With its rave reviews, three-month window of cultural supremacy and 24 Emmy nominations, HBO’s The Last of Us gave all subsequent game-to-screen translations an exhilarating new freedom. It’s no longer necessary for an adaptation to bear the weight of an entire genre’s credibility. “Greatness” has been achieved and it’s now fully acceptable for a video game adaptation to simply be “decent.”

Peacock’s new series based on the venerable and versatile Twisted Metal franchise is — and I mean this generally as a compliment — quite decent. Both as colorful and as deep as a shimmering oil slick on a sweltering stretch of abandoned blacktop, Twisted Metal lacks the budget and ingenuity to consistently live up to the game’s sense of unrelenting mayhem. But its limitations make room for a solid character-based story to develop around stars Anthony Mackie and Stephanie Beatriz.

Plot: A motor-mouthed outsider is offered a chance at a better life, but only if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland. With the help of a badass axe-wielding car thief, he’ll face savage marauders driving vehicles of destruction and other dangers of the open road, including a deranged clown who drives an all too familiar ice cream truck.
Review: Back in the 1990s, when Playstation was the most popular gaming console, Twisted Metal was one of the go-to games my friends and I would throw in and play together. Driving around in weapon-laden cars and blowing each other to hell was fun and made up for the lack of a truly engaging plot. Bill Hader may be a comedian, but he certainly seems to take his personal life quite seriously. The "Barry" actor was married to filmmaker Maggie Carey for 11 years before they ultimately split in 2017. While Hader has since gotten back in the dating game, he previously opened up to Variety about how his career has affected his family life.
"When I was on 'SNL,' I was a bit of a basket case," he explained of his time on the late-night comedy sketch show. "It could not have been easy on my wife at the time. I was so consumed with work and anxiety." Of welcoming their two eldest daughters, Hannah and Harper, Hader added, "Once our second child was born, I had to leave 'SNL.' It was hard with one kid, let alone two. Because I was just never around."

Live performance is an alternately exhilarating and terrifying experience. You can rehearse a play or a skit or a stand-up act until it's muscle memory, but you are also a human being and sometimes your brain has other ideas. And if you suffer from an anxiety disorder, as I do, there isn't a worse place in the world to be. In a millisecond, you cycle through feelings of shame, fury, inadequacy and profound despair. You're letting down your castmates and colleagues, and, most horrifyingly, you're being exposed as an unwell person.
Panic attacks are harrowing and suffocating in even the most seemingly benign situations, so imagine having one while being beamed live into millions of living rooms via the premiere sketch comedy show on the planet. This happened to Bill Hader frequently throughout his brilliant eight-year run on "Saturday Night Live." If you're thinking none of this bled through to his work,...

For the first time ever, e.l.f. Cosmetics, the affordable makeup brand found in retailers like Cvs, Target, and Ulta Beauty, is releasing a TV commercial during the 2023 Super Bowl on Sunday. They’ve tapped The White Lotus’ Jennifer Coolidge to star in the 30-second campaign, and Mike White, creator of the hit HBO comedy-drama series, to write it.
“Jennifer is a fan of e.l.f. She loves Power Grip Primer, and she is especially drawn to our cruelty-free stance,” Kory Marchisotto, e.l.f. Beauty’s chief marketing officer, told The Hollywood Reporter in an emailed statement. “Her authenticity, humor, beauty and e.l.f.ing energy, coupled with Mike White’s brilliant writing, brought the campaign to life in a way that no one else could do. It was a dream come true for us on many levels.”

After conquering the awards circuit this year, Jennifer Coolidge is now taking on the Super Bowl.
The Emmy-winning star of HBO’s “The White Lotus” collaborated with show creator Mike White on a 30-second spot for e.l.f. Cosmetics, a TikTok obsession and Gen-z beauty supplier. It will air during Sunday’s showdown between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs.
The brand’s “eyes.lips.face.sticky” campaign sees Coolidge discover the effectiveness of e.l.f.’s Power Grip Primer, a pre-makeup application known for grasping beauty products (and anything else poor Coolidge touches as she applies it). Watch the hilarious spot above.
The ad is the brand’s first ever to air during the Super Bowl, and as co-written by White and Shadow, e.l.f.’s longtime creative marketing and communications agency.

