In George Lucas' 1977 sci-fi flick "Star Wars," there is a scene wherein a cadre of Nazi-like bad guys, in the employ of the evil Empire, gather around a boardroom table and mention that the mysterious off-screen Emperor has dissolved the senate and taken absolute control. The military generals are outraged, wondering how the Empire might survive without a bureaucracy in place. In Irvin Kirshner's 1980 sequel "The Empire Strikes Back," it's established that Darth Vader (David Prowse), a mysterious masked warlock, was actually the Emperor's right-hand man, indicating that the Emperor retains control of the Empire through the sheer force of his villainy.
In "The Empire Strikes Back," the Emperor appeared in holographic form to have a powwow with Darth Vader and plan his next move. In the original cut of the movie, the Emperor was played on screen by actress Marjorie Eaton, outfitted with eerie, alien eyeballs. Eaton was a long-working character performer in Hollywood,...

"Peace is a lie," the poem begins, "There is only passion. Through passion, I gain strength. Through strength, I gain power. Through power, I gain victory. Through victory, my chains are broken. The Force shall free me."

‘The Mist’ 4K Ultra HD Review – There’s a Reason We’re Still Talking About This Movie 16 Years Later
Stephen King adaptations have always been hit and miss. Before Mike Flanagan came along, there was one filmmaker who could always be trusted with King’s material: Frank Darabont, whose first foray into filmmaking was a short adaptation of “The Woman in the Room.” After making a name for himself as a screenwriter with the likes of A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and The Blob, Darabont made his feature directorial debut with 1994’s The Shawshank Redemption and followed it up with The Green Mile in 1999.
His thus-far final King adaptation came in 2007 with The Mist, which finds a group of locals trapped in a grocery store while an ominous fog shrouding mysterious secrets envelopes their quaint Maine town. A microcosm of any community, the supermarket is a canny setting for a contained thriller. The divisive mob mentality and pigheaded self-righteousness that manifests under pressure is even more poignant in a post-Trump world.

"Star Wars Rebels" is one of the best things to ever happen to "Star Wars." This is an animated show that has become essential to understanding the overall franchise: a show with a great ensemble, different-looking lightsabers, a fantastic fight between Maul and Obi-Wan, and which shone a light on the origins of the Rebellion years before "Andor."
But before "Rebels," there was "Star Wars: The Force Unleashed." This action-adventure video game tells an original story about "Starkiller," born Galen Marek. He is the child of a Jedi who is taken in by Darth Vader and trained as his secret apprentice to track down and kill any Jedi who survived Order 66 -- much like the Inquisitors that would later become canon. Years later, Vader gives his apprentice a new task — to plant the seeds for what will become the Rebel Alliance, which Vader will then use to overthrow the Emperor.

In 2020, the voice cast of "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" reunited on Zoom to celebrate the long-delayed release of season 7 and play some "Star Wars" trivia questions. The one cast member whose hand always shot up, no matter the question? Sam Witwer, the voice of Darth Maul.
When Witwer proclaims himself a "Star Wars" geek, it isn't PR, nor is his knowledge limited to Wookieepedia factoids. The man can and has discussed the meaning of "Star Wars" with passion and evenhandedness. He can also stretch his voice into impressions of Obi-Wan Kenobi, the Emperor, and even George Lucas himself. With that range, it makes sense that Witwer has voiced so many different "Star Wars" characters.
During a guest appearance on Michael Rosenbaum's podcast "Inside of You," Witwer discussed how he first got cast in "Star Wars." If you don't know, Witwer provided both the voice and motion capture for Starkiller/Galen Marek,...

This Star Wars: Ahsoka article contains spoilers.
There never really seemed to be a question of if Ahsoka would bring back Anakin Skywalker – Hayden Christensen’s casting in the series hasn’t exactly been kept a secret – but rather when in the timeline we would see him given Darth Vader’s death in Return of the Jedi. We finally got our answer in “Fallen Jedi,” which sees Ahsoka seemingly fall to her death during her duel with Baylan Skoll, but the end of the episode reveals that Ahsoka has actually somehow been transported back to the World Between Worlds, this time greeted by her former master.
But as emotional as this reunion outside of time and space may be (hearing Anakin call Ahsoka “snips” again definitely had me tearing up a bit), there are some who believe that there’s more than just some Force ghost or time travel shenanigans going on here.

