Murdoch Mysteries may be 17 seasons in, but it can still find ways to do something new. And in this case, that means a musical episode! TV Insider has an exclusive sneak peek at the event. The episode, “Why Is Everyone Singing?” may not be airing until April 6 on Ovation in the U.S., but it will be debuting on March 25 on CBC in Canada. It was written by Paul Aitken and directed by Laurie Lynd. In the episode, while pursuing a missing man now presumed dead, Murdoch (Yannick Bisson) takes a call that alters his perception of the world. After heading into a lively alley, he’s shot in the head and left for dead. Crabtree (Jonny Harris) and Higgins (Lachlan Murdoch) find him with the faintest pulse clinging to life. The problems with Close to You aren’t immediately apparent. It’s a quiet film about Sam (Elliot Page), a trans man, living in Toronto. He’s trying to decide whether or not to return home for his father’s birthday party. Sam comes from a family whose uneasiness with his transition sometimes manifests as an aggressive insistence on their progressive values. He considers whether he can endure their performance.
Written and directed by Dominic Savage, Close to You focuses on the drama of Sam’s homecoming. Returning to his small town near Lake Ontario forces him to confront long-buried feelings about his family and an old friend (Hillary Baack). The film yearns to capture the stages of this emotional exhumation, but a clunky screenplay makes for a less affecting watch.
The film’s visual grammar is built on intimate close-ups that try to capture the imperceptible awkwardness of the past and present colliding.

The Canadian Screen Awards has unveiled nominations for the national film and TV prize-giving, and the CBC civil rights drama The Porter leads the film and TV field with 19 mentions in all, including for best small-screen drama.
The first Canadian drama series from an all-Black creative team, which also streams on BET+, centers on the lives of Black train porters and their families as they launch North America’s first Black labor union in the 1920s.
The TV categories, voted on by around 3,000 Canadian industry insiders, also sees the CBC series Detention Adventure and Sort Of – a Peabody award-winning show about a gender fluid young Muslim in Toronto played by Bilal Baig — nab 15 nominations each in an awards show shaping up to be a major showcase for people of color.
That follows Canadian film, and TV industry efforts to ensure diversity and inclusivity in the country’s indie production sector and prize-giving process.

"Your family needs you." "My family needs me? What about when I needed you…" An early teaser trailer is out for a film titled Goliath, a Canadian feature that has been in the works for years already. It's finally set to release on VOD starting in February this year, after first premiering in 2019. When Robin Walker returns home for her father's funeral, she's forced to confront the bitter family she left behind, as well as personal demons; resulting in the reveal of an unsettling secret. "Goliath was the ultimate film school," states the first-time director Luke Villemaire. "We took the trial by fire approach that many first-time filmmakers are forced to endure when struggling to break into the industry. It was incredibly tolling, but I was determined to see this project through, and it has ultimately been a rewarding experience." This was originally shot back in 2016 in Quinte West, Ontoario and nearby areas.

I was probably one of about seven people that wasn’t enamoured with Wolf Cop. There’s a lot of love for it, but I just didn’t have the same blast with it that everyone else seemed to. That’s not to say it’s a bad film, I was mid festival, severely sleep deprived and in need of a good rest. So, when offered Lowell Dean’s latest piece, SuperGrid, I was eager to see if this was a one off. Seems that yes, it was.

There’s almost an unspoken mandate contained within the premise of “Impulse.” Center a TV show around a young woman who is grappling with her newfound ability to teleport and there’s a certain promise to follow wherever that power will lead her.
What made Season 1 of the YouTube Premium series an effective introduction to the story is that it didn’t burden Henry Coles (Maddie Hasson) with having to shoulder infinite possibilities that came with jumping from place to place. The arrival of her ability coincided with an assault perpetrated by one of her classmates, and dealing with that traumatic aftermath, Henry’s jumps — however unpredictable — usually brought her back to her bedroom, a place of comfort.
The start of the “Impulse” sophomore season finds Henry confronted with an even bigger world far outside the confines of her small town of Reston, New York. A hovering fellow jumper named...

This spoiler-free review is based on the first two episodes of Impulse season 2.
Viewers of Impulse on YouTube Premium have figured out by now that the television adaptation of the Stephen Gould Jumper novels is more true to the themes of personal trauma from the first book than it is to the high octane action film from 2008. As a result, the pacing of the first season is quite deliberate, focusing more on what caused Henry Coles, played by Maddie Hasson, to teleport in the first place rather than accelerating through her origin story and having her quickly gain control over her abilities. Although some of that will change in season 2, the first two episodes made available for review indicate that the details about...

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for “Impulse” Season 1, including the ending.]
There’s a moment in the “Impulse” finale that helps bring the show’s entire first season into focus. Not knowing about the strange ability that her daughter has only begun to start to control, Cleo (Missi Pyle) comforts Henry (Maddie Hasson), telling her not to diminish her own experiences or put them in some self-imposed context.
In a way, by the ending of Season 1, that’s the same message that “Impulse” itself has sent to its main character: to not lose sight of what she finds important, just for the conventions of TV. While the collective entanglements of the characters for the show’s other generation was more of a mixed bag, the new YouTube Premium series managed to let its high-school-aged protagonist take her time before crossing paths with an outsider well outside her current hometown.
In our season review, we referenced the ever-present risk for personal sci-fi stories like this,...

One easy way to kick off a TV show is to have a fight between two people hopping back forth between a subway train car and the edge of a glacier. It’s no small feat, then, that after starting that way, “Impulse” then foregoes just enough of the international metaphysical intrigue to tell a compelling high school drama story.
A majority of the new YouTube Premium show centers on Henry (Maddie Hasson), a high schooler who at the outset is mainly concerned with looking to escape a troubled family situation through a haze of pot smoke. Her life changes one day when a classroom seizure brings on some unexpected abilities. Over the course of subsequent weeks, Henry discovers that she has teleportation powers that she has little ability to control.
Still trying to understand these new experiences, Henry finds herself in another unthinkable situation after getting a ride home...
