He previously worked as an executive for Shell Oil. On 6 March 1988, when he was on holiday in Gibraltar, he was an eye-witness to the SAS shooting of three IRA suspects. This affected him so profoundly that he decided on a complete change of career, and became a writer for BBC radio programmes such as I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue.
