The lead actress for Disney Pixar’s Elemental shared an update on her involvement in its potential sequel, Elemental 2.
Leah Lewis voiced Ember alongside Mamoudou Athie’s Wade. While the two started on rocky footing, they eventually turned out to be a pretty sweet couple, getting a happy ending by the time the credits rolled.
As for what’s next, Elemental writers John Hoberg and Kat Likkel confirmed last year to The Direct that they had a scrapped idea to introduce Ember and Wade’s child: "a steam baby."

Since the academy expanded the Best Picture category at the Oscars in 2010, Best Original Screenplay has gone to writers of a wide-range of genres: dramas; comedies (“Midnight in Paris”); biopics; true-life stories (“Spotlight”); memoirs (“Belfast”); period pictures (“Django Unchained”); war movies (“The Hurt Locker”); sci-fi (“Her”), thrillers horror (“Get Out”) and fantasies (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) . (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2023 Oscar predictions for Best Original Screenplay.)
Regardless of the type of film, a nominee needs broad academy support to win this race. Indeed, all 14 of the most recent Best Original Screenplay winners were, at the least, Best Picture nominees. And seven of them won the big prize, bringing the total number of Best Picture champs with Oscar-winning original screenplays to 18. By comparison, 42 films have done this on the adapted side including the 2022 double dipper “Coda.”
In 2023 all five nominees for Best Original Screenplay at the Academy Awards were crafted by writer/directors.

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with Elemental, the Pixar pic directed by Peter Sohn.
Launching with a world premiere as the closing-night film at May’s Cannes Film Festival, Elemental was penned by John Hoberg & Kat Likkel and Brenda Hseuh, based on a story by the writers and Sohn about a fantastical place called Element City, where Fire-, Water-, Earth- and Air-residents live together.
The plot follows the quick-witted and fiery Ember (Leah Lewis), a new arrival to the city whose friendship with go-with-the-flow Wade (Mamoudou Athie) challenges not only her beliefs about the world they live in, but the person she wants to be.
The idea germinated from Sohn’s own experiences; like Ember, he was a second-generation immigrant whose parents moved from Korea to New York City. That starting point helped to form the film’s themes of fitting in to a new place,...

The Disney and Pixar film “Elemental” had a strong start on Disney+, with the film pulling in 26.4 million views in its first five days of streaming availability.
Per Disney, that makes “Elemental” the most-watched movie premiere of the year on the service and among the top 10 movie premieres they have ever had. For context, Disney defines a view as total stream time divided by runtime, just like Netflix recently started doing. The film became available on Disney+ on Sept. 13. Disney also says “Elemental” has become the most viewed animated movie premiere since Disney and Pixar’s “Turning Red” was released in March 2022, as well as the most-viewed Disney+ movie premiere of all time in Latin America, just ahead of “Turning Red.”
By comparison, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” debuted with 1.625 billion minutes viewed in its first five days of availability on Disney+, which translates to approximately 10.8 million views.

There appear to be some misconceptions about the box office returns for Disney and Pixar‘s Elemental. The emotional animated feature is entering its seventh week in theaters, and according to Disney, it’s a significant success for the studio. The numbers don’t lie, and Elemental is burning brightly with $425.2M in worldwide receipts. Elemental might have started slowly with a $29.5M domestic debut, but it’s picked up steam in the weeks since.
If you’re asking yourself how the film could endure after a disappointing start, look no further than its 93% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and “A” grade on CinemaScore. Many of Pixar’s films essentially ask, ‘What if such-and-such a thing had feelings and emotions?”, whether it’s toys in Toy Story or emotions themselves in Inside Out (still one of Pixar’s best). This time round, that concept applies to the elements, namely fire, water, earth and air,...

Note: The following John Hoberg and Kat Likkel interview discusses major spoilers for “Elemental.”
With “Elemental” now in theaters, audiences are seeing the beauty of both Element City and the love story between a fire element named Ember (voiced by Leah Lewis) and a water element named Wade (voiced by Mamoudou Athie). They’re also seeing how emotionally charged and, at times, sad their love story can be.
Screenwriters John Hoberg and Kat Likkel came onto the story in 2019, after three previous versions of the script had already been workshopped. Speaking with TheWrap, the pair laughed about how their version was the first to introduce the concept of Wade dying to save Ember.
“Our first version was the fourth version, and he didn’t die in the previous three, so I guess that was our first contribution: killing Wade,” Hoberg said.

