Michael Silver, the dean of East Coast-based network publicity executives, has resigned after a 39-year run at CBS. Silver surprised many journalists and colleagues Wednesday by announcing his retirement in a characteristically witty e-mail message that opened with a line borrowed from Groucho Marx, "Hello, I must be going". Silver bade dozens of electronic and print journalists a fond farewell in the message by urging them to "Keep the bastards nervous, always find two independent sources and ask-ask-ask." During his many years at the eye network, Silver held publicity posts in a range of divisions, from CBS News to the corporate office to entertainment to the flagship WCBS-TV station in New York. Silver, who joined CBS in October 1964, most recently was director of communications.
