Director Phil Barantini has become one of my go-to directors in terms of pure quality homegrown filmmaking. From my introduction to his work with Craig Fairbrass driven feature Villian, the short movie Seconds Out and the outrageously brilliant Stephen Graham powerhouse one shot, Boiling Point, I’m beginning to get the feeling we can group this man with some of our favourite British directors.
Whether we are spending time with an ageing con fresh out of prison, an alcoholic head chef on the busiest night of the year or Tim from The Office working the streets of Liverpool, we are sucked into these worlds because the stories are real, the performances are raw and a lot of the time they feel like they are happening right outside your front door.

Picking up where Series 5 of the TV show left off, Luther: The Fallen Sun sees Idris Elba’s brilliant but disgraced copper breaking out of the slammer to hunt down serial killer David Robey (Andy Serkis). A twisted tech genius with dodgy hair and an even dodgier fashion sense, Robey is luring his victims by hijacking their digital footprints and using their deepest, darkest secrets – or as he calls it, their “shame” – against them.
Robey is one of the franchise’s creepiest and most sadistic baddies. Not only is he able to properly go toe-to-toe with Luther both physically and mentally, but his vast resources allow him to carry out his crimes on a much grander scale than we’re used to seeing – think a very, very messed-up Bond villain.
Luckily, Dci John Luther – equipped with his signature grey coat and blood-red tie – is on hand to save the day,...

Luther’s back. Being banged up at the end of Series 5 didn’t stop that growly genius from taking on a new case and a new villain in Bond-inspired Netflix movie The Fallen Sun. And, since most of his former colleagues were spectacularly killed in the line of duty, the man’s being joined by a fresh cast.
Dermot Crowley returns as John Luther’s former boss Dsu Martin Schenk, who’s joined by Cynthia Erivo as Luther’s replacement on the team, and far from his biggest fan. Going toe-to-toe with Idris Elba’s John will be Andy Serkis as surveillance tech billionaire David Robey, possibly the detective’s darkest foe yet.
And what of Ruth Wilson’s Alice, last seen taking a short drop off a tall tower? She’s not listed among the cast this time, but there’s no saying that wily brainbox won’t find...

It's titled Luther: The Fallen Sun and it will be getting an official theatrical release in late February before it's out for streaming on Netflix in March. Big news for fans of this show! Haunted by his failure to capture the cyber psychopath who now taunts him, Luther will finish the job by any means necessary. Idris Elba returns as John Luther, co-starring along with Cynthia Erivo, Andy Serkis, and Dermot Crowley, who returns as Martin Schenk. There was a time — way before the reality-tv chaos of “Top Chef,” “Hell’s Kitchen” and their ilk, and the ubiquitous trend for open restaurant kitchens — when most of us didn’t think all that much about the labor and drama behind the scenes of eating out. Now, we probably overcook the theater of fine dining in our imaginations: Not every perfectly done steak has been screamed over as part of the seasoning.
After a year when many of us have missed out on the restaurant experience, along comes “Boiling Point” to re-whet our appetite for its flash and sizzle. Presented as one continuous 90-minute take, Philip Barantini’s thoroughly absorbing film plunges the audience into one hectic Christmastime service at a high-end restaurant in East London, juggling a dizzy array of courses, characters and subplots that range from plausibly high-stakes to wildly contrived.
Even at its most far-fetched, however,...