The “O.C.” actress and Hader were first romantically linked in 2019, before calling it quits in summer 2020 after making their red carpet debut together at the Golden Globes earlier that year.
Bilson spoke about the breakup on the latest episode of her “Broad Ideas” podcast, with guest Tommy Dorfman asking: “When you and Bill broke up what did you miss the most?” Us Weekly reported.
Bilson jokingly replied, “His big d**k,” adding: “We can keep that. … And cut, let’s move on.”
The star, who shares 7-year-old daughter Briar Rose with ex Hayden Christensen, previously told her podcast guest Mandy Moore that she’d been through a “really hard breakup” during the pandemic.

Will Anna Kendrick be making her way on to HBO's Barry? That would be a hard "no." Ahead of the season three premiere of Barry on April 24, Bill Hader was asked whether he would be interested in having his girlfriend Kendrick appear on the comedy series. "Oh no," Hader told Entertainment Tonight, shooting down the question. This news comes one month after Hader explained that his kids are the reason he is so tight-lipped about his relationship with the 36-year-old actress. Hader has three daughters—Hannah, 12, Harper, 9, and Hayley, 7—with ex-wife Maggie Carey. The pair divorced in 2018 after being together for 11 years. "They just want me to...

In an age when people are far too used to blasting through entire seasons (or series) in a weekend, it’s a pleasure to celebrate the concept of the great episode: a concise bite of storytelling that functions as its own narrative as well as a part of a larger whole.
Last year’s list was 25 episodes, but expanding this list to 30 became necessary given the incredible scope of television to be considered — across all platforms, there was too much to celebrate. Some of the series below represent the year’s most significant programs, while others may not have made IndieWire’s best-of lists, but deserved recognition for what they achieved within individual installments. From soul-deep despair to giggle-inducing joy, the range of TV in 2018 covered all corners of the human existence.

The Emmy Awards ballot for Best Comedy Directing lists 195 episodes from 105 series, up from 174 episodes from 82 series last year, when the nominees were:
“Atlanta” season 1
Winner — “B.A.N.” (Donald Glover)
“Silicon Valley” season 4
“Intellectual Property” (Jamie Babbit)
“Server Error” (Mike Judge)
“Veep” season 6
“Blurb” (Morgan Sackett)
“Justice” (Dale Stern)
“Groundbreaking” (David Mandel)

“Veep” did not air this season. Lead “Atlanta” director Hiro Murai was snubbed last year; he has a stronger episode this time and more name recognition from directing the music video for Childish Gambino’s “This is America.”
Having been nominated two years ago for “Silicon Valley” when he last directed it, Alec Berg has submitted his work on the first season finale of “Barry.” He also directed this season’s “Silicon Valley” finale, but Best Comedy Directing is one of only six categories that precludes multiple ballot submissions. “Barry” is a story filled with payback. Rival mafia gangs order retaliatory hits as payback for dwindling numbers. Even Barry’s (Bill Hader) decision to stick with his acting class is, on some level, a way to get back at Fuches (Stephen Root), his manipulative handler.
A character who doesn’t get that same sense of revenge is Sally (Sarah Goldberg), one of Barry’s classmates. In last week’s episode, a meeting with her potential agent goes from hopeful to predatory when he tells Sally, “I get to this point with a lot of my prospective clients where I have a decision to make: Do I wanna sign them or do I wanna fuck them?” The jarring comment hangs in the air as Sally, unsure of how to respond, pauses, then fumbles until the agent tries to play it off as joke.

Bill Hader is going through with his divorce.
The Saturday Night Live alum officially filed for divorce from his wife of 11 years, director Maggie Carey, with the Superior Court of California in Los Angeles County on Thursday, citing irreconcilable differences, in court documents obtained by Et.
The filing lists the couple's date of separation as July 31 of this year, and asks for joint custody of the couple's three daughters -- 8-year-old Hannah, 5-year-old Harper and 3-year-old Hayley -- as well as spousal support for Carey.

