Ghost stories have been around forever, and will haunt us long after we are ghosts. Before film, most apparitional tales came from novels or short stories. Yes, there were oral traditions of the spooky place down the block or the hitchhiker on a lost highway, but usually someone put it down in a book. Some of the greatest films about hauntings originate as full cinema creations, with a director’s dark vision on the screen, others come from true cases or urban legends. These ghost stories are novel ideas.
This is by no means a complete list. Almost every Edgar Allan Poe film adaptation has a spectral presence; Charles Dickens’ nighttime visitors in A Christmas Carol are only ghosts of presents we wrap for seasonal coverage; director Lew Allen’s 1944 horror feature The Uninvited isn’t here because I haven’t read Dorothy Macardle’s Uneasy Freehold (1941), which it was...

Warning: contains major spoilers for the Anatomy of a Scandal finale.
Legal drama Anatomy of a Scandal is less an exploration of consent than of a personality that assumes consent is a given because why wouldn’t it be when everything else – wealth, looks, status – always has been; a personality who assumes that if there ever is doubt, they’ll receive the benefit of it, because it was ever thus. It’s about the lack of accountability fostered in a class of men raised to believe that having the world at their feet was both their well-earned prize and the natural order. Given the current UK political headlines, that makes it a very timely release. Though this six-part courtroom series centres on a rape trial, it’s far flimsier on sexual assault than it is on its true subject: entitlement.
That much is made clear by the drama’s treatment of character Olivia Lytton,...

David E. Kelley’s latest marital drama puts infidelity and consent on trial.
“Anatomy of a Scandal” stars Sienna Miller as a wife coming to terms with her husband’s cheating. Yet her elite spouse (Rupert Friend) is subsequently accused of assault, putting his position of power as a Minister in Parliament into a tailspin. Meanwhile, Barrister Kate Woodcroft (Michelle Dockery) has her own motivations for prosecuting the case.
As one character puts it in the trailer, “Privilege does not extend to rape.”
The psychological thriller, which premieres April 15, is based on Sarah Vaughan’s bestselling novel of the same name. “The Undoing” creator David E. Kelley executive produces, along with Melissa James Gibson and director S.J. Clarkson.
The ensemble cast includes Naomi Scott, Josette Simon, Geoffrey Streatfeild, Joshua McGuire, Liz White, Nancy Farino, Hannah Dodd, Ben Radcliffe, Jake Simmance, Annie Haworth, Amelie Bea-Smith, and Sebastian Selwood.

"How to change the course of history?" HBO has revealed a full-length trailer for a movie called Brexit, also known as Brexit: The Uncivil War, which is actually a made-for-tv film but we can't help feature it anyway. Benedict Cumberbatch stars in this as Dominic Cummings, the now infamous political strategist who utilized controversial campaigning and social media tactics to successfully (unfortunately) spearhead the "Vote Leave" campaign. For those from America, Cummings seems to be the Steve Bannon of the UK, an outsider who riled up the public to make a rash decision that is still being debated. The cast includes John Heffernan, Rory Kinnear, Liz White, Richard Goulding, Paul Ryan, Oliver Maltman, Nicholas Day, and Lee Boardman. Made by the director of the Emmy-nominated "USS Callister" episode of "Black Mirror". This looks damn good; I dig the freshness of the look and feel, and that it shows all his dirty tricks.

He’s been cast in the role of Dominic Cummings, the leading strategist and Campaign Director of Vote Leave, for a one-off drama series set to explore the behind the scenes goings-on of Brexit, the inescapable term given to the impending withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union.
It promises to be a juicy, if somewhat contentious role for Cumberbatch to sink his teeth into, and he’ll be joined by Rory Kinnear as Craig Oliver, Director of Communications for then-Prime Minister David Cameron, and John Heffernan of The Crown fame. Could the BBC be headed back to Mars? Life on Mars co-creator Ashley Pharoah recently spoke to Digital Spy about a possible revival of the BBC One series.
The UK drama followed Sam Tyler (John Simm), a Manchester policeman who is hit by a car in 2006 and wakes up in 1973. The series also starred Philip Glenister and Liz White. A sequel series, Ashes to Ashes, aired from 2008 to 2010.

This crowdpleasing winner of the Queer Palm at Cannes--where it closed the Directors' Fortnight--centers on the true UK story of a group of eager, streetwise, Lgbt youngsters who in 1984 rallied to support the underserved National Union of Mineworkers, taking their little-campaign-that-could (Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners) from the grassroots level in a small Welsh village to national fame. Warchus' first film in 15 years after 1998's commercially unsuccessful "Simpatico" boasts an impressive glut of rising stars including Joseph Gilgun, Jessie Cave, Freddie Fox, Liz White, Andrew Scott, Russell Tovey and, of course, adorable 22-year-old George MacKay who plays young Joe, the film's in-the-closet, fish-out-of-water hero who lives outside London and is a stranger in this strange land of the city. Across-the-pond regulars include Bill Nighy, Paddy Considine, Imelda Staunton, and a scene-stealing Dominic West as a tortured but life-loving artist living with...

