Hellboy: The Crooked Man has been accused of using generative AI to design its creatures. It hasn’t (but another demon film has).
Feature image: Ron Perlman as Hellboy in Guillermo Del Toro’s Hellboy, which emphatically didn’t use generative AI.
Update: A previous version of this article was written before the film’s director issued his clarification, in which he stated that producer Jonathan Yunger’s comments were incorrectly attributed to Hellboy: The Crooked Man.
The use of AI is perhaps the most hotly debated subject in the arts today. Only a few weeks ago, we reported that AI was used in Late Night With The Devil to create the inserts seen in the film that follows David Dastmalchian’s talk show host chatting to an actual demon. Many took to social media to condemn the film’s use of it, arguing it took jobs away from real artists.

There has been a constant battle of human vs AI in art as the technology now seems to be tempting to many artists. Sure, sometimes, AI does marvel bringing out the acute wonders our minds can imagine with prompts. But how can prompts be an art form? Fans now question Millennium Films’ President’ justification as he openly admitted using AI in the new Hellboy film.

The Hellboy franchise has a unique fanbase mostly attracted to Guillermo del Toro’s two Hellboy movies starring Ron Perlman as the titular title character. The third edition of the franchise attempted to revive the legacy of the movie series with Neil Marshall helming another Hellboy starring Stranger Things and MCU star David Harbour.

Younger comic-book fans might be surprised to learn that there was once a time when Marvel Comics was on its last legs and willing to do anything to keep the company afloat. Before underdog blockbusters like the X-Men and Blade films put Marvel heroes back on the map, they were desperately trying to experiment with their comics in order to attract a wider audience.
One such experiment was the Marvel Knights imprint, a collection of stand-alone stories that initially focused on less-marketable heroes and gave artists free-reign to tell unique and more adult-oriented stories unshackled by decades of garbled continuity issues. While these stories didn’t always succeed in revitalizing characters for a new generation (and often contained the worst kind of late-90s/early 2000s edge), they were almost always incredibly stylish and memorable.
That’s why I think it’s very appropriate that Neveldine & Taylor’s film Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance...

Gerard Butler has had a varied career so far, with him playing everything from action leads to rom-com love interests to a singing Phantom of the Opera. But, it has to be said that his most consistently entertaining output falls squarely into the action genre, and as far as Gerard Butler movies go, the action films will always be our favorites… so don’t expect to see The Ugly Truth on this list, but The Bounty Hunter might scrape by. Or maybe not. Let’s see how it goes:
300 (2006)
Perhaps The film that put Gerard Butler on the map for most people, particularly the action and comic book crowds. Butler is in peek physical form here, showing off his bod as the ultimate Spartan warrior and proving that he is indeed quite the leading man. His performance here is commanding, a bit in your face (in the right way), and exactly what the film needed.

Joey Kwang is a top “Transporter” in Taipei — fast-driving and fast-thinking, she’s difficult to pin down, impossible to catch. No one can deny that Ghost Rider, the 2007 big-screen adaptation with Nicolas Cage, was a terrible superhero movie. But, it’s nothing compared to the gonzo sequel, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, which was directed by the duo Neveldine/ Taylor, who you might remember best for the Crank films. This was their big stab at making a conventional, PG-13 big studio movie, but it misfired Badly, with the film earning an even worse critical reception than its predecessor and performing even worse at the box office. So what went wrong?
In this episode of Marvel Revisited, our host Kier Gomes tries to unpack what has to be one of the most eccentric superhero movies ever made. It was produced for only half what the first movie cost and it did a few things right, such as ditching the weird wig Cage wore as Johnny Blaze in the original film. But,...

Jake Gyllenhaal is one of the best actors in modern cinema today. The Oscar nominee has been in memorable films such as Donnie Darko, Brokeback Mountain, Nightcrawler, Prisoners, Zodiac, and Source Code. Which is why it’s easy to forget some of the smaller movies in his filmography. That’s pretty much where End of Watch comes in. The David Ayer film focuses on Brian Taylor (Gyllenhaal) and Mike Zavala (Michael Pena), LAPD partners who patrol one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Los Angeles. Their honor and dedication to the job are unquestioned, even if they bend the rules from time...

