When we talk about dedication to a particular role, method acting often springs to the forefront as an emblem of an actor’s commitment to embodying a character, and who better to exemplify this than Andrew Garfield?
But what happens when this technique, sometimes polarizing among thespians, is taken to new heights in preparation for a role under the keen eye of a storied director? The Amazing Spider-Man star, 40, not only embraced method acting but transformed its contours to perfectly fit the ‘spiritual’ demands of his character in Martin Scorsese’s Silence.

Ted Lasso star Hannah Waddingham may remain tight-lipped about the actual plot of the upcoming Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning – Part Two, but she is happy to reiterate her previous kind words about co-star Tom Cruise.
“He’s a fabulous person, great to work with,” Waddingham told Deadline on the Golden Globes red carpet on Sunday. “It’s hilarious to be fractionally vilified for saying something nice. What have we become if we can’t say something nice? He’s gorgeous, as is Chris McQuarrie, the director.”
Last month, she had said on ITV’s James Martin’s Saturday Morning: “[Cruise] is without doubt one of the loveliest and encouraging, positive and inspiring human beings I have ever met.”
The eighth Mission Impossible installment aside, she is excited to discuss another of her upcoming films, The Fall Guy, which reboots the original 1980s Lee Majors-led television series. “It’s going...

Tom Cruise can be a divisive figure; we here at JoBlo love the guy but he definitely has his critics, primarily those who hit at his personal life and dealings in Scientology. But if you take a look at any one of his insane stunts – or listen to his tirade against slip-ups during the Covid-19 pandemic that shut down production on Dead Reckoning – you’ll know this guy is the real deal when it comes to making movies. And if you have anything bad to say about the guy’s work ethic, you’ll have to answer to M:i co-star Hannah Waddingham.
Hannah Waddingham, who co-stars in 2025’s sequel to Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One – which has yet to be officially named, but we feel like the fates might align on this one… – suggested that her views on Tom Cruise changed while working with him on the eighth installment of the M:i franchise.

ITV is to publish a talent “charter” setting out key standards expected from its high-profile presenters following the publication of the long-awaited Phillip Schofield review, which rejected the notion that there was a “toxic culture” on This Morning and that ITV knew anything of his affair.
Led by Jane Mulcahy Kc, the review made several recommendations following the Schofield scandal that led to his resignation, but denied there was a “toxic culture” on the show he had been helming for years.
Schofield resigned from This Morning in disgrace in May and was dropped by his agency Ymu after admitting to a years-long affair with a much younger colleague. Soon after, ITV instructed Mulcahy to review the facts around Schofield following his departure. ITV bosses had been grilled by the UK’s Culture, Media & Sport Committee but denied any hard evidence was ever provided about the affair.

Ciisa, the independent body set up to police bullying and harassment complaints in UK TV and film, will officially go live next year.
The announcement is a long-anticipated one, especially in light of recent scandals such as the allegations against Russell Brand.
The Creative Industries Independent Standards Authority (Ciisa), which is backed financially by all UK broadcasters, will offically start taking complaints next year, with more details to come on its inner workings.
The news was celebrated by those who have already championed Ciisa, such as big stars including Ruth Wilson, Keira Knightley, Naomie Harris and Stephen Graham, along with Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer, who most recently backed the body at the Rts Cambridge Convention last week.
“Everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy a creative career, while feeling safe and working in a professional environment,” said Frazer. “It’s important that industry comes together to tackle bullying, harassment and discrimination,...

The BBC has found itself in hot water once again over the behind-the-scenes behavior of one of its highest profile presenters.

Nolan declined to comment on the allegations via the BBC press office.
Nolan was paid more than £400,000 last year and hosts shows on Radio 5 Live and Radio Ulster.

More individuals have raised concerns over toxic working cultures, bullying, discrimination and harassment on This Morning since ITV bosses appeared for a grilling over the Phillip Schofield saga, the UK Committee reviewing it has said.
In a letter published today from Committee Chair Caroline Dinenage to ITV CEO Carolyn McCall, Dinenage said “a large number of individuals” have been in touch since the June hearing.
Dinenage, whose letter was sent in late July, said individuals “speak with great pride” about working at ITV and are “hugely positive” about many colleagues. But “they also raise claims of toxic working cultures, bullying, discrimination and harrassment,” she went on to write.
Dinenage queried McCall and fellow ITV bosses’ claims that there have been only two complaints from people working on the show in five years. This came up during the June hearing, when committee member John Nicolson said he had personally received many more than two.

Exclusive: UK broadcaster ITV will “closely monitor” productions from under-fire TV chief James Martin going forwards.

Exclusive: Brit TV chef James Martin is at the center of a bullying storm after he was accused of intimidating his crew on multiple occasions.
Deadline can reveal that ITV has told Martin to change his behavior after the UK’s biggest commercial broadcaster received a complaint in May about his conduct from some of the presenter’s closest colleagues.
Concerns were raised about Martin’s treatment of crew during recent filming on James Martin’s Spanish Adventure, the latest in a long line of travel cooking shows the chef has fronted for ITV over his six-year spell with the broadcaster.
Deadline understands that the complaint is the second time ITV has been made aware of misgivings about Martin’s conduct following a separate incident in 2018 when he launched a foul-mouthed tirade against staff after a drain was blocked at his home during the production of James Martin’s Saturday Morning.

