There was a time when West Indies cricket was the epitome of the game. The carefree and calypso style of fun-loving and unconventional but skilful approach to the game was a treat to watch.
The West Indians played to mesmerize and entertain the crowd without a care about the result. Genius was the word used by many of their players and it fit the bill perfectly especially for one of theirs, the greatest cricketer ever to play the game, Sir Garfield Sobers.
The Indian team touring the West Indies at present were privileged to shake the hands of the great man, one who could bat, bowl, field and even keep wickets at the highest level.
The word “Bazball” has now become a mantra for the England side in their quest to play attacking and attractive cricket. It takes one back to the famous 1961 Test series between Australia and the West Indies Down Under.

Cricket has never had such an enormous and variable audience and therefore, quite rightly so, a plethora of ideas and innovations are cropping up to make the game even more interesting. The famous marketing line of a “customer is always right” is the mantra that the cricketers and the marketeers are vociferously following. The cricket fans want action, glamour, heroes and trend setters and the T20 format is ideally suited to provide that.
The changes in the rules of cricket, therefore, are being gradually tested on the shorter format of the game and in tournaments that are independently run, like the Indian Premier League (Ipl). The “Impact” player option has been introduced in this years’ edition of the Ipl and one can already see its usefulness.
Most of the coaches in the Ipl have come forth positively about it, as it does make a side’s decision making of a playing eleven that much easier.

Mumbai, April 2 (Ians) The Board of Control for Cricket in India (Bcci) mourned the demise of former India all-rounder Salim Durani, who passed away on Sunday at his residence in Jamnagar after a prolonged battle with cancer. He was 88.
The all-rounder played 29 Tests for India scoring 1202 runs and took 75 wickets. He played a key role with the ball in the famous 1971 Port of Spain Test, where legendary Sunil Gavaskar made his debut. In a span of few balls in the second innings, Durani dismissed both Clive Lloyd and Gary Sobers, paving the way for India’s first Test victory in the Caribbean. He conceded just 21 runs from the 17 overs that he bowled.
“It is with great sadness and a deep sense of loss that Bcci has learnt of the sad demise of Shri Salim Durani on Sunday, 2nd April 2023. A charismatic all-rounder, Durani played the game for two-and-a-half decades,” the...

Perth, Nov 30 (Ians) The West Indies men’s team are wearing black armbands on day one of their first Test against Australia at Optus Stadium in Perth as a tribute to former wicket keeper David Murray, who passed away last week.
Murray, who passed away last week at the age of 72, was the son of West Indies batting great Sir Everton Weekes. He played 19 Tests and 10 ODIs for the West Indies from 1978-82.
Murray’s first tour with the West Indies was in 1973 to England. He made his international debut for the West Indies men’s team at The Oval on September 7, which featured Lance Gibbs, Roy Fredericks, Rohan Kanhai and Clive Lloyd.
His Test debut came in 1978 against Australia in Guyana. He also featured in 114 first-class matches. But in his international career, he mostly remained an understudy to his namesake Deryck Murray and then was usurped by Jeff Dujon in the start of 1980s.

Chennai, June 25 (Ians) Legendary India cricketer Kris Srikkanth has revealed he entertained self-doubts before facing one of West Indies’ most feared bowlers Joel Garner in the 1983 World Cup final at Lord’s. Ahmedabad, March 3 (Ians) Surinder Amaranth, the oldest of the three Amaranth brothers and son of former India captain Lala Amarnath, feels cricket has changed considerably from his playing days.
The 72-year-old former dashing left-hander, who represented India in 10 Tests, is settled in Ahmedabad with his family, away from what he calls the "hustle-bustle" of Delhi, a team that he represented for the majority of his 22-year first-class career.
Amarnath, who scored a century on Test debut in Auckland in 1976, spoke to Ians on a variety of issues related to modern-day cricket.
Excerpts:
Q: You batted No.3 for India. You were quite aggressive. Do you think that aggression is key for a No.3 batsman?
A: Back in our days, most of the No.3 batsmen were attacking, especially in top teams like West Indies, Australia. Even No.4 would be attacking. In my opinion, a No.3 batsman can destroy a...

Fire in Babylon
Written and directed by Stevan Riley
UK, 2010
Fire in Babylon is a 2010 British documentary covering the rise of the West Indies cricket team of the 1970s and 1980s, written and directed by Steven Riley. The film includes historic footage and interviews with the characters of the time, including Colin Croft, Joel Garner, Gordon Greenidge, Michael Holding, Clive Lloyd, and Viv Richards.
The documentary follows the ascension of West Indies cricket from the “Calypso Cricketers” team, due to their exciting but unsuccessful style of play, to a team that never strays far from the top of the cricket betting odds.
After briefly describing the history of cricket in the West Indies, the documentary picks up pace when it reaches the 1970s, with the West Indies still failing to turn a group of 11 players from different parts of the Caribbean into a united team. The appointment of Clive Lloyd...

You can wait for years for a cricketing film, then suddenly two documentaries come along. First there was James Erskine's From the Ashes, about Ian Botham's brief captaincy of England and his subsequent role in winning the Ashes in the early 1980s. Now there's this riveting film about the doldrums in which the West Indies found themselves in the 1970s, and how under the captaincy of Clive Lloyd then Viv Richards they abandoned the cheerful losing mode known as "calypso cricket" and became formidably aggressive winners. It's a rousing film about ex-colonials uniting to assert their pride and to recover a dignity that continued to be denied them by the English and Australians. Nothing gave them a greater desire to fight back than hearing Tony Greig, the deeply unpleasant South African-born English captain, say that he intended to make the Caribbean cricketers grovel. It's great to see Greig get his comeuppance.

Documentary about the heyday of the West Indies cricket side of the 1970s and 80s. It has detailed insights, but more interviews than match footage
The second cricket documentary in a couple of weeks examines a subject slightly less familar to UK audiences, perhaps, than the Botham-powered From the Ashes. Here we are enlightened as to the backstory behind the "blackwash" – how the West Indies assembled their fearsome pace attack under the leadership of Clive Lloyd in the mid-70s, and went on to obliterate all comers for some 15 years, including that famous 5-0 thrashing of England in 1984. The battering they got in Australia in 1976 is revealed as the turning point; though hampered a little by a paucity of match footage, forthright interviews with the key performers – Viv Richards, Colin Croft, Andy Roberts, Lloyd himself – provide detailed insight, harnessing the rising tide of the 70s black power movement to engineer...

My Ayrton-Senna-as-panto-villain stance had never been properly challenged until I saw a preview of Asif Kapadia's upcoming documentary
I have only the vaguest idea where I was when Princess Diana died, and hopefully you'll have guessed from the photo that I wasn't around for JFK. But I remember exactly where I heard about Ayrton Senna's death. I was in my dad's Volvo 245 Estate on the A1081 from St Albans to Harpenden, coming home from choir rehearsal. We'd seen him crash, live on television, earlier in the afternoon. They hadn't shown a replay. Now, two hours later, a radio bulletin was explaining that his brain injuries had been too severe for him to survive.
I remember feeling surprised and even a little guilty as the tears formed in my 15-year-old eyes, and Dad drove on in respectful silence. Senna, it's fair to say, had not been a much-loved figure in our household,...