For a comic book movie franchise that has never reached the heights of most Marvel or DC films of the last two decades, "Hellboy" has remained shockingly resilient. To that end, Mike Mignola's beloved character is set for yet another big-screen reboot in the form of "Hellboy: The Crooked Man." This time around, the character will be headed back to the 1950s for a folk horror adventure based on one the most celebrated storylines from the comics.
This will be the character's first film since 2019's "Hellboy." Starring David Harbour, it proved to be a critical and commercial disaster. Be that as it may, Millennium Media is set to try to bring the character to life once again with a lower-budget take on the material. So, when will you be able to see the movie? Who is playing Hellboy? Who is directing this time around? We've got all of...

A new live-action vision of Hellboy will be coming to our screens soon, a franchise reboot called Hellboy: The Crooked Man that has been directed by Crank‘s Brian Taylor from a screenplay by Chris Golden and Hellboy comic book creator Mike Mignola. The film is a Millennium Media production, and since Millennium was also behind the newly released The Expendables 4 (or Expend4bles), our own Chris Bumbray was able to talk to the company’s Les Weldon, who is a producer on both Expend4bles and Hellboy: The Crooked Man. During their conversation, Weldon revealed that we should expect this new film to be the darkest, creepiest Hellboy movie yet.
Hellboy: The Crooked Man will see Hellboy and a rookie Bprd agent stranded in 1950s rural Appalachia. There, they discover a small community haunted by witches, led by a local devil with a troubling connection to Hellboy’s past: the Crooked Man.

The video game Hellboy: Web of Wyrd is heading our way from developer Upstream Arcade and publisher Good Shepherd Entertainment – but it’s going to arrive two weeks later than previously expected. While an October 4th release date had been announced for the game, it has now been pushed back to October 18th. In a press release, Good Shepherd assured fans, “Developer Upstream Arcade is still hard at work ensuring that all players—longtime fans and newcomers to the Hellboy universe alike—receive the best experience possible.“
The game is a roguelite action brawler with an original story created in partnership with Dark Horse Comics and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola. Like the comics, the game sends Hellboy on a series of vastly different and wholly unique adventures; and while those stories stand on their own, they are all tied to the mysterious legacy of The Butterfly House. Built in 1962 by occultist Pasquale Deneveaux,...

Fans eager to give Hellboy another chance on the silver screen rejoice! Ketchup Entertainment snagged the rights to Millennium Media‘s Hellboy: The Crooked Man, starring Jack Kesy as the kitten-loving, pancake-eating demon with an attitude and guns under his trenchcoat. With Hellboy: The Crooked Man officially done filming, its arrival will undoubtedly be met with a mixture of skepticism and hype–based so much on the critical and commercial failure of 2019’s take. For many, the David Harbour-starring attempt was more than enough to sour the franchise; yet, how much worse could another go be? Some, however, will be completely indifferent, like Ron Perlman, who suggested the future of Hellboy is pretty far down on his list of things he should care about.
Speaking with ComicBook.com, Ron Perlman said he’s not terribly interested in any other Hellboy movies except for the ones he did with Guillermo del Toro. “What happens with the character and the franchise on the periphery of any of that is none of my business…I prefer to just dwell in the feeling that I continue to have having played him and having played him...

