M. Snodgrass, my assistant editor and right-hand man on Wild Cards since its inception, the creator of Dr. Tachyon, Double Helix, and Franny Black,...

Years before Game of Thrones, George R.R. Martin wrote five episodes for the '80s revival of The Twilight Zone.
Entering the Twilight Zone
If you're a fan of fantasy fiction or simply enjoy a good violent drama, George R. R. Martin is probably a name you know. Since at least 1996, with the release of A Game of Thrones, the first book in his A Song of Ice and Fire series, Martin has been crushing all of your hopes and dreams with his pen, which I imagine drips a sanguineous ink. But before he (along with Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss) busied himself with ruining your Sunday nights, Martin brought his disturbing creations to the 1985 revival of The Twilight Zone.
Unlike its predecessor, the '80s version of The Twilight Zone didn't quite carve out its own special place in American pop culture,...

Don Coscarelli’s Phantasm was released almost 37 years ago and, for almost as long, genre fans have suffered with the subpar treatment of this cult classic in terms of the film’s appearance and inadequate sound mix. Thankfully, that is no longer the case due to J. J. Abrams and the awesome folks at Bad Robot taking on the 4K restoration of Phantasm as a passion project, and the results are beyond stunning. The film has never looked or sounded better than it does in this iteration and, for those of us who have fondly followed the series, it’s a beautiful tribute to both the fans and the work of those involved with Phantasm, including the late, great Angus Scrimm.
Considering the climate of the genre when it was released in the late ’70s, Phantasm has always stood out to me as one of the more uniquely terrifying horror...

The year that gave us Gremlins, Ghostbusters and The Temple Of Doom also gave us these 20 underappreciated movies...
It's been said that 1984 was a vintage year for movies, and looking back, it's easy to see why. The likes of Ghostbusters and Gremlins served up comedy, action and the macabre in equal measure. James Cameron's The Terminator cemented Arnold Schwarzenegger's star status and gave us one of the greatest sci-fi action movies of the decade.
This was also the year where the Coen brothers made their screen debut with the stunning thriller Blood Simple, and when the Zucker brothers followed up Airplane! with the equally hilarious Top Secret! And we still haven't even mentioned Beverly Hills Cop, This Is Spinal Tap, The Karate Kid, Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom and the unexpectedly successful romantic comedy, Splash. Then there was Milos Forman's sumptuous period drama Amadeus, which...

Night of Knives by Ian Cameron Esslemont Review
Huge fan of the everything Malazan. I am of the opinion that Steven Erikson’s Malazan Book of the Fallen is the single finest fantasy series this or any other world has ever seen, surpassing my past and still very much loved favorites by George R. R. Martin, Roger Zelazny, Tolkien, and Patricia McKillip (because her Riddle of the Stars mesmerized me as a child.)
Later, fans of Erikson’s series would get chapters and tales from Ian Cameron Esslemont, Erikson’s co-creator of the setting. I think it’s fair to say these efforts were met with mixed reactions. The first of Esslemont’s entries was Night of Knives, which no doubt is meant to echo our own history’s Night of the Long Knives, and details the literal ascension of Kellanved and Dancer.

Looking for a good book recommendation? Our writers have a few unsung sci-fi, fantasy and horror gems up their sleeves...
Other people. What’s the point of them? They’re noisy and everywhere.
There is one thing they’re especially good at, however, and that’s recommending new stuff. In the spirit of that, we asked our writers to recommend great books that, for whatever reason, haven’t been surrounded by as much fuss and recognition as they deserve.
Nominations came in for personal favourites in fiction, non-fiction, children’s books and graphic novels, so we’ve divided them up into a series of features, the first of which is below, on great unsung sci-fi, fantasy, horror and thriller adult fiction.
Our hope is that you’ll demonstrate your worth as other people by carrying on the recommendations in the comments section below. Thanks in advance.

Emilia Clarke has been heating up watercooler talk for five years now HBO’s monster hit adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire book series, Game of Thrones. Even as a veteran multiple re-reader of all of the books in the series that jumped on the lit before the turn of the century, I never thought that I’d see the day that “Khaleesi” would enter pop culture vernacular, a thought that died when I bought my 8 year old niece, who knows the series better than you, an “I’m not a Princess I’m a Khaleesi t-shirt). Move over Arthur C., Emilia is the Clarke of both speculative and reality affections.
I was introduced to the series hiding in a public library by my house, waiting for my mom to go to work, so my parents wouldn’t know I had been suspended (this...

In previous novels Matthew Stover has shown us a star ascending, in his prime and during a fall. A god killer, creator, and husband of one — he is the unlikely pawn that is the habitual line stepper and reaches points to crown himself, but instead of turning around he jumps off. Through this, one would think we know the make-up of Caine, the complex extremity of his simplicity, and that perhaps all his stories left to be told are in the future and beyond. Caine Black Knife is a treat as we are proven wrong, we have seen the extent of the will — of the star — that acts to both humanize the character while also being what makes Caine almost super-human but we haven’t seen its origin or more importantly, its utter acceptance. Stover gives us two overlapping stories; one that goes further down the road we’ve walked...

I remember reading a book, the first book I’d ever review online, called Meditations on Middle on Earth, which was collection of essays from the who’s who cast of fantasy authors reflecting on The Lord of the Rings. When they read it, where they were, how it influenced them. Among them was Robin Hobb, who’d I also later interview, and she posed a question in her essay that was something to the effect of the thought of why even try (to write) something that has already been done at that level? I find myself, from the fan’s perspective, in a similar place. As a life long fan of epic fantasy, this guy, one Steven Erikson… he’s done it.
When I finished reading Steven Erikson’s The Crippled God I was hit with asoiafitis, that truly magical yearning of just having to go talk about what you just experienced.

