Jimmy Page paid tribute to the late Steve Albini, who served as recording engineer and mixer for the 1998 album, Walking into Clarksdale, a collaboration between Page and his former Led Zeppelin bandmate, Robert Plant.
“I was very sad to hear of Steve Albini’s passing this week,” Page wrote in an Instagram post. “Robert and I worked with him in 1997 on our album, Walking Into Clarksdale — a record I’m still really proud of.

Steve Albini, a singer and guitarist best known for producing some of the most groundbreaking and influential albums of the alt-rock genre, died of a heart attack at his Chicago recording studio Electrical Audio. He was 61.
Albini’s death and cause of death was confirmed by Taylor Hales of Electrical Audio.
Born July 22, 1962, in Pasadena, Albini moved to the Chicago area after high school to study journalism at Northwestern University. While there, he began writing for local punk rock ‘zines and beginning to record and engineer albums for local bands.
Stubbornly opposed to the larger music industry and its exploitation of artists, Albini formed the Chicago-based band Big Black in 1981, recording the first of several albums, an EP for the Chicago label Ruthless Records, a label he co-managed. That band last until 1987.
From 1987 to 1988, Albini sang and played guitar for Rapeman, named after a Japanese comic book. The short-lived band broke up after one album,...

There’s a first-look photo from “Presumed Innocent” that’s so evocative you’d assume it was planned. In the image from the Apple TV+ series, which premieres June 12, Jake Gyllenhaal stands in a courtroom looking distraught. His hands are clasped in front of his rumpled shirt, and at first glance, it looks like he’s been handcuffed by the policeman who’s hooking his arm. That’s a solid visual metaphor for a story about a man being prosecuted for murder.
But while it’s the stuff of a publicist’s dreams, the photograph was a happy accident. “I was plunked down on the floor, and it was just the luck of me capturing the stuff that was unfolding around me,” said unit photographer Michael Becker. “Sometimes, you get lucky enough to capture a moment that draws you into what’s going on.”
That’s how it goes in his business.

Steven Spielberg's "Schindler's List" was the rare animal that was a huge critical darling, a major awards contender, and a massive blockbuster. "Schindler's List" was nominated for 12 Academy Awards, winning seven, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Worldwide, the film grossed over $322 million, a huge amount for a prestige picture. The fact that Spielberg also made "Jurassic Park" that same year only makes the achievement that much more impressive.
"Schindler's List" tells the story of Oskar Schindler, a wealthy Czech industrialist who, during World War II, employed as many Jewish workers as he could in his factories with the explicit purpose of saving them from concentration camps. He had to remain friendly with the Nazi party to keep his factories running and became increasingly distraught at what was happening to Europe's Jewish population. By the end of the film, Schindler breaks down, realizing that his wealth...

Natalie Portman is the latest actor to speak about the decline of the movie star. In an interview with Vanity Fair, the “Black Swan” Oscar winner noted that kids these days like her own have no idea who movie stars are but are widely familiar with popular YouTubers.
“The striking thing has been the decline of film as a primary form of entertainment,” Portman said. “It feels much more niche now. If you ask someone my kids’ age about movie stars, they don’t know anyone compared to YouTube stars, or whatever.”
And how does that feel? “There’s a liberation to it, in having your art not be a popular art,” she answered. “You can really explore what’s interesting to you. It becomes much more about passion than about commerce. And interesting, too, to beware of it becoming something elitist. I think all of these art forms, when they become less popularized,...

“Schindler’s List was never a cure for antisemitism,” emphasizes Steven Spielberg. “It was a reminder of the symptoms of it.”
These days, tragically, antisemitism is all over the headlines: Neo-Nazis chanting “Jews will not replace us” in Charlottesville. The Tree of Life Synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh. The Oct. 7 terrorist attack on Israel that claimed the lives of some 1,200 Jews, the largest slaughter since the Holocaust. Not to mention a former and possibly future American president using Hitler-like language at his Nuremberg-esque rallies, referring to immigrants as “vermin” who are “poisoning the blood” of America.
Liam Neeson and Steven Spielberg were photographed Jan. 5 at Quixote Studios West Hollywood.
All of which is why, 30 years after Spielberg won best picture and best director for his movie about Oskar Schindler, the German businessman who saved 1,200 Jews from the Nazis during World War II, THR is revisiting his film with an oral history...