This Star Wars: Ahsoka article contains spoilers.
While Ahsoka features the return of many familiar Star Wars characters, the first two episodes have also introduced us to some intriguing newcomers, such as the mysterious former Imperial Inquisitor Marrok. All we know about Marrok so far is that he works alongside former Jedi Baylan Skoll and his apprentice Shin Hati as a mercenary for Lady Morgan Elsbeth and is aiding in their search for Grand Admiral Thrawn. But because of his mask, Marrok’s identity is a mystery that Star Wars fans are eager to solve.
That said, eagle-eyed fans think they’ve found the answer to who’s behind the mask. After spotting Sam Witwer’s name under “Additional Voices” in the credits for Ahsoka, the prevailing theory is that Marrok is actually the new canon version of Galen Marek aka Starkiller from the Force Unleashed video game series. Out of all possible human experiences, combat is one of the most easily gamified. However, there are only so many times that a player can be urged to decapitate NPCs before some uncomfortable questions start to creep in about the sadistic nature of finding entertainment in simulated murder. That’s why zombies are so prevalent in gaming, with these human-shaped husks just begging to be put out of their misery without the need for pesky moral quandaries.
On the other hand, this also means that it’s incredibly difficult for a title to stand out among other zombie games, as we’ve seen nearly every variation of an undead apocalypse since the early days of Zombies Ate My Neighbors. And with such an oversaturated market, it makes sense that players might be overly critical of a good game that doesn’t quite live up to their lofty expectations.

Most of the world knows Mark Hamill by sight. He played Luke Skywalker in the "Star Wars" franchise, an acting gig that has spanned over four decades. You might even have an action figure of him in your house right now. In addition, Hamill has slayed audiences with his voice work as the Joker in Batman TV shows, animated projects, and video games since 1992. Hamill's voice work (including his insanely accurate impression of "Star Wars" co-star Harrison Ford) is incredible, and while he won a Daytime Emmy for his role in "Elena of Avalor," he was never even nominated for the Joker. That's a crime, and it's unlikely to happen now that his Batman counterpart Kevin Conroy has died.
One job he did get a Daytime Emmy nomination for was voicing Darth Bane in season 6, episode 13 of the animated series "Star Wars: The Clone Wars," entitled "Sacrifice." However, according to...

"The Mandalorian" season 3 penultimate, episode, "The Spies," finally gathers factions of Mandalorians to retake their home planet of Mandalore. This rattles Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) because if conflicting Mandalorian factions are organizing instead of remaining divided, then they will be a force to reckon with.
The titular Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) hails from a significant faction: The Children of the Watch. Throughout "The Mandalorian," he has loyally served the sect that rescued him from a Separatist army on his home planet and raised him on Concordia. He based his virtues on their creed: raise foundlings with care, protect his fellow Mandalorian, and keep his helmet on. It's hard for many of us to imagine a world without "Star Trek: The Next Generation," but once upon a time, it was a risky sequel series potentially doomed to fail. Sir Patrick Stewart, who plays the steadfast Captain Jean-Luc Picard, didn't know much about "Star Trek" when he took the role in the late 1980s, and apparently he was told that the show would never make it past the first season. (Yikes!) Thankfully, those prognosticators were dead wrong, and "The Next Generation" ran for seven seasons and four films, ending with "Star Trek: Nemesis" in 2002. "The Next Generation" helped usher in the next era of "Star Trek," followed by shows like "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" and "Star Trek: Voyager," which explored different parts of Starfleet and some very different kinds of missions. It wound up becoming the beginning of the greater "Star Trek" universe, but it was nevertheless...

