Updated with complete winners list: Despite being up for four acting category awards, The Crown‘s final season left the BAFTA TV Awards empty handed tonight in London.
Elizabeth Debicki, Lesley Manville, Salim Daw and Dominic West were all snubbed, as the the likes of Matthew Macfadyen, Jasmine Jobson, Timothy Spall and Sarah Lancashire all triumphed and the Netflix show went out quietly.
There was also a major surprise in the International category, where little-known French drama Class Act beat the likes of Beef, The Bear and The Last of Us to win the prize. Among the most shocked was the show’s star Laurent Lafitte, who urged the audience to find and watch his show — to the amusement of the audience.

Michael Douglas is in terrific form as Benjamin Franklin in Apple TV’s new historical limited series “Franklin” but he isn’t the only actor to emerge with awards whispers whizzing through the air. Veteran actor Eddie Marsan features in a key supporting role as John Adams and delivers one of the finest performances of his career while also shining a new light onto a man that many actors have depicted before.
The limited series follows Franklin’s eight years in France as he tried to persuade King Louis XVI (Tom Pezier) to join the colonies’ cause and aid them in the American Revolutionary War. The scenes between Douglas and Marsan are nothing short of spectacular and Marsan nails his performance as Adams, as noted by critics.
Clint Worthington (Roger Ebert) noted: “Marsan’s energy as Adams is decidedly different from Paul Giamatti’s in Ellis’ original 2008 miniseries—“Franklin” feels...

James Clavell‘s 1975 historical novel of the same name is the basis for Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks‘ “Shōgun,” and it makes for exquisite television. Set at the end of the 16th century in Japan, the FX limited series follows several factions in the five Regents all vying for control and power. Intricate world-building and political machinations combine to make “Shōgun” the next “Game of Thrones.” What the two shows also have in common is a collection of superb performances from their extensive casts. Hiroyuki Sanada, Anna Sawai, and Cosmo Jarvis lead the way in the show’s leading performances but several supporting players could also be up for an Emmy nomination, including Takehiro Hira.
Hira plays Ishido Kazunari, a former peasant who has now become a powerful bushō (a warlord). Kazunari takes charge of one of the five Regents and is the main rival of Sanada’s Lord Yoshii Toranaga.

It was first reported in February of 2023 that "Nope," "The Walking Dead" star Steven Yeun was finally joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe in what was described as a "significant mystery role" in "Thunderbolts." Months later it was confirmed that Yeun was going to play Robert Reynolds/The Sentry, a complicated super-figure who gains his powers from the sun and waffles between hero and villain status. The Sentry was the latest antihero figure to join the MCU, and with Yeun's star getting hotter after the explosive success of the Netflix series "Beef," his turn in Marvel's sandbox was one of the most anticipated roles of Phase Six. Unfortunately, at the start of 2024, mumblings started circulating that Yeun was exiting the project. And as was confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter on January 2, the rumors are true.
Important to note that while Yeun's involvement was never outright confirmed by Marvel, it was never denied,...

Netflix has been slowly opening up on its viewership data on many of its titles, but third-party companies like PlumResearch can provide more significant insights into how well shows are doing through different lenses. Below, they put four Netflix shows up against each other.
We’ve featured PlumResearch data before. You may recall that we recently talked about some of the reasons Sweet Magnolias got renewed for a fourth season. We also featured them more recently with their Wrapped feature, allowing you to see what you’ve watched over the past 12 months.
This latest data dump gives us data for four shows from this year, and all have very different fates. One Piece was renewed almost instantaneously, Glamorous was sadly canceled following the end of the strikes, Survival of the Thickest is still awaiting an official renewal, and Beef may be a limited series but may also come back.

“Succession” made sure to make history on it’s way out, earning a record-breaking nine nominations at the 2024 Golden Globes for its farewell season. Those final nominations helped HBO score 17 overall, the most of any network at the 81st ceremony; the network netted 16 nominations and its streaming service Max landed one. It won a neck-and-neck race with Netflix, which earned 15 total, with Apple TV+ just missing out on double digits with nine.
In addition to those nine “Succession” nominations, HBO had success with its other drama series “The Last of Us,” which earned three bids. “The Crown,” “Beef,” and “The Diplomat” led the way for Netflix, which also got a boost by dominating the new Stand-Up Comedian on Television category with five bids out of the six total slots. “Ted Lasso,” “The Morning Show,” and “Lessons in Chemistry” all contributed to the Apple TV+ tally.

