Netflix has unveiled the first trailer for its latest live-action original series from Japan, Burn the House Down, set to launch globally on July 13.
A domestic revenge thriller, the show stars Mei Nagano (My Love Story!, Hanbun, Aoi) as Anzu Murata, a young woman whose childhood was torn apart when her family’s home burned down, prompting her parents to divorce. Convinced that her ailing mother was wrongly accused of the conflagration, Anzu goes undercover to work as a housekeeper for the suspicious woman who married her father in the wake of the blaze — convinced that she can gather evidence and discover the truth of what really happened.
The show is an adaptation of the popular manga Burn the House Down (Mitarai-ke Enjō Suru), which ran in Japan from 2017 to 2021. Kodansha USA Publishing began releasing the manga in English in June 2022.

The spectre of autism can prove to be a slippery slope for filmmakers. Even if it does not necessarily end up on the territory of exploitation, it tends to be the defining characteristic for the characters with it, as we witnessed in films like “Rain Man” and “Forest Gump”. Having that in mind, making a compelling, convincing and believable romance movie with at least one character somewhere on the spectrum seems like a difficult, if not downright impossible task, and the Japanese filmmaker Rika Katsu undertook it for her debut feature “Spring in Between” that we had the chance to see at Nippon Connection.
Spring In Between is screening at Nippon Connection
Katsu opens the film with a parallel montage of a man seemingly playing with blue paint on its hands, but actually painting and a woman running to some kind of an open show, against the backdrop of music...

Shot entirely in Tsukuba, “Astro Age” is another short by Takayuki Ogawa that manages to have an extensive festival run, both in Japan and internationally.

Rookie science journalist Misaki is entrusted to interview an astronaut who has returned to Earth after completing a manned asteroid research mission. While Misaki is excited about this dream chance, her aunt recommends that she practice the interview, and she reluctantly ends up listening to space fans found around her. A veteran astronaut, a kid who started dealing with space due to aliens, and an obese girl with an intense fascination on meteorites are the ones who end up being interviewed, resulting in her rethinking both the concept of space and of fulfilling one’s dreams.
Ogawa directs a minimal but quite pleasant 22-minute short, which essentially uses the whole concept of space in order to comment on the...

Living in a small remote town, Akira takes one various job and roles within his community including postman and tattoo artist. One of his more eccentric clients is the poet Penguin, who receives adoring letters from fans every day. However, when one fan, Star, claims her love and intent to marry, the three of them enter an odd relationship that feeds from their eccentrics.
Fancy is screening at Camera Japan
Director Masaoki Hirota’s debut film “Fancy” is a bumpy ride, one which leads on a strong note but begins to waiver in quality as the production progresses. Starting off on the most positive aspect, Hirota crafts some deeply engaging characters with personas that help drive both comedy and conflict without feeling overly forced. This is most notable in Akira, who navigates the absurdness of the town he lives in with a calm and collective manner that heightens the comedic tone in the film.

Another Decade with Takashi Miike is a series of essays on the 2010 films of the Japanese maverick, following Notebook's earlier survey of Miike's first decade of the 21st century. At once propulsive and ruminative, First Love finds Takashi Miike looking back on his career while generating a steadily escalating sense of suspense. The film’s streamlined quality confirms what a focused filmmaker Miike has become over the 2010s: though it contains about a dozen major characters and several important conflicts, the director moves between them fluidly. He also exudes such intense energy while doing so that First Love generally recalls the freewheeling films Miike made in his late 90s/early 00s heyday. The director underscores this link with the past with plenty of gleefully outré content, such as multiple beheadings (all of them presented comically) and a progression of events that culminates with a harried sex worker frenziedly snorting heroin off a Yakuza’s crotch.