The Great British Bake Off: BBC One, 8pm
Following the national meltdown (sorry) over the Baked Alaska 'bingate' drama last week, Bake Off returns without Iain, or Diana, who dropped out of filming for health reasons.
Emotions are running understandably high as the remaining bakers prepare a selection of pies and tarts, and try their hardest to avoid Mary Berry's least favourite feature: a soggy bottom.
Our Zoo: BBC One, 9pm
Straight after Bake Off comes a heart-warming new period drama on BBC One, which tells the story of the family who founded Chester Zoo.
Appalled at the treatment of the animals at a local circus, ex-soldier George Mottershead (Lee Ingleby) relocates a monkey and a parrot to his parents back yard - much to their distaste. Liz White, Ralf Little, Anne Reid, Sophia Myles and Stephen Campbell Moore (pictured) also star.

From There To Here reaches a dramatic climax this week, tying up all its loose threads into a tidy bow
Feature
This review contains spoilers.
“Families have stories, that’s what keeps them together,” says Samuel Cotton (Bernard Hill should be given British national treasure status) midway through tonight’s final trip to Manchester, this time on the dawn of a new millennium. Peter Bowker’s flawed but overall tender family rigmarole concluded with a fitting final chapter. From There to Here has always been about family right from the beginning and here it reached a peak with the Cottons, secrets spilling out of every aperture.
Continuing directly on from last week’s midpoint, From There to Here picked up with Daniel awakening in his hospital bed to the unity of both his lives – wealthy confectioner Daniel and industrial cleaner Daniel. Claire glowered at him, Joanne was a mixture of confusion,...

From There To Here remains so-so in its second episode. Here's Patrick's review...
Review
This review contains spoilers.
After an uneasy start, the BBC’s latest drama output, From There To Here manages to find its feet early on in this second episode. Starting off more or less where the first finished, From There To Here surreptitiously sidesteps explaining how Daniel survived the explosion in his brother, Robbo’s nightclub (this reviewer was surprised not to find, in Sherlock fashion, a series of humorous, alternative accounts of how Daniel pulled through) and put more focus on Daniel’s double life.
With both Claire and Joanne in the dark about the other (leading to a funny scene in which the pair unwittingly share a lift), Daniel must dash between each woman whilst maintaining his busy work cover story. Each life has something important and director James Strong (doing fine work behind...

This sort of shit makes me physically ill. From Digiday:
Time Inc.’s Entertainment Weekly is the latest publisher to take a platform turn, joining fellow Time Inc. property People and Forbes in following the Huffington Post path of opening up to outside contributors. For EW, that means a contributor network, The Community, to expand its coverage of TV and eventually other areas its staff reporters don’t cover deeply. The idea is familiar: enlist passionate experts to expand coverage — and generate audience at a low cost.
EW will be keeping costs low in the same way that Forbes and HuffPOS do: by not paying those writers. Because why on Earth should a multibillion-dollar global corporation like Time Inc. have to pay its employees? That’s an unnecessary burden on a business.
If you haven’t thrown up yet, this might make you:

Life on Mars, “Episode 1”
Written by Matthew Graham
Directed by Bharat Nalluri
Originally aired January 9, 2006 on BBC One
“I had an accident and I woke up 33 years in the past. Now that either makes me a time traveler or a lunatic or I’m lying in a hospital bed in 2006 and none of this is real.”
Nothing about Life on Mars should have worked. Its premise sounded ridiculous- an English cop gets hit by a car and ends up in the 1970s trying to figure out if he’s crazy or if he really did travel through time. But with “Episode 1”, its pilot, the series hit the ground running, with immediate well-defined characters, an enthralling plot, witty dialogue, and an intriguing mix of sci-fi and character study.
“Episode 1” starts in 2006 and finds detective Sam Tyler (John Simm) hunting for a serial killer. After his girlfriend, a fellow cop, is kidnapped,...

Review by Andrew MacArthur of The Peoples Movies
Viewers may initially be taken aback when seeing the credits of upcoming British feature uwantme2killhim? What appears as a low-key thriller actually has some big Hollywood names behind it – including Bryan Singer and Bob and Harvey Weinstein. This should serve an indicator as to the promise that Andrew Douglas’ (2005′s The Amityville Horror) feature shows.
Based on a true story, the film details teenager Mark’s (Jamie Blackley) growing obsession with the world of internet chatrooms and the dark, tragic consequences this ultimately builds up to.
The early stages of the film feature Mark on a chat-room speaking to cyber-girlfriend Rachel (Jaime Winston) who asks the teenager to look out for her “weird” brother John (Toby Regbo) who is bullied at school.

Dedicated television viewers know that there will always be shows that everyone wants you to watch, either it’s a cult show, a show that ended way before it’s time, or seems to grab everyone’s attention but yours. However many viewers find themselves stumbling upon these shows either years later or late into a shows run. I’ve compiled a list of ten shows, published once a week, that have become classics or are on their way to doing so and have recently been discovered by this writer.

