What's Netflix thrown up for us this week? "Knights of the Zodiac" of course! What is that? Well, I'll be honest, I had no idea either. But I've taken a quick look-see and as it turns out, this Japanese fantasy film is proving pretty popular with Netflixers stateside.
A live-action adaptation of Masami Kurumada's manga, "Saint Seya," "Knights of the Zodiac" stars Japanese actor Mackenyu, alongside Madison Iseman and Nick Stahl. The film is also noteworthy for reuniting Sean Bean and Famke Janssen almost 30 years after they shared the screen in "GoldenEye." Co-produced by Toei and directed by "The Witcher" illustrator/producer Tomasz Tomek Bagiński, the film also features stunt and fight choreography from former Jackie Chan stunt team member and the man behind the action in Marvel's "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings," Andy Cheng.

A few new titles open this weekend, some quite moderately, in the hopes of offering something unique to rival “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.” Remember, it’s Mother’s Day on Sunday, where the moms get to pick the movie for once. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
Regardless of the number of new entries this weekend, Marvel’s “Guardians,” directed by James Gunn, will remain above the rest with a second weekend of around $50 million or more, capitalizing on positive word-of-mouth from audiences from its opening.
Released by Focus Features into 3,000 theaters is the comedy sequel “Book Club: The Next Chapter,” once again starring Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candace Bergen and Mary Steenburgen, along with Andy Garcia, Don Johnson and Craig T. Nelson. In the movie, once again written and directed by Bill Holderman and Erin Simms, Bergen’s Sharon is getting married, and her...

Fans at Comic-Con will Saturday get a fresh taste of Sony’s “Knights of the Zodiac,” a fantasy action film based on the popular Japanese “Saint Seiya” manga and anime series.
Tomek Baginski directs a diverse cast headed by Famke Janssen and Sean Bean, as well as American-born Japanese sensation Mackenyu in the title role as Pegasus Seiya.
For Toei Animation, the Japanese studio behind the properties, the effort is the result of a decade-long strategic overhaul. And putting together the 60 million first leg in a major movie franchise took a circuitous route through Hungary and Covid disruptions. Toei Animation international producer Ikezawa Yoshi explains the journey.
Variety: What was the corporate or strategic point of view that led Toei Animation to make the live action “Knights of the Zodiac”?
Ikezawa: Today when you run an animation studio, especially the size of those in the Japanese industry, profit potential is limited.

Mackenyu, the mononymous Japanese actor, and Madison Iseman are set to headline "Knights of the Zodiac," a live-action adaptation of the manga, "Saint Seya," by Masami Kurumada. It's the supporting cast, however, that might be of interest to James Bond fans, since it reunites Sean Bean and Famke Janssen from "GoldenEye."
It's been over 25 years since Janssen's character, Xenia Onatopp, squeezed men to death with her thighs in "GoldenEye." She was a henchwoman for Bean's crime syndicate leader, Alec Trevelyan, who started out as 006, Bond's friend and fellow agent, only to fake his death and go rogue.

Get ready to learn how to say “what the hell just happened?” in Japanese. “Neon Genesis Evangelion,” one of the most acclaimed — and straight up weird — works in anime history, will be available to stream globally for the first time when it debuts on Netflix in 2019.
The announcement came during Netflix’s Anime Lineup Presentation, held Tuesday in Tokyo.
Produced by Gainax and Tatsunoko Production, “Neon Genesis Evangelion” originally aired on TV Tokyo from October 1995 to March 1996. Set in the far-future year of 2015, the show tracks a war between humans, defended by pilots who control giant bio-machines called “Evangelions,” and aliens called “Angels.” Drawing imagery from Kabbalah, Christianity and Judaism, “Evangelion” is particularly celebrated — and notorious — for its insane ending. The uninitiated can watch the teaser trailer above.
