It’s good to speak with the central creative forces behind a film you enjoyed — for instance, Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water, which I’d count as his best film since Hellboy II and generally one of his most well-rounded achievements. Less ideal is when I speak to them before I’ve seen it at all — for instance, when I sat down with cinematographer Dan Laustsen at this year’s Camerimage International Film Festival.
Laustsen is, as the film itself will show, a great practitioner of his craft and, to boot, rather friendly, and the working process on a project of this scale is always going to interest me, nuts-and-bolts-wise, so the result is, to my mind, still a proper overview of what went into the Cold War fantasy romance.
The Film Stage: So here’s a funny thing: the film screens on Saturday, which means I haven’t seen it.

Days of Our Lives know Kate is not a huge fan of Chad and Abigail’s marriage, but she’s going the extra mile to make sure things are getting a bit more complicated for him. She’s going to offer Gabi a chance to be the head of Dimera, and she wants to see that this is the opportunity she takes. She’s got it in her mind that if she offers this to Gabi, then there is a good chance that Gabi and Chad will work together all the time. If they manage to spend this much time together, it will throw

Days of Our Lives fans are sure that things will turn around before much longer, but we don’t know that will happen. What we do know is that Chad is working hard to make sure that his new bride is doing all right. She’s got so much going on in her life with the thought that Will might be alive, with the fact that Ben walked in on her wedding, and so much more. And she’s not happy with those things despite the fact that she’s pretending to be everything that is happy in the world. Her husband is going

Before I start my final Twin Peaks recap, let’s get one thing clear: I love Twin Peaks. And I loved this new season. And I loved the finale. I remember one hot June evening back in 1991 when the show suddenly ended on a dramatic cliffhanger and then was (seemingly) gone forever. And people hated that finale! It was so polarizing! And then we all turned against the movie. And yet…
Twenty-five years later, here we are, once again. The fans are divided. Twin Peaks has split them in two. People are either furious, or rapturous. And I am the latter.

Set to premiere this fall (hopefully in time for the Halloween season) is Syfy's new paranormal-themed series Ghost Wars, which boasts an incredible ensemble that includes Vincent D’Onofrio, Kim Coates, Meat Loaf, Avan Jogia, and Kandyse McClure. While in San Diego last weekend at Comic-Con, Daily Dead briefly spoke with Ghost Wars executive producer Dennis Heaton during a press event for the show, and he chatted about creating a supernatural series that can stand out amongst its peers, his experiences working with Syfy, putting together the cast of Ghost Wars, and more.
So, based on the trailer, this looks a little bit different than what we may be expecting. I don't know what a typical supernatural show is, but it seems like there’s more than just some ghosts going on in this.

Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series. The key image in Part 5 of the revived Twin Peaks is of a woman in ecstasy. Recall, however, the subtitle that series co-creator/director David Lynch appended to his thorny 2006 masterpiece Inland Empire: "A Woman in Trouble." The line separating rapture and anguish is a blurry one, especially for Lynch's ladies, who are as likely to end up exquisitely chiseled corpses (the ubiquitous Laura Palmer; Part 2's doomed henchwoman Darya) as they are world-weary survivors. For the moment, let's focus on Rebecca "Becky" Burnett (Amanda Seyfried), daughter of Rr Diner waitress Shelly Johnson (Mädchen Amick), though Becky's last name—taken from ne'er-do-well husband Steven Burnett (Caleb Landry Jones)—obscures the identity of her father. (Dana Ashbrook's now-law-abiding Bobby Briggs is the most likely candidate,...

Someone crashing their rival's wedding to try to sweep the bride off her feet is a soap opera staple.
Bo and Jack both did it in grand, dramatic fashions that have become classic Days of Our Lives clips.
Chad interrupted Gabi and Nick's wedding to reveal that Nick wasn't the father of Gabi's baby and chaos ensued.
All of these were great, soapy moments. But the nonsense over Abigail and Chad's vow renewal ceremony that went on almost all week wasn't.
From the second Abigail decided to renew her vows, a ton of contrived drama took over the entire show.
Kate decided that Chad belonged with Gabi and made sure to tell everyone she ran across, especially Abigail and Gabi.
Gabi tried to act like she had some morals and refused to go after Chad only because Abigail was her friend.

