While writer-director Neill Blomkamp’s expertise with genre material — from his international breakthrough, sci-fi revelation District 9 (2009), to dystopian dramas Elysium (2013) and Chappie (2015) — makes him a good fit for an action-oriented sports biopic, it’s perhaps his background as a visual effects artist that proves his greatest asset in bringing Gran Turismo to the screen.
Marshaling a well-integrated combination of innovative digital camera techniques, compelling production design choices and an impressive visual style, Blomkamp’s visceral directing emphatically reinforces the film’s dynamic pacing.
Since it’s “based on a true story” (as the title insistently emphasizes), there’s limited potential for dramatic license with the available material. And while subject Jann Mardenborough has an inspiring backstory, the filmmakers don’t manage to wring much tension from a series of fairly predictable plot developments. But video game enthusiasts, including a sizable audience of Gran Turismo devotees and motorsports fans motivated...

Gran Turismo, Neill Blomkamp’s upcoming feature adaptation of the best-selling PlayStation video game, captures “all the exhilarating aspects of auto racing and the game,” enthused Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, as he introduced well-received footage from the upcoming film.
From Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions, the Aug. 11 release is based on the story of Jann Mardenborough, a teenage Gran Turismo player whose gaming skills won a series of Nissan competitions to become an actual professional race car driver.
Cast members David Harbour and Orlando Bloom were on hand to help present the high-octane footage.
Reading a clunky line from his script, Harbour got a big laugh as he responded, “The Writer’s Strike. I love Chat Gpt.”
Bloom noted that he plays Danny, the market lead at Nissan who convinces PlayStation to run the Gran Turismo challenge at the heart of the movie, revealing “how being good at...

‘Gran Turismo’ Dp Details How He Filmed “Aggressive” Racing Scenes: “We Wanted To Make It Look Real”
Cinematographer Jacques Jouffret aimed to give audiences the thrill of auto racing in Gran Turismo, Neill Blomkamp’s upcoming feature adaptation of the best-selling racing video game. “They’re going to see a race car like they’ve never seen it before,” he asserted during a presentation hosted by Sony at the 2023 Nab Show in Las Vegas.
From Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions, the Aug. 11 release is based on the story of Jann Mardenborough, a teenage Gran Turismo player whose gaming skills won a series of Nissan competitions to become an actual professional race car driver. “This is the true story of this young man. Some very tragic and happy experiences happened to him. Neil really wanted to recreate those moments,” says Jouffret.
The Dp describes the look as a sort of stylized documentary. “We wanted to make it look real, you don’t want it to feel like it’s a computer game,...

Joined by director Neil Blomkamp, Sony unspooled high-octane footage of race car driving in a sneak peek at Gran Turismo, Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions’ feature adaptation of the best-selling racing video game, on Wednesday during its CES press conference in Las Vegas.
Slated for an Aug. 11 theatrical release, Gran Turismo was lensed with Sony’s Venice 2 cameras using its Rialto extension system that effectively detaches the sensor from the camera. This allowed the filmmakers to put cameras in the very tight spaces inside the cars, just as the filmmakers on Top Gun: Maverick used this camera system to put these small camera devices inside fighter jets.
Based on the true story of Jann Mardenborough, the Columbia Pictures film is described by the studio as the ultimate wish fulfillment tale of a teenage Gran Turismo player whose gaming skills won a series of Nissan competitions to become an actual professional race car driver.

Superhero drama Naomi has lost its fight with fate. The CW offering has been cancelled after one season, TVLine has learned.
Despite a promising launch — the show’s January debut ranked as The CW’s third-most watched season premiere of the 2021-22 season — its audience has since fallen by more than 40 percent. That said, its audience still tied for No. 5 among all CW dramas. The May 10 season finale will now serve as a series finale as well.

Nathan and Anthony will never be best friends on The CW’s Naomi because the title character romantically chose one over the other.

Ava DuVernay had a vision to bring a new kind of superhero story to life in The CW's "Naomi": an autonomous story where the titular character (played by Kaci Walfall) could live in her own "Naomi-verse" and redefine what representation looks like on TV. The new DC drama follows "cool, confident, comic book–loving teenager" Naomi in pursuit of "her hidden destiny" as she unearths a supernatural mystery in her hometown and discovers her own special powers.
"It's representation, it's not tokenism, it's normalization."
Compared to other superhero shows that have used race as a plot device, "Naomi" offers a refreshing approach to representation that doesn't throw the obvious in viewers' faces. Though the series centers Walfall's character, the focus is not placed on her skin color, but rather her perspective as a high schooler through a comic-driven coming-of-age story. "Miss Ava always says, this...

