There are two storylines at the center of Stanley Kwan's labyrinthine “Center Stage” (1991). The main one follows the life of Ruan Lingyu, a real-life actress who was perhaps China's most celebrated film performer in the early 1930s. Ruan arguably became even more of a legend when she committed suicide at age 24, as her private life became the scandalmongering subject of tabloid gossip. The second storyline is set in 1991 and follows a film crew (shot in black and white) making a biopic about Ruan. They discuss her life, interview some of the surviving film crews who knew her (it sometimes feels like a documentary of Kwan documenting his own filmmaking), and eventually recreate Ruan's life on their own soundstage.

A musical stage adaptation of Crazy Rich Asians is under development, with Jon M. Chu set to direct.
The musical, which is being developed by Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures and Kevin Kwan, features a book by Leah Nanako Winkler, music by Helen Park and lyrics by Amanda Green and Tat Tong. The production is aiming for Broadway, with a pre-Broadway engagement to be announced shortly.
This would mark the Great White Way debut for Chu, who directed the film version of Crazy Rich Asians and In the Heights, as well as the upcoming two-part film adaptation of Wicked.
Both the film and the original book trilogy by Kwan provide the basis for the stage adaptation. The plot follows an American named Rachel Chu who travels to Singapore with her boyfriend, Nick Young, for a wedding and finds out that he comes from a very wealthy family, which does not necessarily approve of her.

Grey's Anatomy Round Table: Did Arizona's Big Return Underwhelm?Did They Drop the Ball with Calzona?
Arizona Robbins made her grand return.
But did her reappearance on Grey's Anatomy Season 20 Episode 4 live up to the hype? Elsewhere, Lucas moves in with Amelia, and Jules deals with her brother in a pretty uneventful episode.
Join Haley Whitmire White, Sara Trimble, and Lucy Peel as they discuss the hour.
What are your thoughts on Arizona's big return? Do you feel like there were some missed opportunities?
Haley: I love Arizona, and I've missed her. It was great to see her back, especially in the capacity of a world-renowned fetal surgeon.
It's amazing to see how far her career has come. But yes, I definitely think there were some missed opportunities. Why didn't anyone ask about how Callie and Sofia were doing?
It seems weird that none of that would get brought up. Are Callie and Arizona together? Come on, now. I need answers.

There’s no denying that the Halo season 2 finale delivered the goods, not only finally getting Master Chief and Cortana to the ring itself but also setting up storylines from the original game that will hopefully pay off in big ways in a third season. But despite a cliffhanger finale that introduced both 343 Guilty Spark and the Flood parasite, and that ended with John-117 preparing to trek deeper into the depths of the ring, we still haven’t heard anything about Halo season 3.
Not that the Halo team isn’t already thinking about what could come next. In fact, judging from comments made earlier this year, they’re more than ready to finish the fight.
“You always have to assume the best, right? And you wanna be writing with that long-term view in mind. So, definitely there’s story beyond season 2. We would love to be able to explore,...

Things are messy with a capital "M" at Grey Sloan Memorial.
Turmoil abounds as relationships have splintered, secrecy looms, and trouble is right around the corner on Grey's Anatomy Season 20 Episode 3.
Let the record show that presently, a girl wants to wrap Yasuda and Levi up in a blanket and hold them because they had a tough installment.
So did Teddy, but she mainly seemed okay with it all, even though she faceplanted on a treadmill like Maya Bishop.
Seriously, what is up with the Grey's Universe and treadmills? In conclusion, exercising is the worst.
Meredith was back for this installment, but if it was one time when her presence seemed a bit off and unnecessary, it was this one.
It felt like the scenes she appeared in could've gotten put into a much bigger episode that pushed the Alzheimers plot and her penchant for going rogue to the forefront.

With so few episodes in the season, should we have more plot movement?
It's one of many questions that crossed our round table's mind after Grey's Anatomy Season 20 Episode 2.
It was an episode in which very little happened to move the plot along, but Lucas and Simone called it quits, and a lonely Amelia bounced around.
Join TV Fanatics Haley Whitmire White, Lucy Peel, and Jasmine Blu as they break down the hour.