Some of the greatest soap drama comes from tragic heroes.
These characters have been so damaged by painful life experiences that they feel worthless and get in their own way, sometimes with tragic consequences.
That kind of drama is what drew me to Jj and to Nicole, two characters who have since been completely rewritten to lose both their zest for life and their heartbreaking self-esteem problems.
It also made Jack and Jennifer's relationship interesting back in the day, because the conflict primarily came from Jack's overwhelming sense of guilt and fear.
And it could make Eric an interesting character now, if only Days of Our Lives would put an original spin on it and not just try to copy what Jack and Jennifer had.
Eric certainly has reason to feel guilty. He has to live with the fact that he got drunk and killed his best friend in a car accident about 18 months ago,...

There are some really good plot developments as well as some seriously problematic elements in Time After Time Season 1 Episode 4
After Time After Time Season 1 Episode 3 that focused almost completely on fleshing out most of the the relationships, this offering reveals some excellent backstory to explain how so many people knew the time travelers were coming.
Thankfully, less time is spent on the labored romantic relationship between Wells and Jane although we still have to put up with a little sugary morning nonsense.

Days of Our Lives came so close to having a compelling story when Eli turned out to be Julie's grandson.
Julie's son, David, had just died suddenly and Julie was estranged from him for years.
Eli's mother is David's first love, Valerie, whose history includes being part of the first interracial couple in daytime history. And of course, Julie and Doug are not only the only remaining supercouple in Salem, but powerful actors who have carried strong storylines for decades.
This kind of story is the stuff soap viewers hunger for, so why is it so rushed and free of drama?
There was so much that was offensive, obnoxious, or downright boring this week on Days of Our Lives, yet the one story that has something to offer is not much of a story at all.

Salem weddings used to be lavish affairs.
After months or years of serious problems that were conquered by true love, a couple would throw together a romantic wedding in a ridiculously short period of time.
Weddings were the ultimate romantic fantasy and viewers were excited about them even though they knew that there was no happily ever after because the characters would have new problems to deal with and obstacles to overcome, maybe even at the wedding itself.
Times have changed and budgets become smaller, but instead of the fairy tale wedding, Days of Our Lives offered a blink-and-you-miss-it wedding for Steve and Kayla in which they seemed more like guests in someone else's story.
Steve and Kayla's wedding was mostly a backdrop for the story of Hope's return from Eric's cabin.
Before the wedding even started, Shane, Steve and Rafe were celebrating Hope's freedom.
Shane: Oh boy, I tell you,...

For over 30 years, Stefano Dimera tormented Bradys and Hortons, played opera music between implementing diabolical plots, and obsessed over his "Queen of the Night" Marlena Evans.
He was suave, sophisticated, and evil, and fans adored him.

And it's why so many viewers feel like the show stabbed them in the back with the Friday reveal that Stefano hadn't escaped or even been locked up and that two more fan favorites could be added to the list of corrupt cops helping to cover up Hope's involvement in Stefano's murder.

Nicole Walker has been one of my favorite characters since she tried being a church secretary for Eric.
The Nicole I knew then was smart, confident, and willing to be devious for a good cause.
She loved Eric but wasn't afraid to stand up to him when he left her in limbo because the church wouldn't sanction their marriage.
She kept Jj's secret about the night Theresa overdosed but expressed her concerns to Daniel.

The Christmas episodes used to be the best part of Days of Our Lives.
Every year, friends and family would gather at the Horton house to celebrate being together, hang ornaments with their name on them on the tree, and wish viewers a Merry Christmas.
Christmas was supposed to be a time for joy, love and miracles, and was often a break from the heartbreaking drama the Hortons, Bradys and other core characters suffered throughout the year.
But not this year. Salem's Christmas was minimal and depressing, with the annual ornament hanging taking up a little screen time as possible and almost nobody having any Christmas spirit.
At the beginning of the week, Jj seemed to be one of the few people who was genuinely excited about Christmas. He got a tree for his mom and groveled on the phone in order to get Gabi an ornament with her name on it.