The Golden Globes told other shows to “f— off” because “Succession” dominated with a leading nine nominations. Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss Waystar Royco’s victory lap and other snubs and surprises in the TV nominations (watch above; TV categories start at 42:48).
With its nine bids, “Succession” broke the record shared by “The Thorn Birds” (1984) and “L.A Law” (1990) for the most Golden Globe nominations by a show in a single year. The HBO hit, which earned 27 Emmy bids for its fourth and final season, was nominated in every category in which it was eligible, most notably getting in all three of its lead actors — Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Strong — into the Best TV Drama Actor category, just like it did at the Emmys. Can anything stop it from snagging its record-tying third Best Drama Series Globe win?

Taylor Sheridan’s 1923 and Amazon Freevee’s Jury Duty made a welcome showing at the Golden Globe nominations Monday, while the final season of Succession on HBO earned a deserved yet predictable round of nominations.
The Yellowstone prequel — the second created by Sheridan after 1883 — earned nominations in the Best Drama category and the Actress category, with Helen Mirren earning a nod for playing the Dutton matriarch. Other memorable performances in the prequel were overlooked, like Harrison Ford’s turn as Jacob Dutton and the phenomenal Aminah Nieves as Teonna Rainwater, but it was a win for Paramount+ to see one of Sheridan’s joints get some early recognition.
Speaking of which, David Oyelowo earned a nomination for his leading role in Lawmen: Bass Reeves – Sheridan’s new anthology that only dropped last month on Paramount+. He’s competing in the Actor/Limited Series category alongside Matt Bomer (Fellow Travelers), Woody Harrelson...

We’re well into the so-called post-Peak TV era. Tightening budgets and consolidating streaming platforms suggest an uncertain future for the medium. With the exception of new staples like The Last of Us and Poker Face, many of the best television shows of 2023 wrapped things up with their final seasons or had only limited runs. And due to the Hollywood strikes, the TV landscape could look quite different by this time next year.
Yet, Succession and Barry have proven that there remains room for complex narratives skewering American lust for power and unaccountability, while comedies like The Great, I Think You Should Leave, and I’m a Virgo bent the boundaries of the form with gonzo vigor. And new animated shows like Genndy Tartakovsky’s Unicorn: Warriors Eternal and Max’s Scavengers Reign bring a sense of fantastical wonder that’s generally lacking in more terrestrial series. On December 6, the 2023 IndieWire Honors ceremony will celebrate 11 filmmakers, creators, and actors for their achievement in creative independence. We’re showcasing their work with new interviews leading up to the Los Angeles event.
When the time came for Lee Sung Jin to explain the tone of his dark-comedy-rage-drama “Beef” to the creative team, the writer, director, and creator of the series was very scientific.
“I tried my best to use as many words as possible to translate what was in my brain to everybody else, and I actually came up in the beginning with this very silly formula,” Lee told IndieWire over Zoom. “I said the tone of ‘Beef’ is 35 percent Paul Thomas Anderson-slash-‘Sopranos’ comedy, where you’re laughing at the broken psychology of people, plus 35 percent ‘White Lotus’ propulsion -slash-Netflix watercooler moments, plus 30 percent Ingmar Bergman-slash-Hirokazu Koreeda warm, melancholic pathos.”
“And I emailed that to everybody.

While Edebiri, who portrays the young sous chef Sydney Adamu on the show, earned an Emmy nomination for the show’s first season and could still win it when the trophies are handed out in January, she is even more prominent in the show in many of the second season episodes. So the change to lead makes sense.
The switch will also impact her consideration in January for both the Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards, where Ebebiri will compete as a lead comedy actress. She was nominated in supporting for the Critics Choice TV honors this year and won an Independent Spirit Award for supporting performance in a new scripted series.