They grow up so fast.
I’ve worked on/created a number of characters in my writing career, trying to define them through my writing. They exist first in my head and then become incarnated through my words and stories and the depictions by the artists. In some ways, they are like my kids – my murderous, nasty kids.
In the movie Stranger Than Fiction (one of my Mary’s fave films and the most atypical Will Farrell movie ever), the writer of a novel finds that her lead character – who she was planning to kill off – is a real person and comes face to face with him. I don’t think I’d ever want to do that for the main reason that I tend to make the lives of my protagonists pretty miserable. If I’m their creator, I’m a pretty asshole god. I have very good reasons...

Jim Lee has put two pieces of Jack Kirby's Argo artwork up for auction.
The DC Comics co-publisher intends to raise money to put his children through college by selling the historic art.
The artwork was commissioned from comics legend Kirby as designs for the set for a movie based on Roger Zelazny's sci-fi classic novel Lord of Light, which would have been used as a theme park after filming was complete.
The film never got off the ground, but the script was reappropriated as part of the plot to smuggle Us citizens out of Iran during the 1979 hostage crisis - around which the events of Ben Affleck's Argo were based.
Lee was not aware of the significance of the pieces when he bought them from Lord of Light producer Barry Gellar.

Mike Davis is the publisher and editor of the online magazine, Lovecraft eZine. In a short time, Lovecraft eZine has become so popular that it caught the attention and approval of S.T. I thought, well, I guess I'll do it then. I knew right away, though, that I didn't want Lovecraft eZine to just be a "fan zine". My goal...

Argo’s Oscar triumph will certainly enhance the careers of all those involved, none more so than its producer, director, and star, Ben Affleck. But it could also boost another filmmaker who has absolutely nothing to do with Argo, except a desire to bring to screen a part of the story that the acclaimed historical drama left out.
EW.com first told you about Science Fiction Land last fall, when its director, Judd Ehrlich, was seeking Kickstarter support to raise $50,000 to finish the project. (Mission: Accomplished.) To briefly recap here: Argo was based on the true-life tale of CIA agent...

It's brilliantly tense and exciting, but despite a lot of authentic touches this film doesn't hold true to the real events of 1979

Argo (2012)
Director: Ben Affleck

History grade: C
On 4 November 1979, Iranian revolutionaries occupied the Us embassy in Tehran and took more than 50 hostages. Six diplomats escaped. Canadian officials and the CIA launched a secret joint operation to get them out.
Politics
In 1953, the CIA and MI6 engineered a coup to overthrow Mohammad Mosaddegh, the democratically elected president of Iran, and replace him with a military-backed absolute monarchy. By 1979, opposition to the shah hardened into revolutionary fervour and democrats found themselves, fatefully, on the same side as Islamic fundamentalism. Argo presents this context imaginatively, though fleetingly and perhaps too vaguely. The sequence in which revolutionaries storm the Us embassy is brilliantly realised,...

Renewed interest in 'lost' sci-fi movie Lord of Light, the best worst films, and an update on the Florida Versailles
Argo for that
Hoping to continue its good awards form at the Baftas tonight is Argo. Ben Affleck's film is also back in cinemas, mopping up anyone who may have missed it first time around. Also increasingly hopeful with every new victory is Barry Ira Geller, the original author of the sci-fi screenplay within the film of Argo. Affleck's film is, of course, based on the true story of the CIA posing as a film crew, and Geller's 1979 screenplay, which the CIA subsequently acquired, was originally supposed to be made into a movie called "Lord of Light", based on a 1967 novel by Roger Zelazny. To date the film remains unmade. Ownership appears a bit of a mess, as the CIA bought the script to use as cover for its hostage rescue,...

Ben Affleck's "Argo" has been universally acclaimed as a great political thriller based on true events, but two-time Emmy-nominated director Judd Ehrlich ("Run for Your Life," "Magic Camp") wants more for the story behind "Argo" than a film that takes significant dramatic liberties to simplify its plot. Ehrlich wants the truth, and he's spent the last seven years constructing a documentary to reveal just that. Enter "Science Fiction Land," Ehrlich's documentary that tells the true tale of Barry Ira Geller, a young inventor who optioned the rights to Roger Zelazny's award winning novel "Lord of Light." After writing a screenplay for the movie, he assembled a team suitable to tackle his passion project: "King of Comics" Jack Kirby; Hollywood makeup and special effects experts John Chambers and Maurice Stein; world-renowned architect Paolo Soleri, visionary author Ray Bradbury, and legendary...

Anyone who’s seen the trailers for Ben Affleck’s new thriller, Argo, knows that it’s about a real life mission wherein the C.I.A. created a fake science fiction film as a cover for sneaking operatives into Iran and sneaking American hostages out. What not many people know, and what our own Christopher Campbell has brought to our attention over at the Documentary Channel blog, is that the fake movie from Affleck’s film wasn’t fake at all. As a matter of fact, it was, at one time, going to be a pretty big production, and the story of how it fell apart might be just as interesting as the story of how it was used as a tool for the C.I.A. Despite the fact that U.S. Intelligence officer Tony Mendez eventually presented the government of Iran with a science fiction film called Argo, the...