Does anyone else remember when Lawrence Alamain raped Jennifer?
Jennifer was deeply ashamed, couldn't touch Jack without having flashbacks, and ended up calling him a rapist because she couldn't tell him the truth. It drove a wedge between them.
Some 30 years later, while trying to have sex with Gabi, Jennifer's son is having flashbacks of somebody on top of him while he looks terrified and it is freaking him out so much he can't touch her.
It's the exact same story, except for Jj is being vilified for it and his girlfriend -- along with most of the town -- doesn't want to hear about it because they all assume he cheated.
From the beginning, it was pretty obvious that whatever happened to Jj, it wasn't him voluntarily having sex with a stranger. He was too drunk to remember what happened when he awakened the next morning without any clothes on.

Jj has long been shoved into the background for no reason at all.
He is a legacy character -- the son of a supercouple and the great-grandson of Tom Horton. Yet he is often written as if he is not even part of the family. His connection to his father's brother is never acknowledged and his character rewritten to fit into a career path that doesn't fit him.
This week on Days of Our Lives, he finally got a story, but it's a horrible one.
Jj's story is, basically, that he was so upset over Abigail's "death" that he drank until he blacked out. When he awakened, he was naked and there was a note from someone thanking him for an amazing time. Therefore, he and everyone around him has concluded that he cheated on Gabi.
There are so many problems with this that it's hard to know where to begin.

Jj can never get a break.
When he was with Paige, half the town harassed him for his past, nobody paid attention to his signs of mental distress, and he ended up getting drunk and having a sexual encounter with Eve where his consent was dubious.
After Paige's death, he was able to move on with Gabi, who seems far more interested in Chad.
And now, this week Orpheus shot him at point blank range and left him for dead in the Square.
I've long wanted Jj to have a story, but did it really have to be this?
Jj as a cop didn't really ever make sense. He was an emotionally troubled teenager who was passionate about music and felt guilty about being a risk taker who didn't fit in to the Horton family mold.

Chad Radwell lept to the top of Dean Munsch’s list of suspects on Tuesday’s Scream Queens — but not for the reason you might think.
RelatedScream Queens: 10 Burning Questions We Already Have From Season 2
Special Agent Denise Hemphill revealed that her ex-lover was held back eight times in elementary school, putting him at the ripe old age of 30 — which is exactly how old the baby whose father was dumped in the swamp would be today. (I’m still not exactly sure how Dean Munsch and Co. deduced that the baby is the killer, but to be honest,...

Chad Bernstein was in the third grade when he discovered the power of music. He attended a performance by the school's fifth-grade wind ensemble and was physically moved. "All the hairs on my body stood up," Bernstein, now 32, tells People exclusively in this week's issue, on newsstands Friday. "[The music] was filling me up on the inside. I was moved to the point I was having a physical reaction to it." In 2008, while living in Miami, Bernstein turned his passion for music into an arts education and mentoring program called Guitars Over Guns. He believed young people could use music to make their lives better,...

A lot happened this week on Days of Our Lives, and for once not all of it revolved around the Hernandez family.
Not that there wasn't plenty of that, too.
Dario's idea of a date was taking Nicole to the shooting range and later interrupting her meal with Parker, Adriana reiterated her concerns about Hope yet again, and Eduardo received another threat after encouraging Steve to try to win back Kayla.
Meanwhile, life went on for the rest of Salem.
The Hernandezes are a new-ish family in town. Rafe and Gabi have both been there for years and Dario is back after a long absence, while the parents are completely new characters. Having a vibrant, interesting Hispanic family could add diversity to the canvas.
However, this family seems to have gotten bogged down by two things: dull or non-existent storylines and too much Rafe/Hope propping.

