Ivan Cornejo didn’t expect to make it quite this big. He was just 14 years when he started uploading videos of himself playing guitar on TikTok, drawing fans in with his melancholy melodies and covers. He was shy about singing, but he finally worked himself up to it a few years later and started sharing songs he’d written that showed off his brooding lyricism. That unique sound led to his breakout hit, 2021’s “Esta Dañada” that was so popular, urbano star Jhay Cortez jumped on the remix.

It's been over a year since Bad Bunny released his fourth solo album, "Un Verano Sin Ti," an album dedicated to summer that features Caribbean sounds and breezy beach vibes, and yet it has continued to break records. Not only was it the first Spanish-language album to ever receive a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year - though it lost to Harry Styles's "Harry's House" - it's also broken numerous streaming records. Last year, it generated more than 4 billion US streams across several platforms, and it recently became the most streamed album in Spotify history.
While Bad Bunny, born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, was already playing a significant role in pushing reggaetón and Latin trap forward, the success of "Un Verano Sin Ti" really speaks to the dominance Latin music is having in the mainstream. Spanish-language urbano music has gone global and it's not going away anytime soon.

Coachella’s second weekend has been chock full of surprise guest appearances, and Wet Leg’s Friday set was no exception as the Isle of White duo got a boisterous, surprise assist from Dave Grohl.
The band was performing “Ur Mum” — during Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers’ live performances, the song always prompts cathartic, audience-assisted screams — when Grohl snuck onstage.
“Ok Coachella Weekend Two, we’ve all been practicing our longest and loudest scream,” Teasdale said as she encouraged the crowd to get ready to let it all out. “Are you all ready?...

Last week, Bad Bunny became the first Latin artist to headline Coachella. During his Weekend 2 set, the Puerto Rican rapper kept the celebration going, enlisting several Puerto Rican and Mexican artists to honor their Latin heritage.
After welcoming Mexican band Grupo Frontera, Bad Bunny left the stage to allow the group to perform “un x100to,” “No Se Va,” and “Bebe Dame.” The rapper returned to the stage in full ranchero attire to sing his part of the first track, a collaboration between the artists they just unveiled last week.
From there, Puerto Rican rapper Ñengo Flow and reggaeton duo Jowell & Randy joined Bad Bunny for “Safaera,” and rapper Jhayco came out to perform “Dákiti,” “Tarot,” and his own song “No Me Conoce.” The legendary musician José Feliciano also made an appearance, joining Bad Bunny for “La Canción” and “Yonaguni.”

Bad Bunny was his own opening act — in a way — before his Friday night headlining gig at Coachella as the singer made a surprise appearance during Gorillaz’ set to perform their collaboration “Tormenta” together for the first time.

Bad Bunny took Coachella’s main stage on Friday night, becoming the first Latin artist to headline the music festival.
From the moment the gates opened, the fervor for Bad Bunny was noticeable. His fans showed up in droves in the early hours of the day, and plenty of Bad Bunny merch was donned (there was even a fan walking around with a comically supersized Benito head).
When the Puerto Rican artist finally took shortly after 11:30 p.m. local time, it was evident that this was no ordinary performance for him. A pre-show film highlighted Coachella lineups over the years, and how multiple undercard acts have gone on to headline — Bad Bunny included. He then arrived stage elevated above the sea of fans and launched into Un Verano Sin Ti favorite “Tití Me Preguntó”
From then on out, Bad Bunny burned through hit after hit in a memorable evening of Latin trap and pop.

Ivan Cornejo is only 18, but he’s already experienced major success with his music. Last year, his sulking sad sierreño ballad “Está Dañada” went completely viral, catching the attention of the entire Latin industry — including rapper Jhay Cortez, who hopped on a remix of the track. Since then, Cornejo’s moody sound — rooted in acoustic guitars and Mexican traditions — has kept attracting listeners, especially as he’s continued to found new maturity in his songwriting and vocal delivery.

He’d burst onto the music scene just a few years before and had attracted fans at breakneck speed, becoming known across the industry for his dangerous, unapologetically explicit rhymes about street life, delivered in his distinct, throaty baritone. His hit “Si Pepe” had ricocheted across the internet, gathering 12 million views, and Billboard...

Back in 2020, the superproducer Tainy released Club Dieciseis, a crisp compilation full of forward-thinking reggaeton experiments. Now, another artist is picking up where he left off: Rising star Jota Rosa, a triple-threat who writes, produces and performs, is getting ready to drop Club Dieciseis 2, a follow-up to Tainy’s original project and his solo debut album. The first cut is “Como Ñengo,” featuring Feid and Kris Floyd, a track that shows he’s also got a knack for futuristic, down-tempo sounds.

Exactly how much bigger can reggaeton get? This is a perpetually grating question that’s followed the genre around as it’s skyrocketed to the very center of the mainstream over the last few years and become one of the most omnipresent sounds on the planet. To naysayers, the music represents an annoyingly large bubble that’ll pop and fizzle out any day now, while fans and artists are hell-bent on proving that there’s limitless space for it to keep growing. Unfortunately, certain acts — driven by the popularity, profitability,...