Disney and Pixar’s latest animated feature, “Elemental,” is a charming drama about family and identity, centering the story of two elements, Ember and Wade, who fall in love with each other. Many different themes are tackled within, from questions of personal identity to the struggles of immigration. But at a certain point Ember talks about how, as a fire element who can cause things to ignite just by standing next to them, the “world is not designed for me.”
My ears immediately perked up when I heard that line. As a disabled person, I say this regularly because the world is definitely not designed with me in mind, or most disabled people for that matter. Director Peter Sohn and co-screenwriters John Hoberg and Kat Likkel didn’t intend to tell a disabled story, but the story they told is one that does resonate with marginalized people. “The idea of...

The new Pixar and Disney animated feature “Elemental” has several classic film inspirations behind it, ranging all the way from the 1967 romantic drama “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” to 1974’s “Godfather 2” (you read that right).
For director Peter Sohn, no film was off-limits for a story that held deep personal connection to him. “Films that took cities and made them into characters. The beautiful Gordon Willis cinematography of ‘Manhattan’ or ‘Annie Hall.’ ‘Amelie,’ how they made Paris into a postcard, but then love stories from ‘Sense and Sensibility’ to ‘Moonstruck,'” Sohn told TheWrap.
But whether the film is considered a romantic comedy is a point of contention between the cast and the writers. “Whenever people call this a rom-com — not to disagree, there are obviously romantic elements — but, for me, this movie has been always primarily about family,” said Mamoudou Athie, who plays Wade in the film.

Everyone has their favorite Pixar movie — mine is Coco, with Wall-e and Ratatouille very close seconds — and no matter which title you prefer in the game-changing animation studio’s catalogue, almost every one of them feels unique. (The Cars and Toy Story sequels aside, although even some of those were fresh and original).
But in the last few years, Pixar, which Disney purchased for more than $7 billion back in 2006, has failed to deliver the goods like it used to. Soul was ambitious but played too much like a jazzy riff on Inside Out. Luca was fun in the Italian sun but also too slight. Lightyear was an unnecessary spinoff of a great franchise that should have ended as a trilogy.
Which brings us to Elemental. The studio’s 27th feature, has, well, all the elements that make up a great Pixar movie: A high-concept pitch that could only be rendered...

The wonderful folks at Pixar Animation are ready to unleash their 27th feature with the imaginative "Elemental." Drawing inspiration from director Peter Sohn's youth growing up as a second-generation immigrant in New York City, the film is a celebration of cultural and ethnic diversity, wrapped in a heartwarming romantic comedy. The story is said to be inspired by films like "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner," "Moonstruck," and "Amélie," but is presented in a way that appeals to audiences of all ages.
"Elemental" is also one of Pixar's most ambitious films to date, with producer Denise Ream telling Total Film Magazine, "We knew it was going to be hard. We didn't know it was going to be as hard as it was." As all of the characters are different elements, they all move in entirely different ways. Considering the film showcases an entire city of different elemental folk interacting with one another,...

In a competitive bidding war, Paramount Players has acquired the rights to develop an untitled country music musical with “Across the Universe” producer Matthew Gross and country music super-producer Mark Bright on board to develop.
Gross brought the project to the studio, and the fact that Bright was producing the film’s soundtrack stood as a prominent selling point in the bidding war. Bright produced for major acts including Rascal Flatts and Carrie Underwood. Both he and Gross will produce the album, with Gross producing the film.
Following the success of musicals like “The Greatest Showman,” studios are seeing a huge market for the genre, and Paramount is now fast-tracking the pic to pre-production.
The script will be penned by “Galavant” showrunners Kat Likkel and John Hoberg based on an idea conceived by Gross at the 2018 Stagecoach musical festival. Likkel and Hoberg will also exec produce. Shane Stevens and Karyn Rochelle...

ABC’s “American Housewife” and “American Idol” are airing a crossover episode in March, the network announced Tuesday at the Television Critics Association press tour.
The “American Housewife” episode, which is semi-confusingly titled “American Idol,” is set for Tuesday, March 19 at 8/7c. It will include guest spots from “Idol” judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie and host Ryan Seacrest.
“American Housewife’s” “American Idol” follows Taylor’s (Meg Donnelly) dream of becoming a musical superstar, per ABC. Parents Katie (Katy Mixon) and Greg (Diedrich Bader) are skeptical when Taylor announces she will use her college fund to travel to Los Angeles, audition for “American Idol,” wow the judges and become an overnight sensation — but Taylor’s passion is undeniable.
The episode was written by Jordan Roter and directed by John Putch. It won’t be the lone musical episode of this third season of “Housewife.”

