Cradle of Filth guitarist Marek “Ashok” Šmerda is getting married to the band’s keyboardist/vocalist Zoë M. Federoff.
Federoff joined Cradle of Filth in 2022 following the exit of Annabelle Iratni, while Ashok has been with the symphonic black metal act since 2014. Cradle of Filth are known for creating extreme metal, but the band does have gothic/romantic leanings with “love songs” such as “A Gothic Romance (Red Roses for The Devil’s Whore)” and “Dusk and Her Embrace.”
Federoff took to Instagram to share news of her engagement to the guitarist:
“Happy New Year from a Šmerda and a future Šmerda-2024 will be the last year the name ‘Zoë Federoff’ exists. Forever isn’t long enough. #HappyNewYear #AreWeThereYet”.
There have apparently been some misgivings about the engagement among the band’s fanbase. In separate follow-up post, Federoff addressed those who have been “speculating and spreading rumors” about the couple and...

Dez Fafara, frontman of the bands DevilDriver and Coal Chamber, has revealed that he currently is unable to tour overseas because of heart problems that arose from his 2021 battle with Covid.
DevilDriver are currently touring the States with Cradle of Filth, and Coal Chamber were recently announced as direct support on Mudvayne’s summer 2023 outing. While Dez has been cleared to play stateside gigs, he can’t get on a flight anytime soon.
The singer revealed his condition as DevilDriver pulled out of the UK’s Bloodstock Open Air festival, explaining as follows:
“In 2021, I came down with Covid which left me with heart problems. I had to live downstairs in my house, as I could barely walk more than a few feet without collapsing. I, in fact was saying goodbye to my family at the time and didn’t think I would pull through.

Cradle of Filth have unveiled a new single titled “She Is a Fire” and announced their first live album in 20 years, Trouble and Their Double Lives, arriving April 28th.
The studio track “She Is a Fire” will be included as a bonus track on the upcoming live record, along with another new song, “Demon Prince Regent.” These tunes were written following the recording of the band’s latest album, 2021’s Existence Is Futile. As Dani Filth describes them, the songs “present a perfect, but not necessarily related, bridge between our Nuclear Blast days and the forthcoming album on Napalm Records.”
A furious six-minute piece, “She Is a Fire” is an unrelenting exercise in technical black metal as riffs unfurl from one another in a torrent of notes. Dani Filth’s whispery howl provides properly unsettling accompaniment.
“The song itself is about the epitome of burning passion,” he said in the press release,...

As Baphomet opens, a Satanic cult sacrifices a naked woman while their leader Henrik Brandr promises soon they won’t have to hide in the shadows. It’s an ominous opening, only slightly marred by Brandr seeming to pronounce the ruler of Hell’s name as “Satin”.
Whatever the cult has planned involves a ranch owned by Jacob Richardson and his wife Elena (Ivy Opdyke; Hide the Monster). Brandr sends his son Askel to convince them to sell. He doesn’t manage that, but a picture of their pregnant daughter Rebecca (Rebecca Weaver) and her husband Mark (Matthan Harris) catches his eye.

Due to a variety of circumstances, I’d unfortunately missed out on the past few major events to reside under the MeggaXP umbrella. In an effort to correct this, I made arrangements to check out this year’s edition of Blood Bash, one of the better horror conventions one could hope to find in Michigan. Once again setting up shop at the Commonwealth Commerce Center in Jackson, it’d obviously grown since its debut in 2017.
For starters, I could swear there were more vendors and crafters on hand than I’d seen when I was last there two years ago. Though this celebration of the macabre differs from the larger MeggaXP insofar that it’s confined to one showroom, there was certainly much to explore. Furthermore, video and tabletop gaming were other options presented, not to mention horror-themed carnival games which yielded tickets allowing the victors a chance to win...

Long-time FEARnet fave Dani Filth (aka Daniel Davey), best known as the founder and vocalist for iconic metal band Cradle of Filth, has now stepped in as official vocalist for another horror-themed metal band in the UK. The group Devilment, formed in 2011 by guitarist Daniel Finch, was having difficulty locking down a permanent lineup. The band finalized their instrumental core in late 2012, recruiting Dan Jackson on lead guitar, bassist Nick Johnson, and Aaron Boast behind the drumkit; they were still seeking a vocalist when Dani offered his services. What began as a few tracks with Dani's vocals on the band's studio demo Grotescapology turned into eight demo tracks in all, including titles like “Psycho Babble,” “Bloodlust, Rust and Empire,” “Even Your Blood Group Rejects Me,” “I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream" (based on a horrifying story by Harlan Ellison), “Mother Kali” and “Staring at the Werewolf Corps.” While recording is still in progress,...

We're back again with the third chapter in our ongoing feature on vintage Italian cinema thrillers, and since we've previously covered titles from Lucio Fulci (Don't Torture a Duckling) and Mario Bava (A Bay of Blood), it's time we examined a film from the final member of the genre's “Big Three,” Dario Argento. While Argento's most beloved work is unquestionably the stunning 1977 horror classic Suspiria, which was set in a dreamlike supernatural world, he was previously most famous for his pioneering approach to the giallo genre, beginning with the stylish The Bird with the Crystal Plumage – the huge success of which earned him the nickname “The Italian Hitchcock,” a handle he didn't particularly care for at the time. After that film, audiences craved more thrillers with Dario's eccentric touch, leading to what is loosely described as his “Animal Trilogy,” in that all of the titles include the name of an...

