Dave Kopay wasn’t the only gay Washington Redskins player in the seventies. There was also the great Jerry Smith. In his career Smith caught 421 passes and had 60 touchdowns, a record for tight ends. He played with the Redskins from 1965 to 1977 and according to friend David Mixner (recently interviewed by USA Today) he lived in constant fear of being outed. He was “really alone and terrified that he was gonna lose everything.”
If you aren’t familiar with Smith, NFL Network has you covered this month. The Emmy-nominated series, A Football Life, on NFL Network has a documentary about him. (It premiered on the network last night but will reair all this month, and or you can watch it online here.)

Monday was National Coming Out Day. The Proposition 8 lawsuit sits in waiting, as the case for same-sex marriage in California has a pending hearing at a federal court of appeals before possibly moving on to the Supreme Court. The U.S. military's "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy is its own political firestorm at the moment and is on the cusp of abolishment. New York gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino mouths off that "your children" would be much better off if they are not "brainwashed into thinking that homosexuality is an equally valid and successful option." A sobering rash of recent suicides among youngsters reminds us that bullying, lack of tolerance, and the notion that being gay is bad are still far too prevalent in our society.
Thus, it seems an appropriate time to highlight that same lack of tolerance that has dismayingly infected the world of major league sports. Why should it matter where the NBA,...

The weather's crap, but there's a frickin' gay pride parade on DVD this week, with three high-profile queer-inclusive titles making their home video premiere.
Read on for more!
The documentary The Butch Factor explores masculinity among gay men, by interviewing rodeo riders, pro football veteran David Kopay and cops, asking questions about what it means to be a gay man, societal phobias about effeminacy and the stereotypes that continue to exist decades after the Stonewall riots. Gay men of all stripes should find plenty of fodder for discussion here.
Speaking of gay men in uniform, Robert Altman's Streamers—about Vietnam-bound soldiers, one of whom (Mitchell Lichtenstein) does everything but wear a big scarlet "H" on his chest—finally makes its DVD debut this week. It's one of Altman's filmed plays (coming after the gay-fave Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean and before the Nixon...
