Katie Stern is that inexplicable combination of inviting, accessible, and tough as nails. When I went to photograph her at the color correction of the film she produced, Listen Up Philip, she was wearing all black, despite my suggesting filmmakers wear a splash of color. “It’s just what I’m used to wearing,” she says, a true New Yorker. “But I did wear lipstick – and that’s not normal for me.” In the color correction suite, Stern was the only woman in a small sea of men, including the film’s director, Alex Ross Perry. The film was on the big screen, […]...

Ahead of its debut at Sundance in just a few days’ time, the teaser trailer has landed for Listen Up Philip, giving an intriguing first look at the upcoming drama.
Jason Schwartzman leads a stellar ensemble as the eponymous Philip, an author waiting for the publication of his second novel.
Anger rages in Philip as he awaits the publication of his sure-to-succeed second novel. He feels pushed out of his adopted home city by the constant crowds and noise, a deteriorating relationship with his photographer girlfriend Ashley, and his own indifference to promoting the novel. When Philip’s idol, Ike Zimmerman, offers his isolated summer home as a refuge, he finally gets the peace and quiet to focus on his favorite subject—himself.
Elisabeth Moss stars opposite as his photographer girlfriend, with Krysten Ritter, Jonathan Pryce, Josephine de La Baume, Jess Weixler, Dree Hemingway, Keith Poulson, Kate Lyn Sheil, and...

Eric Lavallee: Name me three of your favorite “2013 discoveries”…
Kelly Williams: Ola Podrida’s album “Ghosts Go Blind”. The Documentary – Deceptive Practice: The Mysteries and Mentors of Ricky Jay. Walt Roberts – Hellion & Parkland actor / World-Class Fiddle Player.
Lavallee: I believe that this is your third time producing a Kat Candler film (Hellion follows Hellion the short, and Black Metal). How did that professional relationship begin and could you discuss the creative dynamic between the two of you.
Williams: Even though we both live in Austin, we actually met through a mutual friend, Zack Phillips, at Sundance in 2001. We became friends over the years. In 2009, I programmed her short film, Love Bug, at the Austin Film Festival where I was a film programmer, but we didn’t actually work together until we made the Hellion short in the summer of 2011. Making that short, it became pretty obvious that we wanted to work together more.

Eric Lavallee: Name me three of your favorite “2013 discoveries”… Katie Stern: One of my favorite movies of the year was Spring Breakers, my favorite book was Kate Bornstein’s A Queer and Pleasant Danger, I finally saw and enjoyed Me at the Zoo, loved the Claes Oldenburg exhibit at MoMA, and felt sadly, underwhelmed by the Depeche Mode album (Delta Machine).
Lavallee: The underrated/under the radar Francine was your first fiction feature as a producer. I’d like to know what lessons carried over from making a miniscule film and how did the project come to you?
Stern: Francine was a true labor of love. I met Brian M. Cassidy and Melanie Shatzky through Washington Square Films (where we represent them as commercial directors) and we instantly became friends. When they told me about the idea for the film, I was immediately intrigued. The world they described (and ultimately,...

Eric Lavallee: Name me three of your favorite “2013 discoveries”…
Nathan Zellner: Computer Chess, more Claire Denis, MySpace.
Lavallee: Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter is based on urban legend… could you detail how you guys first heard of it, how it may have festered on beyond an anecdote, and then how you set out to add descriptive detail and build a protag and story arch.
Zellner: We first heard of the story right when it happened in 2001. There was little information available at the time and it evolved into an urban legend. We were so captivated by someone embarking on an antiquated treasure hunt in modern-day that we started writing the script, filling in the gaps of who she was and how she set out on her journey, and building the story from there.
Lavallee: In the Zellner filmography, Rinko Kikuchi is perhaps the biggest int. talent you’ve had board a project.

This Thursday, the Sundance Film Festival celebrates its 30th anniversary and since we’ve covered about 1/3rd of the event and have fond memories of each edition, we figured why not commemorate some of the personalities that will make up this year’s crop. Welcome to our Sundance “Trading Cards” series.
Profiling the misfits, the filmmakers and the supporting players both in front of and behind the camera, we asked each person (curiously vast bunch from grade school aged vets to pension aged newbies) what their “three favorite 2013 discoveries”. These could either be old classics, obscure items from the past, present or 2013 fresh as in favorite album, song, recording artist, painter, sculptor, author, book, narrative or docu film, video game, television series, science, technology, apps, city, country or news headline. And like any given sport cards features, we included their vitals and favorite fest(s).
Enjoy the series and collect the entire set!

Factory 25 has acquired North American rights to the Melissa Leo drama “Francine” and will co-release the film on VOD November 1. The Film Sales Company first opens the film theatrically at MoMa September 12, followed by other theatrical showings in the fall and a DVD release in the spring. “Francine” stars Oscar winner Leo (“The Fighter”) as a lonely woman who has difficulty adjusting to life in a small town once she’s released from prison after many years. Written and directed by Brian M. Cassidy and Melanie Shatzky, “Francine” has screened at the Berlin, SXSW and BAMcinemaFest festivals. It’s hard to believe that Iffr is already coming to an end. Having now been here for a full and very active week filled with films, parties, new acquaintances…we feel simultaneously exhausted and rejuvenated. It is an honor to bring a film to Rotterdam.
The Patron Saints screened three times at three different venues. At the start of our first screening, there was a technical issue that threw us into a bit of a panic. It was really our fault for not showing up a few minutes early to do a tech check, but… live and learn. To our great relief the issue was only temporary and from that point on everything looked and sounded excellent. We felt very fortunate to have such engaged audiences and got the feeling they made a real commitment towards seeing the film, which is a stark and somewhat confrontational portrait of life in a nursing home.

#80. Francine - Brian M. Cassidy and Melanie Shatzky And for my final pick, I'm thinking that the husband-and-wife filmmaker team of Melanie Shatzky and Brian M. Cassidy will lock up a U.S Dramatic Comp section slot for their feature (fiction) debut. Francine should be among the buzz titles of the fest for what Melissa Leo (who plays the titular lead) will bring to the role, but my high expectations for the title have plenty more to do with my viewing of the craft in the stunning Tiff preemed The Patron Saints (here's our 4-star review and interview). The pair were previously at Sundance back in 2007 with their docu short, God Provides. Gist: Francine (Melissa Leo), is a woman struggling to find her place in a downtrodden lakeside town after leaving behind a life in prison. Taking a series of jobs working with animals, Francine turns away those who take...