San Francisco, Sep 3 (Ians) Tech giant Google, which turns 25 on Monday, has come a long way from being born as a search engine in the garage of Susan Wojcicki — the future boss of YouTube — in a new tech landscape of generative AI, chatbots and social media.
Google was founded on September 4, 1998, by American computer scientists Larry Page and Sergey Brin while they were PhD students at Stanford University in California.
The company — now part of the parent group called Alphabet and run by Indian-origin Sundar Pichai — has diversified into several tech streams and launched several products.
The company rapidly grew to offer a multitude of products and services beyond Google Search, many of which hold dominant market positions like Gmail, Google Maps, Google Cloud, Chrome, YouTube, Workspace, Android operating system, cloud storage Drive, Google Translate), video chat app Meet, Pixel smartphones, Google Assistant, Bard AI and more

As of this writing, based on the combined Oscar predictions of Gold Derby users, Fantasia Barrino is the front-runner to win Best Actress with 9/2 odds for playing Celie in “The Color Purple.” Currently in seventh place with 11/1 odds is Annette Bening for “Nyad.” Bening is long overdue for her first win. So could this be similar to 1985 when another overdue veteran beat an actress playing Celie in “The Color Purple?”
In “The Color Purple,” Barrino plays Celie Harris Johnson, an African-American woman struggling to live in the South during the early 1900s. In “Nyad,” Bening plays Diana Nyad, a real-life swimmer who, at age 60 and with the help of her best friend and coach (Jodie Foster), commits to achieving her life-long dream: a 110-mile open ocean swim from Cuba to Florida.

What does it mean to be one of the “hottest” or “buzziest” titles in a film festival sales market if there’s no stars drum up that excitement? Or if there’s little likelihood of an all-night bidding war by a streamer spending in the 7-figures to land their next Oscar contender?
As we reported earlier today, those are all ways in which the strike threatens to weigh on the film markets at Venice, Telluride, and Toronto. A handful of those films are directorial debuts by famous actors-turned-filmmakers, and some even have interim agreements from SAG-AFTRA that will let them promote. But all these films should stand on their own merits and could catch the eyes of the many non-amptp distributors that need creative ways to fill out their slates.

Led Zeppelin stormed onto the music scene in 1969 and soon became classic rock legends. There are some aesthetically similar bands Zep fans should listen to, but nothing comes close to the real thing. Yet the band wasn’t infallible. It’s one of their finest works, but the 1975 double album Physical Graffiti contains some duds. Let’s look at the four worst songs Led Zeppelin put on Physical Graffiti.
(l-r) John Paul Jones, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, and John Bonham (background) of Led Zeppelin | Ian Dickson/Redferns Led Zeppelin did some of their finest work on ‘Physical Graffiti’
Before we cover the worst Physical Graffiti songs, we need to mention that the record has some of Led Zeppelin’s best songs.
Side 2 closer “Kashmir” is the band’s definitive song, according to both Robert Plant and Jimmy Page. It might be one of the most diverse Led Zeppelin albums, too.

Jimmy Page wasn’t above liberally borrowing from his influences in Led Zeppelin’s early days. Before they penned delicate songs that displayed their soft side, Zep twisted and amplified blues music into something unique. The band had more or less ditched covering blues tunes by the time of Led Zeppelin III, but their guitarist still borrowed a riff from another guitar legend. Page might have been apologizing to Jeff Beck with his five-note tribute on the Led Zeppelin song “Since I’ve Been Loving You.”

Page cut his teeth as a session guitarist before he formed Led Zeppelin. He turned down an offer to play in the Yardbirds to learn more about studio recording techniques (which he put to good use in Zep). He suggested the band’s manager add Beck instead.