Blood Bath, The Beast With 1,000,000 Eyes and Return Of The Killer Tomatoes: it's our latest DVD and Blu-ray round-up...
Britain is in a state of turmoil, with Brexit, political leadership spinning out of control and social media civil war already underway. As such, it has perhaps never been a more appropriate time for a release of John De Bello and Stephen Peace’s 1988 meditation on the path towards peace and racial tolerance, Return Of The Killer Tomatoes, out on Arrow Bluray.
Set ten years after the events of the Great Tomato War, as depicted in uncompromising detail in De Bello and Peace’s earlier epic, Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes, tomatoes – following the mutant, sentient, strain responsible for the deaths of many citizens – are now outlawed in the Us. The word of the week in Salem is escape.
On this week's Days of Our Lives, Abigail made an all-too-easy escape from Shady Hills Mental Hospital while Andre managed to get out of jail. Meanwhile, Hope and Aiden went out of town, while Deimos tried to convince Chloe to run away and travel the world with him.
The Chad/Abigail story has been nothing short of devastating. Who expects to start married life with the new bride going insane and the new groom having to fight with his mother-in-law about the best course of treatment?
This storyline would have been even stronger had Abigail been receiving competent medical care. As usual, Dr. Robinson had no empathy and seemed overly eager to sedate Abigail. She even threatened to do it when Abby showed absolutely zero signs of agitation, just because she said she wanted to go home!
I'd much rather see...

All-new episodes of Gotham and Lucifer return Monday, Sept. 19. From award-winning executive producers Ryan Murphy (“The People V. Oj Simpson: American Crime Story,” “American Horror Story,” “Nip/Tuck”), Brad Falchuk (“American Horror Story,” “Glee,” “Nip/Tuck”) and Ian Brennan (“Glee”), Season Two of Scream Queens (9:00-10:00 Pm Et/Pt) graduates from the college campus and into a hospital with a haunted past, as a new and terrifyingly funny mystery begins. This season, Empire Entertainment founder Lucious Lyon (Terrence Howard) sets his sights on a new streaming service; as his ex-wife, Cookie Lyon (Golden Globe Award winner and Emmy Award nominee Taraji P. Henson) pursues a new romantic interest; and his sons, Jamal (Jussie Smollett), Hakeem (Bryshere “Yazz” Gray) and Andre (Trai Byers), struggle with fame and ambition.

Pitch (9:00-10:00 Pm Et/Pt) is the dramatic and emotional story of Ginny Baker (Kylie Bunbury, “Under The Dome”), who becomes the first woman to play Major League Baseball – under the glare of a white-hot media spotlight. From executive producer Dan Fogelman (“Crazy, Stupid, Love.”), the inspiring series also stars Mark-Paul Gosselaar (“Franklin & Bash,” “NYPD Blue”), Ali Larter (“Legends,” “Heroes”), Mark Consuelos (“Kingdom,” “All My Children”) and Dan Lauria (“The Wonder Years”).

Then, The Exorcist (9:00-10:00 Pm Et/Pt) returns as a contemporary psychological TV thriller following two very different priests tackling one family’s case of terrifying demonic possession. Directed by Rupert Wyatt (“Rise of the Planet of the Apes”), the series stars Academy Award and Golden Globe winner Geena Davis (“Commander in Chief,” “Thelma & Louise”), Alfonso Herrera (“Sense8,” “The Chosen”) and Ben Daniels (“Flesh and Bone,” “House of Cards”).

What is it about reality-show dudes whose names start with “Ch”?
This season of ABC’s The Bachelorette has a deli-meat-scarfing, ‘roid-raging Chad. And in a similarly troubling turn of events, this season of Lifetime’s UnREAL has a spear-throwing, Paleolithic-lifestyle-retreating Chet, who shows up just in time to seriously threaten Rachel and Quinn’s plan for, if not world domination, than certainly network queen bee-hood.
As much as I’d like to laugh off Mr. I-Lost-50-Lbs.-and-Found-My-Gonads-Gumption’s bid to reclaim Everlasting for his own, he just may succeed. And what does that say about our two favorite lady bosses,...

As years pass, and time forgets those less fortunate genre duds, The Conjuring 2 will continue to be mentioned in the same breath as Evil Dead II, Dawn Of The Dead and Aliens when fans debate their favorite – aka the greatest – horror sequels ever. This is James Wan’s “mic drop” moment, earning the sole title of The Master of Modern Horror (though you can probably expect a Highlander-esque challenge from Adam Wingard shortly). Credit Wan with almost single-handedly keeping the mainstream horror genre relevant, driven by his now signature old-school, atmospherically-driven approach. Lighting, sounds, special effects – Wan’s vision delivers horror on a multitude of levels, which once again results in nothing short of pure nightmare fuel.
Pay attention, wannabes – class is in session.
Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) spent their lives investigating paranormal events, but none could top a career-defining haunting in London’s Enfield borough.

