Paramount+ has announced that the two-part docuseries How Music Got Free will premiere exclusively on the service in the U.S. and Canada on Tuesday, June 11, and Wednesday, June 12, in the U.K., Australia, Latin America, France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Italy.
Alexandria Stapleton directed the series, which premiered at the 2024 SXSW Film & TV Festival.
The docuseries was executive produced by Marshall “Eminem” Mathers, LeBron James, Maverick Carter, Paul Rosenberg, and Steve Stoute and produced by Warner Bros. Unscripted Television/Telepictures in association with SpringHill, Interscope Films, and Shady Films.
How Music Got Free details the fascinating and often funny inside story of the technology-driven disruption that changed music during the late 1990s and early 2000s. File-sharing technology, combined with the insatiable demand for new music, created both the means and the motive for millions of young people to participate in outright theft—and be celebrated for it.

The story everyone knows about the rise of the Mp3 and the end of the CD gold rush is a good one. It’s got Metallica and Dr. Dre, Sean Parker and the RIAA, Napster, Kazaa, Limewire, and the record industry’s flabbergasting decision to sue its own fans. But the real story, or arguably the most nuanced and fascinating one, lies elsewhere with a bunch of young computer wizzes scattered across the country and a handful of crafty, underpaid factory workers in Shelby, North Carolina.

Showtime Documentary Films today announced a new limited docuseries profiling controversial rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine. Titled “SuperVillain” and inspired by the Rolling Stone feature written by Stephen Witt, the three-part series will trace how a New York City deli clerk named Daniel Hernandez became superstar rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine — who racked up 2.6 billion streams and multiple hit singles but whose gang ties, which he claimed were just for image purposes, caught up with him. He’s currently in prison on federal racketeering and weapons charges, but has cooperated with authorities and could be released as early as the end of this year.
Brian Grazer of Imagine Entertainment will executive produce. The series will be produced by Imagine Documentaries, Rolling Stone and Lightbox. An airdate will be announced in the coming weeks.
“The bizarre and complicated rise of Tekashi 6six9ine is a story of our times,” said Vinnie Malhotra, Executive Vice President,...
