Updated, with Clinton statement and details on arrangements: David Mixner, the activist and political strategist who lobbied — and protested — political figures in the movement for LGBTQ equality, died on Monday. He was 77.
Mixner suffered from complications from long Covid, a friend, Steven Guy, told The New York Times.
Mixner also was a playwright, having recounted his decades of activism in a series of plays including Oh Hell No!, which he performed in New York, Los Angeles and other cities in 2014, 2015 and 2016, and later 1969 and Who Fell Into the Outhouse? The stagings, benefitting major LGBTQ organizations, featured Mixner recalling his early years of rural poverty, his involvement in protests of the Vietnam war, his experiences coming out, living through the AIDS crisis and his support and break with longtime friend Bill Clinton when the then-president failed to end a prohibition on gays and lesbians in the military.

Variety‘s team of writers, editors, photographers and designers has been nominated for outstanding magazine overall coverage at the forthcoming 31st GLAAD Media Awards.
Announced Wednesday, the annual ceremony honors fair, accurate and inclusive representations of Lgbtq people and issues in filmed content and journalism across platforms and languages. Variety won the outstanding magazine prize in 2019 for its groundbreaking Trans Hollywood issue.
“I am so proud that we received this important nomination from GLAAD,” said Variety editor-in-chief Claudia Eller. “Covering the Lgbtq community all year round is among our biggest editorial priorities, as is publishing our annual branded Pride Issue. Thank you so much for this recognition.”
The 2020 nomination comes on the heels of the magazine’s inaugural Power of Pride issue, a deeply reported look at the state of pride in entertainment media, and how figures essential to Variety‘s coverage amplify queer voices globally. Flagship cover stars and...

Swimming with polar bears, yoga poses for tops, Ninth Circuit denies en banc for SmithKline Beecham v. Abbott Laboratories
Ansel Elgort is a busy man. Not only is he being tapped to play Van Cliburn, he’s now on the shortlist for the lead in the remake of WarGames, in the Matthew Broderick role. I’m not sure that this is a movie that needs to be remade, but I can see him stepping into Broderick’s role quite easily.
I hate buying blades for my razors. Why do they cost so much? And you need a couple at a time, one for your face, and one for…other places. And why do some last months and others last three days? At $4/each, you’d think we could get some quality control. This hack supposedly makes them last months and months though.

Debbie Harry has confirmed that she likes men and women. The blond legend says that while most of her lasting relationships have been with men, the rumors of her liking women is true. “Yeah. Let’s say women are more sensual.”
Vitaly Milonov, who wrote St. Petersburg’s original gay propaganda law, is now calling for the formation of a “morality police” that would regulate homosexuality, gambling and other violations of “traditional values.” Which sounds a lot like what they have in nations like Saudi Arabia.
Captain American: The Winter Soldier broke all April box office records, pulling in $96.2 million. Counting the overseas haul for two weeks, the film has grossed $303 million since opening.

Elaine Stritch and Kylie discuss being gay icons, Jupiter Ascending gives us an effete villain, Frank Ocean back in studio
Frank Ocean is back in the studio recording his second album, nearly two years after he released Channel Orange, so it’s more than time for new music.
Inspired by the new Terrance McNally play Mothers and Sons, my friend David Mixner is afraid too much of Lgbt history is being lost. Even with his own papers at Yale and two books out (both of which I’m proud to own autographed copies of), David worries that an oral history would fill in the gaps that are being lost from the early days. “The struggle to preserve our history over the years has faced enormous barriers. Members of the gay community in the early years of our struggle for liberation were reluctant to keep records, papers, and videos for fear of discovery.

Air Force troops do drag show in Okinawa, ending the stigma of HIV inside the gay community, Will Smith a Razzie favorite
Alan Cumming has acquired a script from activist and my friend David Mixner and Rich Burns. Dunes of Overveen is the “true life story of Willem Arondeus and the bloody underground uprising of artists in Amsterdam during WWII against occupying Nazi forces.”
While Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell has been gone for a few years, and we’ve seen weddings on bases and tearful homecomings, Lgb troops at Kadena Air Base in Okinawa recently performed in drag to support their new chapter of OutServe-sldn. “We didn’t think there was much of a desire for an event like this on the island but it has actually blown up. We ended up selling 400 tickets in 10 days.”
Jennifer Hudson says that she really got her start performing in gay bars.

Dave Kopay wasn’t the only gay Washington Redskins player in the seventies. There was also the great Jerry Smith. In his career Smith caught 421 passes and had 60 touchdowns, a record for tight ends. He played with the Redskins from 1965 to 1977 and according to friend David Mixner (recently interviewed by USA Today) he lived in constant fear of being outed. He was “really alone and terrified that he was gonna lose everything.”
If you aren’t familiar with Smith, NFL Network has you covered this month. The Emmy-nominated series, A Football Life, on NFL Network has a documentary about him. (It premiered on the network last night but will reair all this month, and or you can watch it online here.)

