When Cinema East began during the Summer of 2010, Austin truly became the city of my dreams. Life does not get much better than spending hot summer nights, outside on a picnic blanket, with some adult beverages, watching some of my favorite films of the festival circuit with an audience of 300 - 600 cinephiles, hipsters and everyone in between. I could do without the humidity and the mosquitoes, but otherwise Cinema East is as close to heaven as I will probably ever get. Gates open at 7 pm, with DJ sets from Samantha Garrett and Mike Z of Deep Cuts keeping the eardrums of the masses occupied until the films begin (approximately 9 pm). The Austin Audio Co-op will be debuting their new 24'x13.5' screen as the official providers of sound and projection for the 2013 season. Oh, and for all of the movie-loving pups out there, Cinema East is a very dog-friendly environment...

Meet the most dangerous man in America. Way before the Yes Men, Alan Abel was duping the media with all kinds of outrageous hoaxes. From trying to clothe animals to running a school for beggars to protesting against breast feeding, nobody, but nobody, could pull the wool over the public’s eyes like Abel. And, entering into his sunset years — he’s still at it! Calling radio stations, writing fake editorials, handing out outrageous flyers, Alan Abel couldn’t stop pulling hoaxes if he tried. His life and wacko career is intimately profiled in the documentary Abel Raises Cain by someone who knows his tricks and scams all too well: His daughter Jenny Abel.
This is a very loving documentary. Jenny is obviously very close to her father and her mother, so the documentary doesn’t really explore any negative aspects to Abel’s stunts, if there are any. Although...

Vimeo has consistently been the video sharing site of choice for filmmakers, with their high-quality uploads and file-size permissions that have allowed filmmakers to upload complete, longer-length films without the irritating time-limit restrictions of YouTube.
Now, as of last week, Vimeo has upgraded their Vimeo Plus user accounts to allow filmmakers to upload full 5Gb videos in one shot. That means that Plus users can now upload a full 2.5 hour long feature film in quality HD to the site. As of this writing, this file-size increase is in Beta mode, meaning that not all the kinks may have been worked out yet. A Vimeo Plus membership costs either $9.95 per month or $59.95 per year.
Prior to this change, several filmmakers have already taken advantage of Vimeo’s higher upload limits without time restraints to put their longer films online. On Bad Lit, we tend to consider films over 47 minutes or so...

Before Google, there was Factsheet 5.
Factsheet 5 was a magazine published in the ’80s and ’90s that listed about a gazillion hand-produced, personal ‘zines in every issue. It came out a couple times a year and, if you were interested in zines, it was like discovering the Holy Grail each and every time.
You’d pour through each issue, highlight a couple zines that sounded cool, send off a couple of bucks to each publisher, then wait a few weeks for the goodies to arrive in your mailbox. That might sound like a long, irritating process in these Internet instant opinion days, but it was quite fun and it was one of the only ways at the time to commune with people who had similar interests as yours all over the country.

Flamethrower Magazine conducted an impressive and extensive interview with underground film raconteur Mike Z about his hoax filmmaking career and his Charles Manson inspired stage show, The Strip Cult, which may become a major musical. The Chicago Underground Film Festival is this week and Hollywood Chicago passionately recommended seeing the opening night film, The Wild Hunt. Chicago Journal ran an overview of the fest. Chicago Tribune’s Michael Phillips — whom I thoroughly enjoy on At the Movies — wrote a brief preview focusing on Jonas Mekas. Newcity Film liked the Chicago-produced documentary Scrappers. True/Slant also raved about Scrappers. Also in Chicago, the Reader named The Nightingale as the 2010 Best Alternative Film Venue in the city. On Cinema Scope, Michael Sicinski profiles and interviews British experimental filmmaker Ben Rivers, which prompts Making Light of It to offer its own assessment of Rivers’ work. Blake Williams looks at the evolution of the long,...

Bad Lit’s second ever Movie of the Year is at last available to view online, so audiences worldwide can now get to see what all the fuss was about. It’s the documentary Wanted New Talent! Sit back and let Walt bring you back to those golden years when music really meant something.
So, why did I choose this as my Movie of the Year? What I love about it is the film’s minimalism. Really, it’s just one guy plopped down in front of a camera and allowed to just ramble on seemingly unfiltered — and be completely engaging for the entire hour. There probably aren’t many people...

Film: Military Takeover of NYC
Director: Mike Z
Year: 1999
Remember the panic of Y2K? When it was thought that reality might implode upon itself because the internet couldn’t compute 00? Or, some kind of nonsense like that.
Well, it was, strangely enough, a very real fear at the time, so smarter con men at the time took full advantage of the populace’s gullibility. This was especially true for cinema’s greatest con man, Mike Z, master of the “hoax” film.
In late 1999, Z anonymously produced and directed an untitled video that purported to be an actual military official walking around Times Square and describing the official government plan to start a race riot on New Year’s Eve that would force the full military occupation of all of Manhattan.