In celebration of its 15th anniversary, /Film's Eric Vespe has put together an oral history on Frank Darabont's heavy-hearted monster movie "The Mist." The 2007 adaptation of Stephen King's 1980 novella featured several Darabont Traveling Players, such as "The Walking Dead" star Jeffrey DeMunn, and brought on emergent actors like Sam Witwer, who played Private Wayne Jessup in "The Mist."
In the film, Pvt. Jessup is a soldier stationed at Arrowhead military base, near the creature-besieged town of Bridgton, Maine. At a pivotal moment, Jessup sheds light on the origin of the deadly white mist.

Ever since its release in 2007, Frank Darabont's "The Mist" has divided audiences with its bleak, shocking ending. Without going into spoilers, the final moments of the creature feature diverge from those of Stephen King's 1980 novella in its feature-length adaptation, carrying the townsfolk of Bridgton, Maine into intensely grim territory. It's an ending that Darabont defends years later, but the "Shawshank Redemption" director reveals to /Film that there was an axed opening scene that could have been just as memorable.
In honor of the film's 15th anniversary, /Film's Eric Vespe spoke with the cast and crew to compile a sprawling oral history for your reading pleasure. Fifteen years after its release, the Frank Darabont-directed Stephen King adaptation "The Mist" still stands the test of time. The horror flick more than delivers on its premise, with some gnarly creatures and a mystery-filled narrative. The clash between humans and monsters is not as simple as the bloody horror that follows them, too. Although the digital effects-heavy interdimensional bugs are fun to watch wreak havoc, it's the slow decay of its prominent humans that flips the term monster on its head.
The death of Private Wayne Jessup (Sam Witwer) near the climax of the film best showcases that moral corruption. To recap, Jessup ended up dying not just due to the massive insects, but the people stuck inside in the market. After revealing the truth behind the arrival of the monsters — it all has something to do with secret experiments going on at Jessup's military base _ the religious zealot Mrs.

Frank Darabont's harrowing and faith-shaking horror film "The Mist" doesn't look like other movies. It's not just the story's claustrophobic grocery store setting that makes the film's visuals distinctive, nor is it the eerie vision of a creepy, monster-addled mist that's transported straight from Stephen King's novella. No, "The Mist" features visuals that stand apart from its contemporaries thanks to its very mid-2000s secret weapon: the film used the same shooting crew as "The Shield."
Shawn Ryan's brutal small-screen masterpiece about the seemingly endless depths of corruption in a fictionalized Los Angeles police department ran for seven seasons on FX, and during that time, it gained a reputation for visuals that matched its ruthless, kinetic energy. This article contains spoilers for the ending of "The Mist," both the film and the novella.
Across movie history, filmmakers have gone to great lengths to maintain a surprise. Whether it's filming under fake names to throw off would-be scoopers or Marvel keeping the "Hawkeye" villain secret from everyone on the crew, directors don't want people knowing too much. Some directors even shoot multiple endings to make sure their cast don't know what's going to make it to the final cut. When it came time to film "The Mist," director Frank Darabont's 2007 adaptation of a Stephen King novella, some similar ingenuity was required to keep its shocker of an ending under wraps.
The gruesome finale sees Thomas Jane's David Drayton lay waste to his band of fellow survivors, including his own son, to spare them a grizzly fate at the hands of the creatures lurking in the mist.

Frank Darabont's "The Mist" celebrates its 15th anniversary this week, and although the adaptation from one of Stephen King's most famous short stories has its detractors, this landmark date really should be treated as a celebration. To mark the occasion, /Film's own Eric Vespe has amassed a compendium of interviews with most of the cast and crew to create the ultimate oral history of (in my opinion) one of the best horror films of the new millennium.

This article contains major spoilers for the ending of "The Mist."
While there are plenty of filmmakers who have successfully pulled off adaptations of the author's work to the screen, few tap into the spirit of Stephen King like Frank Darabont. The few he has directed ("The Shawshank Redemption" and "The Green Mile") harness the earnestness of King's text while giving way to an incredibly made film. When it came to "The Mist," which celebrates its 15th anniversary this week, there was an instance where Darabont managed to one-up King's original conclusion for this harrowing story of survival.

