On an otherwise uneventful Friday evening, about 95 million people watched a white Ford Bronco slowly driving down the 5 freeway.
The driver of the car, of course, was O.J. Simpson, the NFL star turned actor and TV broadcaster, and that day he officially was named as a murder suspect in the deaths of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman.
America was glued to their TV sets, with the broadcast networks breaking into their regular programing, and the lone cable news channel CNN having its star host Larry King guide viewers through the action (watch it here).
The chase and subsequent trial (“The Trial of the Century,” as declared by multiple news outlets), with its live cameras in the courtroom, became gripping must-see TV. The not-guilty verdict — handed down at 10 a.m. on a weekday — was watched live by more than 150 million people (on day one of the 1991 Gulf War,...

Uncork’d Entertainment rolls out a black carpet of death with their new creature feature The Deadly Swarm, which flies onto Digital and On Demand outlets today, April 2nd.
In the tradition of films like The Swarm (1978) and Black Swarm (2007), The Deadly Swarm comes from producer Tyler James.
From writer and director David Gregory (Krampus: The Return), Uncorkd’s The Deadly Swarm follows a group of cash desperate friends who attend a medical trial retreat.
“Lured under false pretenses and run by the suspicious Dr. Feldman, little do they know that the doctor has unwittingly created a race of killer flies, and they are hungry for blood.”

The year’s shortest month gets the biggest bang as Severin Films today announced their February 27th releases featuring uncensored 4K restorations of the infamous 1960’s western ‘roughies’ from the depraved minds of exploitation legends Bob Cresse and Lee Frost, Hot Spur and Scavengers.
‘“The Kings of esoteric boutique companies” (Video WatchBlog) are also proud to release – because Severin co-founder/president David Gregory considers it one of the best films he saw as a jury member at the FrightFest and Sitges Film Festivals – the North American disc premiere of director/co-writer Andrew Legge’s time-travel mind-bender, Lola.
Previous limited edition title Spider Labyrinth also enters wide release.

Having struck gold with shockumentaries like Ecco and Mondo Bizarro, producer Bob Cresse and writer/director Lee Frost applied their distinctive sleaze aesthetic to a revenge western they advertised as “91 minutes of Freudian fury!

It is an understatement to say that Bruce Lee left a massive impact through his short filmography. After being denied a lead role by the Shaw Brothers studio, Lee signed onto an upstart company called Golden Harvest whose subsequent films made him into an international star. As his tragic death came on the cusp of kung-fu movies being introduced to the global market, a question lingered about who would replace Lee.
Director David Gregory has crafted a comprehensive exploration of what followed Lee’s passing; a sub-genre named Bruceploitation which focused on casting Bruce Lee lookalikes to star in imitation martial arts films. The resulting cash-in features were made to exploit the deceased star’s international popularity during a time when intellectual property laws were less strict, with even Golden Harvest joining in with Game of Death, an unfinished feature from Lee that was stitched together for a release with a body double,...

Whether you’ve heard the term or not, chances are you’ve seen an exploitation film somewhere in the wild. From sharksploitation megahits like Sharknado, to culture-defining classics like ozploitation’s original Mad Max, or carsploitation’s Death Race 2000, the quality of these carefully marketed mockbusters – built entirely around audience trends with huge, eye-catchingly stupid titles – has always been up for debate. But it’s rare there’s a moral dimension too; after all, no one owns the copyright on cars or sharks or post-apocalyptic bikers. It’s a little different when the genre being exploited though, is an actual person.
Bruce Lee is arguably the most famous and accomplished martial arts performer that’s ever lived. Despite a tragically truncated filmography, cut short at just four features, by his sudden death in 1973, he had co-birthed the entire kung-fu genre, which continues to live and thrive half a century on.

Western films have been a staple of American cinema for practically as long as movies have been made.
Movies in the Western genre are set in the American West, typically between the 1850s to the end of the 19th century. While it has been a stable genre — no pun intended! — it has also been the starting ground for several hybrid genres like Western comedies, Western musicals and horror Westerns.
No other genre’s history goes back quite as far as that of Westerns. According to documentarian David Gregory, “It has been estimated that up to 40 percent of all films made before 1960 were Westerns.”
Although the category reached its greatest popularity in the early and middle decades of the 20th century, with several becoming cult classics, films continued to be made even through droughts for Westerns in the late ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s. Actors have also made their name starring in Western films,...