God made man in his own image, and then man defied His orders, so man was cast out from His garden—or so the story goes in the Bible. Directors Chuck Konzelman and Cary Solomon made a movie based on this, and it’s the 2023 supernatural horror Nefarious. Jordan Belfi plays psychiatrist Dr. James Martin, who goes into a prison to decide whether a criminal (Sean Patrick Flannery) is mentally fit to be executed, but realizes he’s gotten much more than he bargained for. Shot almost entirely inside one room, the movie raises questions about man’s choices and actions with references to heaven and hell, but it quickly starts reeking of propaganda and not so much horror. Here’s what happens in Nefarious.
Spoilers Ahead

Nefarious tells the tale of a convicted serial killer waiting on the day of his execution. On that day he has a last minute, court-ordered psychiatric evaluation. The doctor then needs to decide if this man is who he claims to be – a demon, Nefarious, who quite happily wants the execution to go ahead.
Much of the movie, possibly about 70% of it, is just the serial killer, played by Sean Patrick Flanery and the doctor (James Martin), played by Jordan Belfi, talking to each other across a table in an otherwise empty room. It’s a battle of wits and character, as the doctor believes he can’t be fooled into calling this man crazy, until he’s not...

Angela Bassett has shared insight into the bond she forged with Austin Butler during the 2023 film awards season.
Both Bassett and Butler were in contention for major accolades in recent months, with both taking home Golden Globes for their performances in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Elvis, respectively.
While repeatedly attending the same ceremonies as one another, the actors connected over their similar experiences.
When Butler didn’t win the Academy Award for Best Actor, Bassett was seen comforting him, having missed out on the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress herself earlier that evening.
To mark Butler being named as one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People of 2023 on Thursday (13 April), Bassett supplied some words about her new friend.
“The first time I met Austin Butler, we were both starting to find our grooves in what promised to be a busy awards season,” she wrote. “We connected in a fleeting moment,...

Daniel Radcliffe has said that adults need to “trust” transgender children when they “tell them who they are”.
The Harry Potter star made the remark while hosting a roundtable discussion with transgender youths for the LGBT+ suicide prevention nonprofit ,The Trevor Project.
Radcliffe has worked with the Trevor Project for more than a decade, and was honoured with a Hero Award from the organisation in 2011.
While his latest remarks were mischaracterised by some media outlets as suggesting that parents should consent to their children’s immediate medical transition, Radcliffe spent much of the disucssion hearing from young trans people who had spent years waiting for hormone therapy, and whose traumatic gender dysphoria had been downplayed or ignored by their parents.

US President Joe Biden said he would boast to his daughter about having his photo taken with James Martin, one of the stars of the Oscar-winning short film An Irish Goodbye.
The film, which won the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film at the ceremony last month, is a black comedy set on a rural farm in Glenmornan, a small hamlet in the west of County Tyrone in Northern Ireland.
It follows the reunion of estranged brothers Turlough (Seamus O’Hara) and Lorcan (Martin) after the death of their mother.
Biden pointed out James Martin in the crowd as he spoke this week at Ulster University in Belfast, during a visit to the country for the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement.
Martin, who is from Belfast and has worked as a barista in the city, stood and bowed, while receiving applause from the audience led by the president.

One year after the landmark success for Best Picture winner “Coda” at the Academy Awards, the 2023 Oscars presented the latest opportunity for Hollywood to show the world where it stands on inclusion and diversity.
On Oscars night, through a combination of memorable moments and inclusive components of the ceremony, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences demonstrated its growing commitment to embracing inclusion and accessibility for all.
For the second time, a free Asl livestream was available on the Academy’s YouTube channel. The livestream was updated this year to enhance accessibility for viewers. On the red carpet, a team of Asl interpreters helped participants more effectively engage with fans and viewers at home, with members of the media receiving guidelines on how to make their pre-show coverage more accessible. Meanwhile, stage accessibility included not only ramp access but a stage wheelchair lift for the first time as well.

Actor James Martin who went back to working his part-time day job as a Starbucks barista after starring in An Irish Goodbye, has become the first person with Down syndrome to win an Oscar for his role in the live-action short film.

On Sunday (12 March), the 31-year-old, joined his co-star O’Hara and directors Tom Berkeley and Ross White on stage to accept the award for Best Live Action Short.

