Beau Willimon, the playwright and showrunner who launched Netflix’s “House of Cards,” is running unopposed for re-election to a two-year term as president of the Writers Guild of America East.
Willimon also ran unopposed in 2017 to succeed Michael Winship. The WGA East announced a total of 24 candidates Thursday for its top officer posts and Council seats. Results will be announced Sept. 20.
The announcement comes with the WGA locked in a heated standoff with Hollywood agents over the issues of how agents represent WGA members. The guild required on April 13 that members fire their agents if the agents had not signed a Code of Conduct, which bans agents from taking packaging fees and prohibits agencies from owning production affiliates.

Coming of age is tough enough. Coming of age while simultaneously trying to balance multiple hot plates on your arm? That takes talent.
“The three-plate carry was the hardest thing for me,” says star Ella Purnell (Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children), who plays protagonist Tess in Starz’s series adaptation of Stephanie Danler’s 2016 novel Sweetbitter. Taran Killam‘s relationship comedy Mating won’t be going the distance at Showtime.
The cabler has opted not to move forward with the Jason Katims-produced project, which found the Saturday Night Live alum playing a young divorcé who found himself completely unprepared for the brave new, frank and fluid world of dating and hooking up. The pilot was written by Stu Zicherman (The American, The Affair).
Mating was designed as an anthology series, with each season focusing on a different protagonist’s journey through modern dating and relationships.

Showtime is looking to partner with Stephen Colbert to give election night viewers an alternative to news coverage.
The network is in talks to air a live election special hosted by the host from sister CBS’ “The Late Show.”
“Stephen wants to do it, I want to do it, the studio wants to do it,” Showtime president David Nevins told reporters Thursday at the Television Critics Association press tour. “It will be Colbert unfettered. He’s promised to say a few curse words, which is important. It’s something I’ve been trying to get him to do for a while. I think it will be great.”

There’s a happy ending to the recent news that long-running “SNL” regulars Taran Killam and Jay Pharoah had been dropped from the cast of the sketch comedy show. Both performers, it was announced today, have been cast as the leads in Showtime comedy pilots.
Killam will star in the “comedy anthology” “Mating,” executive produced by Jason Katims and written and executive produced by Stu Zicherman. Per the Showtime release, the project will be “an annual anthology,” with Killam playing “a recently divorced guy who married young and now finds himself completely unprepared for the brave new, frank and fluid world of dating and hooking up.”
This is not a longtime gig, though, as future seasons of “Mating” will focus on a different protagonist. What sounds more ongoing, though, is “White Famous,” executive produced by Jamie Foxx (who will guest star in the pilot) and “Californication’s” Tom Kapinos. Tim Story will direct the pilot.

The Writers Guild of America has just announced the nominations for their annual awards for Best Screenplays (by writers who are guild signatories). That’s right, before you get nervous thinking that your favorite may have been left off the list, you must remember that the WGA is the group that is not all-inclusive and leaves out several of the top contenders each year due to them not being part of the guild or not following their very specific rules. For this reason, you won’t see Inside Out, The Hateful Eight, and Ex Machina in the Original Screenplay category or Room, Brooklyn, or Anomalisa in the Adapted screenplay category.
Taking a look at what’s left over for the nominations, we find many that were expected to make a showing, including Spotlight and Bridge of Spies for Original Screenplay, though they apparently had to sink to really low depths...

Directed by Delicatessen's Jean-Pierre Jeunet and written by The Americans' Stu Zicherman, new Amazon pilot Casanova is worth a watch...
One of two dramatic pilots to land on Amazon Prime recently, Casanova stars Diego Luna as the eponymous Venetian, recently escaped from imprisonment in the Doge’s palace and on the run to Paris, determined to right his ways and prove himself to be more than his debaucheries. All, however, does not go to plan. He immediately falls into the political game of the French court, finding himself caught between the ongoing machinations of Madame Pompadour (Bojana Novokovic) and his old friend, de Bernis (Ben Daniels).
When you think of Giacomo Casanova, sex is probably the first thing that comes to mind. His infamous debaucheries and reputation for seduction have formed the basis for various adaptations, including the rambunctious BBC version with David Tennant in the title role.

Amazon Studios has set the release dates for two of its original series’ pilots. The debut episodes of Sneaky Pete and Casanova will drop on the Instant Video streaming platform on August 7, 2015.
On that date, both the Sneaky Pete and Casanova pilots will be available to all Amazon Prime Instant Video subscribers in the U.S., UK, and Germany. Soon afterwards, the pilots will be joined by others in Amazon’s recent round of its pilot program. Prime users will then be able to vote on their favorite pilots, which Amazon will greenlight as full series orders.
Sneaky Pete, which Amazon was reportedly courting back in June 2015, comes from executive producers Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) and David Shore (House M.D.). The Amazon original series’ story centers around a released-from-prison conman, played by Giovanni Ribisi, who takes his old cellmate Pete’s identity and gets sucked into his family’s bail bond business.
