The films in contention for the 2024 Best Costume Design Oscar are “Barbie,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Napoleon,” “Oppenheimer,” and “Poor Things.” Our current odds posit “Barbie” (10/3) as the frontrunner, followed in order by “Poor Things” (7/2), “Killers of the Flower Moon” (9/2), “Oppenheimer” (9/2), and “Napoleon” (9/2).
Since she was previously feted for “Anna Karenina” (2013) and “Little Women” (2020), Jacqueline Durran’s ninth career nomination for “Barbie” could make her the dozenth costumer with three or more wins. As is the case this time, her 2020 bid resulted from a collaboration with director Greta Gerwig, while her 2013 one was her third of five for a Joe Wright film, after “Pride & Prejudice” (2006) and “Atonement” (2008) and before “Darkest Hour” (2018) and “Cyrano” (2022). Her remaining two bids came for “Mr. Turner” (2015) and “Beauty and the Beast” (2018).

Scarlett Johansson had to get used to wearing her Black Widow costume, especially in the 2012 Marvel film The Avengers. Johansson confided she experienced the most frustrations with her superhero outfit in the team-up flick.
Why Scarlett Johansson felt like a ‘discount Widow’ in ‘The Avengers’ Scarlett Johansson | Taylor Hill/FilmMagic
Johansson’s Black Widow costume was initially a fashion choice she had to get accustomed to. She’d done research on her character beforehand, so the actor wasn’t completely blindsided by her new superhero wardrobe. But even all of her research didn’t completely prepare Johansson for what she was about to wear.
“I knew it was going to be some kind of sexy unitard, because I had researched the character in the comics,” Johansson once told Sci-Fi Movie Page. “I’ve never worn anything like it before, so I had a freak-out moment that lasted about half a day,...

It’s a question even the most fastidious awards watcher might have trouble answering off the top of their head: Who won the Oscars last year? While Best Picture winners are often impossible to forget, keeping track of who took home Academy Awards in the below-the-line categories often requires a little more work. Here’s who won at the ceremony last year — and a preview of the 2023 Oscars as well.
Who won the Oscars last year?
The 94th Oscars took place on March 27, 2022, a relative return to normal after the 2021 ceremony was directly impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. While the list of 2022 Oscar winners (seen below) represents the academy’s take on the best of 2021 in film, the ceremony won’t be remembered for those who took home Academy Awards. Instead, it will live in infamy as the show when Will Smith, who won Best Actor for “King Richard,” went...

The 2023 Oscars hit almost all the right notes, with Jimmy Kimmel doing a terrific job of hosting, starting with a monologue that acknowledged last year’s slap heard around the world. Kimmel used his opening bit to point out there are 16 first-time acting nominees, including two from Encino Man – Brendan Fraser and Ke Huy Quan.
Kimmel poked fun at Babylon for being a bust at the box office and noted Batgirl is the first superhero to be defeated by an accounting department. He also confirmed James Cameron declined his invitation, joking that you know a show is too long when even Cameron can’t sit through it.
“Some of the critics are saying Jim Cameron isn’t here because he didn’t get a ‘Best Director’ nomination. And, well, I find that very hard to believe about a man of such deep humility. He does have a point. I mean,...

Los Angeles, March 13 (Ians) Ruth E. Carter is the first Black woman to win two Oscars. In 2019, she became the first Black person to win the Oscar for costume design for her work on Marvel’s ‘Black Panther’. At the 95th Academy Awards, she was once again recognised for the film’s sequel, ‘Wakanda Forever’, reports ‘Variety’.
Carter, according to ‘Variety’, beat out Catherine Martin, who won the BAFTA and Costume Designers Guild awards for her work on Baz Luhrmann’s ‘Elvis’.
She also beat Mary Zophres for ‘Babylon’, Jenny Beaven for ‘Mrs Harris Goes to Paris’ and Shirley Kurata for ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’, which was the surprise winner of the Sci-Fi Fantasy award at the Cdga.
Denzel Washington made history in 2002 when he won his second Oscar for ‘Training Day’. He first won in 1990 for ‘Glory’. Mahershala Ali is the only other Black actor with two Oscars,...