15 years after its release, "The Mist" has aged like fine wine. Despite some digital effects that don't look great in 2022, it's a straight-up good film that still lives in the back of the minds of the most horror-oriented folk. The thematic messages of the Stephen King adaptation work just as well as its gory parts, but the monsters are pretty neat, too. However, the bloody moral corruption of the human soul is not the only thing available for us to chew on. Shockingly enough, there is something much less sinister in the depths of "The Mist." The film is certainly not a family-friendly affair, but there is a not-so-random Easter egg that alludes to a widely-adored franchise.

Frank Darabont's "The Mist," an adaptation of the Stephen King novella of the same name, sported atmospheric terror, tentacled monsters surrounding a supermarket, and an unconventional, gut-wrenching ending. Most of the film is set inside a boxed-in space where tensions rise as the horror escalates, as the residents of Bridgton have nowhere to run. One of the residents, Mrs. Carmody (Marcia Gay Harden), interprets this eldritch terror as a religious armageddon and makes matters worse when she attempts to preach to and convert the survivors in an overzealous manner.
There is ample creepiness in "The Mist," in the form of swarming insects at nightfall and alien entities that manage to break into the store. "The Walking Dead" may be officially ending with its series finale tonight, but it lived up to its title long before that. Once one of the most talked-about shows on TV, the series became a shell of its former self, shambling along like a zombie even as it bled viewers and left critics increasingly underwhelmed. For the record, season 5 was when I jumped ship and the season 6 finale killed any chance of the show winning me back.

December is inching ever closer, and so is the release of Striking Distance Studios’ The Callisto Protocol. And to keep the buzz going, the developer has released a brand-new launch trailer for The Callisto Protocol that starts off with a bang, and quickly descends into hell.
Featuring the song “Lost Again” by Kings Elliot (recorded exclusively for The Callisto Protocol), the launch trailer quickly gives you the story overview of protagonist Jacob Lee being incarcerated as an inmate in Black Iron Prison, located on Callisto, one of Jupiter’s moons. When a mysterious outbreak throws the moon into chaos, Jacob must face his darkest fears to defeat the bloodthirsty creatures that stalk him as he unravels the dark mysteries at the heart of the powerful United Jupiter Company.
The trailer “showcases thrilling performances from Transformers star Josh Duhamel as Jacob Lee, The Boys star Karen Fukuhara as Dani Nakamura, and Sam Witwer as Leon Ferris.

This Star Wars: Andor article contains spoilers.
Do you remember when the Andor previews came out and fans were told not to expect any easter eggs? Well, that turned out to be a ruse less convincing than Supreme Chancellor Palpatine not being Darth Sidious. While it’s true that showrunner Tony Gilroy’s spy thriller doesn’t feature the traditional in-your-face fan service, it’s proved to be a much deeper dive into the franchise’s lore than anyone expected. Just watch the latest episode.
While much of “The Axe Forgets” was taken up by Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) and a group of Rebels planning an Imperial payroll heist on Aldhani, a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appearance from Stellan Skarsgård’s Luthen Rael had us asking even more questions about the shadowy mastermind of the Rebellion.

The 2019 open-world action/adventure video game "Days Gone" is getting the big screen treatment from Sony PlayStation Productions, according to Deadline. The PlayStation game from Bend Studios and Sony Interactive Entertainment is set in a post-apocalyptic future in the Pacific Northwest after a pandemic turns people into zombie-like creatures called Freakers. It has sold over nine million units so far, with the lead role of Deacon St. John voiced by Sam Witwer, the voice of Darth Maul in "Star Wars: The Clone Wars," "Star Wars Rebels," and "Solo: A Star Wars Story."
This move comes after the success of Sony's "Uncharted" film, based on the video game of the same name, starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg. "Uncharted" made almost 402 million worldwide, making it the fifth-highest grossing after "Warcraft," "Detective Pikachu," "Rampage," and "Sonic the Hedgehog 2."
Here is everything we know so far about the film adaptation of "Days Gone.