It's a dilemma all music lovers face: narrowing down a list of your all-time favorite albums. Even restricting myself to just the past year, it's quite a challenge... mainly because it's been a damn fine year for dark, spooky and horror-related music. Not only have some well-known bands rediscovered their mojo or improved on an already strong track record, but I've also discovered dozens of new artists who rock the darker, more obscure corners of the music biz, and many of them belong on this list right alongside their more high-profile peers. I'm also pretty sure you'll be hearing a lot more from them in 2013 and beyond. Bear in mind a couple of things before diving in: this list is alphabetical, and not necessarily in order of preference (because I always have a shit time trying to settle on my favorite anything); and this list is confined to horror-related or darker-themed music,...

Even before Pennsylvania-based metal unit Motionless in White released their debut full-length album Creatures, they had already grabbed my attention... and not just because frontman Chris Motionless and I happen to own the same Bauhaus t-shirt. It turns out Chris is a huge horror fan, and much of the band's music is directly inspired by horror stories and movies. My first taste of their dark, intense gothic hardcore came three years ago with a sick cover of Rob Zombie's “Dragula,” which impressed the hell out of me. The album's arrival the following year both met and exceeded my expectations, and their rapidly growing fanbase exploded in response. For example, when FEARnet premiered the band's controversial video “Immaculate Misconception” – directed by Cody Snider, son of Twisted Sister's Dee Snider (who also played a small role) – it became an overnight viral sensation. [If you somehow missed that one, you can still watch it right here.] So when the band announced the impending arrival...

Declaring this their “Tenth Commandment in Metal,” UK legends (and long-time FEARnet faves) Cradle of Filth have diverged from their usual game plan of sweeping concept albums, choosing this time to divide and conquer a wide assortment of sinister subjects – everything from classics of erotic literature to creepy fairy tales, monsters of myth & legend, the timeless horrors of H.P. Lovecraft, and a few beasts of their very own creation. While all of this falls within the band's usual lyrical domain, their songwriting and production approach on The Manticore calls back to their '90s black metal origins, while retaining just enough of the band's well-known cinematic elements to keep their gothic stamp on it. “We have diversified and kept alive the spirit of this band,” says band frontman & founder Dani Filth, “and breathed it into something that I can proudly say, slays like an absolute motherfucker.” Sounds like a fairly confident statement to me.

Okay, full disclosure time: I've been a fan of Claudio Simonetti and his musical projects ever since I experienced the opening minutes of Suspiria, which is also the first film by Dario Argento ever to flash before my stunned eyeballs. A couple of decades have passed since then, but I have yet to hear any music from Claudio and his various collaborators that I didn't enjoy – including scores to films I've long since forgotten, and a few I haven't even seen yet. Among the latter is the latest Argento epic to feature Simonetti's music: the much-talked-about Dracula 3D. This isn't the first time I've reviewed the score to an Argento film before seeing the film itself: I also had the unique pleasure of reviewing Simonetti's wonderfully bizarre gothic rock opera soundtrack to The Mother of Tears long before the film's international release. Sure, that movie caught unholy hell from a lot of outraged horror fans,...

If you hang out here a lot (and you should... all the cool kids do), you've probably heard plenty of interesting news about the UK's legendary metal outfit Cradle Of Filth and their cinematic sounds of darkness. Long before the symphonic metal wave surged across Europe, frontman Dani Filth and his crew were employing vast orchestral backdrops for their savage riffs, thunderous beats and demonic vocals. While most of this material has been performed on keyboards using layers of samples, some of their grander-scale concept albums like 2003's Damnation and a Day have incorporated massive live orchestras and full choirs. When I chatted with Dani recently, we talked about the band's latest project Midnight in the Labyrinth,...

Ever since forming in Suffolk in 1991, Dani Filth's Cradle of Filth have been one of England’s highest profile extreme metal bands. Over the years their musical style has evolved from a classic black metal sound to a cleaner, more "produced" mixture of Gothic metal, symphonic black metal and other extreme metal styles. Thematically the band’s imagery has pretty much remained the same: one that is heavily influenced by Gothic literature, poetry, mythology, sex and horror films.
In early November, 2010, after having already released eight albums and assorted E.P.s, they put out their newest record, the lushly evocative Darkly, Darkly, Venus Aversa, which is a concept album based on the legend of the lascivious demoness and wife of the Biblical Adam, Lilith. Lady Gaga's music is an eclectic blend of high-octane sugar pop, funky post-modern R&B, borrowed European dance styles and a healthy dose of whatever-the-hell-she-feels-like. There is not, however, a great deal of metal that sneaks into Gaga's music, no matter how loud you crank up "Bad Romance." Of course, that didn't stop the Demonstration from recording a great metal version of that same song.
Gaga's taste also skews pretty heavy, as she has expressed her enthusiasm for Black Sabbath in the past, telling Ryan Seacrest that one of the highlights of her old burlesque show was a dance that was set to that band's "Black Sabbath" (which we still say must have been incredibly odd and difficult to pull off). While in Germany on tour, Gaga told reporters that she is also a big Metallica fan (she said that her only other trip to the venue where she...