Veteran media executive Yoko Higuchi-Zitzmann took over as CEO of Telepool in January, barely a year after Will and Jada Pinkett Smith’s Westbrook took full control, in December 2021, of the German rights giant.
The appointment was a bit of a coup. The Japan-born, Germany-educated Higuchi-Zitzmann has more than a quarter century of experience in some of Europe’s biggest media companies. She was an acquisitions exec for Constantin Film — scoring Olivier Dahan’s Oscar winner La Vie En Rose for the German market among other deals — and producer at renowned German groups Ziegler Cinema — where she delivered sleeper hit My Blind Date With Life, a romantic comedy that earned more than $5 million at the German box office for distributor StudioCanal — and Studio Hamburg, where her hits included Herzogpark, a Desperate Housewives-style series for leading German network Rtl. Scottish actor Gerard Butler has been headlining some of Hollywood's biggest, most successful, and most talked-about blockbuster releases for three decades. If any 2000s action star has a claim to A-list status, it's him. However, it still feels like not enough people discuss his acting talents.
For most of his career, Butler has prioritized a kind of unapologetically corny and popular cinema that often skews ... controversial, to say the least. Good and campy fun is Butler's bread-and-butter -- whether it's action, romance, adventure, or a musical. The key to appreciating him as a performer is to understand this fact and fall in love with the easy-watching pleasure these movies provide. However, it's also worth noting what deeper dimensions Butler brings to these roles, too. So here's an appraisal of the 12 best Gerard Butler movies. For the unacquainted, these picks will help viewers fall in love with the man's unique brand of crowd-pleasing entertainment.

German film and TV distribution and licensing company Telepool, which is owned by Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith’s Westbrook, is moving into lead producing movies and series, its CEO Yoko Higuchi-Zitzmann tells Variety exclusively in her first interview since joining the company in January.
Munich-based Telepool is celebrating its 60th anniversary on Wednesday, and although it has a barrel-load of experience in selling, distributing, licensing, financing and co-producing movies and series, this shift into initiating and lead producing represents a significant step for the company. It also forms part of Westbrook’s broader strategy for international expansion, which – in part – lay behind its acquisition of Telepool in December 2021.

The search for the best director of the latest Hellboy saga is on after it’s been confirmed that Jack Kesy will star as the lead for the upcoming feature. Brian Taylor is attached to the project as the director, but given how early of a development this is, it wouldn’t be surprising if another filmmaker landed the spot for the comic book film. Hellboy has struggled to truly find its footing in the mainstream since Guillermo del Toro’s attempt at a franchise back in 2004. Hellboy and Hellboy II: The Golden Army has been highly regarded as some of the...

A new "Hellboy" reboot is coming! Created by artist and writer Mike Mignola in 1993 for Dark Horse Comics, Hellboy is a larger-than-life half-human, a half-demon superhero. Through the decades, Hellboy has found steady success in printed publications and continued to appear on the page even 30 years after his origin. In a comics landscape that is consistently changing, Hellboy has managed to stay endlessly relevant.
While the monster hunter has been successful in the arena of comic books, his arrival on the silver screen is mired with uncertainty. The character has been previously brought to life in Guillermo del Toro's two-part film franchise starring actor Ron Perlman as the harbinger of the apocalypse. While the first two films made a "little bit of profit," a third never materialized as studios saw it as a "dangerous" project, del Toro once revealed.
A 2019 reboot of the film starring actor David Harbour was a commercial and critical failure.

According Hellboy.Fandom, Tom Ferrell is a character from the comic books who “was born around 1923 in the Appalachian mountains near the Hurricane (an area locals try to avoid) to a mother we know little of and his father, Charles E. Ferrel, who had a habit of drinking in the back woods. His early misadventures with witchcraft led to a self-imposed exodus.

It doesn't feel like all that long ago we were getting ready for a "Hellboy" reboot from director Neil Marshall ("The Descent") with David Harbour, of "Stranger Things" fame, in the title role. Harbour looked great, the cast had a lot of promise, and yet, the film flopped spectacularly when it debuted in 2019 both critically and commercially. Be that as it may, Millennium Media is going to give it another try with an R-rated, horror-skewing take on the Dark Horse Comics character in the form of "Hellboy: The Crooked Man." And, for better or worse, it seems very much like it's going to be a lower budget affair, particularly as comic-book movies go.
Even 2019's "Hellboy" only carried a reported $50 million budget, which is modest compared to say a Marvel movie, which can easily cost close to $200 million these days. But we have some evidence that suggests Millennium is going...

