My biggest concern before watching Hack Your Health: The Secrets of Your Gut was: what if the documentary ends up making me feel miserable? Because of the title, it did seem like an extended version of one of those preachy health commercials, which do nothing but scare you about your own health. But Hack Your Health turned out to be much different and definitely better than that. It surely didn’t make me feel worried. In fact, I would say that the very informative documentary is actually a pleasant watch. Let’s take a closer look.
What Happens in the Documentary?
It was evident from the title that the documentary was going to be about the gut. Staying true to that, Hack Your Health doesn’t waste a minute to get into the point. It begins by telling the audience that the gut is much more than the organ from...

Absorbing the breakthroughs of the French New Wave and the burgeoning New Hollywood era and applying them to the artier ends of Bernardo Bertolucci’s native Italian cinema, The Conformist presents a façade of overwhelming cinematic beauty only to reveal the rotten soul beneath its surface. Vittorio Storaro’s cinematography captures Rome and Paris with an Antonioniesque eye for architectural detail, swooning camera movements, and even instances of color timing so extreme that certain shots recall the hand-tinted process of early silent film.
The precision of The Conformist’s images, though, only exacerbates the detached, inhuman alienation of the film’s protagonist, Marcello (Jean-Louis Trintignant). He’s the last scion of a diminished aristocratic line whose exhausted wealth and status are symbolized by an expansive but dilapidated and mildewing family villa occupied by a mother (Milly) who copes with a loss of status with copious amounts of opiates (his father...

Budding filmmaker Enea and medical student Pietro see each other for the first time at a film set in Rome. The year is 1978. Not a word is spoken between the two of them, but their eyes meet. Butterflies start to fly inside their stomachs. Enea is obviously working there, and Pietro is just passing by. Soon, they meet in Nuovo Olimpo, a movie theater that only plays black-and-white classic films from the old days. The theater also happens to be a safe place for gay men to have quick rendezvous. Titti, the matronly woman who sits at the ticket counter, is progressive enough to aid all these men in their exploration and, at times, give them necessary guidance. Enea and Pietro don’t take much time to hit it off. Pietro is initially nervous, as he has never been with a man before. Enea is rather flamboyant and confident, is smitten by Pietro,...

The gothic mode in Italian horror was effectively launched, and reached its early apotheosis, with the release of Mario Bava’s Black Sunday in 1960. An ensuing tidal wave of likeminded films flooded the market throughout the ’60s, before starting to dry up in the early ’70s, as the more modernist-inclined (and frequently more graphic) giallo came into prominence. Now Severin Films has gathered together four vintage examples of the Italian gothic trend in their new box set Danza Macabra Volume One. When it comes to sex and violence, those two requisite mainstays of the genre, the films run the gamut from almost timidly titillating to unabashedly lurid.