Average fans of A Christmas Story likely don’t know that director Bob Clark had once made creepy horror pictures with Alan Ormsby, but this independent shock effort of the early ’70s still casts a spell of dread. Although Vietnam is never mentioned, the war’s shadow strikes deep into the heart of a small-town family. John Marley and Lynn Carlin lead a fine cast.

Recognizing that it’s more than likely an unpopular opinion, I need to come clean and confess that I prefer Tobe Hooper’s 1986 sequel, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2, to its predecessor, which I’m also quick to point out is an unparalleled masterpiece of the genre. This has everything to do with personal taste. Tobe Hooper is one of my favorite filmmakers of all-time, and while I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve seen his 1974 classic, I probably revisit Part 2 every year. It’s one of my very favorite horror movies.
The third film in a trilogy Hooper made for Cannon Films in the 1980s (the other two being the brilliantly bonkers Lifeforce and Hooper’s remake of Invaders From Mars, released just a couple of months before TCM2 in ’86), The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2 was the movie the director had to...

While these films are very different in tone and subject, and the filmmakers themselves are also very different in terms of output, the films and releases are indicative of the fact that there are still people out there who want to see what these gentlemen have to say.Read further for more details and thoughts on Joe Dante's Burying the Ex and David Gregory's Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley's Island of Dr. Moreau on Blu-ray....

July 14th may not have a lot of genre-related titles arriving on DVD and Blu-ray, but the films making their home entertainment debuts this week are a rather stellar bunch nonetheless. David Gregory's hugely entertaining doc, Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley's Island of Dr. Moreau, will be playing a limited Us theatrical run this month and next, with more dates on the way. Anyone who has seen The Island of Dr. Moreau knows what a screaming Wtf-fest that movie is. Started by director Richard Stanley and ended by John Frankenheimer, Moreau features Marlon Brando and Val Kilmer playing God onscreen. What most didn't know at the time of this 1996 release is that they essentially played God off-screen, too, and had a hand in getting Stanley fired from the film; particularly Kilmer. Nearly 20 years have passed since that film's release, and now we're getting the lurid and downright bizarre tales of behind-the-scenes shenanigans from those who worked...

Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley's Island of Dr. Moreau is a tale of madness. Not madness attributed to one particular person (although you could point a few fingers to an individual or two, in this case). It's about the madness of film production, how things can spiral out of control and easily discard a director's singular vision in the process. Here, David Gregory - of Severin Films - hasn't necessarily crafted an uplifting piece of work like, say, this year's Jodorowsky's Dune, another "doomed project" doc but one that embraces the spirit of creativity and drive in the face of failure. Rather, Gregory tells a deeply fascinating and frustrating story from the Hollywood trenches that you occasionally can't help but laugh and shake your head.

One of the oddest tales this writer has ever reported on involves 1996’s box-office bomb The Island of Dr. Moreau, the third big-screen adaptation of H.G. Wells’ novel about a scientist who tries to turn animals into people. The movie was a passion project of director Richard Stanley who had made a splash with his debut movie, the sci-fi action film Hardware, and who assembled a remarkable cast for his Moreau, which included Val Kilmer, Marlon Brando, David Thewlis, Fairuza Balk, and Ron Perlman. After just a few days of principal photography, he was fired from the film and ultimately...

When I learned David Gregory (Theatre Bizarre, Godfathers of Mondo) had embarked on a documentary that explored Richard Stanley's time developing the '90s version of The Island of Dr. Moreau, it instantly skyrocketed to the top of my must-see list. Growing up, I remember reading within the pages of Fangoria about the turmoil Stanley went through. And, as a wannabe filmmaker at the time, I looked at Stanley as this champion - someone fighting the good fight against the studio system to see his film come to fruition. I'm glad to see his story is now being told.