Released in 2019, Bend Studio’s zombie game Days Gone is headed to the big screen, Deadline reports, with Sam Heughan (“Outlander”) currently “circling” the movie adaptation.
Sony PlayStation Productions is behind the Days Gone movie, which has Oscar-nominated scribe Sheldon Turner writing.
Days Gone is “set in the Pacific Northwest after a devastating global pandemic.”
“The game chronicles former motorcycle club member, Deacon St. John, as he fights to survive against the forces of despair and mutated, predatory humans in his quest to find the long lost, presumed dead, love of his life.”
If he lands the role, Sam Heughan would play Deacon St. John.
Deadline also reports, “I hear Turner’s script will be a love ballad to motorcycle movies; the bike being Deacon’s sole form of transportation, his horse in this would-be, modern-day western.”
Vendetta Productions is producing with Sony PlayStation Productions.

When it drops on streaming later this fall, Andor is poised to finally deliver the backstory for one of the best Star Wars characters of the Disney era. The series, which reunites Rogue One star Diego Luna with producer and director Tony Gilroy, explores who Cassian Andor was before he became the revolutionary we met in the first Star Wars standalone film in 2016. How did he go from a refugee insurgent to becoming the Rebellion’s foremost secret agent and assassin?
The new Andor trailer begins to answer these questions, as we watch a younger, angrier Cassian infiltrating the Empire and causing havoc from within, while Mon Mothma and Stellan Skarsgard’s new Star Wars character work in secret from Coruscant. While both parties are working separately at first, Gilroy has teased that they’ll eventually converge in their fight against the Empire.

Despite winning a vital victory against the Empire and the Sith at the end of Fallen Order, life in the galaxy far, far away has only become more dangerous since we last saw these characters, and in the new game, “Cal must stay one step ahead of the Empire’s constant pursuit” if he hopes to survive, according to the official synopsis.

When The Force Unleashed was first announced at E3 2006, it looked poised to be the most ambitious Star Wars game ever made, and 16 years later it is an underrated classic, but it also marked the beginning of the end for Lucasfilm’s legendary game development division, LucasArts. Changes in strategy and restructuring within the company, the lackluster performance of The Force Unleashed II, and a massive sale in 2012 that saw Disney acquire Lucasfilm and all its assets from George Lucas were the final nails in the coffin of the publisher that less than a decade earlier had released Knights of the Old Republic.
But in 2006, there was just our first look at The Force Unleashed, an action-adventure game that promised to unlock the full potential of the Force, whether that meant launching massive waves of electricity from your finger tips, destroying the sci-fi environments around you, or bringing down an...

Spotify has completed casting on its upcoming Batman Unburied scripted podcast series.
Jane the Virgin and Diary of a Future President star Gina Rodriguez will join the cast to voice Barbara Gordon.
The actor, who has featured on Netflix’s animated series Big Mouth, will play the daughter of former police commissioner Jim Gordon and star detective for Gotham Pd. Throughout the series, Barbara will grapple with her own ethics, as she tries to keep within the lines of police work yet is finding herself drawn to Batman’s self-styled method of justice.
She said she was excited to be going on this “sonic adventure” with the “iconic” role.
She joins a cast that already includes Winston Duke as Bruce Wayne and Jason Isaacs as Wayne’s loyal butler and right-hand man, Alfred.

During a recent Reddit Ama, Days Gone voice actor Sam Witwer (who portrayed Deacon St. John) blamed some of the game’s negative reviews on journalists that didn’t finish the game.
“You’re asking me about the review world. That’s not quiiiite the audience,” Witwer says. “I read a review today from a website/publication that will remain nameless. In it, the horde mechanic, the show-stopping center piece of the game, it wasn’t mentioned once. Not Once. There were other tells, but it was pretty clear that this reviewer played the game for several hours and then wrote his review. He did not complete it.”
Witwer goes on to say that the “slow burn” nature of Days Gone means that it’s the type of game that may not lend itself to game reviews and what he presumes to be the nature of the video game review industry.