At the end of a bumper year for film-making, Guardian film critic Peter Bradshaw unveils the contenders for his very own – imaginary – film awards
Most critics compile year-end roundups in a mood of shrugging acceptance that not every year can be great. But actually 2012 has been vintage, with some really brilliant films from the biggest names doing their best work – and some fascinating documentaries. So once again, I have created my imaginary awards nominations in the following categories: best film, best director, best actor, best actress, best supporting actor, best supporting actress, best documentary and best screenplay. You will have to imagine me, in full tuxedo-style evening wear announcing the Braddies at the Dorchester. (I have put Seth MacFarlane, Michael Haneke and Kylie Minogue on my table.)
So, the nominations are …
Best film
Amour (dir. Michael Haneke)
The Master (dir. Paul Thomas Anderson)
Holy Motors (dir. Leos Carax)
Killing Them Softly (dir.

Everyone knows John Lennon could write a song like no one else. But on what would have been Lennon's 72nd birthday (and what is Sean Lennon's 37th!), we tip our hat to the legendary singer's other artistic talents. Not only was the Liverpudlian a famously quick song writer, he was also a prolific visual artist, churning out hundreds of whimsical line drawings that range from musings on Beatles' song titles, to depictions of him and Yoko Ono, often in Nsfw disarray. In 1970, some of Lennon's more risque lithographs were seized and even ordered to be burned by a judge in Oak Park, Illinois, where they'd traveled for an exhibit.
Lennon's art training began in earnest in the 1950s, when he attended the Liverpool College of Art (his future wife Cynthia, and Beatles' bassist Stuart Suttcliffe were fellow classmates). The building where Lennon studied made headlines this year when Paul McCartney...

Wild Bill
Stars: Charlie Creed-Miles, Will Poulter, Liz White, Leo Gregory, Andy Serkis, Olivia Williams | Written by Danny King, Dexter Fletcher | Directed by Dexter Fletcher
Wild Bill has the dubious honour of being part of that most squiffy of sub-genres, the ‘geezer’ picture. Pioneered by Guy Ritchie, the trademarks of this unfortunate film are: a London (usually East End, always rough) location; ‘realistic’ hard bloke dialogue that thinks it’s a lot cleverer than it is, thus rendering it interminably grating and (worse still) boring; a token foreign accent for, y’know, tolerance and stuff. Oh, and there’s a black guy in it too! But he’s a drug dealer. And he runs away from the final fight, so he’s a coward too; at least one punch-up in a pub (see above); fancy camera movements performed in order to give a sense of stylistic awareness but really just...

News that the actor Dexter Fletcher was to make his directorial debut with a London-bound tale of old lags out on parole led some to speculate that the film would owe a debt to Guy Ritchie's geezery oeuvre. Yet a more accurate touchstone for the surprisingly tender Wild Bill (2011, Universal, 15) would be the films of Shane Meadows, with which this shares both a tough edge and a soft heart. Charlie Creed-Miles stars as the eponymous ex-con whose release from prison is met with dismay by his son, Dean (Will Poulter), who has been acting in loco parentis to younger brother Jimmy (Sammy Williams) for years. The Woman In Black
Stars: Daniel Radcliffe, Ciarán Hinds, Liz White, Janet McTeer | Written by Jane Goldman | Directed by James Watkins
The film adaptation of The Woman In Black is kind of a big deal in little ways. It’s based on a well-known and loved book, which was also the inspiration for one of the longest running plays in the West End. And of course, it’s Daniel Radcliffe’s first film after the end of the Harry Potter series.
As book-to-screen adaptations go, Jane Goldman’s script is possibly one of the most unfaithful I can think of. Not in a bad way though, for the big screen it makes sense to add and change things. The basic ghost story is the same, but it plays out a little differently, and details here and there have been altered. The book and play have a much simpler, very-British ghost story,...

Daniel Radcliffe, The Woman in Black
The Woman in Black sequel — has a plot. Jon Croker, a story editor in the first film, is writing the new — and apparently original — Hammer Films project. Jane Goldman wrote the first Woman in Black adaptation, which was based on Susan Hill’s novel.
According to a synopsis found at Shock Till You Drop, the Woman in Black sequel centers on a "beautiful young nurse" striving to help World War II soldiers suffering from combat trauma and other psychological ailments. As if the soldiers’ mental woes weren’t enough, the Woman in Black has begun haunting the local military hospital.
No director, cast, or titles — “The Woman in Black 2″? “The Return of the Woman in Black”? “The Curse of the Woman in Black”? “The Woman in Black Strikes Back”? — have been announced as yet.

Chicago – Nothing jars an audience quite like the sudden appearance of a fearsome apparition in a dimly lit room. Even hokey thrillers like William Castle’s “House on Haunted Hill” still manage to make viewers jump from their seats by using this reliable horror standby. “The Woman in Black” has one such moment, but it is surrounded by a murky sea of grim tedium.
This is a sleepy little haunted house picture that proves to be the worst possible post-“Potter” role for Daniel Radcliffe, who was straining to distance himself from the boy wizard even while completing the phenomenally successful franchise. His stage work has given him ample opportunities to take bold risks. His singing and dancing in Broadway’s “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” raised nearly as many eyebrows as his nude scene in London’s “Equus” revival. Yet his screen roles outside of Hogwarts...