It’s official. Jimmy Kimmel has cemented his place as one of the great Oscar hosts. His third turn as emcee was exactly what was needed. The late night host and Emmy winner has officially joined the ranks of Bob Hope, Johnny Carson, and, dare I say, Billy Crystal as one of the most accomplished and polished to do the job. Thankfully, Kimmel didn’t have to carry the entire show on his back. The 95th Oscar ceremony was fast-paced, emotional, and other than a few minor quibbles, was as strong a ceremony as one could ask for.
But we have to start with Kimmel. A host’s impact is determined primarily by their monologue, and Kimmel’s was first rate. It was not groundbreaking, but the role of an Oscar host is not to reinvent the wheel. Kimmel’s monologue was classy — pointed and biting without ever resorting to meanness.

Jimmy Kimmel Jokes About The Will Smith Slap (Of Course)
Host Jimmy Kimmel took aim at Will Smith’s actions last year in his opening monologue.
“We want you to have fun, we want you to feel safe, and most importantly, we want me to feel safe,” he began. “So we have strict policies in place. If anyone in this theatre commits an act of violence at any point in this show, you will be awarded the Oscar for Best Actor and permitted to give a 19-minute long speech.”

In the vast swathe of the multiverse, we now know which branch of reality we’re living in: the one in which Everything Everywhere All At Once sweeps the Oscars, bagging Best Picture, Directing for Daniels (aka Daniel Kwan_ (the Daniel Radcliffe farting corpse movie) and the ‘Turn Down For What’ video are now Oscar winners. The film won seven awards throughout the night, picking up steam especially towards the end of the ceremony – winning the all-important Editing category, as well as Original Screenplay.
The stage was filled with googly-eye pins and heartfelt speeches as Daniels and the team stepped up for their trophies. “You have all inspired me,” Daniel Kwan told the assembled crowd. “One of the best thing we can do for each other is shelter each other from the crazy chaos.” Michelle Yeoh, taking to the stage to nab her Leading Actress award, said her award goes...

Maybe it was the way Brendan Gleeson pointed at Jenny the emotional support donkey, or how Julia Louis-Dreyfus jazzed up what could have been a sleepy introduction to the Costume Design category by saying how she was donning a dress from National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.
Either way, the 95th Oscars served up plenty of delightful moments for awards show-weary viewers.

The winners of the Short Film (Live Action) trophy at this year’s Academy Awards cut short their speech to sing “Happy Birthday” to the film’s star, James Martin.
Set in Northern Ireland, An Irish Goodbye follows two estranged brothers, played by Martin and Seamus O’Hara, who reconnect following the death of their mother (Michelle Fairley).
After directors Tom Berkeley and Ross White took to the stage, alongside the film’s two leads, they spoke for a minute before saying: “This award is actually the second most important thing about today, because it’s this man’s birthday.”
Embracing Martin, who has Down’s Syndrome, they said: “He’s out here in Hollywood, wearing a leapard print suit jacket. We’d love to use the rest of our time up here to sing for James.”
They then began singing, and members of the audience began joining in.
Viewers praised the moment on social media.

The Filmmaking Duo Behind Oscar-Nominated Short ‘An Irish Goodbye’ On Balancing “Tragedy And Comedy”
It’s not easy to tackle a gruesome subject matter with humor. And to make the Irish dark comedy work, its filmmakers drew inspiration from their own ideations of life and death. An Irish Goodbye, written and directed by Tom Berkeley and Ross White, follows a pair of estranged brothers who must learn to get along after their mother’s untimely passing. Lorcan (James Martin), an adult with Down syndrome, takes his mother’s death the hardest and soon fears that his brother will abandon him. While Turlough (Seamus O’Hara) grapples with whether he should ship Lorcan off to live with their aunt in London or learn to care for his brother.

In the most prominent Oscar categories, many of the nominees are fairly established; the short film categories, and the Best Live Action short in particular, provide more room for discoveries. It was here, 18 years ago, that “The Banshees of Inisherin” writer-director Martin McDonagh won for his short “Six Shooter,” and where Andrea Arnold won a year prior for “Wasp,” from a category of nominees that also included Taika Waititi and Nacho Vigalondo.
It’s also a category that can attract support from major Hollywood talent, as with last year’s winner “The Long Goodbye,” starring and produced by Riz Ahmed, who shared the award with director Aneil Karia. Yet even in that case, the winner of the category — a spoken-word indictment of racial violence — was more daring and inventive than the bulk of the feature nominees.
In that regard, this year’s set of contenders all stand out for one...

Longtime collaborators Tom Berkeley and Ross White, working collectively under the Floodlight Pictures banner, are currently in the running for an Academy Award and have also been nominated for this year’s BAFTAs with their heartwarming, laugh out loud comedy short An Irish Goodbye. This second film from the co-writer/director duo follows two very different embittered brothers dealing with the death of their matriarch and struggling to leave their Irish homestead. With cracking shots of rural landscape framing their final hurrah to bid farewell to the farm they grew up on, Seamus O’Hara and James Martin brilliantly embody the fractious brothers, with wry injections of genius from Paddy Jenkins and Micelle Harley’s soothing narration An Irish Goodbye is a balm for the soul. Berkeley and White smoothly tread the line of delicacy in dealing with grief whilst goading audiences to revel in the, often dark, but hilarious situations the brothers find themselves in.