Colombian singer-songwriter Camilo dominated the announcement of the 2021 Latin Grammy Awards nominations, garnering 10, including nods in all three top categories — album of the year (for “Mis Manos”), record of the year (for “Vida de Rico” and “Amen”) and song of the year (for “Vida de Rico” and “Dios Así Lo Quiso”).
Also faring well with multiple nods were Dominican artist Juan Luis Guerra with six, Spanish rapper C. Tangana with five and Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny with four.
Most of these top-nominated artists have enjoyed multiple trips to the podium in previous years— especially Guerra, a 20-time Latin Grammy winner. C. Tangana and Bad Bunny have won twice before. But with his staggering 10 nominations this year, Camilo comes into the ceremony only ever having won once before, for last year’s best pop song (his acceptance appearance is pictured above).
The 22nd annual show airs on Univision Nov. 18 live at 8 p.

A week after Kanye West set a new high-water mark for the biggest album debut of 2021 on the Rolling Stone Top 200 Albums chart with Donda, Drake obliterated that record with Certified Lover Boy. West launched with 313,000 album-equivalent units. Drake earned close to double that total, more than 595,000 album-equivalent units, even though Certified Lover Boy had fewer songs than Donda.
The bulk of Drake’s first-week total came from streaming services: The 21 tracks on Certified Lover Boy collectively picked up more than 680 million plays. In addition, Drake’s set sold more...

Halsey‘s concept album “If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power” dropped on August 27. It’s the fourth studio album for the 26-year-old singer-songwriter, and it comes just a year-and-a-half after her previous release, 2020’s critically acclaimed “Manic.” Will this collection, inspired by her recent experience of pregnancy and childbirth, get her back to the top of the Billboard 200 albums chart? It would be her second album to do so.
Her debut album “Badlands” was released in 2015 and debuted at number-two with 115,000 album units, which are calculated by combining album sales, track sales, and online streams. Her followup, 2017’s “Hopeless Fountain Kingdom,” launched at number-one with 106,000 units. Then came “Manic,” which missed the number-one spot, launching in the runner-up position, but it vastly outperformed her previous albums in its first week, achieving 239,000 units. She only felt short of the top spot because she was up against Eminem, whose “Music...

Drop a pin almost anywhere in reggaeton history and chances are you’ll land on some version of Nicky Jam, one of the genre’s most enduring elder statesmen and a character who’s been around for nearly every chapter of the genre’s unfolding narrative.
You’ll find him during Puerto Rico’s underground perreo days in the early Nineties, a 14-year-old kid with a local EP that he recorded after impressing a customer who’d seen him freestyling at the grocery store where he worked. He’s there in the late Nineties,...

Bad Bunny is arguably the biggest Latin crossover star of the last decade, with Spanish-language albums and Spanish-language singles consistently in the top 10 or topping the charts. So it’s pretty surprising that he hasn’t won Best Latin at the MTV Video Music Awards yet, especially since the VMAs are decided by music fans and Bad Bunny has fans in droves. But this year he could finally take home a moon person. And he has two chances to do so.
He’s nominated this year for two collaborations: “Dakiti” with Jhay Cortez and “Un Dia (One Day)” with J Balvin, Dua Lipa, and Tainy. According to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, “Dakiti” will be his winner, with 13 of our Top 24 Users currently betting on that video, and for good reason. It’s by far the highest-charting hit in the category, reaching number-five on the Billboard Hot 100, and as mentioned above,...

The 2021 MTV Video Music Awards nominations recently dropped, so let’s see who can pick up some awards in the genre categories. I covered pop, hip-hop, rock, and alternative in an earlier article, so I’ll move on to the next four. Refresh your memory on all the nominees here.
Best Latin
While I could genuinely see any of the nominees winning, my gut tells me that one of the three crossover hits will win. “Un Día (One Day)” by J Balvin, Dua Lipa, Bad Bunny and Tainy could win based on name-recognition alone, getting votes from fans of three big Latin stars plus Dua Lipa. Still, Bunny’s own “Dakiti” featuring Jhay Cortez was undoubtedly the biggest hit among the nominees here, reaching the top five on Billboard’s Hot 100, so that could end up winning.

With the Grammys eligibility period nearing its August 31 deadline, let’s take a fresh look at the contenders for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, which could be even more competitive than Best Pop Solo Performance given all the collaborations that are eligible to make the cut.
This category has numerous contenders who could easily get in. The locks — if you can call anything a lock at the Grammys — seem to be three. First, “Levitating” by Dua Lipa and DaBaby, which is the biggest hit eligible and is a remix of a song off of Lipa’s already-Grammy-winning album “Future Nostalgia“; its only problem might be DaBaby’s recent controversy concerning his homophobic remarks and stigmatizing of HIV/AIDS, which has already cost him a number of gigs but so far hasn’t knocked the remix off the charts.