A true grindhouse maverick who hates happy endings, Jim VanBebber has made a name for himself in the world of low-budget, independent exploitation cinema as a writer/director and sometimes actor.
Since his first feature, Deadbeat at Dawn (1988), his gritty, outlaw style of filmmaking has generated films that are unapologetic in their realism and singular in their vision.
In 2004 VanBebber took on Charlie Manson. Shot over four years, The Manson Family is a documentary-style (though semi-fictional) look at the Manson cult filled with lurid sex, shocking violence and murderous flower power. For its 10th anniversary The Manson Family is being unleashed nationwide complete with VanBebber's Kickstarter-fueled short Gator Green (get theater listings here). A special edition Blu-ray release will follow on May 7th by Severin Films, which will include the short and a documentary on the making of The Manson Family, entitled The VanBebber Family.

Fifteen years after co-producing and directing the British Victorian-era war classic Zulu, Cy Endfield brought an epic prequel to the story to the screen with Zulu Dawn. Unlike the original film, however, this 1979 release suffered from a bungled and scatter shot North American release that ensured that very few Yanks or Canadians ever had the opportunity to see the film in theaters. Botched release notwithstanding, the movie is in many ways as good as its predecessor, even if the screenplay falls short on presenting the main characters in a fully developed way. The story pertains to the greatest British military defeat of its era as the Victorian penchant for colonialism extended into South Africa. Initially the indigenous Zulu tribes had a cordial relationship with the British, but a foolish change in political strategy saw increasing incursions onto Zulu territory. The Zulu king went to great lengths to...

Writer, journalist and Fangoria magazine editor Chris Alexander is cutting his teeth in the director's chair.
His feature film debut for Autonomy Pictures with Blood for Irina - a psychological, experimental vampire tale - is complete. Alexander approached Autonomy Pictures with a micro-budget proposal, the desire to make a personal horror film, a fever dream inspired by Herzog, Rollin and Franco.
The film was shot in five days at a crumbling 70 year old waterfront motel set for demolition in Toronto, Canada. Autonomy Pictures executive producers Derek Curl (House of the Devil), David Gregory (The Theatre Bizarre) and Lewis Tice of Danger After Dark, already impressed with Alexander’s revitalization of Fangoria since taking over as editor-in-chief, were excited to see what he would do with a genre-based underground concept, budget and schedule.
The film is currently in post-production and will hit film festivals later this year. You'll find a teaser trailer inside.

Adam Rehmeier's The Bunny Game gained notoriety last fall by being one of the recent victims of a BBFC ban. The film was refused certification by the board, who called it, "unacceptable to the public". While the film remains unreleasable in the UK, fledgling Us distributor Autonomy Pictures have decided to make this their first foray into the home video market. Autonomy Pictures is made up of three home video veterans with lots of experience in controversial films. Lewis Tice of Danger After Dark, David Gregory of Severin Films, and Derek Curl of Tla Releasing, have gotten into the home video game in an interesting way here, and I wish them the best. *full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by Image Entertainment. Directors: Douglas Buck, Buddy Giovinazzo, David Gregory, Karim Hussain, Jeremy Kasten, Tom Savini and Richard Stanley. Cast: Guilford Adams, Elissa Dowling, James Gill, Lindsay Goranson, Udo Kier, Tom Savini and Debbie Rochon. Moody and atmospheric, The Theatre Bizarre is an anthology collection of shorts that journeys through Jacobean style surrealist fringe theatre. This opening narrative may not have the same circus charm as Labyrinth in "Manie Manie" (aka "Neo Tokyo"), an animated product from Japan, but the similar approach is certainly noticeable. Both products convey a sense of unworldliness, and thankfully there is a segment that explores the world through the eyes of a young child, a girl. While the live-action does not have the budget to mimic the grandiose vision that the animated masterpiece offered, the shadow play and decayed sets of the stitching narrative certainly works to draw.

The company, spearheaded by Curl, David Gregory (Severin Films) and Lewis Tice (Danger After Dark) has acquired all U.S. rights to Adam Rehmeier's The Bunny Game, a shockingly explicit cinematic experience about the abduction of a prostitute and the terror she is subjected to at the hands of her captive. Featuring a fearless performance by actress Rodleen Getsic, who also co-wrote the film with Rehmeir, based on her own experiences, The Bunny Game was recently banned in the UK but will be released in the Us uncut in July 2012.