An arson insurance scam attempt gone tragically wrong leaves low-rent criminal Elvis Martini (Nickola Shreli) with little to hold onto besides his young daughter Lena (Ava Simony) in Cash Only. Unfortunately, he also has little to provide her despite two years having passed since the incident. Money woes mount as Albanian bookies who’ve given him the benefit of the doubt for too long seek what’s owed and the bank threatens to foreclose on his five-unit apartment complex—his only means of income (when his tenants pay). He and Lena have four weeks to procure funds before they’re on the streets so the drive to squeeze his squatters for rent intensifies until Elvis’ surveillance cameras expose how one resident is stashing more than enough cash to ease his struggle for good.

‘Tis the season to rally together with your teammates, nail a last-minute headshot and return home in a blaze of gore-soaked glory. Christmas may come but once a year, but the following games managed to use all the tinsel-dossed trimmings of the festive period to make their levels truly timeless.
Hardly any of these games released to tie in with the colder months, and it wasn’t all kiddy-friendly fare either. Instead, Hitman: Blood Money encouraged you to batter a handful of gangsters dressed as Kris Kringle himself, whilst Batman’s third Arkham outing had you snapping the limbs of all sorts of themed goons.
Whether it’s a full game of Christmas cheer or a one-off utilisation of everything we love about the world’s biggest celebration of consumerism, video games might have some of the best uses of yuletide cheer across any medium.

Scream Queens delivers a cruel and ultimately disappointing season 1 finale, but that doesn't take away from its highlights...
This review contains spoilers.
1.12 Dorkus & The Final Girl(s)
It's hard to come to terms with how disappointing and infuriating Scream Queens' ending is. There are different ways a finale can let down its viewers and fans but Dorkus/The Final Girl(s) almost breaks new ground in this sense. I'd go so far as to say that Scream Queens has put Lost to shame. It doesn't so much fail to stick the landing but miss the landing entirely and break every bone in its body.
Back in July, Ryan Murphy said, "... at the end of the first season there will only be four characters out of twenty-five left" and yet ten remain. The thirteen-episode run has always seemingly been building up to a bloodbath, with Murphy effectively...

In the end, the same thing that brought down the Chanels was also the major letdown with Scream Queens as a whole: the need to be right. The exact smugness that doomed the crew of blonde psychopaths at the center of this story was the season itself’s main misstep, and one that was doubled down upon rather than made more subtle as it progressed. Being right was more important than being smart in both cases and for the show, this means being way too proud of themselves as everything gets wrapped up. Warning: Spoilers ahead from the "Scream Queens" Season 1 finale.
"Scream Queens" Season 1 just ended, with the revelation of multiple Red Devil killers: Boone (Nick Jonas), Gigi (Nasim Pedrad), Pete (Diego Boneta), and Boone's twin sister, Hester (Lea Michele), who was the only (known) Red Devil left alive after the Fox comedy's season finale.
Lea Michele's Hester was the mastermind behind the killings and also the framing of the Chanels, who ended up in an asylum where -- surprise! -- they were actually happy. (Emma Roberts's Chanel Oberlin may not stay happy since the Red Devil found her in the end.)
Now what?
Please don't question Chad. All his friends are dead and he has nothing. #ScreamQueens #ScreamQueensFinale pic.twitter.com/VoNtb6u16s

After 12 weeks of tricks, treats and long-winded monologues about boning dead people — thanks, Chad Radwell! — Scream Queens on Tuesday finally unveiled its shiny red killer. Wait, actually… make that killers.

Ready or not, here comes the Red Devil!
Scream Queens‘ mysterious masked murderer — or however many of them are out there — will finally be revealed in the Fox comedy’s two-hour season finale (Tuesday, 8/7c), and a batch of first-look photos offers a whole mess of clues (and potential red herrings) about what the full-night event has in store for the ladies of Kappa Kappa Tau.