The cast for the upcoming movie Opus makes it one of next year’s most intriguing films in the horror genre. More here:
A24 has established itself as the destination for smart, modern horror with films like Talk To Me and Midsommar. Talk To Me this year alone has excelled where many higher profile horror movies haven’t.
Nonetheless, the studio’s upcoming project, Opus boasts the kind of ensemble (not to mention that grandiose title) that makes you wonder if this will be the studio’s biggest swing yet.
Let’s start with the new faces.
Ayo Edebiri has joined the cast, fresh off the critical praise for this year’s comedy Bottoms (our review is here) and in the continuing wake of plaudits for her performances in The Bear, one of the most celebrated TV dramas of the last couple of years. Also fresh to the cast is...

Evan Peters and his “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” co-star Niecy Nash-Betts are currently the odds-on favorites to take home the Emmys for Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actor and Best Limited Series/TV Movie Supporting Actress, respectively. If both prevail in January, “Dahmer” will join a very small group of programs that have bagged both prizes.
Since the limited series/TV movie supporting acting categories were created in 1975, only four programs have won both awards. The first to do it was the telefilm “The Promise” (1986), which racked up victories for James Woods in lead and Piper Laurie in supporting. It was followed by another TV movie, 1996’s “Rasputin: Dark Servant of Destiny” (Alan Rickman and Greta Scacchi), and the two-part miniseries “George Wallace” in 1998 (Gary Sinise and Mare Winningham).
Rounding out the quartet is another miniseries, “Angels in America,” which triumphed for Al Pacino in lead and...

Within the past four years alone, the success rate for Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress Emmy nominees who have entered their ceremonies with same-year SAG Award wins under their belts has dropped from 100% to 60%. After being followed by Anya Taylor-Joy (“The Queen’s Gambit”) in 2021, win-lose trendsetter Patricia Arquette might soon be joined by 2023 SAG Award recipient Jessica Chastain (“George & Tammy”), whose Gold Derby Emmy odds are significantly lower than those of her strongest challenger, Ali Wong (“Beef”).
Chastain and Wong represent half of their Emmy lineup’s first-time acting nominee majority, which also includes Dominique Fishback (“Swarm”) and Riley Keough (“Daisy Jones & the Six”). Rounding out the group, which features no former Emmy champions, are category newcomers Lizzy Caplan (“Fleishman is in Trouble”) and Kathryn Hahn (“Tiny Beautiful Things”).
In order to determine the likelihood of Chastain perpetuating said unfortunate trend, let’s take a closer look at each nominee.

Just two years after winning a Best TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actor Emmy for “Mare of Easttown,” Evan Peters currently has a strong shot at conquering the corresponding lead category as the star of “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.” By succeeding on this outing, he would not only maintain his perfect acting Emmys record, but would also follow Ed Flanders as the second recipient of both possible limited program performance prizes.
Given the overall strength of this year’s Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor lineup, Peters’s potential win won’t come easily, if at all. The only other previous Emmy nominee in the mix is Kumail Nanjiani (“Welcome to Chippendales”), with most of the slots being filled by well-known first-timers Taron Egerton (“Black Bird”), Daniel Radcliffe (“Weird: The Al Yankovic Story”), Michael Shannon (“George & Tammy”), and Steven Yeun (“Beef”).

This year’s limited program writing Emmy contest is unique in that it is the first in five years to include any TV movies at all and the first in 13 years to involve three of them. The one-off narrative specials in the running for this honor are “Fire Island,” “Prey,” and “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story,” all of which are also nominated for Best TV Movie, and the middle of which has achieved the rare feat of concurrently being recognized for its directing.
While all three of these telefilms stand as relatively strong contenders, this writing race is being very comfortably led by “Beef,” which is the only program that can possibly win all seven of this year’s major limited series Emmys. Putting up fights of their own are the miniseries “Fleishman is in Trouble” and “Swarm,” which both also face “Beef” in the corresponding lead actress and contemporary costumes categories.

Jake Schreier is looking forward to telling a fresh story with 'Thunderbolts'.The 41-year-old filmmaker is helming the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie and is delighted to be putting his own imprint on the comic book genre with a tale from a "different perspective".Jake told Collider: "It was a really different approach and a new kind of story to tell. It is not a sequel. Yes, these characters have appeared before but it is a new story being told and a story I think with a very different perspective than people are expecting."That felt exciting and that felt like a real challenge to take on."The film – slated for release in December 2024 - follows a group of antiheroes as they are recruited by the government to go on missions and Jake discussed the challenge of combining a "personal" movie with something that will impress audiences across the world.