How do you feel about this episode and the minimal plot development? Do you enjoy episodes that focus on cases and character-building?
Haley: It's funny — while I was watching it, I was taking mental notes in preparation for our round table, and I was thinking, "Wow, this episode is Boring."
Normally, I'm fine with episodes that bring us into the Grey's universe without any dramatic events, but come on, it's a short season!

Arrowhead Games’ Helldivers 2 is going strong, and the player base is holding the line when it comes to battling bugs for the supremacy of Super Earth. Players join forces with friends and randoms to acquire outposts and set up infrastructure to help propagate the reach of our home planet.
However, there appears to be a considerable lack of motivation when it comes to certain battlefronts. The Terminids may be being dealt a decisive blow, but it appears troops are not showing the same degree of grit when it comes to the Automatons. This is something Arrowhead will have to look into if they wish for the game to remain popular in the coming months.

It was an understated hour of Grey's Anatomy.
A lot of fun little tidbits happened during Grey's Anatomy Season 20 Episode 2, but not enough to move the plot forward outside of the Simone and Lucas development.
But overall, the hour was purely just vibing as we coast into bigger storylines.
More than anything, we got to spend some quality time with the interns and revel in their fun antics that continue to capture the nostalgic feel of Grey's from yesteryear.
The interns are genuinely a fun bunch to watch, and this hour allowed us to do so unimpeded for the most part.
We got to see Bailey in her true form as the mentor and leader of the interns.
But as the hour progressed, it was evident that sometimes, she had to adapt to a different herd of young doctors and the times.
My class didn't screw up like yours did!

It’s not long after Halsey, Miranda, and Kwan discover the ancient Forerunner device that Oni scientists and Unsc officers start chomping down on each other. They’ve been infected with the strange spore contained inside the device and now everyone, including Admiral Parangosky and Laera, are lunch. What the hell is happening in the Hahlo season 2 finale?
It’s time to meet the Flood in the alternate Silver Timeline. In a big twist, they’ve arrived much earlier than in the game the show is based on, already spreading beyond the Halo ring long before Master Chief and Cortana even have a chance to stop the alien parasite from consuming everything in its path. It’s perhaps the show’s biggest deviation from the source material and will likely mean the Flood storyline plays out much differently on TV than it did in the Halo trilogy.

Like we have stated previously as well, the Halo TV series has exercised a number of creative liberties when it comes to the core storyline, making changes that sometimes feel unnecessary, and the total omission of the Flood storyline in the first season was one of them. Given how much of a role this hideous intergalactic parasite plays in the lore of Halo, the adverse reaction of the fans was justified, and the makers learned their lesson in due time.
In the very first episode of the second season, a major Flood teaser was given through the insurrectionist survivor of Madrigal, Kwan Ha’s, conversation with Soren’s son Kessler, who mentions the possible arrival of a primordial evil that threatens to become the end of everything. In the cave paintings of Soren’s quarter in Rubble, Kwan finds ominous signs of the presence of Flood. But even Kwan didn...

As far as conventional cosmic sci-fi gaming franchises go, the world of Halo remains unique as it provides a rich, archetypal backdrop by admixing theological intrigue with large-scale human-alien conflict. The core storyline of the game series, which acts as the source for Paramount+’s TV series of the same name, spans through millenia as layers of intricate world-building have expanded the scope of the overarching story itself. Although the TV series has barely scratched the surface of the expansive lore through two seasons, depicting the ongoing conflict between humans and the religious fanatic alien congregation, the Covenant’s forces during the middle phase of the 24th century—the second season has provided ample hints to the seemingly forgotten past, which is instrumental in appreciating the series’ true potential. In fact, now that the second season of the TV series has ended with teasing the existence of Forerunners, the third...

With much of the second season spent in the snail-paced development of unremarkable subplots, the finale of the second season of Halo was bound to get a bit haphazard and crammed. However, this obvious shortcoming was somewhat nullified by a good dose of drama, action, and plot twists, which probably stemmed from the sudden realization the series makers had to match up with the original storyline.
Previously, as Makee and Master Chief were psychically transported to the Ringworld, the location of the Halo was recorded and revealed by Cortana, which led Arbiter to head towards the Halo, followed by a huge fleet of Covenant forces. Oni acting chief Admiral Parangosky decides to shift blame onto Colonel Ackerson for the mishap on Reach, and upon learning that the Covenant forces are heading towards the Halo, he prepares to sacrifice the entire new generation Spartan III battalion to stop the Covenant from...