Carter has again made Academy Award history with her victory Sunday night in Best Costume Design for Ryan Coogler’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” Carter became the first Black woman to ever repeat in an Oscar category, winning her first in 2019 for “Black Panther” and the first Black woman to win two Oscars, period.

Ruth E. Carter has become the first Black woman to win two Oscars.
Carter, who in 2019 became the first Black person to win the Oscar for costume design for her work on Marvel’s “Black Panther,” was recognized for the film’s sequel, “Wakanda Forever.” In her speech, she thanked director Ryan Coogler and asked late “Black Panther” star Chadwick Boseman to look after her own mother, who recently died at 101.
“Nice to see you again,” Carter said as she took the stage. “Thank you to the Academy for recognizing the superhero that is a Black woman. She endure, she loves, she overcomes, she is every woman in this film. She is my mother. This past week, Mable Carter became an ancestor. This film prepared me for this moment. Chadwick, please take care of Mom. Ryan Coogler, Nate Moore, thank you both for your vision. Together, we are reshaping how culture is represented.

It turned out that “Everything Everywhere All at Once” was pretty much everything to every Oscar voter. Of its 11 nominations, it won seven, including the big one: Best Picture. The last Best Picture winner to win that many statuettes was “Gravity” in 2014.
“Eeaao” started off strong when Ke Huy Quan won Best Supporting Actor. Then Jamie Lee Curtis nabbed Best Supporting Actress and, later in the evening, the Daniels took home Best Original Screenplay. By the time it won Film Editing, the seemingly unstoppable breakout hit‘s momentum was undeniable. It then went on to triumph in Best Director, Best Actress and finally, Best Picture.
Much of the evening went according to Steve Pond‘s predictions in his final analysis of the race. “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” won Best Animated Feature, the first award of the night, and “Navalny” won Best Documentary. During his acceptance speech, “Navalny” director Daniel Roher...

Jenny Beavan’s nomination for “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris” is her 12th and could result in her fourth win, as she previously bagged trophies for “A Room with a View” (1987), “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2016), and “Cruella” (2022). She would be only the fifth costumer to achieve as many victories, after Edith Head, Irene Sharaff, Milena Canonero, and Colleen Atwood. The Best Costume Design category at the Oscars is often fairly cut-and-dried, with period costumes always having an advantage over others. This has also frequently been a category where there isn’t as much direct connection to the films nominated for Best Picture; last year’s “Cruella” and other winners like “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” only had two nominations and won for their costumes. This year three of the nominees are period films, and three are nominated for Best Picture. Only one of this year’s nominees is a first-timer.
The Costume Designers Guild handed out their awards last week, with “Elvis” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” winning their respective races for Period and Sci-Fi/Fantasy, although all five Oscar nominees were represented across those two categories.

Gofer and quick-witted fixer Manny Torres (Diego Calva) effortlessly determines how to haul an overstuffed elephant up a steep hill to a Bel Air party, sneak a dead body out of said packed bacchanal and satisfy his producer boss’ black-tie dress code with minimal financial means.
“It’s actually not even a tuxedo. It’s cobbled together,” says Babylon costume designer Mary Zophres, who received her fourth Oscar nomination for her work on the sprawling ode to Hollywood. It’s her second nom for collaborating with director Damien Chazelle, after 2016’s La La Land.
Zophres imagined Manny taking precious care of his only white, but now-yellowed, dress shirt, modeled after an original late-1920s button-down with gathers on the sleeves and shoulder yoke. “He hand-washes it. He line-dries it, and he has a way to press it,” she says.
Manny likely resourcefully borrowed the mismatched jacket and bow tie from the producer’s suited henchmen.

