From 1938 to 1941, he wrote radio plays, and after the war he wrote 50 television scripts.
He was a captain in the Army Air Force during WWII and flew a B-24 Liberator in the South Pacific.
He earned a history degree at Stanford University and a subsequent degree at UCLA.