The hotel employee checking me in was visibly excited. Leaning in to tell me something confidential, I half expected to hear Ryan Gosling was staying there.
“There’s an AI robot staying at the hotel,” she said. “It was just down here at the bar.”
“Does it have its own room?”
“I’m not sure if its–,” the woman paused. “Do you say owner? Handler? Friend?”
I hadn’t a clue, and still don’t. While breakthroughs in pre-trained large-language models are driving this artificial intelligence moment, one thing on display in Austin this week was the lack of words we possess to properly discuss it.
But discuss it we did at the SXSW Conferences, where AI was the topic dominating hundreds of panels, workshops, talks, and meet-up-sessions spread over 24 different tracks. The central conflict between humans and the Covenant forces reaches a significant juncture as Paramount+’s cosmic warfare epic Halo nears the end of its second season. Previously, Master Chief arrived on the planet Onyx along with Halsey, Kwan, Soren, and Laera, and upon reaching the Unsc base, they confronted the only active Silver team member, Spartan Kai, who had been misguided by Ackerson into abandoning Reach. Kai was shocked out of her wits as Chief exposed the heinous machinations of Oni, which were the prime reason for the fall of Reach as well as the death of their teammate, Spartan Vannak. However, to keep the ruse of her obedience to Oni intact, Kai delivered a brutal beatdown to Chief, knocking him unconscious in the process.

In her Season 20 preview for Deadline, new Grey’s Anatomy showrunner Meg Marinis called it “back to basics,” and the season premiere, which she wrote, offered just that. In a return to Grey’s early years, the episode ended with Bailey retaking charge of the surgical interns.
The opener started with the interns facing the music after getting themselves in trouble with questionable medical decisions in the Season 19 finale and Nick posing a question to them, “Which one of you am I firing?”
Banned from any doctor duties, the group find themselves in the middle of the action anyway. Simone and Lucas end up in the back of an ambulance trying to stabilize a patient with Bailey and Meredith’s directions while their parked vehicle is being hit by a wayward self-driving car every couple of minutes. (It is unclear why the ambulance was not moved away from the crashing car.

The Greek provocateur seemed to be smiling throughout Oscar night. In the past he’d delivered films with titles like Dogtooth and The Lobster, and his newest, Poor Things, was now stockpiling the statuary even as Hollywood’s filmmaking elite looked on, perplexed.
Yorgos Lanthimos’ code-busting Poor Things was winning not only successive awards (four in all) Sunday but also the exuberant applause from an audience that seemed to welcome change. Even chaotic change.
Oppenheimer won the big prize on Oscar night, of course, but Oscar voters once again demonstrated their support for the product of the filmmaking underclass. The Scorsese-Spielberg-Ridley Scott fraternity looked on while dark horses like Lanthimos, or, a year earlier, the Daniels (Kwan and Scheinert) from Everything Everywhere All at Once, stole the action. Coda from Sian Heder was the surprise of 2022.

We loved "Everything Everywhere All at Once" around these parts (you can read our review right here), but it seems like some folks have soured on the flick ever since it took home an Oscar for Best Picture. So it goes. The feature helmed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, aka The Daniels, is wild, unpredictable, funny, and emotional. Perhaps the emotional angle is what turns people off these days — it seems like anyone or anything who dares to express any type of half-positive emotion is labeled as "cringe." And that's a shame. None of this is to say you're not allowed to dislike the movie. To each their own.
But if you still have a place for "Everything Everywhere All at Once" in your heart, you might be curious about how the wild and crazy film came together. Or more specifically, where all of the over-the-top insanity originally sprung from.

Feeling freaked out about artificial intelligence? You’ve got good company, in the form of Oscar-winning filmmakers Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert.
During a wide-ranging talk held at SXSW today (via Deadline), the pair (best known to fans and friends as The Daniels) returned to the festival that first debuted their Best Picture winner “Everything Everywhere All at Once” to chat about a variety of subjects, including the potential future of Hollywood and beyond.
Per Deadline, the conversation “culminated” in Kwan telling the crowd how he’s really feeling about AI. In a word, terrified. “It’s magic, it’s going to solve cancer and bring solutions, it’s a powerful thing, but I’m really terrified of this new story,” Deadline reported Kwan as saying. The outlet added that, “Kwan described a situation whereby many are ‘chasing’ AI to stay ahead of it, ‘because you know you’re next.