Just last week, we learned that a new attempt was being made to bring Mike Mignola's Hellboy to the big screen. And by that, we mean a new new attempt, ditching the version starring David Harbour. So who is the new Hellboy? Step forward Jack Kesy.
In case this is your cue to say, "who Kesy"? you might have seen him in Deadpool 2 (briefly), 12 Strong, Baywatch and TV shows such as The Strain and Claws.
The new movie, which features Crank's Brian Taylor directing and Mignola writing the script alongside comics collaborator Christopher Golden, will adapt The Crooked Man. The story sees Hellboy stranded in 1950s rural Appalachia with a rookie Bprd agent. There they discover a small community haunted by witches, led by a local devil with a troubling connection to Hellboy’s past: the Crooked Man.

Life's been hard on Big Red, so far as his live-action outings are concerned. Both "Hellboy" (2004) and its sequel, 2008's "Hellboy II: The Golden Army," are evidence that auteur-driven superhero movies are the best kind there is. Sadly, however, neither of Guillermo del Toro's playfully grotesque supernatural action adventures was a runaway box office hit. On top of that, "The Golden Army" had the misfortune of opening in theaters two months after "Iron Man" and a mere week before "The Dark Knight." Sandwiched between those two game-changing comic book films, it's no wonder del Toro's off-beat creature feature got left in the dust, killing his plans for an apocalyptic finale to the trilogy in the process.
After the Neil Marshall-helmed "Hellboy" reboot fell flat on its face in 2019, it was only natural to assume Hellboy would be spending the foreseeable future in franchise prison. Surprisingly, though, that's not the case.

Officially confirmed, Millennium Media is developing a new live-action Hellboy film, with Brian Taylor (Crank, Gamer, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, Mom and Dad) directing the movie.
The fresh new reboot is titled Hellboy: The Crooked Man, and it’s based on a popular Hellboy mini-series from 2008. Production is starting next month in Bulgaria, we’ve learned.
Speaking with Collider this week, director Brian Taylor explains that Hellboy: The Crooked Man will most definitely be rated “R,” describing the project as a folk horror movie.
“I pitched an R-rated folk horror movie and the team here at Millennium have been nothing but supportive. It’s a great group of people, and they love horror,” Taylor teases.
The filmmaker continues, “…this original material is dark and scary and violent and adult. So in order to really embrace that, we just don’t wanna have any handcuffs on.”

Given that the most recent attempt to bring Mike Mignola's Hellboy to the screen — with David Harbour as the title character — earned a poor 55 million worldwide (against a 50 million budget), it's perhaps surprising to learn that Mignola and others are looking to try again. But it's true!
Originally reported by Discussing Film and since confirmed by Deadline, the latest film will adapt comics tale The Crooked Man. Mignola and Christopher Golden are on script duty and — in possibly a more intriguing development – Brian Taylor, Aka one half of Crank duo Neveldine/Taylor is aboard to direct.
The story will see Hellboy and a rookie Bprd agent stranded in 1950s rural Appalachia. There, they discover a small community haunted by witches, led by a local devil with a troubling connection to Hellboy’s past: the Crooked Man.

After the failure of the last Hellboy reboot, Millennium Media is giving the fan-favourite comic-book character another shot. It was announced just days ago that Brian Taylor had signed on to direct Hellboy: The Crooked Man, a new reboot which will be scripted by Hellboy creator Mike Mignola in collaboration with Christopher Golden. While speaking with Collider, Taylor spilled a few details about Hellboy: The Crooked Man, including that it will be an R-rated folk horror movie.

“So first of all, I love the character of Hellboy and my favorite run of the character is this particular era,” Brian Taylor said. “The Gdt movies were massive scale space operas and just pure Del Toro through and through. But some of the comics Mike (Mignola) was doing at the time had a very different feeling. More lean and mean, creepy folk horror.