Netflix’s “Love” may be one of the hardest TV series titles to search on Google. But the folks behind the show still like the title.
“It’s like how I love when I see a diner and it’s just called ‘Food,'” said executive producer Judd Apatow, speaking to IndieWire with stars Paul Rust and Gillian Jacobs. “No need to come up with a fancy name.”
“You can’t get angry,” Rust added. “They’re like, ‘Hey, we promised food.'”
In a similar fashion, with the title “Love,” Apatow, Rust, and co-creator Lesley Arfin have promised to depict that most complex yet most simple of human emotions on the screen. But they don’t promise a happy ending, which makes the quasi-comedy at times a nerve-wracking experience. Perhaps that’s because the show remains firmly grounded in the real world, where happy endings are rarely a guarantee.

She duly sets out to seduce Rusty by taking a job as a lifeguard at the pool where he works but faces several obstacles along the way. Coming of age films and comedies about sex have become a staple of 21st Century cinema, and with The To Do List set to be released on February 3rd, we thought now would be a good time to look back at some of the best movies to fall within this category.
The To Do List – which stars Aubrey Plaza, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Rachel Bilson – focuses an Idaho school in 1993 and one girl’s determination to woo, seduce and biblically know her high school crush before College begins. Don’t get me wrong. I love romantic comedies, but that’s not what this is. Brandy is stereotypically male…treating sex like she’s studying for a test.”

Former "Saturday Night Live" funnyman Bill Hader was on "Conan" Monday (Jan. 27), touching on a variety of subjects -- everything from "Star Wars" impressions to the time he grossed out Kathie Lee Gifford on "Today." But perhaps his funniest anecdote was about his new movie "The Skeleton Twins."
The movie, which premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, is about estranged twins (Hader and former "SNL" co-star Kristen Wiig) who reunite after separately cheating death on the same day. "Modern Family" star Ty Burrell is also in the movie, but his big make-out scene with Hader ended up on the cutting room floor.
"He and I, in this film, play ex-lovers and we have a pretty -- they cut it from the movie -- but we had a pretty hot make-out scene. ... They cut it out of the movie, which really bummed me out," Hader says. "I called Ty and I was like,...

Colin Jost, named today as Seth Meyers’ imminent Weekend Update successor, has been writing for the sketch show since 2005 (shortly after he graduated from Harvard; underachiever) and was named its co-head writer in 2012. Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader spent seven years together on Saturday Night Live, so when you hear they’re starring in a movie together — playing twins no less — you might expect it to be an outrageous comedy. When you then hear it’s also a Sundance movie, you might conclude that it’s something quirky-funny like Adventureland, the 2009 festival hit in which they played the married couple that runs a rinky-dink amusement park. But The Skeleton Twins is something entirely different — a full-on drama. They play Maggie and Milo, twins who used to be close but now live on different sides of the country.

What do you write about a movie as ruthlessly, robotically dirty-minded as The To Do List? Here is a film so utterly committed to providing gross-out punchlines for its lewd, one-joke premise that it ends up stranding a talented cast with a painfully stiff, horrifically out-of-touch script that does more to enforce gender stereotypes than shatter them.
The film centers on gawky high-school valedictorian Brandy Klark (Aubrey Plaza), who attempts to complete a check-list of sexual experiences before heading off to college. Getting in her way though is the competing attentions of sweet and sensitive Cameron (Johnny Simmons) and dreamboat Rusty Waters (Scott Porter), who complicate Brandy’s studious and organized approach to intercourse.
My gut reaction to The To Do List was not revulsion but rather, disappointment. This comedy was meant to cement Plaza’s status as one of Hollywood’s most talented young comediennes, following two other terrific...

A Porky's-style coming-of-age comedy for the girls rather than the guys, but every bit as awful

The Bucket List had two terminally ill old men compiling a list of things to do before they died, but both were lucky enough to peg out without having to suffer this movie.
It's arguable that there's something empowering about a Porky's-style comedy in which the girls (rather than the guys) are in the driving seat, with star Aubrey Plaza declaring that "I don't think that I had ever read a script about a girl who is trying to lose her virginity that is realistic and pushes the envelope".
Yet writer/director Maggie Carey's clodhopping coming-of-age yarn merely proves that terrible teen movies are now a source of equal-ops embarrassment for both genders. Plaza plays the straight-a student who resolves to work her way through the sexual lexicon,...