The Daniels, two years after they world premiered Everything Everywhere All at Once at SXSW, and an year after winning a slew of Oscars for the film including Best Picture, came back to Austin, TX to give a multi-prong talk at the fest which culminated in Daniel Kwan exclaiming that he’s “terrified” of A.I.
“It’s magic, it’s going to solve cancer and bring solutions, it’s a powerful thing, but I’m really terrified of this new story,” said Kwan.
Kwan described a situation whereby many are “chasing” AI to stay ahead of it, “because you know you’re next.”
The Oscar winning filmmaker, appearing with his Everything, Everywhere co-director Daniel Schneinert, said that “we’re not at a place that’s disposable, (there’s) no longevity between employees and employers.”
Kwan said, “We’re not saying don’t use A.I. — I don’t believe in dogmas.

Helldivers 2 is a game that is constantly growing and changing. It’s commendable that its developer, Arrowhead Game Studios, has dedicated themselves to making it one of the most detailed and dynamic live service games of all time. And they seem to be succeeding too; thanks to their incredible attention to detail, fans are already getting incredibly focused on this game’s lore.
With this kind of ever-changing nature, one thing is for sure: Helldivers 2 will keep its players engaged for a long time. But this also means that there would always be some changes that players would ask of the developers. Sometimes those changes would be about this ever-changing world, and other times they would be about its gameplay.

After getting bogged down by bureaucratic conspiracies, clichéd human dramas, and stretched-out subplots that serve no major purpose for the majority of the second season, Paramount+’s cosmic warfare saga Halo finally seems to be veering towards sci-fi intrigue, following the direction of its source material. Previously, a vicious attack by the Covenant fleet resulted in the fall of the planet Reach, and Oni’s betrayal led to the loss of numerous lives, including Spartan Vannak’s. Thanks to Kwan and Laera’s timely arrival, Soren, Riz, Master Chief, and Dr. Halsey managed to escape from the planet and arrive at the mining planet of Aleria. An injured Riz undergoes surgery, and after grinding through her fair share of physical and mental affliction for so long, she decides to quit the Spartan life. A distraught Master Chief pledges to bring Vannak’s killers to justice—the ones who left the...

Almost a year after Everything Everywhere All at Once took over the Oscars, the filmmaking duo behind the indie sensation are getting closer to their next feature.
Universal has set a June 12, 2026 release date for the next film from filmmakers Daniels (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert). No other details were available, though the studio is describing it as an “untitled event film,” suggesting a large scope for the project.
It’s the first feature stemming from a long-term pact Daniels inked with Universal in the summer of 2022, months before they won for best picture, best director and best original screenplay at the Oscars, making them the hottest directing duo in the film business.
Daniels came up in the world of music videos, helming DJ Snake and Lil Jon’s “Turn Down for What.” They made their directorial debut with the Sundance feature Swiss Army Man, starring Paul Dano and Daniel Radcliffe...

Made for only $30 million, Chu's lightweight puffball grossed $239 million worldwide. It follows the adventures of a young economics professor named Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) who has been enjoying her romantic relationship with the dash-handsome Nick Young (Henry Golding). Nick is called back to his home country of Singapore to attend a wedding, and Rachel is reluctantly invited along. Reluctantly, because Nick has been trying to keep his vast wealth hidden from Rachel. It seems his family is practically royalty in Singapore, inviting new conversations about honesty and their inescapable class divide into their relationship. Kwan’s 2001 film was the strongest in a wave of gay-themed Chinese films and remains a poignant work that tugs at audience heartstrings
At the start of Stanley Kwan’s masterly 2001 melodrama, entrepreneur Chen Handong (Hu Jun) thinks back to the 1980s and to the night he met young architecture student Lan Yu (Liu Ye), freshly arrived in Beijing from the country and ripe for mentoring and more. The older man warns his toy boy not to get attached. “When two people know each other too well, it’s time to separate,” he says – then signally fails to heed his own advice. He showers Lan Yu with gifts, even buying him a villa, but external events exert unreasonable pressures on them. Handong feels obliged to marry a woman, while Lan Yu joins the protests in Tiananmen Square. The massacre may be reduced here to noises off but its inclusion helps explain,...