Damien Chazelle’s “Babylon” is an epic film about Hollywood’s transition from the silent film era to talkies that required more than 7,000 costumes, featured 200 speaking parts, and necessitated months of research and design work. The glamorous costume arc of silent film ingenue turned talkie-era flameout Nellie Laroy (Margot Robbie) offers a cautionary tale, like Damien Chazelle’s movie itself. “Elvis” got a big boost in its Oscar bid for Best Costume Design with a win for period pictures at the Costume Designers Guild Awards on Feb. 27. It prevailed over two of its Oscar rivals, “Babylon” and “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris,” plus “Don’t Worry Darling” and “The Woman King.”
In a sign of its strength, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” pulled off an upset in the fantasy/sci-fi race over “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” Those films round out the Oscar race for Best Costume Design. The other CDG winner was the contemporary film “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.”
In its 24-year history, the CDG has previewed only 12 of the Oscar winners for Best Costume Design: nine of these have been period pictures and three have been sci-fi or fantasy flicks. Of the last five Costume Designers Guild Awards winners three have gone on to repeat at the Academy...

Is the Oscar cinematography category making progress when it comes to recognizing female DPs?
This year, Mandy Walker became only the third woman ever nominated for cinematography for her work on “Elvis.” Rachel Morrison (“Mudbound”) made history as the first female Dp to land a nom and that was in 2018, while Ari Wegner was nominated last year for “The Power of the Dog.”
Walker’s up against James Friend (“All Quiet on the Western Front”), Darius Khondji, Roger Deakins (“Empire of Light”) and Florian Hoffmeister (“Tár”), in a very competitive race.
While the cinematographers’ branch has a notoriously poor track record in honoring diverse artists — no Black Dp has ever won the category and only two have been nominated — Walker might have an edge.
Her work on “Elvis” earned her the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts gong for cinematography — the first woman to take home this prize ever.

"Babylon" is Damien Chazelle's most ambitious and provocative film of his career so far. Set in the 1920s during the transition from silent film to talkies in the film industry, his fourth feature film exists as the antithesis of the joyful and sun-soaked Los Angeles that Chazelle portrayed in "La La Land." The world of "Babylon" is instead characterized by excess — the opening scene evokes the likes of "Boogie Nights," or Martin Scorsese's "The Wolf of Wall Street," showing the audience an epic, lavish, and debaucherous party ruled by the Hollywood elite.
Even though his latest film is darker than Chazelle's previous efforts, it also maintains a unique sense of humor that breaks up the moments of shock and spectacle. One extended sequence follows a frustrated cast and crew trying to get the semantics of filming a talkie scene just right. Sometimes the humor is much more subtle.

All Quiet on the Western Front made good on its record number of BAFTA nominations with a major haul of wins at the film awards ceremony on Sunday night.
At London’s Royal Festival Hall, Netflix’s German anti-war epic took the BAFTAs for best film, alongside best adapted screenplay and best director, and hoovered up most of the craft honors for a total of seven gongs (a BAFTA record for a film not in the English language).
Away from the Western Front, Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin won four awards, including half the performance honors, with Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan landing supporting wins. Elsewhere, Austin Butler won leading actor for Elvis, and Cate Blanchett leading actress for Tar.
As had largely been expected, Richard E. Grant was a delightfully upbeat and uncontroversial host, with no political jokes or any jibes aimed at the guests (although he did reference Will Smith,...

Writer-director Damien Chazelle’s “Babylon” is the sort of maximalist movie where every frame teems with excess, so it’s only fitting that its costumes be outrageous in both their number and designs. Between the cast of over a hundred speaking roles and the abundance of extras, costume designer Mary Zophres estimates that she and her department created around 7,000 costumes, which is even more impressive when one considers the meticulous detail that went into every piece of clothing. Nowhere did this approach pay more dividends — both in glamour and character development — than with Jean Smart’s brutally honest gossip columnist Elinor St. John. A close look at her costumes reveals the thought and care that, when multiplied by hundreds of cast members, made “Babylon” the most sartorially spectacular film of 2022 and Zophres an Oscar nominee for best costume design.

Fun fact: The last time a Best Picture Oscar winner also scored a craft victory was Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water,” which took home awards for Paul Austerberry’s production design and Alexandre Desplat’s score in 2018. Which means that Best Picture winners “Coda” (no craft nominations) “Nomadland”, “Parasite”, and “Green Book” (editing) all left empty-handed as far as craft wins.
But look for the five-year craft drought to end if frontrunner “Everything Everywhere All at Once” wins Best Picture. As part of its Oscar-leading 11 nominations, it captured craft nods for costume design, editing, score, and song. It certainly has momentum on its side as the populist favorite. In addition to Best Picture, it’s a serious above-the-line contender for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay (the Daniels), Best Actress (Michelle Yeoh), Best Supporting Actress (Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu), and Best Supporting Actor (Ke Huy Quan...