Japan’s maestro of pulp Takashi Miike is approaching his 60th birthday (this August) and, far from slowing down, remains fanatically prolific. Here is his 103rd feature credit, a violent yakuza caper that hits the ground sprinting from the opening credits, bringing in the gruesome decapitations pretty much from the word go.
Leo (Masakata Kobota) is a young boxer who is told he has an inoperable brain tumour, with little time to live – and a fortune-teller informs him that he should be fighting for someone, not just for the selfish pleasure of victory. Emboldened by these medical and supernatural prophecies, Leo steps in to help a terrified young woman, Monica (Sakurako Konishi), who has been forced into prostitution by yakuza gangsters. Even though Fantastic Fest has been over for about a month now, there were a few films that this writer saw that have really stuck with me and I felt like I needed to take a moment to write about them here. And as the saying goes, better late than never. So, here’s a look at three very different films that I really enjoyed for very different reasons: Takashi Miike’s First Love, the old-school sci-fi stylings of The Vast of Night, and The True Adventures of Wolfboy, which stars It’s Jaeden Martell.
First Love: As someone who has been a longtime fan of Takashi Miike’s work, First Love delivered up everything I could possibly want from the Maestro and more, as it is a proverbial buffet of brutality that also leans into Miike’s sly sense of humor and manages to strike a few heartfelt chords along the way.

Miike’s energy and playfulness seems to know no end. His latest effort “First Love” has nothing that might betray its ordinal number (103!), on the contrary, it feels rather fresh as a “feel good” plot – yes, you’ve heard right – emerges under the familiar Yakuza antics.

The films of Takashi Miike don’t always get U.S. distribution, but thankfully after a strong response at Cannes, his latest feature First Love will arrive this month. First stopping by Tiff and Fantastic Fest, Well Go USA have now unveiled the U.S. trailer and poster for the yakuza thriller, which follows a low-level yakuza, a terminally ill boxer, and a drug-addicted call girl who get caught up in a gang war.
Rory O’Connor said in his review, “The last film legendary Japanese ultra-violence auteur Takashi Miike brought to Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight featured a character that was essentially a person in a felt frog costume that looked like it’d gone through the wash a few too many times. The being had a knack for martial arts and, like some acid-trip Sesame Street version of the four horsemen, was said to signal the coming apocalypse. So to note that First Love,...

"I'm just a boxer." Well Go USA has released the full-length official Us trailer for Takashi Miike's latest film, titled First Love - originally known as Hatsukoi. This first premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, and it's playing at Tiff next in the Midnight Madness category before hitting theaters later this month. The film stars Masataka Kubota, Nao Omori, Shota Sometani, and Sakurako Konishi. Reviews describe it as a "hard-boiled and soft-hearted" action film. The eclectic characters in Takashi Miike’s new gangster movie include a low-level punk yakuza, a sullen prizefghter with nothing to lose, an oblivious sex worker who is being haunted by half naked ghosts, and an unhinged femme fatale on a mission to avenge the death of her pimp boyfriend. Those are just the main players in “First Love,” an absurdist gonzo comedy and wild goose chase that is never short on memorable characters. “First Love” premiered earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival, and it will go on to play Fantastic Fest, but its next bow will be in the Toronto International Film Festival’s highly vetted Midnight Madness program.
The newly released first trailer offers a colorful and musical glimpse of the latest work from the prolific Japanese auteur. Though Miike’s work ranges wildly in genre, he is best known for films such as “Audition” (1999), “Ichi the Killer...

"The smell of war is in the air." Well Go USA has debuted the first teaser trailer for Takashi Miike's latest film, titled First Love - originally known as Hatsukoi. This premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year in the Directors' Fortnight sidebar, and is opening in Us theaters this September - not too much of a wait for those interested. This is Miike at "his most fun and anarchic, a noir-tinged yakuza film blending genres in the story of a young boxer and a call girl, who fall passionately in love while getting innocently caught up in a drug-smuggling scheme over the course of one night in Tokyo." The film's main cast features Masataka Kubota, Nao Omori, Shota Sometani, and Sakurako Konishi. Early reviews describe this as "feral and full of life" and also "hard-boiled and soft-hearted", comparing it to Tarantino's style. It looks damn good from this teaser.

A boxer with a brain tumor, a crooked cop with terrible luck, a screw-up yakuza who’s seen too many movies, a dismembered Chinese gangster who wields a pump-action shotgun with his one remaining arm, a terrified prostitute who’s stalked by a ghost in tighty whities, an unkillable femme fatale who will kick a man to death just for being in her way, and the world’s most wonderful heroin. Those are just some of the many different ingredients that prolific Japanese auteur Takashi Miike swirls into his frequently sublime new gangster film, a piece of work so feral and full of life that you’d never guess it was (at least) the 90th feature its director has made in the last 30 years. Even now, after making everything from scarring horror masterpieces (“Audition”) to unwatchable family comedies (“Ninja Kids!!!”), Miike hasn’t lost any of his lust for life,...