The summer of 2023 marks the 10-year anniversary of Kevin Kwan’s internationally best-selling debut novel Crazy Rich Asians and the five-year anniversary of its record-grossing big-screen adaptation, but the author barely had time to think about the dual milestones. For the past two years he has been engrossed in the writing of his fifth novel, an endeavor that he describes as “all-consuming.” But now that the literary cat is out of the bag — Kwan broke the news that Lies and Weddings, the continuation of his latest trilogy, will hit bookshelves on May 21, 2024 — he’s finding the time and the mental clarity to soak in what 10 years of Crazy Rich Asians has meant. Here, Kwan called THR (the morning after Tropical Storm Hilary hit L.A.) to look back — and forward.
Let’s talk about Lies and Weddings first. What can you tell us about how the idea for this novel came about?...

"Everything Everywhere All at Once" broke nearly every barrier imaginable in the film world with its groundbreaking debut in 2022, followed by its epic award season run this year. From its best picture Oscar win to increased visibility for Asian performers in Hollywood, the blockbuster movie opened up more doors for diverse storytelling on the silver screen. But, sadly, it seems "Everything Everywhere All at Once" will be a one-of-one kind of project, as lead star Michelle Yeoh recently revealed there won't be a follow-up to the A24 feature film.
"There's no sequel," said Yeoh, who played Evelyn Wang, rejecting the idea during an interview with Variety (published on May 21) at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. "We would just be doing the same thing."

The Green Knight director David Lowery is joining the Star Wars: Skeleton Crew team as a featured filmmaker on the series. While production for the series wrapped a few months ago, details about who contributes to the show are starting to make the rounds. A complete list of contributors is forthcoming, but One Take News says Lowery is involved.
Earlier this month, the Everything Everywhere All At Once filmmaking duo, The Daniels, were revealed to have helmed an episode of the upcoming series. Oddly, the news about their contribution to the series was ill-received by fans, with many saying the Oscar-winning duo had sold out.
Daniel Kwan took to his Instagram Story (via Entertainment Weekly) to address the backlash and explained that they’re only directing one episode of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. “Lol, all of the people @ing us about getting sucked up by the ‘corporate machine’ can chill.

Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert — collectively known as the "Daniels" — are the latest indie darlings to make the move to the world of Disney blockbusters. Cinema purists may lament the transition, but the Academy Award-winning directors of "Everything Everywhere All At Once" have assured everyone that the "Star Wars" project they were hired for is relatively small and not a permanent position. In other words, just because Daniels are directing one episode of a "Star Wars" television series doesn't mean they've become corporate shills.
At this point, pulling filmmakers from the indie world and singing them on to big-budget tentpole projects have become a tradition for modern Hollywood, especially for Disney. James Gunn rose from the goopy depths of Troma's campy B-movie exploitation to become one of the most influential figures in superhero blockbusters. The quirky New Zealand weirdo director Taika Waititi has now helmed projects for both Marvel and "Star Wars.

Several days ago it was reported that Everything Everywhere All at Once directors The Daniels (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert) would helm at least one episode of the Star Wars: Skeleton Crew TV series. I thought that was fun news, but clearly some didn’t as they accused the directing duo of selling out.
These headlines are always misleading,” Kwan wrote. “Don’t worry. We aren’t working on a whole series, we guest directed one episode. Jon Watts approached us to do an episode a while ago (before Eeaao even came out). We love Jon, love Star Wars, love learning new tech, we love meeting new cast and crew,...

The Daniels – the Oscar-winning directing duo behind Everything Everywhere All at Once– have clapped back at detractors who accused them of “selling out” after signing on to direct a new Star Wars series.
Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert won Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for their A24 movie starring Michelle Yeoh at this year’s Academy Awards.
A week later, it has been announced that the pair were involved in Disney+’s The Skeleton Crew, which stars Jude Law and follows a group of lost kids making their way across a galaxy far, far away.
On Instagram Tuesday (21 March), Kwan clarified that he and Scheinert only directed one episode of the series.