When Legendary Television executives decided to submit “Downward Dog” at Sundance, executive producer Samm Hodges laughed. On paper, a network show about a talking dog doesn’t sound like Sundance fare.
The ABC canine comedy follows Martin, a dog suffering from ennui and a bit of depression as he ruminates about his relationship with his owner, Nan (Allison Tolman). The twist: Martin narrates his life and speaks to the camera, but doesn’t actually interact with the show’s characters.
“It’s not the kind of thing that’s going to quickly going to be considered the best show ever,” Hodges said. “It’s a low-concept premise. And so I didn’t think we had any chance at all. When we got in, I was really shocked.”
But Legendary Television president Lauren Whitney said the production company gave it a shot because its unusual premise was “ambitious, independent, and brilliant — long the hallmarks of Sundance.

The third and fourth episodes of Galavant wisely focus on strengthening the bonds between the main trio on their journey to do… something. On a quest. There’s singing?
Probably the biggest fault with Galavant right now is its marriage between humor and plot. This isn’t a show where one tunes in to watch what happens next and the show’s go-with-it tone makes for quite a forgetful voyage. Why are our “heroes”—Galavant, Isabella and Sid—traveling to King Richard’s kingdom? The episodes remind viewers that Isabella is definitely double crossing Galavant, our egotistical hero, and that there is a very important Macguffin crystal, but besides that, is anyone really watching for the plot?...

It won’t be a development season if ABC, run by British-born Paul Lee, doesn’t adapt several UK formats. The network has put in development No Angels, a half-hour single-camera comedy based on the praised 2004 hourlong dramedy, which aired on Channel 4 for two seasons. Producing are Amblin TV and ABC Studios, partners on the new ABC drama series Lucky 7, also based on a British format. Written by Kat Likkel & John Hoberg (The Neighbors, My Name Is Earl), who will serve as showrunners, No Angels is about a raucous group of four female nurses working together and sharing the same house in a Bridesmaids-style girl gang comedy. Exclusive: Warner Bros has hired Richard Cordiner to script Spacesuit, based on the book by Nicholas de Monchaux. This tells the true story of the unsung heroes of the Apollo space program — a team of bra and girdle designers from Playtex who successfully built the iconic spacesuit that enabled Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin to walk on the moon. This improbable band of outsiders — led by a former TV repairman, a car mechanic, and their crew of spirited seamstresses — accomplished what all the aerospace giants couldn’t. It’s a long way from the shop floor of Playtex to the surface of the moon, and this incredible story tracks how it happened. Marc Shmuger’s Global Produce brought the project to the studio, and Shmuger and Tom McNulty will produce with Alexandra Loewy overseeing development. Kat Likkel and John Hoberg are exec producers and Jon Berg and Racheline Benveniste are overseeing for the studio.

Rules Of Engagement star David Spade and Rachael Harris (The Hangover) are set as co-leads opposite Sharon Horgan in Horgan’s ABC single-camera comedy pilot Bad Management. Written by Horgan and Holly Walsh and executive produced by Aaron Kaplan, Bad Management centers on a slightly self-centered female boss (Horgan) at a high-end luxury goods department store who finds her ways challenged when the boss’ son, Tobias Jr. (Spade), comes to town and makes youth and sex the new company focus. Harris plays Linda, a store employee who finally gives up on her long-time spray tan habit. ABC Studios is producing, with Kat Likkel & John Hoberg also exec producing. CBS’ Rules, now in its seventh season, is unlikely to return, in part because producer Sony TV will have to make new deals with the original cast whose contracts are up this season. That made the core actors available for new series,...

After working together on various TV shows over the years — Better off Ted and My Name is Earl, to name a few — this marks the duo’s first feature length writing deal. The novel “recounts the true story of how a team of bra and girdle makers from Playtex successfully designed and created the spacesuit that enabled Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin to walk on the moon.” Monchaux has been described as an architect as well as an urbanist, who strives to examine the parallels between nature, technology and the city. Spacesuit is his first novel, which was released just last year.

For reasons unknown to any sane individual, ABC has plunked down the writing team of Jon Hoberg and Kat Likkel to crap out a single-camera half-hour comedy based on a ridiculous-sounding memoir called My Formerly Hot Life, by Stephanie Dolgoff, who is apparently an expert in little aside form Being Younger, Once. The memoir was nabbed in a "competitive situation," which brings to mind, abstractly, that poster of bulldogs playing poker. Something about the level of class involved, I think.