He said, if the Roberts Court does not strike down Doma, the decision will be viewed by future generations as infamously as Americans view the Court's decisions on Dred Scott v. Sandford or Plessy v. And they're getting their own spinoff, in which we learn that the Minions have always been around, working for supervillains, but ultimately undoing them all with their ineptitude. They set out to find a new villain and end up with Scarlett Overkill, voiced by Sandra Bullock. Scarlett is described as having Audrey Hepburn style and the ambition to become the world's first female supervillain.
The Pentagon officially announced they will be extending some benefits to same-sex couples as allowed by Doma, including ID cards and joint postings. Still, it falls short of full equality, even under Doma. Interestingly, the changes are set to be implemented between August 31 and October 1, which could be two months after Doma is no longer a consideration.

We wondered in Briefs how long it would take San Francisco 49er's cornerback Chris Culliver to issue a non-apology, and it was mere hours. Honestly, it's not a bad apology, until his media relations rep adds "Chris is very apologetic for any harm caused to anyone. His intent was not that at all. He is one who celebrates the differences of others. All of this was just a big mistake. It was interpreted wrong." Meanwhile, the 49er's have issued a statement condemning the remarks and saying they've spoken with Culliver.
Meanwhile, 49ers like Delaine Walker and Brian Jennings expressed support for former teammate Kwame Harris, who was arrested following an altercation with his ex-boyfriend, and they have no issue with him being gay. "That's him. If that's what he's into, that's what he's into. I can't judge a person for how he feels. Things happen. He was a great player.

Well, this is unpleasant. Glee's Mark Salling is being sued by an ex-girlfriend for sexual battery. She says she insisted on condoms for their private moments, but he didn't comply. Then when she went to confront him, she found him in bed with someone else, leading to a push and a police report.

George Clooney is a bit of joker, so I'm just going to assume what he told Italy's Max was his version of humor. “I never fixed my eyes, but I spent more money to stretch the skin of my testicles. I did not like the wrinkles. It’s a new technique, many people in Hollywood have done it. It’s called ball ironing.” It's actually called a scrotal lift, and is a real thing.

General Hospital writer Ron Carlivati wrote into Towleroad about the reaction that the new gay character on his show got, and he's not terribly happy people are judging him and the character from one outing. "I am frankly appalled by the intolerance and internalized homophobia expressed in this post and in the majority of its comments. During my career, I have brought no fewer than six gay characters to daytime television: male, female, Black, White, Hispanic...all shapes and sizes. I have written coming out stories, gay bashing stories, gay marriage stories, gay parenting stories and gay love stories. I wrote the first love scene between two gay men that ever aired on daytime TV. I won a Gladd award for these stories. What exactly is it about this character that is causing such righteous indignation?" There's a lot more over at Andy's place. Fyi, there's a minor spoiler over there,...

The covers, when placed together, depict a wedding scene, a tribute to the momentous marriage equality win in New York this summer, featuring the gender-bending Pejic, who has been named Out's "Stylemaker of the Year," as a blushing bride with the other cover stars looking on.
Griffin, the "Entertainer of the Year," told Out that her affinity for the Lgbt community started in school. "I was beyond a nerd. I was that girl who went to the dance with a gay guy, but he didn't know he was gay yet. I asked four guys to the Sadie Hawkins dance,...

Ricky Martin has been granted Spanish citizenship in what is believed to be an effort to marry his boyfriend of many years.
Lionsgate is shopping an animated series of Harold and Kumar around to cable networks, with interest from Comedy Central. No word on whether it would have an animated Neil Patrick Harris, or at least a giant Claymation penis.
Meanwhile, the writers behind Smurfs are taking on a new animated version of Popeye for Sony. I hear a possible plotline has Bluto contaminating the spinach with e. coli.
Zachary Sire has a point about using Kim Kardashian's disaster of a marriage to advocate for marriage equality, because we're better than that. "Because saying that you are somehow better and that you take marriage more seriously than someone who became famous for getting pissed on in a sex tape is not saying much.”

Olivia Munn says that she's front and center to watch her hot costars shake their money makers on the set of Magic Mike. And in spite of being at the elegant Princess Grace Gala, she says "Like, right now, I'm mad. I'm furious that I'm not there watching Matt Bomer shake it, because he can shake it, probably better than most people in the world."
CBS has won an appeal about the "wardrobe malfunction" Janet Jackson had at the 2004 Super Bowl. I know I'm exaggerating, but does anyone else wonder if the government could save a ton of money by not fighting these stupid morality battles in court for seven years and counting? And right on cue, the Parents Television Council is outraged.
Speaking of our government, they passed a bill in the House today affirming that "In God We Trust" is the motto of the United States. I'm surprised...