Darth Maul is one of the most recognizable, visually impressive characters to have emerged from the post-Original Trilogy Star Wars films, despite being dealt a dubious fate in his very first appearance in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. However, it seems that the franchise’s father, George Lucas, originally had plans for the double-bladed lightsaber Sith lord that were far grander than getting sliced in half and sent plummeting down a Naboo air shaft.
While we already know various tidbits about Lucas’s original plans for the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy, some major new info has dropped in The Star Wars Archives 1999–2005 by Paul Duncan, a 600-page behind-the-scenes tome in which Lucas himself lifts the veil on crucial plot details for his never-realized plans to complete his vision of the franchise. Fans are still trying to break down all the Easter Eggs and references from the premiere episode of The Mandalorian season 2. But one, in particular, that managed to get a lot of traction on social media, has turned out to be untrue.
From Knights of the Old Republic to Episode I – The Phantom Menace, “The Marshal” was full of references to other Star Wars stories. Jon Favreau even gave us a glimpse of Boba Fett after more than 30 years and teased his comeback by showing off the bounty hunter’s iconic Beskar armor. It seems, though, that another actor has been making the rounds online for apparently turning up as a Tatooine villager in the season 2 opener.

Ever since his brief and short-lived appearance in the Prequel Trilogy, Darth Maul has turned into one of the most iconic villains in the world of Star Wars. But the process of turning the mindless puppet of Darth Sidious into a compelling character wasn’t as simple as you’d imagine.
Originally, Ray Park and Peter Serafinowicz provided the physical appearance and voice of Maul in The Phantom Menace, respectively. Over the years, though, Lucasfilm turned to another actor to bring the dark-side warrior to life. And so, Sam Witwer and his deep voice slowly took over Maul throughout his scattered roles in the various media set in that galaxy far, far away.
But even within the confines of the narrative, he’s gone through several developments over the course of Dave Filoni’s Star Wars: The Clone Wars. In fact, at one point in the story, Maul goes toe-to-toe with his former master Palpatine.

Amidst the Black Lives Matter protests happening all around the world, some have called on the government to defund police departments, and it seems that the actor behind Darth Maul in Star Wars is all for that idea.
After the tragic killing of George Floyd sparked nationwide, and consequently, global protests, there’ve been a growing number of people who believe that the Americans would be better off without law enforcement, giving rise to the #DefundThePolice movement. With celebrities chiming in on the current situation and even occasionally getting caught in the crossfire, it’s not surprising to see Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Supergirl star Sam Witwer come under fire after he addressed the issue of police brutality on his Twitter feed.
The whole shebang started when Witwer revealed that one of his best friends is a police officer and that they talk about this matter every day.

Throughout the prequels, we saw Darth Sidious discard multiple disposable apprentices. He treated Darth Maul as more of a weapon than a person, discarded Count Dooku once he didn’t need him as a patsy and General Grievous was essentially a distraction to keep the Jedi busy as he prepared to execute Order 66. During all these events, he was grooming Anakin, likely planning to eventually inhabit his body and rule the galaxy.
That plan hit the skids though after Mustafar when Anakin’s body was almost destroyed, resulting in him being transformed into Darth Vader. His new physical limitations meant that Palpatine gave up on plans to use him as a vessel, so why did he go to such great lengths to keep him alive? Let’s face it, it’s not because of his charitable nature.

While most Star Wars fans will recognize Sam Witwer as the voice of Darth Maul in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, the actor really made his franchise debut playing Starkiller in 2008’s third-person action blockbuster, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. Not only was Starkiller the main protagonist at the heart of the game, but Witwer would also go on to reprise his role in the 2010 sequel, too.
Even though The Force Unleashed series sold pretty well, the third follow-up never quite came to fruition. This was mainly due to problems during development, but also thanks to the fact that the Star Wars video game license would ultimately go on to be acquired by EA in 2013.

Regardless of your opinion on the movie, though, these new black and white behind-the-scenes images that the director just posted on social media are a must-see.

Fans are indeed feeling the love, as his Tweet has got nearly 50k likes at the time of writing.
