Michael Gudinski, founder and chairman of the Mushroom Group, died overnight at home in Melbourne. He was 68.
One of the key figures in the Australian music industry, Gudinski started Mushroom Records in 1972 at just 20 years old.
Over the decades, the label worked with some the biggest names in Australian music, such as Jimmy Barnes, Kylie Minogue, Archie Roach, Hunters & Collectors, Paul Kelly, The Angels and Yothu Yindi.
The Mushroom Group also grew to become an entertainment empire, with brands across touring, record labels, publishing, merchandising, booking agencies, film and television production and creative services.
Mushroom Pictures, its production and distribution arm, was formed in 1993.

Starz has acquired the US and Canadian rights to The Gloaming, with the eight-episode drama to premiere across each of the cable network’s platforms next month.

Netflix has commissioned a reboot of beloved ’90s teen drama Heartbreak High, to be produced by Fremantle Australia and Dutch production company NewBe.
The eight-part series, to shoot in Sydney with the support of Screen Nsw, will be inspired by the original but reimagined for today.
NewBe started shopping a contemporary remake at MIPCOM last year, after acquiring the rights from Brian Abel, partner of the late Ben Gannon, who created and produced the original. Fremantle was understood to be involved in March.

Australian production firm Porchlight Films will cease operations after 23 years of making features that include Justin Kurzel’s “True History of the Kelly Gang,” and Garth Davis’ “Mary Magdalene.” The company also produced David Michod’s 2010 Australian “Animal Kingdom” feature that sparked a successful U.S. TV series.

Jones, who was story producer on Every Cloud’s ABC iview series Deadlock, is working as head of content and development.

When Rena Owen weighs up whether to accept roles, her main goal is to portray characters who are not the same as or similar to those she’s played before.
That maxim has served the Kiwi actress well in a screen career which spans 30 years since her debut in the Nz police series Shark in the Park.
Currently she is in Hobart playing yet another unique individual – Grace, who runs a community drop-in centre for wayward kids – in The Gloaming, an eight-part drama commissioned by Stan and Disney’s ABC Studios International.
Owen was in Vancouver getting ready to shoot the final episode of the second season of mermaid drama Siren, which screens on Disney’s young-adult Us cable network Freeform, when she was asked to audition for The Gloaming.
Her schedule was so hectic her initial response was that she had no time to do a self-test.

The Federal Government today confirmed that Australian shows commissioned by Netflix, Stan and other streaming services and produced in Australia will qualify immediately for the Post, Digital and Visual Effects (Pdv) and Location Offsets.
Communications Minister Mitch Fifield told The Australian the changes would “ensure our industry is able to capitalise on more opportunities and will attract further inbound investment in Australian screen production.”
There was no follow-up announcement today because Scott Morrison this morning called an election on May 18 so the government went into caretaker mode at 8.29 am.

The Australian Directors Guild has clinched a ground-breaking deal with production arms of the Walt Disney Co. for four Aussie directors who will work on crime drama Reef Break, set to shoot in Queensland.
It is the first agreement between the guild and an offshore production company and Adg CEO Kingston Anderson hopes it will serve as a template for all foreign TV shows shooting in Australia.
The deal applies to the four Aussies who will work with a Us set-up director on the 13-episode series, all yet to be revealed.
“We know what the Us rates are for directors and Australian directors were getting a lot less,” Anderson tells If. “We have negotiated a much better deal covering basic pay and conditions, and directors can still negotiate individual agreements. This will help us keep directors in Australia.

Village Roadshow and Foxtel have joined a newly-formed global coalition of 30 content creators and on-demand entertainment companies dedicated to reducing online piracy.
The Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment (Ace) will draw on the worldwide anti-piracy resources of the Motion Picture Association of America, in concert with the efforts of coalition members.

Michael Miller, co-writer of the ABC's Cleverman, has won the $10,000 Australian Writers' Guild's 2016 John Hinde Award for Science Fiction.
The annual award, first presented in 2008, is funded by a bequest from the late film critic John Hinde.
The award has two categories: one for a produced script, won by Miller, and one for an unproduced script, which this year was awarded to Graeme Burfoot for his screenplay, Red to Blue..Both were presented their awards at an industry event held at Brisbane Powerhouse on Wednesday evening..

Foxtel has promoted Penny Win to the new role of head of drama, a reward for her work in commissioning The Kettering Incident, Devil.s Playground and Deadline Gallipoli.
Win was commissioning editor for drama as well as channel manager of Foxtel.s SoHo and showcase. The company has not yet announced who will take charge of those two channels.

The John Hinde Award for Science Fiction presented by the Australian Writers' Guild is broadening its scope this year, including inviting entries from unproduced scripts.
The $10,000 prize will be awarded to the writer of the best produced script and the categories will be expanded to sub-genres and cross genre pieces, including horror-hybrids and post-Apocalyptic works.
Also, this year the writer of the best unproduced script will get to meet with a leading genre producer, with all travel costs covered by the Awg and the Hinde Award.
The purpose of the award bequested by. Australian film critic John Hinde is to encourage, reward and foster creativity in the development and showcasing of science fiction writing for feature film, short film, TV, radio and interactive media.

In the end, it didn.t come down to a choice between New Zealand and Australia as the location for The Light Between Oceans, a Hollywood adaptation of Australian author M.L. Stedman.s debut novel set on an island off the coast of Wa in 1918. The producers have decided to shoot most of the film in the Marlborough and Otago regions of New Zealand plus a week in Tasmania. The Tassie location is Stanley on the north-west coast, an area which writer-director Derek Cianfrance (The Place Beyond the Pines). visited during a recent recce. Produced by David Heyman and Jeffrey Clifford,. the DreamWorks film will star Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander and Rachel Weisz. Shooting starts at the end of September. Stedman.s novel revolves around a lighthouse keeper and his wife who find a 2-month-old girl and a dead body in a rowboat and decide to raise the baby as their own.