Legendary UK metallers Cradle of Filth have announced their return to the studio to record their next album All Hallows Eve – slated for release this October (oddly enough) under the indie label Peaceville Records. Another ambitious concept album in the mode of their earlier tributes to notorious figures like Countess Bathory (Cruelty and the Beast) and Gilles de Rais (2008's Godspeed on the Devil's Thunder), the new record will be based on the legend of demoness Lilith, legendary first wife of Adam. More info lurks below, so turn the page! According to the latest announcement from Peaceville, the current lineup of Cradle of Filth – comprised of founder/frontman Dani Filth, guitarists Paul Allender &...

*FAQs:
Q: Is this a sexist contest?
A: Yes.
Q: Isn't that hypocritical of Pretty/Scary?
A: Well, we're using irony and sweet sweet sarcasm to point out how ridiculous contests like these really are. We're actually trying to show how, when reversed, these kind of cheesecake genre layouts and interviews are really pretty silly and unnecessary. It is intended to be lighthearted and funny, while celebrating these men's careers in genre film.
Q: Do the men know what they're being interviewed for?
A: Yes, the interviewees are all in on the joke.

Few rule the Metal realm like Cradle Of Filth. Between a musical catalog big enough to fill a mom and pop record shop (it's still growing may I add), an extended assortment of controversial merchandise and the constant media coverage, it's practically impossible to have missed the Metal phenomenon fronted by former Metal Hammer Magazine contributing writer Dani Filth.
Filth, who's played a hand in just about every aspect of entertainment you can imagine, has once again temporarily sidestepped the extremely familiar Musical Avenue, traveling rather, down Literature Lane. His latest venture, an historical look at horror, it's documented conception, and profound influence upon the Metal genre - particularly Cradle Of Filth - comes to us in the form of a beautifully articulate book co-written by world renown Satanist Gavin Baddeley.
The book features more than history and band facts however. In store for readers is a wealth of Dani's poetic passages,...

If you're a fan of macabre music, the following thought has probably crossed your mind: how many artists who write, compose and perform songs about vampires, demons, serial killers and occult mysteries actually live the lifestyle they portray in their music? Do they wash off the corpse paint, unstrap the spikes and knock off for a beer, or do they retreat backstage to their private ritual altar to chainsaw groupies in blood sacrifices to Baal or Cthulhu or some other dark deity? I naively used to suspect that UK metal icons Cradle Of Filth might be from the latter group, then started leaning more toward the former... then realized that I was way off the mark on both counts. If you talk to band founder/frontman Dani Filth, you'll...

Either you’re a Cradle of Filth fan, or you’re not, but even if you don’t listen to the music of the amazing metal band fronted by Dani Filth (sort of a cross between a musician, an evil warlock, and a British person), you won’t be able to deny Dani’s filthy charm. The dark enforcer of heavy metal and all things darkness has a surprisingly funny side to go along with his incontrovertible sex appeal. In 2003 he voiced the "Dominator" in the feature-length animated film of the same name and starred in the horror film Cradle of Fear. You can hear his collaborative work with Claudio Simonetti and the band Daemonia on the soundtrack of the Argento horror film The Mother of Tears. Now Dani’s latest creation, The Gospel of Filth, is causing us to get our panties in a tizzy. This collection of essays on the occult,...

The "all encompassing compendium of all things dark and taboo" will appropriately see a release on Halloween.

The history of Cradle of Filth is but the linchpin that ties the expansiveness of The Gospel of Filth together. With over 500 pages of content, the book reveals the unspoken and debaucherous...

UK metal legends Cradle of Filth issued an official statement Tuesday regarding an unfortunate event that cut short their set at the Bloodstock Open Air festival in Derbyshire, England last Saturday: guitarist Paul Allender was struck by a heavy object thrown by an audience member – a blow which landed him in the hospital. Understandably, the band's a mite peeved about the whole incident, and said as much on their official site... "This was due to a selfish and stupid person in the crowd," the band stated in yesterday's site update, describing how fans had begun lobbing one-pound hard candies called "gobstoppers" at them, narrowly missing vocalist Dani Filth, keyboardist Ashley Ellyllon, Dani's...

UK's monolithic metallers Cradle of Filth have announced the imminent arrival of their coolest chunk of swag ever: an epic tome entitled The Gospel of Filth: The Definitive Guide to the Realms of Darkness and Devilry. More than a document of the band's tumultuous history, the upcoming volume is something altogether different – described by the band as "the boldest, most comprehensive and authoritative guide to the realms of darkness and devilry ever published." That's a pretty tall order, even for a group that spends a helluva lot of time exploring the dark side (and the rest of the time at the pub). Frontman Dani Filth and his creepy crew did manage to reveal some details about the book on their blog, and...