When she misses a Superman sighting—or what everyone assumes is a “stunt”—in her small town of Port Oswego, she jumps at the opportunity to investigate the appearance. The more she looks into the stunt, the closer she gets to learning the truth about herself.

Most of the superheroes on the DC-on-The-cw dramas have a long history with each other. Their comic book counterparts have been around for decades, and even in these adaptations, the characters have crossed over into each other’s worlds to team up and take down villains more than once.
But when “Naomi” joins the lineup on Jan. 11, the show — and the titular character, played by Kaci Walfall — is on her own.
She may be a big fan of Superman within the series — so much so that she runs one of the largest fan sites in the world about the DC hero — but she lives in a very different universe than the one in which The CW’s Superman (of “Superman & Lois”) resides.
“I want this to be an autonomous story about Naomi,” executive producer Ava DuVernay tells Variety. “One of the things I really wanted was for her to live in her own universe.

Even though high schooler Naomi (Kaci Walfall) tells us in her opening voiceover that “everyone has a superhero origin story,” hers immediately looks different enough from most on TV to stand apart. For one, she follows in the footsteps of Javicia Leslie as The CW’s second Black woman to lead a DC superhero show, albeit one as different from “Batwoman” in tone and storyline as can be. From executive producers Ava DuVernay and Jill Blankenship — and with canny, fluid pilot direction by Amanda Marsalis — the CW series feels something like if “Superman” blended up weekly comics with the sensibilities of a “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” or “Secret Files of Alex Mack.” For another, Walfall’s Naomi isn’t some moody outcast waiting in the wings for something amazing to happen to her, as is the case for so many other potential heroes. In fact, as the first episode conveys...

Ava DuVernay is expanding beyond the comic book world of Naomi via her upcoming CW series of the same name, premiering Jan. 11. And that could leave the door open for potential crossovers with other popular superhero series on the same network.
“We got a lot of information in the first two episodes which means: we get to make up cool new things,” DuVernay said during the show’s TCA presentation on Thursday. “In terms of crossovers, we’re not thinking about that right now. She’s on her own path and I really think this is the first part of the Naomi-verse. People need to be trying to crossover into here! So we’ll see what happens, but you won’t see any crossovers in Season 1. We’re focused on Naomi’s journey singularly.”

The CW has unveiled its first look at Kaci Walfall as the titular hero of its upcoming series Naomi.
During Saturday’s DC FanDome presentation, the network shared a teaser that sees Walfall’s Naomi on the case of what seems to be a mysterious stunt involving superman.
“I need this for my site,” Naomi interrupts her class before rushing out into the hallways.
After grabbing her bags to get to the center of action Asap, Naomi skateboards through the hallways of her school and reaches her destination. However, potentially overwhelmed by what she sees, Naomi loses consciousness. But right before it’s lights out for her, she sees a familiar silouhette shoot through the sky.

The series receiving orders to series are All American: Homecoming and Naomi.
Both shows have been thought to be locks throughout the entire development season.
All American has remained a strong performer for the network in its third season.
All American: Homecoming will focus on Geffri Maya's recurring character, Simone Hicks, as well as a new athlete.
Simone is a tennis hopeful, while the new person is an elite baseball player from Chicago.
Together, they will deal with the high stakes of college sports while also navigating the highs, lows, and sexiness of unsupervised early adulthood at college.
All American showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll will executive-produce and write the spinoff, while Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Robbie Rogers, who work on the parent series, will be back to work on the offshoot.

The CW is starting to make decisions about new series for the 2021-22 broadcast season.
The network has picked up All American: Homecoming and Naomi to series.
It comes as the youth-skewing broadcaster had tough decisions to make over which projects to pick up. Powerpuff, a live-action reboot of the hit cartoon, is being reworked and re-piloted off-cycle, while the Nancy Drew spinoff Tom Swift remains in consideration.
Black Lightning spinoff Painkiller and Jennie Snyder Urman’s millennial nun dramedy Our Ladies of Brooklyn are not moving forward.
The All American spinoff and Ava DuVernay’s superhero project join a reboot of classic sci-fi drama 4400 straight-to-series. The CW is set to unveil its full fall schedule and midseason 2022 programming on Tuesday.
