Have you ever watched and enjoyed a movie, but by the time it ends, you're not really sure what it was trying to accomplish?
That's how I felt after watching The Sounding, the feature debut of its co-writer, director, and star, Catherine Eaton.
Eaton co-wrote the film with Bryan Delaney. It's the first feature for both, but they had some pull, landing an admirable cast, up for the challenge of a story about a young woman named Liv (Eaton).
For all intents and purposes, Liv is an ordinary woman. But she has an extraordinary story -- she hasn't spoken a word in years with no discernable explanation.
Liv's grandfather, Lionel (Harris Yulin), in ill health and concerned over his grandaughter's future in light of his imminent passing, calls on the son of an old friend, a neuropsychologist named Michael (Teddy Sears), to help Liv when the time is right.

Writer/director/star Catherine Eaton’s feature directorial debut The Sounding is finally available nationwide digitally after a planned theatrical run was unfortunately scrapped due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It’s been a long time coming considering we reviewed it in 2017 out of the Buffalo International Film Festival, but even longer for its creator considering the one-woman theatrical show that spawned it, “Corsetless,” hit stages in 2007.
The film is a timely story about “otherness” and society’s desire to want to assimilate rather than accept. Eaton stars as a woman named Olivia who is introduced as a completely non-verbal (oral or written) person living with her grandfather on a tight-knit island off of Maine before tragedy forces her to speak … but only through the words of William Shakespeare. The result is an emotionally and philosophically touching piece that highlights the complexity of marginalization and seeks to find clarity in the...

In the spring 2017, one-time “All My Children” star Catherine Eaton’s directorial debut, “The Sounding,” made its premiere at the Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival, where it picked up the Audience Award in the “New American Visions” section. Since then, Eaton — who also stars in the film, which she wrote with Bryan Delaney — has taken the film around the world, picking up jury awards, audience awards, and even a best cinematography win for Dp David Kruta at the Woodstock Film Festival. , Eaton’s film is finally being released more than 40 months after its Minnesota debut, offering a well-drawn character study wrapped inside an ambitious plot.
Set (and shot) mostly on the remote island of Monhegan, just off the coast of Maine, Eaton’s film conjures both a place and a people. Mostly, there is Olivia (Eaton), the only grandchild and last living family member of Lionel (Harris Yulin), a...

Mental health institutions are not filled with emotionally disturbed individuals, but rather brave iconoclasts unwilling to conform to societal rules. That, at least, is an idea that’s been posited in popular culture for what seems like forever, most prominently advanced in the book, stage and screen versions of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Catherine Eaton’s feature debut, which she co-wrote, directed and stars in, is a distinctly eccentric variation on the old idea, revolving around a young woman who at first doesn’t speak at all and then, when she finally does, expresses herself only in Shakespearean couplets....

Giant Pictures has acquired North American rights to The Sounding, the feature directing debut of Catherine Eaton. She also co-wrote with Bryan Delaney and stars in the pic, which is shifting release gears from theatrical owing to the pandemic lockdown and now will premiere on-demand nationwide October 20. HBO Europe has acquired Central European streaming rights.
Eaton plays Liv, a young woman who has never spoken, raised on a remote island by her grandfather (Harris Yulin). When Lionel discovers he’s dying, he calls the maverick son (Teddy Sears) of his best friend and asks him to protect Liv’s independence, alongside Lionel’s attorney (Frankie Faison). That night, as Lionel is reading to Liv, his voice fails him. Liv picks up the book of Shakespeare and begins to weave a new language from Shakespeare’s words. She is committed to a psychiatric hospital and becomes a full-blown rebel, while her...

What is it about our quest to not simply help those in need, but solve what is supposedly ailing them? What in the history of mankind shifted focus from wanting to understand that which was different to assimilating (eradicating) it? Greed. Power. Sanctimony. Ego. There are an infinite number of words able to answer these questions and yet no one has actually solved the issue. Or perhaps no one can. Utopic visions presume that it is possible: peace on earth. We strive to fight for a world that is truly colorblind and free whether to choose language, religion, sexuality, or love. The United States was built on these freedoms, but from a very specific worldview perpetually lording one above all others. We remain stuck in that box still.
So what then do we do when it’s discovered everything we’ve been educated and raised to believe is false? How...

No one said the name “Donald Trump” at the annual Through Her Lens: The Tribeca Chanel Women’s Filmmaker Program kickoff luncheon, held this afternoon at New York City’s Locanda Verde restaurant. But they didn’t need to. As Jane Rosenthal, the Executive Chair of Tribeca Enterprises (and co-founder of the Tribeca Film Festival) greeted the crowd with an enthusiastic cry for her fellow “nasty ladies!” to welcome each other, it was clear that the group, composed of leading female actresses, directors, writers, producers, casting directors and costume designers, was already on the same page.
Now in its second year, the Through Her Lens program is a three-day workshop that “aims to balance industry support, artistic development and funding for new and emerging U.S.-based female writers and directors of short-form narrative films.” This year’s group consists of five filmmakers, who will each pitch their project to...