Sza has shared a new music video for “Snooze,” which portrays a “multiverse” of romantic relationships with Justin Bieber, actors Woody McClain (Power Book II: Ghost) and Young Mazino (Beef), and hitmaker Benny Blanco.
Directed by Bradley J. Calder, the clip features our previous cover star falling in and out of love with her co-stars in the video. In the opening scene, the Tde singer goes on a picnic with Bieber before they head over to her bedroom to share a joint. Then, we get a glimpse at her romances with McClain and Mazino. The former is set in a darkly lit gym, while the latter takes place on a farm, where they ride a horse and an Atv. Meanwhile, Blanco eats french fries off her butt.
Things really get weird when Sza seems to find happiness with a robot. Toward the end of the video, we get a preview of an unreleased track.

Tacked to the end of the video is another for a previously unreleased track that begins with Sza in an elegant embrace with a partner in a lush field and ends with her stripped down to a thong by herself. “Snooze” is...

Whenever she finds herself in a room surrounded by TV’s biggest stars, Rhea Seehorn is always looking for Bob Odenkirk. “He’s my partner in crime,” the Better Call Saul star says of her co-star. This awards season will likely be no different, as Seehorn, Odenkirk and the AMC series are all nominated once again for Emmy Awards.
For the second year in a row, Seehorn scored a nom for her performance as Kim Wexler, a role she’s played over six seasons and seven years. But this time marks Seehorn’s last outing as the character, as the series closed with its final season in August 2022.
Coming off last year’s nomination, Seehorn isn’t any less excited for the mayhem to come — eventually, as the ceremony itself has been pushed to Jan. 15, 2024: “I am an eternally not-jaded person,” she says, adding that she intends to deploy...

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we discuss the limited/TV movie races, where “Beef” is predicted to win multiple categories.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! It’s Friday and as you’re reading this someone probably just voted for their 2023 Emmy Award winners (2024 edition). For Lee Sung Jin, Beef is the first show that bears his name as the creator and showrunner — it’s also the most of himself he’s ever poured into a project. When the 10 episodes dropped on Netflix in early April, critics fawned over the dark comedy and its culturally specific study of anger, which begins with a road rage incident that leads to a contentious feud between Danny (Steven Yeun) and Amy (Ali Wong). For Lee, that sort of critical acceptance was very meaningful, but not nearly as “life-affirming” as the responses from “people I’d see on Reddit or who DMed me who are struggling with some sort of deep depression or a mental health thing who watch the show and say, ‘Hey, I felt like the show was me and I feel less alone about it,’ ” he says. “That’s been really nice and it, in turn,...

One of the most exciting races at this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards is Best Movie/Limited Actress. With a lineup featuring Jessica Chastain in “George and Tammy,” Riley Keough in “Daisy Jones and the Six,” Kathryn Hahn in “Tiny Beautiful Things,” Ali Wong in “Beef,” Dominique Fishback in “Swarm,” and Lizzy Caplan in “Fleishman is in Trouble,” this is one of the most diverse lineups this category has seen to date.
However, despite all the outstanding performances this category has to offer, I think this will be a showdown between Wong and Fishback. While “Beef” was embraced by the television academy to a much greater extent, Fishback’s performance has been hailed by critics, audiences, and now her industry peers just like Wong’s.

Murray Bartlett received not one but two Emmy nominations this year. One was widely expected, in Best Drama Guest Actor for “The Last of Us,” but the other one, perhaps not as much. He was nominated for “Welcome to Chippendales” in Best Limited Series/TV Movie Supporting Actor, the category he won last year for “The White Lotus.” And he’ll make history if he wins the award again.
Another victory would make Bartlett the first person to win the category in consecutive years. There is, unsurprisingly, not a ton of back-to-back champs in a category recognizing one-offs like limited and anthology series and TV movies. Since the category was formalized in 1975, Beau Bridges is the only one who’s won it twice for “The Positively True Adventures of the Alleged Texas Cheerleader-Murdering Mom” in 1993 and “The Second Civil War” in 1997. Michael Moriarty, who triumphed in 2002 for “James Dean,” comes...