If you want to win an Oscar for Best Costume Design, it’s best to pick a project for which you can create frilly dresses from a bygone era. Since its introduction at the 1948 Academy Awards, this category has favored period pictures, including the 2021 winner “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Voters love to reward the creative forces behind such films, especially those that are about the aristocracy including recent champs “Marie Antoinette” (2007), “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” (2008), “The Duchess” (2009), “The Young Victoria” (2010), and “Anna Karenina” (2013). (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2023 Oscars Best Costume Design predictions.)

“Babylon” composer Justin Hurwitz knew the epic vision of his longtime friend and collaborator Damien Chazelle would be divisive. “It’s disappointing,” he tells Variety. “From the elephant poop through all the rest of the bodily fluids. I think we always knew the movie wasn’t going to be for everybody. It’s definitely disappointing that more people haven’t seen it in the theaters. I’ve read a lot of the reviews of people who absolutely love it. There are people who hate it. There’s a lot of in-between. I think it’s stunning. It’s not a conventional storyline.”

Ryan Coogler‘s “Black Panther” made history four years ago when it won the first Oscar for a Marvel Cinematic Universe film — in fact, it won three: Best Costume Design, Best Production Design and Best Score. Now, the highly anticipated sequel, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” has been nominated for five Academy Awards and could very likely win the same number of trophies. Just like last time around, the sequel is the favorite to win Best Costume Design for Ruth E. Carter. Its other potential victories are for a pair of A-list superstars: Angela Bassett in Best Supporting Actress and Rihanna in Best Song. Babylon is Damien Chazelle’s rocket-powered dive into the early days of Hollywood, decorated with orgies, elephant faeces and cocaine. There is spanking. Bacchanalian dancing. Chairs tossed through windows. And that’s all in the first 15 minutes. La La Land, Chazelle’s Oscar-winning, Bambi-eyed paen to artists, poets and the “fools that dream”, would drop dead from fright if it ever came face-to-face with it.
Tailor-made to divide audiences, this debauched drama – and a clear repudiation to those who once accused Chazelle of being too sentimental a director – puts a bullet in the head of any notion that the film industry’s silent era was ever austere or quaint. This was a frontier time, where the art of cinema was built from the ground up with zero rules and very little restraint. It was a place where the soul-sick and hungry could reinvent themselves, but not without considerable personal cost.

With 11 nominees for Best Picture, 10 for Best Director, and nine titles battling it out for Best Drama series, competition will be fierce at tonight’s Critics Choice Awards. Several ties in the voting process led the 600-member Critics Choice Association to nominate more films than a category typically allows, which simply means that even more of the year’s biggest films and shows have a shot at the prizes.

Four of our five predicted nominees for Best Costume Design at the 2023 Oscars reaped bids on January 12 for the Costume Designers Guild Awards.
“Babylon,””Elvis,” and “The Woman King” contend here in the period picture category against “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris” and “Don’t Worry Darling,” which rank seventh and 21st in our Oscar odds respectively.
The Oscar frontrunner, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” vies here in the sci-fi/fantasy race against “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “Hocus Pocus 2” and “Thor: Love and Thunder.”
Our fifth predicted Oscar nominee, “The Fabelmans,” can take heart that the guild often overlook films that go on to contend at the Academy Awards. Indeed the 2020 Oscar winner for Best Costume Design, “Little Women,” was snubbed by the CDG as were two of the other nominees, “The Irishman” and “Joker.” The guild honored one of the other academy nominees, “Jojo Rabbit.

Costume and set designer Deborah L. Scott, an Academy Award winner for Titanic, is set to receive the Career Achievement Award at the awards show. Scott — whose credits include Back to the Future, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Transformers, The Amazing Spiderman 2 and Avatar — also is nominated this year in the category of sci-fi/fantasy film for her work on Avatar: The Way of Water. “We basically built everything from the ground up, including a lot of the props, the masks, the breathing masks,” Scott recently told THR.