Introducing “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” the lavish hyperkinetic popcorn fairy tale that kicked off SXSW this evening, the film’s co-directors, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, told the audience that they had designed the movie to appeal to hardcore D&d players — and also to those who know absolutely nothing about the game. This came as a relief to me, since what I know about Dungeons & Dragons you could put on the head of a…well, I know so little that I can’t even come up with a proper D&d reference with which to spin that cliché.
The filmmakers were being honest. “Honor Among Thieves” is built on the edifice of D&d lore, packed with totems and characters and Easter eggs that fans of the legendary role-playing game will drink in with a connoisseur’s delight. But for those, like me, who have...

Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves kicked off the SXSW film and TV festival on Friday night in Austin with a laugh-filled premiere.
“We have seen our Games of Thrones and Lords of the Rings and they are great, but there’s not a lot of laughs. We wanted to show the fun,” said Dungeons and Dragons co-director Jonathan Goldstein of the fantasy genre from the stage of the Paramount Theater in downtown Austin.
Chris Pine, Regé-Jean Page, Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith and Sophia Lillis star in the movie from Paramount and eOne as a band of adventurers that are on a quest to retrieve a powerful relic, a journey that runs into trouble after they come across some nefarious characters. Hugh Grant, who was not in attendance at Friday’s premiere, plays the group’s primary foil, as an ally turned con man.

The SXSW Film Festival began Friday with a thirst-trap premiere at Austin’s Paramount Theater. “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” the Paramount Pictures title that served as the opening night film, has a lot of things going for it: owl-bears, fat dragons, Hugh Grant. It also has Regé-Jean Page, who attended the filmmakers’ post-screening Q&a.

“Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” stole the hearts of the audience at its world premiere at the SXSW Film Festival on March 10, no matter whether or not they’d played the 50-year-old role playing game that shares its title.
The action comedy stars Chris Pine as a rakish bard named Edgin and Michelle Rodriguez as his platonic life-partner, the tough-as-nails warrior, Holga. The two set off on a quest to reunite Edgin with his estranged daughter, Kira (Chloe Coleman), and they wind up working with Xenk (Regé-Jean Page), a valorous paladin; Simon (Justice Smith), a sorcerer with an inferiority complex; and Doric (Sophia Lillis), a no-nonsense shapeshifting druid. Rounding out the cast are Hugh Grant as Forge Fitzwilliam, Edgin and Holga’s untrustworthy former compatriot; and Daisy Head as Sofina, a powerful wizard who is more than she initially seems.

Jimmy Page cemented his status as a classic rock guitar legend in Led Zeppelin. Years before that, he was just a session musician who realized he needed to quit to satisfy his creative interests. And before that, he was briefly a solo artist who made a record that sounded nothing like Led Zeppelin.

Led Zeppelin proved Page’s greatness as a guitar beyond a measure of doubt. He showed his skills extended beyond the guitar during his stint with the band. The guitarist also produced, engineered, and mixed their records. He typically stuck to guitar, but Page flashed banjo and bass skills in Led Zeppelin.
He did the same on “She Just Satisfies,” a solo song from 1965.

Bridgerton is one of Netflix’s crown jewels. The show has introduced millions to the glories of Regency romance, and with two seasons streaming on Netflix and a third season in production, there’s no sign of Bridgerton’s fandom decreasing anytime soon.
Each season focuses on a new couple, and while fans are on board for all the new characters, many believe that the Duke and Duchess of Hastings from Bridgerton’s record-breaking first season reign supreme. While many have held out hope that they might see the couple in future seasons of the series, all signs are pointing to the conclusion that the two stars who embodied the characters are done with the show for good.

As much as fans might crave it, Led Zeppelin won’t be making any new music. Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, and John Paul Jones gathered to jam after their disastrous Live Aid show in 1985, but that reunion crashed before it took off. Their one-off 2007 performance at the O2 arena in London was the last time we saw Zep’s three surviving members playing together. Since they won’t be coming together to make new music, Led Zeppelin fans might want to explore the work of these four bands.

Page said the key to Led Zeppelin’s first album was having all four band members share the spotlight. Not many bands can have their drummer or bassist command the group, but Zep was one of them.
