What works theatrically? And how do you turn a ‘no’ into a ‘yes’ for a passion project in an everchanging entertainment landscape where there’s a push and pull between the big screen and streaming?
On today’s Crew Call we talk with Susan Downey and Amanda Burrell of Team Downey, who are behind the HBO limited Park Chan-wook series The Sympathizer, about knocking down walls in today’s Hollywood in order to get smart, elevated projects off the ground.
Says Burrell, who is the President of Team Downey, “Our job is to get people to say yes and that’s with our passion, with our pushing.”
Adds Downey, “The marketplace is fickle, everybody is trying to get people in theaters, or in this case, watching on their streamer…So many things contribute to you getting a ‘yes’ (on a project). Even Robert gives us a ‘No’.”

Sunday’s episode of “The Sympathizer” saw The Captain (Hoa Xuande) go to work as an interpreter on auteur Nikos’ (Robert Downey Jr.) film about the Vietnam War.
Co-showrunner Park Chan-wook revealed in an interview with TheWrap that one key change that the series made from Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pultizer Prize-winning source material was moving the location of the film’s set from the Philippines to California.
“I think in the original novel, because it’s inspired by ‘Apocalypse Now,’ they changed the Philippines into Vietnam. But because of the financial restraints, we set this in California and changed that into Vietnam for this movie set,” Chan-wook said. “I think in hindsight, it turned out better in terms of our creative aspect… we were able to bring in our secondary characters into our story to have them play the...

When “The Sympathizer” showrunner and director Park Chan-Wook brainstormed ideas for HBO’s newest miniseries, one scene struck him as a “quintessential American institution and represented the idea of America.” It took place in a steakhouse with several characters coming together.
Based on the best-selling novel by Viet Thanh Nguyen and set at the end of the Vietnam War, “The Sympathizer” follows a captain, played by Hoa Xuande, in the South Vietnamese army who’s secretly spying for the North Vietnamese communists. As Saigon falls and the U.S. retreats, the Captain remains embedded and escapes to Los Angeles. Throughout, Robert Downey Jr. pops up as various characters who interact with the Captain including Claude, the Captain’s CIA contact, as well as a professor, a congressman and an auteur.

The series is an espionage thriller and cross-culture satire about the struggles of a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy during the final days of the Vietnam War and his resulting exile in the United States. Hoa Xuande leads the series, with Fred Nguyen Khan, Toan Le, Vy Le, Alan Trong, Vy Le, Ky Duyen, and Sandra Oh. Robert Downey Jr. pops up in multiple roles, but could they all be the same character in disguise?...

The limited series, based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, is part spy thriller and part satire. Ever since Robert Downey Jr.'s Sherlock Holmes typed that question mark after the words "The End" in 2011's "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows," we've all been expecting him to return for another round of sleuthing. In the years following that sequel's half a billion dollar success at the box office, we kept hearing about plans for a follow-up that never actually materialized.
In 2018, Dr. John Watson actor Jude Law revealed that the "Sherlock Holmes 3" plot was supposed to "propel the story forward," and "play up the fact that [Holmes and Watson] haven't seen each other for a long time." That made sense, since the second movie released all the way back in 2011, so there would need to be some acknowledgement of time passing between stories. But since then, even more time has passed, bringing only more delays.

There will be no more bombshells in Los Angeles' courtrooms.
Deadline reported that HBO has opted not to renew Perry Mason for a third season.
The news comes close to two months after Season 2 bowed out.
“We are tremendously grateful for the remarkable work of Matthew Rhys and the unrivaled cast and crew of Perry Mason for their reimagining of such a treasured and storied franchise,” HBO said in a statement to Deadline.
“While we won’t be moving forward with another season of the series, we are excited to continue working with the brilliant creatives at Team Downey on future projects,” the statement concluded.
While the news is shocking, it is not surprising because of the significant delay on HBO's part in dishing out a third season renewal after or during Perry Mason Season 2.

“Perry Mason” has been canceled at HBO, Variety has confirmed. The series debuted its second and final season at the premium cabler in March.
“We are tremendously grateful for the remarkable work of Matthew Rhys and the unrivaled cast and crew of ‘Perry Mason’ for their reimagining of such a treasured and storied franchise,” HBO said in a statement. “While we won’t be moving forward with another season of the series, we are excited to continue working with the brilliant creatives at Team Downey on future projects.”
Based on the characters created by Erle Stanley Gardner, Matthew Rhys starred in the series in the title role. Unlike the 1950’s TV series in which Mason worked as a lawyer, the HBO series portrays the character earlier in his life when he is a private investigator in Los Angeles in the 1930s.

“Our job is to fight for the show,” reveals executive producer Susan Downey on the goal for any good producer on series like their period drama “Perry Mason” and fantasy “Sweet Tooth.” For our recent webchat alongside her Team Downey partner Amanda Burrell, she adds, “We’re trying to be critical and trying to make sure we’re keeping the true north and supporting the vision of our showrunners and our filmmakers, and if you’re taking risks along the way and you’re doing things that you know make you a little bit nervous, then that’s certainly what we strive for. But you really hope that they work. So, it is nice to finally get Season 2 of both shows out into the world and see that people have been responding favorably.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Sony offered up the first footage from “The Equalizer 3” as part of their CinemaCon presentation, and you can now watch the sequel’s red-band trailer online below.
It’s the first and only franchise for old-school movie star Denzel Washington. It’s an unapologetic IP cash-in (“The Equalizer” aired on CBS from 1985 to 1989) where the actual star+concept hook – Washington as essentially “Righteous Revenger Man” – is a bigger selling point than the IP. Washington remains a butts-in-seats draw partially because he never allowed himself to be defined by IP or marquee characters. Like Leonardo DiCaprio and Sandra Bullock, the actor *is* the franchise.
Tom Rothman noted at the start of this presentation that many of his competitors believe that the movie star is no more, a notion that Rothman hopes to prove is entirely wrong. Before we even got the footage, Denzel Washington was presented with the 2023 Lifetime Achievement...

It’s been more than 10 years since Robert Downey Jr.’s Sherlock Holmes informed us that “A Game of Shadows” wasn’t necessarily the end. And though it’s been a long road, his wife and fellow producer says that that remains true.
“Sherlock Holmes 3” was first announced back in 2018, with a planned release date of Christmas 2020. In March 2019, it was pushed back to 2021. But of course, it is indeed 2023 and the threequel still hasn’t seen much movement. As of this week, Dexter Fletcher, who was attached to direct the film, said it’s “not currently” in development, and that he doesn’t “know where [Downey Jr.’s] appetite for it is.”
Well, during an appearance on WrapWomen’s “UnWrapped” this week, Team Downey producer — and Rdj’s wife — Susan Downey, alongside her producing partner Amanda Burrell, confirmed that the project is still very much in the foreground for everyone involved.
