In the quiet little English hamlet of Littlehampton, someone has been sending out anonymous letters to their fellow townsfolk. Not just any types of greetings or wish-you-were-here correspondence circa the early 1920s, mind you. These unsigned missives say things like, “You foxy-ass old whore,” or “You dirty old bitch, you belong in hell, probably,” and “You suck 10 cocks a week, minimum.” These are some of the tamer ones, mind you. This epidemic of epistolary obscenities first began to show up at the door of one Edith Swan (Olivia Colman), a...

It's been close to two years since Alex Garland's creepy A24 horror flick "Men" came out, and we've pretty much never stopped thinking about its deeply effed-up ending. Apparently we're not the only ones: in the most recent issue of Total Film magazine, star Jessie Buckley reminisced about shooting the film's bizarre climax scene -- in which the titular men appear via a grotesque and utterly unexpected self-birth sequence.
Calling the final version of Rory Kinnear's character a "head-f**k of a beast," Total Film asked Buckley about the experience of sharing space with the monstrous entity. The actress was quick to demystify the man behind the men, explaining that Kinnear was a great co-star who endured a lot of nasty prep to get into his characters' final form. "Rory Kinnear -- I mean, I love that man with all my heart," Buckley explained. "It was basically just...

"It's time you owned up to these letters!" Sony Pictures Classics has revealed a new official US trailer for a British comedy called Wicked Little Letters, described as a "scandalously sweary" film from filmmaker Thea Sharrock (Me Before You and The One & Only Ivan). This premiered at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival last year, and now has US release dates set - in NY & LA on March 29th and nationwide on April 5th this spring. Small town. Big mystery. Bad language. When people in Littlehampton - including conservative local Edith - begin to receive letters full of hilariously harsh profanities, rowdy Irish migrant Rose is charged with the crime. Suspecting something is amiss, the town's women investigate. Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley star as Edith and Rose, respectively, with Timothy Spall, Gemma Jones, Lolly Adefope, and Anjana Vasan. This does look hilarious! Reviews from TIFF praise the film saying: "The central...

It's official: Franken-fever has gripped the entertainment industry! Up first is one of /Film's most anticipated movies of 2024: "Lisa Frankenstein," director Zelda Williams and writer Diablo Cody's teen horror rom-com starring Kathryn Newton and Jughead Jones himself, "Riverdale" alum Cole Sprouse, as a reanimated corpse. Elsewhere, Guillermo del Toro is on the verge of finally realizing his long-unfulfilled dream of adapting Mary Shelley's gothic literary sci-fi horror masterpiece itself, "Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus," having recently recruited the star of another popular chaotic young adult series, "Euphoria" actor Jacob Elordi, to portray his own Monster.

At the British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs) on Dec. 3, Andrew Haigh‘s “All of Us Strangers” domainted, winning seven races including Picture, Director, and Screenplay. Meanwhile, Mia McKenna-Bruce won Best Lead Performance for “How to Have Sex” while her co-star, Shaun Thomas, tied for Best Supporting Performance along with “All of Us Strangers” scene stealer Paul Mescal. But what do these little independent awards mean for the larger awards season? Let’s take a look.
Firstly, “All of Us Strangers” had a great night. The fantasy film also won Music Supervision, Cinematographer, and Editing. This overwhelming response from British voters could indicate that the same will happen at the BAFTAs. “All of Us Strangers” could be in line for nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor for Mescal, and Best Actor for Andrew Scott. “Fingernails,” for all its modern polish, has a dusty “Twilight Zone” premise. Picture, if you will, a machine no bigger than your average microwave. The wall-mounted rectangular box has the power to prove love between two partners yearning for certainty. Insert two Petrie dishes, each with a just-plucked nail as its sample, press a button, and, perhaps after a little smoke, the machine’s screen will reveal whether these two lovebirds are a 100 percent match, 50 percent, or nil.
We will put a pin in the question of whether romantic love can be quantified or if it’s a powerful emotion that can ebb and flow, and focus on the central character, a redhead with a wretched haircut, Anna (Jessie Buckley). The curious elementary school teacher is at a crossroads: she’s interviewing for a new job and considering alternatives besides academics.

As opening gambits for a trailer go, “Dear Edith, you foxy-ass old whore, you really are a tricksy fucker” is certainly one of the more colourful introductions to a film. And there’s plenty more where that came from in Thea Sharrock’s Wicked Little Letters, which sees :a[The Lost Daughter]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/the-lost-daughter/' target='_blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'} co-stars Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley reunited and going toe-to-toe as two women at the centre of a profanity-filled, missive-based comedy-mystery. It’s the stock answer that many a happy long-term couple has given prying friends and relatives to explain why they haven’t married: “We don’t need a piece of paper to prove our love.” True enough. What can official documents tell you of something as wily and elusive as human desire? Is a band of gold a safeguard against a change of heart? Of course not, yet millions want it anyway, a ratification of feelings that might otherwise seem slippery or intangible from the outside. In “Fingernails,” a quietly searching and yearning science-fiction romance from Greek director Christos Nikou, the piece of paper in question isn’t a marriage certificate but a printed test result: a mathematical, machine-determined declaration that you and your partner are fully in love.
Sounds ludicrous, sure. But with a sly wit that doesn’t preclude its honest emotional intelligence, “Fingernails” invites us to...