Scream Queens, Season 1, Episode 11, “Black Friday”
Written by Ian Brennan
Directed by Barbara Brown
Airs Tuesdays at 9pm (Et) on Fox
A table setting episode that actually works as a full episode without being boring, “Black Friday” sets up all of the last pieces of the puzzle before everything is locked into place and solved for good in next week’s two-hour season finale. Nobody dies, despite the Kappa’s best efforts to off Dean Munsch, but many of the remaining players are left with their backs up against the wall as the Red Devil prepares to finish off everyone still bleeding. Grace is without a house of sisters to protect her and a boyfriend who now admits he is a murderer, Chanel is without the assurances that every plan she comes up with will succeed, Pete is a lone wolf probably being targeted by his murder partner, and Dean...

With all of the flimsy evidence pointing towards Dean Munsch being the killer, the ladies of Kappa Kappa Tau on Tuesday’s Scream Queens found themselves with but one option: Kill. Dean. Munsch.

After a mid-season slump, the last couple of episodes show Scream Queens right back on gory, entertaining form...
This review contains spoilers.
1.10 Thanksgiving
Much to my delight, Thanksgiving showed that Scream Queens was capable of maintaining the high quality of last week's sterling episode. The show had something of a wobble halfway through its first season but seemed to make up for it with Seven Minutes In Hell and Ghost Stories. This week, like a lot of Us TV, Scream Queens celebrated Thanksgiving, delivering another terrific episode.
What's instantly noticeable about Thanksgiving, and perhaps it's because of the holiday it centres around, is that it sees the show retracting its claws. Brad Falchuk's script was all about family and being with your loved ones, and so Thanksgiving took a bit of a slower, left-field approach, building up to a thrilling conclusion. It was an episode that...

Scream Queens, Season 1, Episode 10, “Thanksgiving”
Written by Brad Falchuk
Directed by Michael Lehmann
Airs Tuesdays at 9pm (Et) on Fox
“Thanksgiving” works as well as it does mostly because the specter of death is not constantly lingering over the collection of Thanksgiving dinners in the rotation. No character besides Gigi, who knows the devil’s identity already, sees the devil this episode and because of that the action can slow down for an episode and focus on relationships more fully. Rather than shouting accusations at comrades in the aftermath of an attack or making out because they are in the midst of a life threatening situation, this week the Kappa girls and all of their requisite men have the chance to sit down, discuss things, and actually breathe which is something to be thankful for. Even Gigi’s death, which should feel important seeing as she is the last person...

Is it just me, or did Scream Queens‘ “Thanksgiving” episode feel a hell of a lot more like another hour of Halloween?
Then again, I suppose a severed head showing up on the dinner table — R.I.P., Gigi! — could happen on any day in Kappa Kappa Tau, holiday or not. But let’s back up for a minute, because there was a lot (of nonsense) to digest this week.

On this episode of Scream Queens, "Ghost Stories," Chanel receives a life-changing proposal from Chad, a ghost is roaming the campus and the identity of one of the Red Devil Killers is revealed. Boone is back and has managed not to blow his cover by letting everyone believe he's Joaquin Phoenix circa I'm Still Here.
Wandering the campus of Wallace University, Boone is once again talking to his accomplice. The plan is to take out Gigi, and he also asks the mystery person if they've spoken to Zayday, which apparently, they have. So we now know that the other killer knows Zayday. Is it a current Kappa? Someone from Zayday's past with a shared connection to Boone? Or, could it be a player to be named later?...

Boone is back!
It's been weeks since Nick Jonas' character on Scream Queens faked his own death to join forces with the Red Devil, but now Boone (with a grizzly man beard, no less) has rejoined the fold.
In an exclusive First Look at this week's episode of Ryan Murphy's dramedy, Boone returns to the land of the living ... well, as far as Wallace University knows.
The images reveal that Tuesday's episode finds Boone back with his best bud – and fellow Dickie Dollar Scholar – Chad Radwell (Glen Powell) and have what looks to be a rather confrontation chat...
